But, I'm somewhat of a Tater Tot junkie, so take that advice for what it's worth. * Fries were fantastic, as well. * Short Rib Melt was delicious, but very, very rich. I just discovered the Barrelhouse and now it will be one of my favorites to come to. The food is amazing and so is the service. I had a hamburger for lunch and I must say it was the best hamburger I have had in a long time. The meat was charbroiled and juicy and the buns were nice and toasty and the cheese had a white cheddar to die for. The onion rings were the best I have had and my friend had fries which were excellent. It has been a long time since I had such a great lunch. I am not stretching the truth either. Came here on a Wednesday after just getting into town. The allure of The Avenue Burger but once I got here, I noticed the 3 fire signs next to it and confirmed with the waitress that it's really spicy, so that's a no go for me. The waitress mentioned it is 50% off wings from 5pm-10pm on Wednesdays and since truffle wings is actually the first item shown on Yelp, I figured it's a go! I went with the lemon & herb dry rub and strawbanero per the waitresses recommendation. Apparently they are the only place that does strawbanero which is sweet and not too spicy. The results? Strawbanero was a major hit! Haven't had anything like it and sort of wish the whole batch was Strawbanero. The lemon & herb was nice but nothing unique. Actually needed to use ranch with it as it is a dry rub, and somehow the lemon & herb ended up spicier than the Strawbanero. The only downside is that the majority of the wings are chicken legs and I much prefer wings instead. I added a beer batted shrimp taco which was part of happy hour until 6pm on weekdays and it was delicious! It solidified the 5 star rating. I got a poke bowl which I am always on the hunt for and it did not disappoint. We were a large group and staff were super attentive and friendly. The restaurant is located behind the gas station. About a block away once you exit the freeway. This was my first time being here. When we arrived, the restaurant felt warm and stuffy, in which, I wanted to leave but I was assured that the food was good by others in my party that had been there in the past. So we stayed. When we arrived, there was a couple sitting at the bar. 3 tables were occupied in the entire restaurant. So basically it was pretty much empty. Now as for our waitress, which I can't remember her name, but she had mentioned that that was her first job working as a waitress - which would be ok if she was more attentive. She was only attentive while taking our order for food and drinks. The food order was entered and we received our drinks. After that, she basically disappeared on us. I tried to flag down someone else for refills but seemed like they would avoid our area. Our waitress was busy talking to several other co-workers behind the bar. I guess because we were a party of 6, in which 20% tip/gratuity is automatically added to the bill, she no longer needed to give us service because she was going to get 20%. Once the food came out, a young guy brought us the food. I had to ask him for refills in which he said he would ask our waitress because he could only bring out food items and sides like ketchup and ranch. Weird! Once we received all of our food, FINALLY the waitress arrived to see if everything was ok. I asked for a refill because apparently she didn't see that our cups were empty. Asking for refills is my BIGGEST PET PEEVE! The food was really good. Food order: I ordered the Capitan's Combo ($19) - (beer battered with fried fish and shrimp, comes with fries but I upgraded to beer battered onion rings for an extra $2.50). My wife ordered the same combo with regular fries in which they were not seasoned/salted, but plain (fries were bland). My wife also ordered bone-in chicken wings, flavored Strawbanero ($17). They were delicious. They were crispy and juicy, well cooked. The marinate was kind of like a thickened sticky teriyaki sauce. Great flavor, then if you add some ranch, the strawberry flavor comes out even more. My brother in law ordered The Avenue burger ($20) which does have 3 flames on it. He loves spicy food, but this burger was even more spicy than he thought. He didn't add extra spicy sauce, but was almost having trouble finishing his burger. Sister in law ordered Nachos ($12) with skirt steak (+$6). They came in a basket, a very good portion. One of my niece's ordered the same Strawbanero bone-in wings, and the other ordered a burger. All of our drinks were sodas, waters, and unsweetened drinks. Our bill was over $200. Overall, I might not be returning or if I do, I'll ask for someone else! read more

Great vibes, was bustling at happy hour on Wednesday- half off wings! Always a fun chill place to catch the game, grab drinks and wings or the short rib melt and a big plate of garlic fries with friends. Excellent happy hour deals and of course tons of drinks. Not just beers but cocktails, seltzers, ciders, sours, and meads. I tried the blueberry mead, which was a delightful sweet treat and such a pretty purple color. Lemon herb wings were crispy, tangy and ranch was plentiful. Fries always fresh and crispy. Drinks and appetizer only: This is my first time within Barrelhouse 101- Last time I visited this place I was sitting in the parking lot during Covid. It is certainty nice to curl up to the bar and receive some good service in a bar like environment that offers tables, high tops and beer seating. Our visit was primarily to enjoy some good beers on tap. My partner wanted to stop in as they have a German beer that he likes on tap- its hard to find his chosen beer on tap in southern California- so worth a stop in if you are a German beer fan. To compliment our drinks, we ordered a plate of onion rings with blue cheese. The onion rings were good- nice and big and "meaty." Plus with house made blue cheese! During the week I see that they have a fabulous happy hour Monday- Friday from 3-6pm with drinks and food. The drink menu includes an array of beers for five dollars, five dollar wines and six dollar cocktails. Plus bites and appetizers that range from four to six dollars that range from fries to tacos to poke. Something for everyone! The restaurant does have a parking lot! Great thing in Ventura. Plus you can find on street parking and a city lot not too far away. Plenty of parking in the area. read more

So grateful for the late seating/dining... we came a little before 9pm (noticed a couple other parties came in for food too) the gal was so sweet! Can't remember her name but she was very helpful and attentive and not "rushy" at all! So the reason for the 3 stars (and not 4 or 5) is because of the quality of our food. My short rib grilled sandwich was tasty but unbelievably drippy to the point of sick soggy. One half of the sandwich was literally sitting in a puddle of juice on the plate. I set it on a pile of napkins and soaked up some of it. The half that ate first, while it wasn't soggy, it was super drippy. But tasty! I chose not to send it back because it was late, last call for the kitchen and I was starving. My husband's patty melt was mediocre, not much flavor and just drowned in 1000 island dressing :o\ Our side salads were awesome, very fresh lettuce, cucumber and tomatoes. Came in to dinner with my family as we walked in we where greeted right away. 15 minutes to sit down we had a party of 9. The server right away let us know that they charge gratuity to party's with 6 or more. So we waited for the rest of my party, me and my wife ordered a drink. 10 minutes after we got our drink, everyone got drinks. Then we ordered all our food as we watched the GSW game, the setting was dime lights semi busy but started to get abit busier as it got later. Took about 20 mins to get our food. I stopped in with my pup for dinner and had a great experience! We were seated quickly and both got water right away, all of the servers were very friendly and attentive, and the poke bowl and red lager I ordered were both excellent. The food portion is LARGE and unfortunately very oily. My Philly cheese steak was sitting on a pool of oil which made it very soggy and hard to eat. Came for happy hour, I was greeted when I walked in. Once we sat down our server came over pretty quick. The happy hour menu had a variety of food and drinks for a reasonable price. The ahi poke crisp was a good portion for one piece and quite tasty. The flavors of skirt steak taco was good but the beef was slightly over done. The mini corn dogs was crispy on the outside and tasted ok. The house Pinot tasted bland, but the peach cider was very good. Service was good, our waitress came to check on us frequently. This is great spot to hit for drinks! I stopped by when it was not too busy and started off with the ahi poke crisps. I would personally pass on the ahi poke crisps the aioli and balsamic was too overpowering and was not distributed in the best manner as when I picked up the crisps the oil was just dripping everywhere. I got the fish and chips and they were very tasty. The reason for my low rating was the service because service felt very impersonal and rushed. Heard they were closing so came to redeem a reward I had earned. Bartender said it wasn't valid on happy hour which was not the case on the past so wound up having their house ipa at full price to get the discount to apply. Had that been the case I would have ordered a non happy hour beer like space dust. Things like this cause you to go out of business. read more

Barrelhouse 101 is a relaxing spot with good food, and lots of big screen TVs. I stopped in for diner after work and had a good time. I ordered the Beacon Burger for $19.00 and switched the fries to tots. It was a hefty burger with bacon, lettuce, tomato, and cheese which really filled me up. They gave me a generous serving of hot crispy tots on the side and some ranch to dunk them in. I washed it all down with a very palatable IPA, that wasn't too hoppy. There was sports all around on the big screens and it seemed like every table had a good view. We had a pleasant server who brought our food out quickly. Overall it was a good spot. read more

When an establishment has 1,299 reviews (and mine making it a solid 1,300) with a solid average or 4-stars, there no sense of me gatekeeping my favorite burger/beer venue in Ventura County. Barrelhouse 101 is the finest gastropub that the 805 has to offer and you'll miss out if don't take time to visit here at least once. Over the years, I've ventured into "a few" beers with various versions of bar food. Each visit I've had at BH101, there has not been an experimental beer that has not matched perfectly with any selection of my choosing from their menu. Then again, their vast selections of beer on tap is unrivaled anywhere in Ventura. Blondes, reds (and no, I'm not talking about the women), stouts, IPAs, sours; they are all there for the choosing for whatever floats your boat. The menu here is outstanding if you know what to expect when coming for "bar food." The fish/shrimp batter on the flavorful tacos are so crunchy but light; perfect texture and bite. I embarrassed to say I've had just about every burger on the menu and each patty was cooked my requested medium-rare; depending on the toppings/flavor you want, the flavor profile will beat your expectations whether it be with BBQ sauce, chorizo, bacon, so on and so on. What tops this place for me is the abundance of Sonoma County's Russian River Brewery selections. This Northern California brewery is the crème de la crème of any flavor of beer. On my most recent visit, BH101 was host to the annual Pliny the Younger tasting. This event is akin to finding The Holy Grail with the ability to drink from the chalice. The event was packed but there was not an unhappy patron from within. The service I receive here on each visit is always top notch with quick attention to any request. If you're travelling South or North through Ventura County, you'd be missing out on some fine food and beer if you didn't bookmark this place as a rest stop. With it's location so close to the 101 freeway, there's no reason not to give this place a visit and give your tastebuds a true treat. read more

I so rarely write negative reviews and perhaps this could be a 3 but the place was so disappointing. Bartender was 'okay' as he was the only one dealing with the 15+ seat bar and table orders. $15 mixed drinks is pretty steep with zero presentation and a stingy pour. Guacamole was a rip off as the portion for $12 was small. Lots of chips and that was the highlight. The salsa that our bartender asked if we wanted was like tomato juice and OMG they charged $2. When we got the bill and told the bartender we were surprised that we got charged for the tiny cup of salsa he said he didn't know they charged. Really? Luckily the fish and chips we ordered did not get into the system! Our pretzel was good and a bargain in light of the guacamole! The one huge TV is too high for sitting at the bar unless you don't mind getting a neck crick. Luckily there are tons of other dining and brewery choices in Ventura. read more

They're very generous if you share. They cut the sandwich then gave us each a full bowl of Mac and cheese for only $1 more. Very nice of them. A must get is the Peanut Butter and Strawberry Beer. I've been coming to Barrelhouse for almost 7 years. The wings and burgers have always been the go-to, but there's other highlights as well. My favorite wings are hands down the strawbanero flavor. If you've never had them, try them. They are some of the better wings in the Ventura County area. The buffalo wings are good also. The burgers are great as well; I've had the Freddy, the Wake N Bacon, the Taphouse, the Avenue, and the Beacon and none have disappointed. I've also enjoyed their fish tacos before. The one item that I did not like here was the Patty Melt that I tried recently. Unfortunately it just lacked flavor, and I am someone that loves a good Patty melt. I used to think that they could do no wrong here, hopefully my next trip restores my faith. But overall this will continue to be a go-to in the area for a happy hour, sports game or just to grab a bite with some friends. read more
