My review of Marvin Davis Construction and Contractor Marc Tuttle sounds similar to many other 5-star reviews. Hot water/mold damage to the entire main floor, pandemic issues, insurance company. But my situation was that this home was where my 90-year-old mother lived. I live 1000 miles away. After moving my mother out to an Independent Living Community the fun really started. Marc Tuttle was a godsend. He helped me make excellent choices with the very tight budget our Insurance company gave us. (He squeezed every last penny from them!) His design of our kitchen was beautiful and the star of the house. His communication with pictures, phone calls, and updating texts over the entire lengthy project was imperative to my sanity. He and his team treated this house like their own. As we soon came to realize, we decided we should sell this home of 60 years and keep my mother in her new senior community. Marc's updated design and excellent workmanship with Miguel and the rest of the team turned this sweet aged home into a gorgeous magazine cover! But where I truly commend Marc is his patience, kindness, and understanding when dealing with our very difficult Reverse Mortgage Company. You really can tell a lot by a person when the going gets tough and Marc handled this nightmare with professionalism, humor, and integrity. Marc and his team were amazing to work with. We had a bit of water damage from a backed up drain in the kitchen and it completely flooded floor and into the common hallway of the condo. We had glued wooden laminate on the floors that needed to be ripped out and replaced with new tile. The dry wall in the kitchen and the common hallway also needed to be replaced. Marc came in and carefully assessed what needed to be done and let us know in detail how long it would take to accomplish the job. Everyone that entered the condo wore a mask and kept a safe distance. When things were about finished they were painting the walls and noticed a small difference in the shade of paint that we had purchased. Marc let us know that they were also going to paint the surrounding walls so we could not tell the difference in the shade. We really appreciated that! I had some water damage in two of my bathrooms from an upstairs neighbor's toilet tank (not the bowl) which overflowed. I got bids from three different contractors. Marvin Davis Construction (MDC) gave me the most detailed bid at a reasonable price. Marc Tuttle, Assistant GM/Estimator and my main point of contact at MDC was very detailed and professional. His bid was well documented and most thorough. Once I decided on MDC and signed the contract, Marc got his drywall guy out to my home quickly. After the drywall work was completed, Marc got the painter out as well as their carpet guy to repair some carpeting in the hallway leading to one of the bathrooms. While doing the job, a couple of unforeseen issues popped up. Marc handled the issues with patience and professionalism. The job took a little longer than expected but Marc and his guys completed their work in a reasonable amount of time and to my complete satisfaction. In 2012, our home was turned upside down when the drain line backflowed into our guest bathroom and flooded the lower floor. Fortunately our claim was covered by insurance and we picked Marvin Davis from the list of Premier Service contractors. Cody Gerstell was the project manager and did a great job coordinating all the work to repair our home. During the reconstruction, we opted to upgrade our guest bath. We were really happy with the results. The wall repairs were truly seamless and the tile work meticulous. In 2014, we called Marvin Davis Construction again when we were ready to remodel two other bathrooms. Cody gave us a quote and the pricing was very fair. We also liked that he itemizes all the work so that we can see the cost breakdown and make tradeoffs to meet our budget. We selected and purchased most of the material on our own and Marvin Davis provided the labor. Again, the results are beautiful. We really appreciate the fine workmanship and attention to detail. We had water leaking from the upstairs bathroom down through a recessed ceiling light downstairs. After ServPro came by to dry the damage, we were left with a hole in the ceiling, half the carpet pad removed in my master closet, the toe kick of the vanity removed and a lot of baseboard removed in the impacted areas. I had called several contractors on Yelp, and after getting three recommendations from State Farm on contractors and calling them all, I knew I was moving forward with Marvin Davis. Marc came out, inspected my home, and was very professional and clear on what needed to be done. We also wanted the work done before the end of the month, and Marc said he would try to accommodate it. The job went super-smooth, literally Sat - Mon and Marc checked in several times to make sure I was happy with the work. As much of a pain water damage is and getting repairs done are, Marvin Davis made the experience so much more bearable and I am very satisfied with the end result. We worked with Marc Tuttle to remodel our bathroom. Overall, we had an excellent experience and are pleased with the way our bathroom turned out. Marc set our expectations correctly in terms of time (8 weeks) and money with clear details about how long each phase of the remodel would take. He was clear about all the costs (material, labor, overhead etc) which helped us decide which materials we wanted to buy ourselves. Marc and his crew were very professional and we were able to reach him whenever we needed. With each phase Marc was at our house and we went over the plan together. On a couple of occasions during the remodel we did not like the way things turned out (like the shower niche not being correctly aligned), Marc agreed and rectified the problem. Welcome to my first ever Yelp review. I set up a Yelp account just so I could submit this long overdue review of my experience with Marvin Davis Construction. Since I have written only one review, so far, it's possible that this may end up at the bottom of the reviews under those that are "not currently recommended" due to some algorithm Yelp uses that I don't understand. In any event, if that happens, please know I am a real person who actually had the pleasure of working with this company. As I said, this is overdue, my kitchen remodel having been completed two years ago. But perhaps that is even better, since I've had time to use the kitchen fully, and, yes, I'm still madly in love with it and have had no issues arise. We had the unfortunate experience of sustaining water damage due to a burst faucet hose, which sprayed hot water from under the sink while we were not home. Our insurance company sent out the water damage folks, and after many days of fans and dehumidifiers running inside the house and in the crawl spaces, it was determined much to our shock and awe that the entire kitchen had to come out. Mold was already growing! This is not a large kitchen, and we took the opportunity to change the layout to add more counter space, extending a wall to make room for adding a peninsula (love that drawer microwave!), moved the fridge to a different wall, put in custom cabinetry, ran a gas line to accommodate replacing the old electric cooktop with a new, larger gas one, to name a few changes. Our project manager, Marc Tuttle, was a dream to work with -- professional, knowledgeable, patient, organized, extraordinarily responsive, and just an all-around nice guy with a great sense of humor. Not everything went perfectly on the first pass; there were the inevitable hiccups to be sure, but they were resolved promptly. Marc was terrific in dealing with the insurance company's many requirements, and in arranging for all the permits and inspections. Samantha in the office was a delight, as were all the members of their long-standing crew. Attached are some before, during and after photos. While everyone of course has different taste in materials, etc. and my particular choices in that regard may not be to your liking, hopefully you can get an idea of the quality of workmanship. After a good engagement with Marvin Davis on a small project in our condo, we decided to go with them for a larger project at our new house. Because we were removing a load bearing wall, along with other work, my wife and I didn't mind paying more for a company whom I had experience and seemed reputable. This was a TERRIBLE mistake and we will never give them business again. We had three major issues with Marvin Davis: 1) They left EXPOSED nails on stairs in my 14 month old daughters bedroom and told us the contract was complete. Complete!! Really!?!? Nails, that have been on that staircase for 40 years!!! If we didn't catch it and she slammed her hands down on those nails, what type of medical problems could she have caught? We don't know, but the fact that they said they were "finished", yet left a dangerous area in my daughters room is COMPLETELY unacceptable. Pictures are attached. 2) Miscommunication: We signed a legally binding contract with Marvin Davis. In the contract, we wanted them to replace our old hardwood with new flooring. In the agreement and quote, it clearly stated that the flooring quotation included Labor AND Material. After they completed the demo, they came back to me and said it was a mistake, the Material was not included, the quote was just for labor. How convenient that after half of our job was finished, they backtracked on their obligation in the quote and expected us to absorb the cost of their quote for Labor (which as referenced above is more expensive then other vendors), AND the cost of Material. Had I known that to be the case originally, they were far more expensive and we would have went with the company (who were wonderful to work with) who ended up installing our floors. We ended up settling with Marvin Davis for work performed and had another company install the floor - but again, the miscommunication is absolutely unacceptable when we are spending a LOT of money and had to budget. 3) Miscommunication #2: Not once did we receive a project plan from Marvin Davis. Everything was on the fly, which would have been fine if the communication was better. After reaching out to them multiple times to confirm Carpet demo and installation on a Saturday, they didn't get back to me until Friday night at 7pm. We were hosting a party, I missed their call and didn't get a chance to listen to the voicemail. I figured because they didn't confirm with me at all Friday, they wouldn't show up. Well - that was wrong. His carpet team showed up and we hadn't done any work to remove furniture in either of the bedrooms. We were expected to spend our Saturday morning, not with our daughter, but moving furniture because they couldn't confirm with us a couple days in advance. If you want to be treated like a second class citizen, have them say "no" to you a lot, move your own furniture around the house because they wont do it for liability reasons, have terrible communication and customer service, along with potential to live in a DANGEROUS and HAZARDOUS environment with your family, then you should choose Marvin Davis. Perhaps the rest of their engagements go well and we just had a bad experience, but for the safety of my family and terrible customer service, i'd never give them our business again. read more

We were introduced to Marvin Davis Construction and Marc Tuttle our project manager through our insurance company. We had a water leak in our roof directly over our living room due to one of the rain storms of 2017 and Marvin Davis was one of the suggested contractors to repair everything. After interviewing several contractors, considering their YELP posts and the management team we were convinced that we had made the right decision to use Marvin Davis. Once our roof problems were fixed, Marvin Davis took over. A demolition crew pealed everything damaged back to a solid, dry base to begin re-construction. All of the work was done by employees of Marvin Davis which included wall insulation, dry wall, carpet removal and installation, curtain removal and installation, baseboard and crown molding, electrical and finish painting. The entire project went as well as expected with constant contact with Marc Tuttle. The interruption in our daily life was minimal. Every one of the contractors that were used was courteous, friendly and easy to communicate with. They all knew each other and worked well with each other. It was like having a talented family helping us recover from the trauma of having our home damaged so much. Overall, we are very pleased with the high quality of their work, the promptness of everyone and they finished the entire project on time and budget. Our second project with Marvin Davis came on the heels of our living room re-build and was to re-build our back yard pergola. After 20 plus years, our old one had seen better days and the wood that was used then, was not redwood. Marc set a schedule of 2 weeks to dismantle the old one, remove all of the debris, rebuild the new one with redwood and finally paint the entire pergola. This project came in on time and within the budget. Not my first choice, nor was it my second. I was referred to this company by my insurance company, and they have probably performed good work for others in the past, but I think working with me was one of their "off" periods. Communication was poor and there was little accountability or simply taking charge of situations. Unfortunately, finger pointing doesn't help the customer, build schedule or the overall program. In speaking with my local home improvement store, they didn't say much, but their hesitation told it all. They suggested other contractors and even themselves and gave advantages and disadvantages, but they did suggest to stay away. While at "that store" someone overheard my conversation and explained their not to nice situation. While my situation was likely out of the ordinary for this company, it was still a negative experience. Call them up, get a quote, and if you like them, go with them. I'm just saying that my experience wasn't stellar and frustrating. The situation wasn't criminal or would ever end up in court, but it got my blood pressure up more than I would have liked. read more

It was a great experience working with Marc Tuttle of Marvis Davis Construction and would highly recommend them and would definitely use them for any future construction needs. With water damage done to a rental home, they were contracted through my insurance carrier AAA. It was an unfortunate time just prior to the holiday season displacing the tenants, a family with a newborn. I explained the situation to Marc and he was understanding doing his best to work around other separate but related work of a repipe being done. He coordinated their work to assure no delays and actually completed the job several days ahead of schedule and even a little under budget. Not only was the job completed early and under budget but they also had done items that were not a part of the job's scope such as patching and painting areas from prior work, installing a door stop, and replacing a missing light fixture from the prior work done by others. Also, although taking more work, he also suggested ideas such as removing the entry tiles to replace with the flooring being used throughout the home without adding to the cost. All items that could've been charged but instead gave me comfort he was not out to nickel and dime me, very unexpected but gained my future business and a deserving positive review. I'd definitely use Marvin Davis Construction and would specifically ask to work with Marc. It was a pleasure working with him as he always responded promptly, was patient listening to my situation, and made sure everything was to their high standard before I even did a walk through and although there's always a few truly minor touch ups, he made sure they are taken care of at our convenience. The repairs were done well and timely, flooring was beautiful, and tenants were happy to be able to move back into the home several days earlier than expected allowing them to settle back in time to enjoy Christmas in their home with their newborn. We've recently completed three distinct (yes, three!) home remodeling projects with Marvin Davis, project managed by Marc Tuttle. Did everything go perfectly...of course not. One complex bathroom project took longer than planned, but, it still turned out great! Even with the delay, we planned two other projects with Marc. Why? 1) A commitment to quality work and customer satisfaction. Marc wasn't happy with any subcontractor unless my husband and I were happy with the job. And, Marc was creative about finding solutions to problems when they did come up. 2) Marc is a great communicator. There were never any surprises and he was careful to understand what we wanted, and make sure everyone was on the same page. He was always our advocate when we were dealing with outside vendors. 3) As much as possible Marc ensured the work was done around our schedule to minimize the impact of the remodel projects on our daily lives. 4) Inevitably, some surprises are found during a remodel, but the prices only changed when we increased the scope of work. I think 3.5 stars is about right, so I've entered 3. Marvin Davis does a lot of remediation repair type work (water, fire, etc) through insurance company contracts, however I hired them directly for a home remodel. My remodel was to take approximately 6 - 8 weeks, and in the end lasted approximately 10 -12 weeks. I will briefly describe my experience working with this company for that 10 - 12 week period... Charles ("Chuck") Driscoll is the boss (but not the owner) and, in the case of my project, Marc Tuttle was the project "manager". I use the quotations for emphasis because I'm really not sure what sort of managing he actually performed. I know he called around various suppliers and provided pricing options and things like that, but as to managing the day to day or week to week contractor milestones, he did none of that. Nevertheless I found Marc to be very polite and cordial, somewhat reliable (about 2/3 of the time he'd follow through on what he'd say), and very much inexperienced in terms of construction and the construction business. So a lot, probably a majority, of my communication went through Chuck Driscoll who seemed to be keeping Marc up to speed behind the scenes. Maybe this inefficiency is what led to numerous frustrations with Marvin Davis down the road... Marvin Davis runs their business by employing some trades in house and subcontracting out other trades. Some of their subcontractors are ex-employees and all seem to know each other. In the beginning, Marc started informing me of a particular trade that would be onsite a particular day and this was greatly appreciated because Marvin Davis and their subcontractors were not on site every day. In order to hit their 6-8 week quote, I felt they were going to need to be, but they informed me that they got unexpectedly busy just after I accepted their bid. Well, it seemed that their increased workload started to result in communication breakdown on my project. Soon, subcontractors were showing up at my house unannounced and they were asking ME what their job for the day was to be! And they were showing up in an unintuitive order as well. Example: the gutter contractor showed up before the roofing contractor and installed new gutters. Well, big surprise, the roofers then showed up and dented up the brand new gutters in the process of doing their work. There are similar examples of substandard management and work along the way, as well. Drywall contractors leaving an absolute mess in our main living area for the weekend on a Friday afternoon, Marvin Davis employees not cleaning up after themselves each day or even regularly. And each time I brought issues like these to Chuck's attention he reacted either in an accusatory manner (as if I was lying) or in a completely ambivalent manner as if he simply didn't share my concern. One word that you will never hear come out of Chuck Driscoll's mouth: "Sorry". Well, Chuck, sometimes the little things like a mere apology go a very long way ... even as far as making the difference between rehiring your company in the future vs looking elsewhere. Now, on the flip side, Marvin Davis did send out other subs who not only did good work but also respected our home while working in it. The flooring guys, the painters, and the finish/trim carpenters in particular. These workers - on their own - I would rehire any time. But as employees of a larger firm, they may not be in the habit of taking on side jobs. I don't know. So overall what I found with Marvin Davis over the 3 or so months I worked with them, was some undeniably good contractors who paid a lot of attention to detail, some unprofessional contractors who couldn't care less that they were in your house or how they treated it, a lack of planning and managing in general, and a boss who made my frustrations that much worse due to his "never admit fault" mode of operation. And yet, with all that said, I have not in the end had any issues with the work they performed. I am, in the end, satisfied with the result despite the fact that getting to the end result was a very frustrating few months! And that just about sums it up!!! 3.5 stars read more

We were referred to them after we had a water damage roof leak claim by our Insurance Company. They are professional, prompt, and keep their promises. They were prompt. Withing 2 hours of calling our insurance company, they had someone come out and place a tarp over the our damaqed shingles on our 2-story home while it was "pouring" outside and kept us from having further damage. We had some water leak into an upstairs bedroom and the repairs by all the different contractors (sheetrock, painting, carpet, and electrical) were handled through Marvin Davis and were finished to our complete and total satisfaction. read more

They are easily the best in what they do. They did my bathroom when there was a leak and my insurance company gave me their name. They were so good and Marc was so helpful and kept us posted on the progress. Since then I used them for a remodel and once again recently for another major work. They are easily the best. Constant updates and follow up emails keep us informed and they clean up so well after work is done and the place looks perfect after they are done. We are selling our house so needed to remodel master bath, update guest bath and paint everything on a tight budget and tight timeframe! We got 3 bids and while Marvin Davis wasn't the least expensive, they were the BEST choice by far!!! They say to trust your gut in life, and when I met Marc, their project estimator who was my primary contact, I just knew this guy was a class act and trusted him!! You will too! It has been a year since my family had to suffer the devestating lose of or home due to a multi unit fire. The experiance as you could expect is one of sadness and a sense of not knowing what to expect after losing all that you have worked for. The day of the fire we were overwelmed and there were so many people handing out cards saying we can help you we were freaking out. I walked into my home which was soaking wet from the the fire fighters putting out the fire and met a young man on a computer ( Mark ) and he was just working away inputing measurements and information about our home. At this point I had fought off all these people trying to get a stake in the repair of our home so I starting asking Mark questions when his boss Charles walked in. They never asked me anything so I did all the talking and questioning. I knew with the straight foward answers that these guys were no pressure and knew this bussiness well. On our first day we found some relieve in knowing we were on a path of not only our home but our lives to be repaired. These guys came in fired up and ready to get this job done correctly and we were able to get the other three unit owners to use Marvin Davis also to speed up the repairs ( No waiting on other contracters to complete there section first ). What a great experiance not only did they have the plans ready for the city they preped the area and were ready to go with a crew that was incredible and worked so well with each other it was like family!! Once the plans were approved with much hard work from Charles checking and getting the city to respond faster! work begun. This was the best part not only did they start right away they wanted us to be a part of everything nothing was second guessed. We were able to change our minds and add items that we wanted without any ( No we can't do that ) it was always not a problem. Our house and the other three units came out so nice and everyone was so happy we can't believe the change. I could write fifteen more pages on how Marvin Davis's staff treated us like family and were always asking us prior to most of the tasks since they are a get it right the first time company. I decided to remodel my kitchen. After getting 3 quotes, I went with Marvin Davis. I am SO happy I did!! This company is accurate in their estimates, workers are on time, and my kitchen and floors throughout the house were done within the estimated completion time. If there were any concerns, Marvin Davis was willing to fix them ASAP. During the remodel I had a hard time making some decisions, Chuck actually came with me to help guide me and make suggestions... How awesome is that? Samantha was extremely helpful in keeping me up to date and if I had a question she was prompt on getting back to me with the answer.
