As the mines in Cornwall slowly closed, men heard of gold mines in California and moved their knowledge across the ocean, bringing hand pies or pasties with them. Meat and potatoes baked in a shell was the food that fueled them digging deep into the earth, and the women in the kitchen at Marshall's Pasties have kept the traditional meal alive. This was a very good pastie. Now, don't get me wrong, I am a pastie connoisseur and grew up eating pasties in Michigan. Both my grandma and my mother would make pasties and we ate them every Christmas Eve dinner. I know good pasties. Was this the best I've ever had?...no way. Pros: -crust was excellent and this is one of the most important parts. - well flavored and seasoned Cons: -too much potato -needs carrots and/or rutabaga -needs onion I'm a bigger fan of diced beef rather than ground, but that's just a personal taste. Overall, there aren't a lot of options in the Northern CA or NV area for pasties so, I can recommend this place. Compared to Northern Michigan pasties, it was pretty good, and that's what I use as my litmus test. read more

It pains me to write this review because I've been eating these pasties for forty years and always love them- this time though the dough was gummy and translucent, not flaky at all and it was almost 100% sliced bland potatoes - no amount of salt, malt vinegar and ketchup could fix it - looked nothing like the picture posted showing a pasty full of beef- I literally couldn't see or taste anything but potatoes - really wish I'd thought to take a picture of the thinly sliced stacked potatoes with no visible, meat, carrots, herbs, anything- so disappointing- I know beef is expensive but would rather pay more than have the quality be that bad - heartbreaking really because they're usually so dependable - also I find the cash only policy a little odd and I usually don't carry much cash, much less a checkbook anymore- so you may be limited on what you can purchase. read more

What a gem,absolutely adore this business! A simple unpretentious hole in the wall with history as good and authentic as the pasties themself. The young lady at the counter was super helpful as I asked dozens of questions,promising to return to purchase her hand made product. I'm sure she was surprised when I actually returned with our party of 4 (kinda toasted from sitting in the ac at Gary's place across the street, separate review coming for them)to get a good variety of everything. I took pics and learned that Elizabeth is Marie Marshall's grand daughter and of course cuz they both have contagious smiles and a serious passion about traditional Cornish Pasties. 4 generations doing great stuff in downtown Grass valley. I recognized this food from the time I spent in New Zealand, where they are everywhere. It seems this traditional mining food that came from England had been very popular in this area due to its mining history. Great to see the historical food still being served in the area. The shop had a very simple and basic ambience, but lens itself to the hard-working honesty of the miner. This is one of two pasty shops in town and I'm not sure which one is definitively the best, but... this one cost half as much as the other... You be the judge. read more

I drove by the other day and knew that I had to come back and check them out. They offer several flavors to pick from and two different sizes mini and regular, I went with the regular. Not bad, but not the greatest on the planet. They have a small dining area, but the window seat is the best spot to sit and people watch while enjoying whichever pasties you choose. The chicken wasn't my favorite so I recommend the ground beef pastie. The service wasn't all that great. We had told her it was our first time in town and trying their pasties and she was completely unphased. Not rude, but not personable either. My beautiful wife and I were watching a short YouTube video about pasties in Grass Valley. The video featured Marshall's so we thought we'd check it out when we came to visit. Marshall's is a small place with a few tables and chairs inside. Bring cash, as they do not accept cards. I ordered the chicken pastie and my wife ordered the sausage. Our selection was limited since it was later in their work hours and they were out of a lot of stuff. The pasties were delicious! I think I liked the sausage one the best. I am definitely going to learn how to make them myself. Please give this place a try if you are ever in Grass Valley. Visit earlier in the day so there maybe a larger selection! read more

The food is gross. I was so excited to try this place, but upon entering a shorter heavyset woman was incredibly un welcoming, if not borderline rude. Did not ask me anything but "what do you want" in a rough tone of voice and not another word after that. After she handed me the food, an older petite woman who was very friendly and had a smile, came out and asked if she had even offered me the sauce to go with it (she hadn't). I said it was fine and left. I would say Marie Callender's pot pies are better than what I got from there, and along with the attitude from the heavyset woman, I'll never be back. read more

Wow! My husband and I were so excited to try pasties knowing their history and origin and this place is absolutely incredible. The pasties are delicious. These pasties you could eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The shop is small and intimate and the ladies working there are all so lovely. If you are traveling through I suggest bringing a cooler to take some home as we regret not bringing our own cooler to take some back with us. Stopped here on the way back to SF. I don't know why people are writing "authentic" in their reviews because these are nothing like pasties from Cornwall. I ordered the beef, it was just filled with weird beef that was the texture of mystery meet and potatoes. There were no vegetables, like in a real Cornish pastie, and it was totallly BLAND. The crust of a real, baked Cornish pasties is supposed to be thick, firm, buttery, crumbly, and flaky - they have a glossy sheen. The crust on this one was genuinely like a hot pocket. I hate to say this, but this was the hot pocket version of a Cornish Pastie. Giving two stars because the lady behind the counter was nice and the service was fast. read more

Marshalls pasties have been around since 1955! They are located at 203 Mill Street in downtown Grass Valley. They bake their pasties fresh every day. It's a very small spot but there is tables for eating inside. It is pronounced Past_e. The men that would mine in Nevada County would get these as a staple . I love that their prices are still decent.. I got 2 small beef pasties for 5.85 each! There is a newer pasty shop in Grass Valley but it is twice as expensive! You can eat your pasty overlooking downtown Grass Valley. This is owner operated (mother and daughter I think). The employee was friendly and I did not have to wait for my pasties which I really liked! I took a picture of their varied hours ( only closed on Tuesdays). It is next to Bloom hair salon and directly across from Wells Fargo. There is limited parking on the street. It's Part of nevada county history and still going strong! read more

When the Pasty Shack in Sacramento closed this week, we weren't sure if we could find any comparable as our family had been buying pasties there for over 60 years. We checked on Yelp to see who had the best pasties within 100 miles! Marshalls pasties was the first one that came up. We drove up there today and talk about not being disappointed! The pasties are unbelievably delicious. We bought four vegetarian pasties to bring home and two of the apple. We froze the vegetarian and ate the apple ones for dessert, which was really our dinner since we were still full from lunch! We would've bought more, but they were out of the beef pasties. We will call a day or two ahead to make sure they have them. The service was terrific. Three generations work there and they are all so nice and helpful. And the woman that waited on us had a great sense of humor which we loved! There are a couple of tables and then three chairs at the window. We sat at the window so we could people watch. I visit Grass Valley at least a couple of times each year- and every visit includes a stop at Marshall's. The best pasty is the beef eaten with malt vinegar. But we've also tried just about every other kind. The apple comes frosted and is a sweet dessert. The storefront itself is small with just a counter for ordering and a couple of chairs. I think we've only ever gotten pasties to go. We've even taken a bag of them frozen and baked them at home. In my opinion, Marshall's makes the best pasties in town. Note: Cash/check only. The dough was soft and buttery. The filling was a hearty blend of pork sausage, potato, and seasonings. There's 4 two-person tables and the pasties are fresh daily, never frozen. My wife and I wanted to try what the miners used to eat and this place looked like it had not changed from that time period. Super cool to see and even more cool to try the meat pastries they had. Im originally from the area and have since moved, but the flavor of these flaky savory pasties tastes like growing up in Nevada county. The counter staff is always friendly and the flavors consistent. There is a small area to eat inside, but taking your pasty to go and eat somewhere beautiful is what I recommend (plenty of options!). If you are visiting Grass Valley, you must try these as they are so part of the history there. How fun to try what the gold miner's ate back in the day. They make their own sausage for the sausage pasty and it's nicely seasoned and layered with thinly slices potatoes. A little kick of heat at the end. If you're not into herbs and/or spice the beef is good too. Do not miss trying the apple one which seems to be something you don't see at other pasty places. I ordered the small beef pasty ($6-ish after taxes) that was just over palm-sized but packed with plenty of well-seasoned beef and sliced potatoes. Crust was fully cooked through and had that nice buttery taste to it. This pasty does tastes great by itself, but I'm sure it's even better accompanied by gravy or malt vinegar. In the Northern CA Sierra Nevada foothills town of Grass Valley is a pastie shop called Marshall's. Pastie?! Say what?!? I'm talking about the Cornish originated baked pastry that is a handheld minced meat pie... what did you think?! Pastie pronounced PASS-TEE! I've been dropping in for over 15 years. They only take CASH or check. Check?!? Anyhow, there is a Wells Fargo ATM right across the street. Full disclosure, I've never been to England. But I sure do like Marshall's pasties. They are made the traditional Cornish way. I've tried all their varieties except the cheese ones. Beef, chicken, turkey, sausage, vegetable, ham n cheese, broccoli n cheese, and their apple figgy. (Not all at once ;) The meat is minced. The filling includes thin cut potatoes,parsley, and onion. I'm not a fan of parsley but I don't taste it. It's in there though. seasoned well. Moist interior. Thick hearty crust. Yum! 5 plus stars. The pasties come in two sizes, regular $5and large $5.50. They'll serve them hot or unheated. Unheated if you intend to refrigerate them to heat later. Even when you refrigerate them for a day and reheat in the microwave or oven, they still taste great... no drying out. Marshall's pasties are round and have a braided baked crust. Pasties are said to originate in Cornwall England in the 13th century with the wives of the tin miners and farm laborers making these delectable portable meals for their hubs to take with them. The braided crust served as a handle of sorts for the men as they ate it so as not to dirty their food. Well those miners didn't have wash facilities down in those mines. So a braided crust is a traditional must. During the 1880s, mining was the thing in Grass Valley. At that time, 60% of GVs residents hailed from Cornwall. Talking about history, this shop opened up in 1968, by a widowed mother of six... Marie Marshall. Her daughters run the shop now. Wonderful! Women entrepreneurship! The shop is tiny and very clean. It's counter service. They also sell sodas, bottled water, coffee, hot tea, and bottled Izzes. They have a few 2 seat bistro tables inside and outside. The staff are the greatest. 5 star service. One small town and two pasties shops. Normally someone would try to pick a favorite. I can't seem to do that. Both are good and for different reasons. I like this spot because you can choose what size you want and neither are too large for one person. Both sizes are worth the price. Sometimes instead of one big one, it's nice to have two smaller ones of different filling. They also have an apple sweet option. This place was amazing! We came here after getting a recommendation from the crew at Empire Mine ( check that place out for sure!! Lovely in the fall with so much color on display from the trees) and it did not disappoint. We parked down the street form the storefront and we're able to smell the pasties from down the street. Not knowing that wonderful aroma was coming from the shop, once we walked in we knew we were about to experience something magical. We both ordered a beef pastie and a small side of gravy.
