Test drove a used truck from a nearby dealer and brought it in. Son (mechanic) told me $80 to do an overview and see if it's worth my money. When I went to pick it up, he pointed out things needing attention, and I went to pay him, and he didn't charge me at all! He explained since I may not even end up buying the truck, why waste my money? I assured him if I ended up getting it, my first stop would be back at his shop to pay him for the hour he spent looking it over. Very nice guy! First visit in September. Took my Wife's red 2001 Explorer to this busy little shop, right around the corner from my office in downtown Martinez. Just needed an oil change. But, as I talked with Son I realized something was different about these guys. He tilted his head and listened to me really carefully, as I talked about a coolant concern. Looking slowly around, I noticed the early morning sun glancing off the hood of many customers cars parked at various angles. I thought to myself, "Wow. These guys are busy." Later, I returned to find they not only changed the oil, but diagnosed the coolant issue and fixed it. And, you know, they didn't even charge me for fixing the coolant problem? So, having had a good first experience, I took my White 2004 Lexus in this morning, for a long overdue brake job. Quinten came walking out from underneath a blue Van to greet me with a warm smile. I expressed concern about a low air pressure light that has plagued my beloved Lexus four or five years now. He squinted as he carefully thought about the puzzling warning light that won't go away. I've asked other shops if they could just disable it, including the Lexus dealership and the reply was a bland, "NOPE". When I asked why several different mechanics just said, "'cause it just doesn't work that way". But again, these guys are so different than that. Quintin carefully and patiently explained how the four lines go separately into the sensor unit, and there is even a sensor at the spare tire. That the computer could not be altered as a solution... So much better to hear than "NOPE". At the end of the day, I got a great price on the job, a careful diagnosis of my tire sensors, and he even printed out a help sheet showing me where the reset button is. I took my Nissan Murano (2008) to Martinez Automotive on Berrellesa because the front end had an occasional odd vibration. They charged me $600 to fix what they claimed needed fixing near the front brakes, but the problem remained. Engine light intermittent and rarely on, as I told them when I brought it in. They didn't scope it, so I bought a OBD2 Code Reader myself and it said "#4 cylinder misfire," which is a combustion issue. I won't take my car back to them. read more

So a couple of days later it started again, so I immediately brought my car back and Thuy was able to hear it. He was able to explain what it was and told me I had 2 options. One was to repair or to replace. He said let's try to fix first and if it doesn't work then replace. He was able to do it the same day. AND I was not able to get a rental car and was not going to be able to pick up my kids after school so he adjusted his schedule to make sure my car would be done in time for me to pick up my kids from school! Went and got an alternator/pulley replaced. Car worked fine for one day, now battery light and engine lights are on. I've owned this car 8 years and never had those lights come on. I drive two weeks on a bad alternator and pulley and my service lights have never come on. I have to give a HUGE shout-out to the 2 brothers, Son and Thuy, for doing a splendid job on my car this past weekend. My car repair was scheduled to last a dreadful, six and a half hours. Thankfully, they made my car and time, top priority. I got out of there two hours less than the projected time. Son even squeezed in a quick smog inspection. Price wise, they are less expensive than big name auto repair giants. I paid $469 for them to install a brand new water pump and timing belt. On top of that, they did a recommended coolant flush. Not bad, right?! What separates Martinez Automotive from the rest of the pack is HONESTY. It is extremely rare for any car repair shop to not tell a white lie or exaggerate just to make a sale. In some cases, shops deliberately cause damage even if a car is perfectly fine. Let me deviate from the great guys at Martinez Auto and rip them b*tches at Martinez Meineke in half. When I moved to California in early December of last year, my car was in dire need of an oil change. I received numerous coupons from businesses around the area. Sadly, chose Meineke for the wrong reasons - brand name and inexpensive oil change ($19.99). The service lasted an exhausting 3 hours. Gullible me, agreed to replace one of the (supposedly) faulty motor mounts. During the repair, they ordered the WRONG motor mount. Since it was nearing the end of the business day, they had the audacity to ask me to leave my car and come back the next day so they could leave work right at 6. B*tch, are you f*cking kidding me. Finally, the part's guy came back with the original motor mount and the Meineke employee reinstalled it. I paid for the oil change and could not wait to get the effin' out of there. Little did I know, that was the least of my troubles. Within 5 minutes after leaving Meineke, my car was engulfed in smoke. Upon inspecting under the hood, those sloppy a-holes forgot to wipe the excess oil on and around the engine. Tried calling them, but, to no avail. For about 2-3 weeks, the inside of my car reeked of burnt oil. Not only was it nauseating, but, other drivers could smell it. Besides the wretched odor, my car has been making these weird noises. Moral of the story is do your research. Yelp is a great place to start. Also, do not always give in to coupons. Naturally, we gravitate towards cheap products/services since we as humans like to save money. In the long run, you may end up paying more. I had the gang at Martinez Auto and friend's dad (a mechanic) look at my car. They both concluded that the motor mounts and arms were fine. Bottom line: In this day and age of greed and unscrupulous sales practice, Martinez Automotive is a welcome relief. They center their business model around hard work, knowledge and honesty. Son and Thuy truly care about its customers. They do not make up lies to gain business. If your car does not need any repairs, they leave it alone. Their prices are ultra-competitive, too. Yelp got it right this time. Martinez Automotive deserves the highest possible rating. ;-) read more

It hadn't been serviced in a couple of years, at least, and wasn't starting up well on cold mornings. I called and asked for it to be checked out and to fix whatever needed to be done. Thuy kept the car overnight, did a thorough check of everything and told me it looked fine, diagnosed the startup problem and told me how to easily fix it with no auto repairs required, changed the oil, and returned it to me (including giving me a lift to and from my house!), all for a total of $30. I think my jaw actually dropped when he told me the price. Amazing. And I have never, ever, met a kinder, more helpful service technician. Wow! read more

They didn't have my filter in stock, but immediately ordered one and had the oil change done in less than half an hour. Final price was just $56 and change (my car requires full synthetic), which is a good $25 cheaper than other quickie oil change shops or the dealership. They were very friendly and the price was fair. However, I should also note that rather than just fixing the rear brakes along with the front brakes as I had expected, they informed me that they had determined that the rear brakes still had another three to four thousand miles left.
