This is a small BBQ joint off the 101 freeway, easy to find (Look for the big chicken on the roof). Staff is super-friendly, and if you're any kind of a repeat customer they get to know you quickly. I'm picky about tri-tip. Anything past Medium is a waste, and medium-rare is where the piece of meat was meant to be eaten at. Ordering dinner plates here lets you choose your doneness, though they error a little on the cooked side since they touch your order up on the wood-burning fire outside for an extra kick of oak flavor. I"ll take the touch of extra cooking for the flavor any day- it's an intense flavor. If you're ordering whole tri-tips this isn't an issue, but get ready to pay. Ribs are good, but I find the sausage even better. I've tried most of the sides, and can't complain about any of them- I'm especially fond of the potato salad. It has just enough herbs and other bits and pieces to give it a good zing- it doesn't taste like mayo and potatoes. The standard sauce/rib sauce is probably one of my favorite BBQ sauces of all time. It's worth the 5 bucks for a jar. My father has to resist the urge to just drink it straight from the jar. It's got a great balance of savory and sweet. It's not a tart or vinegar-centric sauce (though that's in there), but more like a perfect meat sauce compliment. The side salads that come with dinner are bright and vibrant and fresh. They're simple garden salads, but the ingredients are quality. In fact, that's pretty much the running theme here: Quality ingredients. The tri-tip isn't overly-fatty, the sausages are fantastic, the garlic bread is quality garlic bread. You pay for it, to be sure (expect around 20 bucks per person if you get a dinner combo and a drink), and that price range is kind of at odds with how kick back the establishment is, since you're creeping up towards places like Wood Ranch territory with those prices. However, I'd put this ahead of Wood Ranch any day. I'd give the place 5 stars except for the slightly elevated prices and the odd hours... First half of the week the place closes at 6, which is still pretty early into dinner service. Sometimes I'm in the mood for some tri-tip and I look at the clock and it's 6:15, and they're closed. Second half of the week they're open later. Sundays they're closed. I get the hours, and as an individual, respect that the owner doesn't work everyone to death and gives Sundays off. As a customer it's mildly inconvenient. Between that and the prices, it loses a star. read more

I've ordered food from this establishment many times due to it being located close to a work site I have there. I have always found the food to be good, the service to be good, hand I generally make call in orders which the very good about timing or giving me the correct time. The only detractor for me is the fact that everything is done with sauces and not rubs. I'm not going to tell them how to run their business, because they obviously run it very well. Ok... Best BBQ ever! Seriously, flavor on point. I recommend the Pork Ribs with a side of chili beans:) SO GOOD! & this was actually recommended to me by one of the guys working the counter. The tri-tip sandwich is quite tasty, but the size was on the small side for the price. I like potato salad, but theirs was nasty, I didn't eat it. They used to offer Coke and Orange Crush in real glass bottles. Last trip there, the glass bottle sodas were gone, leaving soft drinks to the fountain dispenser using Ventura's foul water. Bottom line, great tri-tip sandwich, but "meh" on the rest. Update- I'm giving Marshall's an extra star. After several years of seeking the ultimate tri-tip sandwich, Marshall's is still the best. I had heard from some friends that Marshall's is a great place for bbq. They apparently aren't very good friends. I ordered the tri tip dinner and my husband had the tri tip sandwich. Both of us asked for our steak cooked medium and we both received very dry steak (except the piece ibhad swimming in a pool of grease) cooked well done. Why even ask how we want it cooked? We got the orders to go. His container had 2 small pieces of bread, a few slices of tri tip and a container of bbq sauce in it, as did mine. He also ordered some Mac & cheese on the side. Apparently someone told Marshall's that cheese isn't a requirement for mac & cheese, because it was the most bland we've ever had. I had a baked potato and chili beans with my meal and this was the first time I've ever had a baked potato that was too tough (yes, tough) to cut with a butter knife and chili beans that were dry. Was everything served to us leftover from the day before? That's how it certainly tasted. The only thing that didn't suck was the side salad that came with my dinner. This used to be an outstanding BBQ. They used to put a chicken filet within terrific garlic bread with genuine BBQ beans and excellent coleslaw. These days the filet has been replaced with sliced very skimpy portions with over-sauced canned beans. When they start skimping on the quality either the owner has become too greedy and trying to bank on old loyalty while sacrificing previous high quality BBQ. MY wife And I decided to drive over from Fillmore to try the bbq for lunch.I ordered a rib and tri-tip combo and my wife had tri-tip sandwich and a salad. The ribs tasted old and were barely luke warm obviously re-heated. The coleslaw was pre packaged in a container saugy and wet. The garlic bread was cold and hard tasted like was refrigerated overnight then reheated.The tri-tip was o.k. but again barley warm. My wifes tri-tip sandwich was just o.k. barley warm and bun taste old. Her salad was pre- packaged and nothing special or fresh about it. For just over 30.00 we were extremely dissapointed. In Ventura Marshall's is one of the few places to eat real BBQ. They have a large pit outside, fired up with wood. The meats are tender and cooked perfect. You can go in sit down, have a drink and get a great meal. Price is good and I wish that they were open longer and later. read more

The food was deliicious..Had ribs and tri tip..Ribs were a little bland with no sauce on them... We thought the meat was grass fed,natural and hormone free...there was a sign that said they serve Mannings meat which is the natural grass fed etc..We found out after we ate, the owner gets the meat from 2 sources and one of them is Tijuana which is very questionable ..The employees at the store didnt even know what hormone free or grass fed or natural was!!!!!!!!! They also served the food in plastic containers if even U were eating there..I thought that was odd....A waste they could at least used something that can break down in the environment read more

I've eaten at all the BBQ spots in Ventura and this is my favorite. The other's are good but Marshall's tri-tip sandwich just gets it right. The meat is piled high on a delicious french bread thats not too tough or crusty. Sauce is great. I haven't had anything else because the sandwiches are just too good to pass up. I know, it's not authentic to anywhere else--Texas, Missouri, or Kentucky--but for California style BBQ, this is the best. Tender, smoky, juicy, awesome sauce. Hubby and I went Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010. It's in an industrial area next to the freeway, so the location isn't beautiful, but the food was delicious and there was plenty of it! The service very good and quick. It seems like a very popular place with locals, yet the hotel we stayed at hadn't heard of it. Glad we found it online before taking our trip. My biggest complaint is that the meat had no flavor. It looked like they pulled it out of a pan of liquid on a steam table. No dry rub, no smokey flavor. Not my first time, trying to get something that works,but after watching some bbq specials on TV, I was in the mood, ordered ahead for a rib dinner, picked up my order to an empty kitchen with lots of employees doing stock for next day.My order was handed to me, but on getting home, the salad was missing,no big deal, came for the bbq, ribs were cold and flaverless, no smoke flaver, and no taste to the rub,not even salted enough! The sauce was flat, and the hot was the same with tabasco in it.The beans were good, as well as the baked tater, so I filled up on carbs, put half of the ribs in the fridge and called it a done deal.
