Our goto place when in doubt. We loooooved the Tofu Thukpa and Tofu Thenthuk so much the first time we visited this place that honestly we've never tried anything else here ever. One time I deviated from my favorite to try something else on being jokingly reprimanded by one the servers (who already knew our usual choice even on our third visit), but came back to my staple right back. I totally crave the Thenthuk when I am suffering from a bad cold. Everything is as fresh and yummy as they come. I went to this place for a late lunch/early dinner and ordered a beef dish for around $15 and a chai tea, the waiter asked me if I wanted the dish with rice I said no rice but I will take some bread instead. When the food came it was more like an appetizer small dish with pieces of beef and potatoes with a thick dark sauce. The whole thing would fill up half of a dinner plate. It was rather greasy and the sauce was lumps apart from the grease. The food was barley warm. I had an appointment to attend and I did not have enough time at hand so I just ate and did not say anything. When the bill came I was surprised to find out that it was over $20 and they have also charged me for the two pieces of bread $3 something! I asked the waiter about it and he said that's the way it is. I said that I thought their food was expensive for what it is. He took my credit card and he alerted a lady who on her way to my table conversed loudly with a group at a front table and the waiter Ina foreign language. When she got to my table she yield in English while shaking the menu in her hands "Did you see the menu?" I said "she went back to the front and ordered the waiter behind the register "Charge!". Meanwhile, she resumed speaking the foreign language to the people in the front table. I put on my coat and head to the register to get back my card and the woman was still loudly arguing to the group about what I said and they were all staring at me. I told the woman that I was just giving her my feedback and there was no reason to get so angry about it. She start yelling at me in English saying that I saw the menu. I tried to explain to her that I never denied seeing the menu not was I refusing to pay what the charged me. Another woman jumped into the conversation from the group sitting at the front table and said to me "I am the owner and I am asking you to leave" as I was getting my credit card back and preceding to leave. I am not quiet sure why a business owner and/or a restaurant manager would act so poorly when a customer shares their feedback. I reiterate that this restaurant overcharges for the quality and quantity of food they serve. Apparently family owned. they hurdle at a front table and overreact with anger if you tell them that you are unhappy with their restaurant performance. Not to mention that the angry woman (before the whole scene happened with me) was on the phone talking loudly expressing her dislike of some lady whom she spoke of in unflattering terms and exceedingly described how irritated she was with her and asked the person on the phone to explain that she, the angry woman, is a busy person and important person. This went on for over 15 minutes while she was standing in the middle of the restaurant in a total disregard for the customers. read more

Came here for a Saturday afternoon lunch buffet. First of all, $8 for a lunch buffet is a steal, so A+ for that price. The food was great -- I've never had Tibetan fare before so I can't compare to any other places of similar cuisine, but I'm talking taste, presentation, all the basics -- it was delicious. The best part and worst part about the new Martsa is how close the tables are to each other. I was trying to concentrate on the menu full of unpronounceable items (Gyathuk Chocho? Churue? I'm too white. I just point.) but all I could do was eavesdrop on the tables around me. So depending who you are, you'll love or hate that part. mmmm momos..I just couldn't get past them. My boy whose actually been to Tibet, said these were good, the wrapper was a little chewier than the little old grandmas who sell these street side. We ordered beef momos half and half ( half fried and half steamed) couldn't say which one i liked most. I loooooved the tamarind sauce and hot sauce combo, delicious. the server was adorable, i mean literally adorable. I wanted to shrink her and take her home in my pocket. so attentive and sweet. We also have chicken noodle soup, which was ok. I guess their broth is more on the lighter palate side. but everything was hot and delicious. They apparently had a lunch buffet going as well, but I wanted momos all day every day. We ended up getting two ordered. mmm. read more

Totally disappointed with the service provided, never visiting this place again, we went in around 8:30PM and were told by the server that kitchen closes at 9pm, so we placed the quickly , then the server slams the bill on our table at 9:10pm without even asking us while we were still eating, then he had the audacity to ask us to pay quickly since, he had to go home and can't wait till customers are done eating. This is more of an update on this restaurant than a new review. I recently ran into someone I know who used to work at the cafe that was associated with Martsa on Elm and next door to it (it became the extra space for the restaurant when they expanded). They had kept in touch with the owners (the Martsa family, for those reviewers annoyed/perplexed by the restaurant's name) and told me something I didn't know, that the owners had sold the restaurant "at least a year ago" and had moved back to India because one of their children had been selected as a new lama. I don't know if they were in the process of selling it when I was last here or already had, but either way, it explains the poor food and poor service I had on the last visit I reviewed. Knowing that the excellent chef is no longer running the place, I don't expect to return here again. read more

Never had a bad meal here in about 10-12 visits. I always get steamed veggie momos - they are very good, especially with the hot sauces. I usually get veggie plates with curry - love it. I've had the chicken curry and that was great, too. The staff is laid back - some here say they are not uber-friendly, but that's fine with me and surely it's fine with most of davis square, since it's not exactly the friendliest neighborhood to begin with. I also like the fact that they never push you out the door even if the place is full (which it usually is) - they make you ask for the check, very cool. I love it there. read more

Overall, it's a three-star place -- the food is distributed between excellent and perfectly decent, the place has a comfy, cozy air, the staff are usually friendly... but, the main courses don't come with rice or bread, neither of which are cheap, and the portions are small compared to other places, which drives the price up. Three of us went for dinner tonight, and ordered one chicken, one beef and one lamb dish with two servings of rice, and a plate of fried momo came to $73 (with tips and taxes) ... and it left us with plenty of room for sundaes for dessert at another place. Without soups, dessert or drinks -- not even tea or coffee -- that's a bit steep. I'm still going to go back because I miss my momos from back home, but I think I'm going to stick to the appetisers -- that part of the menu seems *very* promising! I would like to offer a counter argument to those who say that the food is tasteless/bland/forgettable. This place is Tibetan, but they also offer more familiar Indian and/or Americanized dishes for those who like that kind of thing. Probably one of my favorite places right now. Didn't order too much but: -Tofu Chili (Super tangy and just the right amount of spices. Also came with a side order or white/brown rice) -Baked Bread (Plain warm bread, prob would try another kind of bread next time) -Indian Chai (SUPPPPERRR YUMMY. Recommend!) My description of Martsa is like many others, the fusion of Indian and Thai. The food is great, and the service is as well, however- The service here is a little slow when it is busy- which is most times. Staff is very friendly. The momos and the chaat are great. The chili chicken and the almond chicken are two favorites, there are also several vegeterian options. No alcohol is served here (no license). If you have never had Tibetan food this is a great place to start. read more

I've been to the Sunday lunch buffet a number of times - it is tasty and much lighter than either Diva or Namaskar across the street. The choice for vegetarians is somewhat limited (3 out of 6) but the momos, lentil soup and salad make up for that. Perhaps more disappointing is that the Sunday menu doesn't seem to change which makes it a bit boring after a few visits. Dinner is a much nicer experience. Great veggie choices and appetizers and soups. The service is friendly but unremarkable. read more

This place has fantastic food. More than that, it tastes different from the "standard" American Indian fare you get at many restaurants (chicken tikka masala, etc). I can't speak to whether it is authentic Nepali, but it is delicious and it is a different flavor profile from many of the other places. Some favorites: -Tamarind chicken (I'm going to learn how to cook this ASAP!) -Chicken momos -"spring rolls". Note these are not the kind of spring roll you get in Chinese restaurants...its their term for a Himalayan original. Loved it, especially the nonveg version. read more

We started with the momo combo and they were ok (I only had the veggie one) and to be honest it kinda just seemed like frozen spinach plus overdone potato inside good-enough fried dough. I had the veggie curry with sauce supposedly containing nuts and cream. I only found a few nuts and the sauce tasted like something I've made before.. like when I just dump a bunch of veggies in a pan plus a guestimated amount of one of those curry spice blends. The veggies themselves were overdone and I once again wondered if they were from a frozen package. So basically it tasted a lot like pseudo-Indian food I've made where I just kept adding stuff and tasting until I declared "good enough." It had no kick, either! I added the spicy sauce they had brought out for the momos and it made it quite a bit better. Though I didn't mix it well enough and after getting way too much in one bite finally had to flag the waiter down to ask for our first and only water refill. And as someone else said... no free rice? REALLY?! And once you buy the rice it's not a very generous portion. My friend had the lamb and spinach dish. He wasn't very impressed either and I just plain don't like lamb so I can't really judge it. Hope this is just a bad place and not a reflection of all Tibetan food... I was a long time customer but they finally lost me after absolutely terrible service. My bill was $92, a considerable sum for this particular restaurant, and I feel I should have been treated much better. This is the first time in my life I didn't leave a tip. Tasty tibetan food. It's a small, relatively no-frills sit-down experience, but the waitress was friendly and the service was prompt. We ate a vegetarian course of: vegetable momo (vegetable dumplings with spinach in them) - 6.5/10 tofu in mango sauce pan-fried tofu and peas in curry sauce noodle with tofu string beans The string beans and the tofu in curry sauce were especially delicious. The tofu in mango sauce was good as well; the noodle and momo were decent but not spectacular. Definitely recommended overall. read more
