I just came for the food but Marujuu exceeded my expectations in regards to the quality of food and service. When you walk in, the staff immediately provides a welcoming atmosphere beginning with all of the staff greeting you before you get seated, to the server providing English-translated manga (specifically Chainsaw Man and Attack on Titan) for my family to read while we wait for the food. The wait for our main dishes, which were three hamburg plates, didn't take much time at all and we probably waited 20 minutes at the most, if not less. I've only been here once but the food was amazingly delicious and filling. The regular sized hamburg plates provide enough food for the average hungry stomach! I think it was interesting that the pasta on the plate had a subtle tomato flavor to it but yet it still went well with the demi-glace sauce I chose for the hamburg. The hamburg itself had juices flowing out of it with every cut I made into it, and the extra fried egg I ordered paired well with the demi-glace by making it have a creamier but yet still really savory taste to it. I quite literally savored every bite I took. The Calpico Sour (alcoholic drink) that I ordered was super cold and refreshing. I could barely taste the alcohol with how well they mixed everything in it! Price wise, it does cost ~$24 for the main hamburg dish without any add-ons, and depending on what you get for add-ons (or if you decide to order the more expensive rib-eye), it can get a bit expensive. Lunch in Kaimuki, Honolulu, Hawai'i... Irene, Daniel, and I decided to try this relatively new business named, Marujuu. It specializes in Japanese-style hamburger or "hamburg". Daniel and Irene parked in the paid metered stalls nearby. I walked a bit and found free street parking up the hill. Daniel arrived first, before the opening time of 11am to secure a spot in line. Good move because they do not take reservations and they're quite popular right now. Located at the former Koko Head Café and Chubbie's, this space between the parking lot and 12th Avenue, Marujuu had some cool anime decor on the walls. We had a table next to the open door in the back corner by the men's restroom. The glare from the outside was a bit annoying, but the breeze was refreshing! A pitcher of iced water was left on our table, along with plastic cups and a basket of utensils and disposable towel. Service was very attentive and helpful. I was surprised when they ladled the gravy over our hamburgs. I enjoyed all three flavors that we tried and shared: Green Onion Salt Marinade, Sweet Garlic Soy (a bit spicy for me) and the Signature Onion Sauce. Our favorite was the Original. Each meal came with a soup, pasta, veggies, and white rice. You can upgrade your rice and hamburg to larger portions for a slight upcharge. If I'm being honest, I had the Hamburg and oyster plate, the burger was a little red for my liking and plain, i needed to add salt and pepper to give it taste. The fried oyster was like any other fried oyster dish. Service was okay, when they came to the table they were super nice but you needed to gain their attention, which I'm assuming they are trying to mimic restaurants in Japan. The table tops are for parties of 3+ but there was one table that seated 2 people. The center is a U shape counter seating. From what I noticed, it's seating for individuals and parties of 2. The menu is easy to read with photos. Customer service is friendly and they have a pitcher of water on the table for self serve. You choose what you would like in regular size or large size in the Hamburg section. Then you choose which flavor you would like to try. There are 5 different flavors available. Step 3 is adding on any toppings. You can upgrade your vegetables, pasta size and rice in steps 4-6. The other menu sections are slightly different but you would basically choose the size you would like. It's hard to choose since they all look so good but we decided to go with their Hamburg options. I dined with Irene and LB. We all ordered a different flavor and shared so we could try more of the menu. The three flavors we ordered were the Signature Onion Sauce, Sweet Garlic Soy Glaze and Green Onion Salt Marinade. They all came with onion soup, pasta, white rice and cabbage. My husband and I were really excited to learn about Marujuu and couldn't wait to try their food. I immediately fell in love with the anime decor and soundtracks playing in the background. My 3-year was entertained by the Pac-man arcade console and Pokémon on the TV. The servers were incredibly nice and patient as our rowdy kids created one mess after another (plate on the ground, spilled water, crayons all over the place). As for the food, I highly recommend the burgers with their original sauce to start off as a baseline. We also tried the Wagyu steak. Each platter comes with a cup of soup (which was delicious but also fatty), a side salad (it could have used more dressing), and a side of spaghetti. The steak was very bland and dry even though I requested medium rare. For dessert, they have a self-serve soft-serve ice cream machine. I couldn't find the price for the ice cream posted anywhere, but I had two fussy kids with me AND I also wanted ice cream so I filled up 3 cones. My husband later told me that the ice cream was $4 each. Now that I know what I like from their menu, I would come back again if I had a serious meat craving. Love hamburg in Japan so I was excited to try this place out. Soft opening was on Monday and there was quite a line before their opening lunch hour. They are located in the former Chubbies dine-in restaurant in Kaimuki. The restaurant has counter and booth/table seatings. We got the Marujuu originals (regular size 200g) which come with vegetables, pasta, miso soup, and rice. Gorgonzola cheese sauce hamburg: The Gorgonzola cheese sauce was good. Very gooey and cheesy. It does have a hint blue cheese taste. The hamburg was delicious. Very tender and juicy. The pasta was plain but with the sauce it was flavorful. Green onion salt marinade hamburg: The green onion salt sauce was on the saltier side. Wish there were more of the green onion garnish on top. Overall, very good hamburg place. The sauces are on the saltier side. The hamburg were excellent. Service was great. They welcome feedbacks. There are two sizes, regular (200g) and large (300g). The regular side was filling for me. The sauce was poured table side once your order comes out. The wait for our order does take some time since it is their soft opening. Our order took over an hour. Came here because of the amazing reviews and was not disappointed. Will keep it short and sweet. Walked in with a party of 2 with no wait at all because we didn't mind dining on the counter. Ordered the hamburger steak and Demi glacé and the butter nori fries. Fries were bomb, but best enjoyed while hot! Entree came out and I was disappointed that my hamburger steak was too pink for my liking. The staff was so kind and accommodating. They took it back with no questions asked and brought it out a few minutes later cooked to perfect temperature. Want to mention that it was the chef who brought it back along with apologies for the misfire. I really appreciated that. Everything we ordered was delicious. Had to stop myself from filling up on the yummy soup and the homemade garlic seasoning for the rice is a nice personal touch that makes you feel like you're having a home cooked meal with family. I was walking to my car to go home when I saw that Marujuu had taken over the old Chubbies and before that, the old Koko Head Cafe location. It was lunch time and they had their menu outside so I decided to hop in for a quick lunch. Marujuu specializes in Japanese-style hamburger steak. Once inside, there are counter, booth, and table seating. When seated, you can pretty much see the entire layout of the restaurant as it's on the smaller side. The walls are decorated with anime posters! Haha. So let's get to the hamburg. So mainly you'll choose your hamburger steak (Regular or Large) with a number of different variations and combos on the menu. I got one that came with Ponzu sauce, miso soup as an appetizer, and garlic fried rice. I also added on a sunny-side egg and fried onions cause why not?! The hamburger steak also comes with spaghetti noodles which I thought was an odd pairing but I guess it works. Haha. The hamburger steak does take some time to come out to you as each order is handmade. But once I got it, it was so good!! Especially paired with the Ponzu sauce I opted for which I was dipping into before each bite. The other side items were just okay for me as the hamburger steak was definitely the main event for me here. Service was good and the servers seemed really nice. It's still new so I'm the hype is real. Lines out the doors and parking is...well, it's Kaimuki. You're gonna pay or you're gonna circle for a while. Located at the old Chubbies which was also the old Kokp Head Cafe the interior is pretty small. Walls are adorned with posters of anime movies and series. The food is....ok. pretty pricey for the amount they serve but it was tasty. Maybe it's just smaller portions because Japanese? I dunno. Still seemed pretty steep. The hamburg was good. I got the sweet soy garlic sauce and it was a classic Japanese tasting sauce. The fried garlic rice (upcharge) was also really tasty. A little strange that the dishes come with both noodles and rice tho. Also tried the yuzu soda that the server repeatedly told me wasn't sweetened. It was super sweet. Also tart, but definitely sugary. Service was fine. Nothing spectacular, but nothing terrible either. It was packed so we expected service to be a bit on the slower side. The strange thing is they pour the sauce onto the burger once they bring it table side. I think that the food was delicious. The hamburger steak was very juicy and flavorful. The onion sauce added a kick to it. The juice of the meat was very delicious and the soup broth had unlimited refills! I also want to mention that the quality of the rice that they served with the hamburger steak was just as delicious as the meat itself - really good quality rice. Would I go back again? Sure! I'm actually not too huge on hamburger steak, but I'd make an exception for this place. Also extra stars for the anime posters/manga plastered along the walls. As soon as I'd discovered this spot from a reel that I'd seen from onlyfoods808 on IG, I'd made a note to check this place out during the few days visiting Honolulu - there's no other restaurant to date that I know of in HI that specializes in Japanese Hambaagu, except this spot. My Dad and I stopped by when the restaurant opened at 11am on Tues., 2/17/2026 and since it was a weekday, we were the only ones there at the time - few other diners came in not too long after. All the staff that we'd encountered from the manager to the server, were very nice and pleasant to speak to, they provided excellent service. The restaurant has a lot of posters inspired by Japanese anime and bright yellow walls - there's some booth style seating but most are tables and counter seating. It was a bit hard to locate this restaurant at first and we had to ask around for directions - it's located on a smaller side street, on Mahina Ave, the entrance is between 12th Ave and Koko Head Ave. Parking at the meter lot can be tricky - we were lucky with the timing when someone pulled out right at the time we were looking for a spot, otherwise, you'd have to park in one of the other lots that are nearby. We both ordered the regular size of the Hambaagu that came with pasta and veggies, along with rice. The beef soup was excellent - flavored very well. We opted for the demi glacé sauce which was seasoned just right with a nice texture to it. It's an additional charge for this, but totally worth it. The ground meat in the Hambaagu was juicy, tender and flavorful - as close as you can get to what you'll get in Japan. In fact, the last time I'd had anything similar to this was at a yoshoku restaurant called Kubota Shokudo in Higashikanagawa, Japan during May 2024. 100% recommend this spot and I would absolutely return for a bite to eat the next time that I'm in Honolulu, this place will not disappoint! read more

Tonkatsu, omu rice, curry rice, and of course the braised hamburg steak drowned in rich demi-glace. The last, the BRAISED hamburg, is THE reason for the visit to Marujuu. The "puck", loaded with filler, bound by eggs, seared then braised like a meatball in a beefy demi, mushrooms added for good measure, before being plated with some steamed veg and potato, a wasted buttered spaghetti and a side of simple white rice to mop up all the juicy, thick, meaty goodness. A climactic ending for sure! Too simple? They have other things, grilled burgers, chicken, even a ribeye doused in onion gravy, soy gravy, or even gorgonzola cheese sauce , add a sunny side up egg, bacon, and avocado, with garlic butter rice if that does it for you. Eat what you like. Climax your way. Prices in line. $25 and up depending on how creative you are with toppings. Minimal but friendly enough service. Yeah, it's not Japan. We got the chicken karaage for an appetizer with the wasabi shoyu sauce and it was good but they didn't give us plates for the appetizers so we had to eat over our own hands. I can't say the portion for the Hamburg is worth it. It's a tiny party for $24, the cabbage was bitter and the side pasta really didn't taste like much. Unless you have a craving, skip it. As reservations are not taken, all orders are made 1st come, 1st served and are made to order. As a result, it's better to be there when they first open, instead of after diners have ordered, as there will be a long wait. Interesting tidbit about Japan and its beef industry. Beef is expensive in Japan due to its geography, as not much land is available, making the cattle industry much smaller than that of the US. As a result, hamburger steak is popular and a more affordable way to serve an otherwise over costly meat. On one of my first church mission trips to Saitama, Japan, the Japanese residents get very excited about steak and perceiving hamburger steak as regular steak, much to the different perspective that we have for hamburger steak. The interior is clean, bright and u-shaped with a counter, small tables, and booths that can easily fit 6 people. The walls are yellow with anime theme photos. Hours of operation are Tues to Sun 11a to 2:45p (2p last call) for lunch and 5p to 9p (8:45p last call) for dinner, Mondays closed. Metered parking in municipal parking lot adjoining the restaurant. I love the food and atmosphere of this place. It has a lively, family friendly vibe. The Japanese hamburger steak is delicious, and they have a large selection of sauces. I'm also a huge fan of their Nori butter cheese fries. I can eat an entire order myself. The place is busy and they do not take reservations. Also, I'm not sure if they don't have enough servers but I'm often waiting quite a bit for someone to take my order. On both occasions that I've been here, I've had to flag someone down to take my order. That being said, everyone is very friendly and the food is great. Service was horrible. We went early to be seated first. We received the hamburg dish but the egg was served separately because the timing of the meal prep was wrong. The most aggregious experience was the error and mishandling of the bill. First, it took forever for the bill to come. We found out what happened because our check went to another party who paid for it - when it was given to us, it was someone else's credit card. We let the staff know it was our bill, but not our card. The staff confused, came back and asked us if the credit card belonged to us and we said nope. As we waited for them to fix the mix up the staff proceeded to give everybody else their bill and forget about us even though they made a mistake. We waited for 10-15 minutes watching other tables get their checks and leave. We decided to go up pay in the front, and our bill was there- they just didn't bring it to us. No apologies or anything. We came here on the day after Thanksgiving and we were seated right away! This new Japanese "hambagu" restaurant is in the old Chubbie's place and Kokohead Cafe before that. No ressie's, first come first served. The place was packed and bustling but the servers were extremely solicitous. Lots of tables and there was bar seating in the middle of the room. On the walls were Japanese anime art- pretty fun. It took a little while before we got what we ordered but there is a sign next to the table that said each dish is made to order so it may be a wait. We ordered the large (300 g) $28.50 to share and the regular (20g). Our large was with the signature onion sauce and the regular $23.50 was green onion salt marinade. Both came with a salad plate of white rice, miso soup and pasta (a very surprisingly small amount- just a few strands of boiled spaghetti !) The hamburg came on a sizzling hot plate and the server poured the sauce at table side. We asked our onion sauce on the side so the server left the gravy boat with us. The hamburger was very good, moist and cooked just right. Nicely seasoned. HOWEVER, even though the flavor of the sweet onion sauce was really good (sweet with the taste of onion just right, not overpowering) and my cousin liked the green onion salt marinade, we all found the sauces super salty! It could be brought down a level IMO. The large (300mg) was enough to share but we're not big eaters and the my cousin said the regular (200mg) was just right for a person when eaten with the rice. We also ordered the chicken salad ($6.90- small). Cousin liked it and found the chicken soft, moist and nicely seasoned.She liked the addition of broccoli too. My hubby ordered the seaweed salad ($5.90- small) greens with cucumber, tomatoes, topped with seaweed and ocean salad. He said it was nice and light and flavorful. Recommend! There was always a server that was roaming the room and checking on the tables frequently. There was a pitcher of water on the table so we didn't have to ask for water all the time. They start you off with an onion soup, which is nice and had a great flavor. The hamburg steak plate though, was just alright. The hamburg steak isn't super tender and a bit tough to cut into. The pasta is very bland, would love if it had more of the tomato sauce. The demi-glaze sauce definitely helps the lack of their flavor in all of the components of the dish. Small place, Anime posters and manga everywhere, very attentive service, food itself was okay, got the wagyu with reg onion sauce and noodles and rice. kinda salty the sauce you put on top so it's good with the rice, my only gripe was the hot plate is way too small for all the food so i'd suggest to use that plate of rice. had a too thick cut of meat, they also had ice cream machine for $4-$5 a cone but i sadly didn't try. big parking lot around the corner. read more

I like the atmosphere of this place makes me feel like I'm in an anime with all their posters and playing pokemon on the TV. Food We got the hamburger with ginger soy garlic and the wagyu steak with the wasabi soy. I liked the hamburger the best and both sauces were really good. The wagyu steak was okay but I think I'd try the ribeye next time since it's about the same price. Really liked the wasabi soy sauce but could get salty at some points so dont get that one if you dont like salty stuff or wasbi. I was definitely pretty full after eating the large steak portion. Soup was just okay and the spaghetti just seemed out of place to me. Food took about 15-20 mins to come out but we were the last order and everyone got their food already so I can see how it takes a while if it's busy. I would definitely come back to try the other meat options on their menu and try their soft served ice cream too. We walked in at 8:07 pm and were seated shortly after. When we were seated we had a short time before they were doing last call so didnt have much time to look at the menu. They definitely were trying to close by 9 so better to get in early so you're not rushed. I saw some comments about issues with the checks going to wrong tables with different cards. Wasn't going to mention it but the guy gave me my paid check back without my card! I thought I misplaced it and was looking for it until he brought it over casually... hope they get better as they're open longer. Wait time was a little long, which they warn you about. Lively and loud atmosphere. The servers were the sweetest and amazing. Fries were great and hamburg was alright for price! read more

I understand this place is probably high demand right now since it just opened, but I have a hard time understanding how there are lines out the door here. The portions are very small for such a high price, the hamburg is dry and crumbly, the skillet comes out room temp rather than hot and sizzling. The sides are plain boiled spaghetti noodles and cabbage, which I personally feel are not very appealing when soaked in beef drippings. I ordered something to drink and I received something that was different from what I ordered. The server explained that what I asked for wasn't available, and then they charged me for the incorrect drink anyway lol... we were also missing several items from our order and had to hound the servers several times to receive them. Went through the same thing when we asked for the check... I don't know, I really was looking forward to this because I love hamburg steak. But I just can't justify coming back here. read more
