DO NOT TRUST Martinez Auto Repair - Scammed Out of $2,000 and Left With an Undrivable Car I had one of the worst experiences of my life with Martinez Auto Repair and feel a responsibility to warn others. I brought my 2018 Subaru Crosstrek in after noticing a strange noise. After checking the coolant and finding oil in it, I explained this concern to the shop. They charged me $250 for a diagnostic -- which I was never provided. Later, I was emailed stating the issue was the radiator and was quoted $1,776 to fix it. I approved that amount over the phone, and a staff member named Eddie told me the radiator was the only issue, that my engine and head gasket were fine, and that my car would be completely drivable once the repair was done. A few days later, I called to check on the car and was told it was ready. But when I went to pick it up, I was told it was still "making a little noise" and that I now owed $2,050.99 -- way above the original quote. I was refused access to my car unless I paid the full amount. There was no paperwork, no signed estimate, and no real explanation. They initially asked for cash, but then switched to Cash App -- which raised even more concerns. I still have the original email showing the lower price I agreed to. After I paid, I drove off only to experience violent shaking and loud noises worse than before. I turned around and brought the car right back. The mechanic rode with me and admitted there were now engine issues and that I had a bigger issue. The very thing they said they had ruled out. If I had a bigger issue why didn't you tell me that. Shouldn't that be provided with the diagnosis that I never received. Why are you operating on a car without proper diagnosis. I asked, "Why wasn't I told this before the $2,000 repair?" There was no answer, just excuses and him gaslighting saying I wanted to know why oil was in the coolant, not the noise , and they also blamed everything on Eddie (who they said was fired). Dude, I only knew oil was in the coolant because I heard my car making noise. Which was why I checked. The car is now undrivable, and I had to tow it to Subaru. I have video evidence, receipts, and messages proving what happened. They offered to "work with me," but why would I continue working with a shop that lied, manipulated the price, gave no paperwork, and left my car worse than before! You should have worked with me initially and told me about my engine. Martinez Auto Repair completely took advantage of me, especially as a woman navigating auto repair on my own. I trusted them and they left me with a $2,000 bill and a broken-down car. Beware. Do not trust this business. Document everything if you've already interacted with them. I'm currently pursuing further action and urge anyone else scammed to report them too. They messed with the right one and I'm about to let the law show them. $40 for a patch is insane, not to mention I was told it would only be a little over an hour- I walked home bc I'm close by. I had to call them 2.5 hours later and ask if my car was ready. Which at this point who knows how long it was actually ready, without them communicating with me. If I ever come back here I'm haggling. I took my vehicle to this location as the company I work for had been taking all of our work vehicles there and I thought it was a reputable place. I had already taken it to another mechanic that I typically use, but he was going on vacation so he was able to diagnose the issue as needing new motor mounts, but was unable to replace them because he was going to be gone for two weeks. My husband and I took our vehicle to the shop. We informed the man checking us in and we were told we would have a call by noon the next day. I called them back at 6 PM the next day because I never got any communication and was told that the motor mounts need to be replaced, but they were also going to replace the transmission mounts and another set of mounts as well. We approved the quote went forward with the repair. We were told my vehicle would be ready the next day and they would give us a call before the end of business. The next day once again, I had to call at 6 PM because I did not receive contact and was told my vehicle was getting ready to go for a test drive and I could come and pick it up. we went to the shop paid for it and noticed my vehicle was still in the bay. I asked if that meant my vehicle had been tested and they said no if it was test driven, they would have parked it outside. I thought that was weird, but got in my vehicle and left an immediately noticed my car was still shaking. As it was closing time, I called from right outside the shop and explain the issues and I was told to bring it back the next morning at 8 AM. I was onsite at 8 AM the next morning & there was another gentleman there as well who also had been told 8 AM and we found out the shop did not open till 9 AM. I came back at 9 AM. Explain the issues and was told by the gentleman I had checked the car in with "Well it's shaking a lot less so that's good." I believe it was the manager that then walked up and said it was just the steering wheel shaking. I asked them to look it over and mentioned maybe a bolt was loose and was told "No we do everything to specs." My husband was called midday and told that we needed to provide our title registration insurance or drivers license because now that they have replaced the motor mounts they needed to fix some thing in my computer itself. He was going on shift and asked me to give the shop a call. Once I did, I explained that the registration is on the window. The insurance is in the vehicle and they had already scanned my ID the day before at the time of payment. At this time I was told it would cost an extra $480 in order to update the computer that the motor mounts had been replaced. I asked why that was not quoted with the original quote. If that's something you have to do once the mountains are replaced, and I was basically given roundabout excuses. I told him not to touch my vehicle that I would come pick it up and take it directly to the dealership. Once I picked up my vehicle and took it to the dealership, I found out they installed not only the motor mounts backwards, but the transmission mounts, and that was the cause of the issues. I went ahead and had the dealership proceeded with correcting the issues as I had already given Martinez auto a chance to correct whatever issues were wrong and they stated they wanted to go into my computer. I also found out that the dealership charges $190 to go into a computer however at no point in time should your motor mounts affect your computer system. I'm so glad I did not allow them to go into my computer cause I can't imagine what else would have to be repaired by the dealership afterwards. I strongly advise against using this company since not only were they unable to do the work properly the first time, they refused to fully look into the issues the second time. I was referred to Martinez by a mobile mechanic friendly with the guys there. I'd taken my car in for sn alignment, which they did efficiently - but then they pointed out to me that my tires, being a decade old and dry-rotted, were liable to blow out at any time, and of course recommended that I gave them replace the tires. I got the sense that they weren't just trying to "upsell" me and were truly concerned. I was surprised that it took them only two hours to order the tires, replace them, and do another alignment. As for the cost, it was tires, man - and labor is what mechanics get paid for. I dealt mainly with Gabriel and Rudy; they're great. The taco trailer out in front of the shop serves delicious food, by the way. read more
