One of the most affordable restaurants in Cayucos that actually stays open until after 5pm! This place was small in size, but big in taste. I ordered the Garlic Shrimp with rice and black beans, and it came with tortilla soup and chips and salsa before. The shrimp was very large and they didn't skimp either. The flavor was mouthwatering. My husband got the chicken flautas which he enjoyed, but when i tasted they I felt they were cooked with more of a pasta sauce filling. It was too tomato-y, unlike any other place that I've tried flautas before. They weren't bad tho, just not my fav. Maybe they tasted like that because this is a Mexican/Italian food restaurant. They have two TVs inside and had a game on. It was lively since there was a large group that took up almost half the restaurant. It's not quiet, so if you want privacy go somewhere else. All four of us in my party got the chimichangas, 3 chicken and 1 beef. They were cooked well, plenty of meat on the inside and perfectly crispy on the inside. I am an Italian-American from New England. Martin worked for the previous owners, New Yorkers. His Italian recipes are genuine. Though we think his pizzas are some of the best, we crave his Chicken Parmigiana. The dish is loaded with tangy sauce and two chicken breasts. The sauce has lots of garlic, wine and other spices. I had the lasagne and it was decent. The sauce is more of a sweeter sauce and good. Being served chips & salsa before knowing which route I'd rather go - Mex or ITL food - was kind of weird. I am only reviewing dinner. This was my first time at the restaurant & we came based on good reviews. Myself, my daughter & her friend (both teachers). I ordered the shrimp tostada. For $12.95, it was small & I was hungry about an hour later & I had to eat a lot of the chips & salsa as well. The beans in the bottom of the tostada were watery, when you add beans, drain off the liquid. So it was gross & I didn't eat that part of it. I ate the shrimp which were about 2 inch size. There just wasn't much in it, so I was quickly done. The chips, by the way were ok, but too thin for my taste. The problem was the salsa was totally mild, with no kick from any chiles. I asked if they had a spicier salsa (it is a Mexican restaurant) & they said no, but she offered to bring us some jalapeno peppers & we said yes. However when we got our bill it had $1.50 added for the peppers, which I wouldn't pay because she never said they were at a cost. My daughter ordered from the Italian menu & had the sundried tomatoe ravioli. They were basic cheese ravioli actually, with lots of red sauce, & I think she had asked for pesto sauce, but we were in a hurry to get to a Hearst Castle night tour. When we asked the waitress why there were no sundried tomatoes in the ravioli, she said, oh they are in the dough. We didn't believe that, the dough was totally white, no tomatoe hue or bits or anything. I think they may have been frozen, but they could have made them, IDK. Nothing special. It came with some sticks of garlic bread, which was made from pizza dough. Her friend ordered the fish tacos, which came with beans & rice & she said it was good. The food took a really long time to get to our table, so we only had about 5 min to eat & then had to leave. So she had to pack up her meal & never got to eat most of it. I didn't look at the time, but I think it took probably 45 min. to get our food. It wasn't busy at all when we got there. I felt like the food was nothing special & I would not go back again. If you can't offer good salsa at a Mexican restaurant, it is not worth going. It was also too watery. When I asked about the $1.50 charge & I asked to have it removed because we were not told it would cost anything, the waitress, instead of just saying, I'll take care of it, said she would ask & it too a really long time. She finally came back with a marked up bill & said that "he said they would take if off this time", & said with the tone, like I was a naughty child. It was rude. We came into town for the weekend and thought we would give this place a try since the ratings on here seemed pretty good & knew our 1 yr old could enjoy some rice and refried beans. Our first clue should have been that this place was empty. We walked in and no one was around to greet us. We heard the one waitress come in from the back door so we waited for 5 mins and we were talking so someone would hear us and come over. Another 5 minutes goes by and my husband walks over and asks if they are even open, the waitress apologizes and seats us. We ordered our food and I ordered a strawberry margarita. She tells me it's a wine margarita so I tell her that's fine. It was terrible, all you could taste was strawberry syrup. We ordered an enchilada with rice and refried beans, a cheeseburger, and the Martins special burrito. Our food came out in under 10mins, she told us the plates were very hot. The plates were sooo hot and our food was still cold. It was obvious the food wasn't fresh and had been warmed up in the microwave to melt the cheese on top of our food. The enchiladas had no flavor and was drowned in the enchilada sauce, the rice and beans were cold not even my little one would eat it and I didn't blame him. My husbands burrito was made wrong and everything on the inside of his burrito was also cold. The only thing fresh that came out was my daughters burger and fries. We paid $57 dollars for a meal we very visibly did not eat because it was terrible. The service was just as terrible as the food. Not authentic Mexican food at all, can't review on the Italian food because it was no where on the menu nor did the waitress even mention it. Go to the Sea Shanty or Schrooners. If you're really wanting Mexican food go into Morro bay. read more

I've been staying in Cayucos this past week, eating at all the restaurants, and this is the place for me. The food is hot and delicious. The servers are friendly and efficient. It's not fancy, and they don't pretend to be anything more than what they are; a bit off the beaten path, offering good home cooking. My favorite were the fish tacos. Good for Mexican, not sure for Italian. I eat breakfast at Martin's more than anything, and I think their Mexican breakfasts are very good. Love the Huevos Rancheros and New Mexico Enchiladas. The salsa is good - sometimes spicy, and I like that you can get black beans or pinto beans instead of potatoes. The place is comfortable and the servers (at least in my experience) are very nice. Recently had tacos there for dinner, both chicken and carnitas. Both were good but especially enjoyed the carnitas. Prices are maybe a tad higher than normal Mexican, but this is Cayucos. Overall, I really like Martin's and am happy to have good Mexican food nearby. As for the Italian on the menu - it's a remnant from the days when this was Lou & Shenley's and without Lou supervising the kitchen, I have never been tempted to try it, so I don't know anything about it. read more

I went here for dinner with a friend for the first time over the weekend. We basically ordered from the Mexican menu, with the addition of a small pepperoni pizza, just because I wanted to try the pizza. My friend ordered the chile rellenos and I got cheese enchiladas suizas. Both were very good--what I call "comfort" Mexican food with lots of stringy cheese and tasty sauces. The pizza was surprisingly good--probably the best New York style pizza I have had in a couple of years. One strange thing, the list of available toppings does not include ham or canadian bacon. Although there's not much ambiance, partly due to the TV blaring in the background, the service was excellent. The food was brought piping hot and the server was always ready with refills on drinks. I will definitely be coming back. UPDATE: After going a second time, I took a closer look at the pizza menu. They do in fact have ham--it is listed as a "special" topping. read more

I was skeptical about a restaurant that served two different types of foods, but I'm no longer a skeptic. It was good. Our family had a little bit of Italian and Mexican. The marinara is light and the bread that comes with the pasta dinners were delicious. I had a calzone that was loaded with meat and cheese. It was big enough to feed two people. My husband had the camarones Mexicana. It was also delicious. The flour tortillas tasted homemade, but not sure if they were. Chips were fresh as well. His meal came with chicken tortilla soup that needed a little salt. All in all good cheap meal. When your tired of the fish restaurants this is a good place to change up the taste buds. read more

I was visiting my parents in Cayucos and they had not tried this restaurant yet.. We went and realized it was a Mexican and Italian cuisuine. They do not like that type of food. We stayed anyway and they ordered patty melts and they told me they were the best they had . Salads were fresh. Good service, nice people, and the Taco salad I had was wonderful. For example, I ordered their shredded beef enchiladas - that beef was slow-cooked and held so much flavor. Be careful! This place is poorly run. Not only were the employees kids sitting next to us at a table with their phones volume full blast and eating, I saw them in the kitchen at one point with the cook, no clean hands, with their phones. No awareness. Highly doubt any of these employees have food handlers cards and no management in sight with any serve safe awareness. I also saw an older guy in the kitchen that was eating with a group as well. Probably an owner since their table had a reserved sign on it when we walked in. Again, just poking along in the kitchen in his jean shorts then right back to his meal. To the food. It was ok, but the service was not. Ordered a beer, and watched it sit by the tap for 15 minutes while the 3 servers stayed in front of the window waiting for something to do. No awareness of their tables or the guests needs. The final straw, which killed us, was their dishonesty with the bills. They attempted to drop the bills with hidden gratuity charges. When we did the math, all of our bills (3 total) did not add up. This was due to gratuity being added on as a beverage charge. You could see it in the servers face that she was guilty of trying to put one over on us. Tourists beware! The inmates are running this prison here, and taking full advantage of the tourists, and unfortunately whoever owns this place. Never again. read more

But just not "wow". I hate to give this place an average review because it was one of the most welcoming establishments I've been to in Cayucos. You can feel the love and caring!
