I would say that service was four stars, but tech issues would be three stars. I reached out to this practice about two hours before it opened through its online intake form. Basically, the intake form was to ensure that a patient's insurance was accepted. Fortunately for me, someone from the office called me within 10-15 minutes of the office opening, and I was able to secure a same day appointment for my eye situation. Upon arriving to the Silver Spring location, I saw that the office has a couple of kiosks that patients must use to check it. Ok, I get that on paper this probably seemed like a good idea. Also, nowadays, I think businesses want to show forward-thinking by incorporating technology into everything (whether it's needed or not). However, the problem (IMO) with using a kiosk at an eye care center is that many patients (like me) probably will not be able to see too well. Also, many elderly patients probably will not have the ability (and patience) to use these sorts of machines. In fact, while waiting for my turn, I noticed that the workers at the front desk had to help most of the patients with the kiosks. The doctor that helped me out was pretty nice and very compassionate regarding my situation. Fortunately for me, my eye issue was pretty straightforward and required very minimal medical intervention. Phew. While preparing to leave, the doctor sent my prescription to my local pharmacy and provided a paper copy of the 'script'. Unfortunately, when I arrived to my pharmacy about 45 minutes after my visit, the pharmacy had not received the script. No worries because I had the paper copy script as a backup. Even the doctor mentioned that they gave me the paper copy because they weren't sure if the prescription would go through electronically. Unfortunately, the doctor did not include their printed name or their license number, so the pharmacy could not fill the prescription. Because of this situation, the pharmacy and I had to call the eye care center several times to have the prescription sent to the pharmacy. I will say the folks from the eye center who helped me with this technical issue were very nice, but it was kind of annoying that a process that's supposed to take a few minutes ended up taking an hour. Do not go to the Maryland Eye Care Center! My wife went in today for a routine eye exam. She had not been for several years and was having trouble seeing. The optometrist's assistant dilated her eyes before the optometrist even saw her, thus invalidating the ability to actually test her vision. He did not introduce himself. He did not apologize for the mistake on the dilation and said he could not test her because she was already dilated. WHOSE FAULT WAS THAT!? Then he told her she had 20-20 vision which is just not true or she would not have even been there. Then said that her reading glasses should be 2.0 based on her age! This was a screw up from the beginning and no effort to make it right and no apology. She took 2 hours off for work to be given dilated eyes and no useful information. Terrible!!! THis place is unprofessional and uncaring. They left me waiting periodically for an hour or more, forced a procedure I didn't want and didn't explain to me why it was necessary and pressured me even when I showed discomfort . They repeatedly passed off responsibility and blamed me because in code I have a "Strong prescription." meaning it was my fault for things I have no control over. To be fait, I went there because I'd had bad experiences with big chains like MyEYEDr. I went with the intention of getting glasses but after the time has elapsed 7-10 business days they told me, I don't have my new glasses yet. I called today and just got passed around until I hit a voice mail box. If you're in the medical profession, your duty of care is to the patient and not your bank account. Unless they clean up their act and deliver better service, I am seriously considering making a complaint to the Maryland Department of Health and would encourage others to do the same. They got one star for the nice doctor, but the whole service is totally scam. Took my Mom there to get new eye prescription, provided them the insurance info. They told us that it would cover 80%. They charged us $20 to fill out the MVA form. Then also sent us the bill for $180, and the insurance only cover small part of it, and we had to pay $110. I don't know about the other locations but the one on University Blvd in Silver Spring is so bad. It's very difficult to book an appoitment. The lines can be busy for at least one hour or so. Some of their medical assistants are not compassionate at all. Besides , they are rude and arrogant. You can be put on hold for long time without any excuses or they hang up. Absolutely do not go here for a vision exam/glasses. It is set up as a scam to get you to buy glasses. They did not provide contact prescription, and acted like they did. Glasses were super expensive but I needed them ASAP, still took too long to get to me. I must say the doctor was nice and treated my eye condition well and was very smart. However, for a basic vision exam this establishment is not worth it. They tried to charge me for something after already letting me know that a certain fee was waived. I called to make an appointment. I was hung up on while I got my insurance information. I called back and made the appointment. After making it I immediately called back as I realized, after looking on line, that they have both optometrists and ophthalmologists. I needed the latter. No one asked me why I needed an appointment or which professional I needed to see. When I called back less than 10 minutes later I was told I did not have an appointment, as they could not find it despite my giving them all my information. I was put on hold. Then hung up on, again. My family and I have been patients of Maryland Eyecare Center for years and it had usually been a good experience. This most recent visit has me questioning this practice very much. My aunt had her routine eye exam and at the end of her visit she decided to hold off and not buy her eyeglasses at the time. When she requested her prescription, she was told that her insurance didn't allow the release of her prescription unless she paid an extra $60! She's elderly and on Medicare. As far as I'm aware, Medicare wouldn't tell a doctors office to withhold and charge extra to release a prescription. It's against the law. You can't charge a fee for prescriptions, and they are obligated to give the patient his/her prescription following eye exam at NO PRICE! I have called this office and was told the same...pay $60 or no prescription. Their excuses are it's a "Refraction" fee (which they should have a BIG sign that says we charge "extra" ) or the insurance won't allow us. Honestly this is a SCAM. You have the right to your prescription automatically at no fee, they can not withhold it! I've called other offices to check if this is a common fee and it's not.. read more

The worst eye care I've ever received in 50+ years of wearing glasses and contact lenses. You will wait 45 minutes to see an optometrist - Dr. Patel. Then she will refer you to an opthalmologist. He will make you wait 45 minutes. Then he will refer you back to the optometrist, and you will make an appointment and she will make you wait for your new contact lenses and they will not be right. So she will order a new trial pair and you will have to wait another ten days. Then she will not show up for the appointment with you. GET THIS: YOU WILL HAVE AN APPOINTMENT AND THE SO-CALLED PROFESSIONAL WILL NOT EVEN SHOW UP. So another optometrist will fill in and send you to the optical department where you are supposed to order your lenses. You order the lenses and pay with your credit card. Two weeks later your lenses are STILL NOT ready. Why? Oh, because the optical person went home sick that day and never ordered your lenses.TWO months after first visiting so-called MD Eye Care Center you still do not have your contact lenses. The positives: I really liked my eye exam with Dr. Toledo-Espiett; he seemed like a very competent eye doctor and was nice. All staff I spoke with have been very friendly. The not so great: they were able to give me a test set of contacts in my prescription so I assumed they had them in stock. It was not until after I paid for two boxes that the staff person told me they had to order them and they would be in within 3-5 days. Okay, I should have asked up front, fine. But then no one from the office contacted me that my order was in. I had to call Wednesday (13 days after the order) and check on it. The guy that answered put me on hold to check and verified the contacts were there. I told him I couldn't pick up until Friday (today) and he said no problem. I just stopped by this morning and the women assisting me could not find the contacts. She verified that the system said they were there but she can't find them and the person who I spoke with Wednesday isn't there until later today. She's going to check with him when he comes in to see where he might have put them, but that means another trip out there which is super inconvenient (if they even find them today). I will definitely never buy contacts from them again. I also agree with other reviews saying it is crowded all the time. This place is a scam!! I came here for just a l routine eye exam and ended up having to come back for tests which is no big deal; if it need to get done it needs to get done and given my eye health history it's understandable. BUT I remain quite skeptical if it's a norm if the practice to have patient return for tests (test not covered by eye insurance but medical insurance). The practice staffers were so insistent I provided my medical insurance info in addition to my vision insurance. When I arrived for my appointment after waiting for the check-in staffer to look up from her phone I was greeted. The front desk staffers were short and not very friendly. I arrived to my appointment ON TIME but didn't get called back until an hour after check-in. The MA calls me into a treatment screens me for medical history and vitals, no problem BUT prior to my eye exam dilated my eyes provides no shades and just informs me of the sensitivity to light for a few hours (I've NEVER required this procedure to be performed for a routine eye exam) I see Dr. Luna who was friendly and professional and answered all my questions. She stated how she could not finish her examination due to the dilation of my eyes and she was only able to complete her exam for far sight. I would have to come back in for some additional testing in 2 weeks and my medical insurance would be billed for the following visit. I called my vision insurance and they were never billed for my initial visit. I check in for my follow-up visit and I notice my medical insurance is listed as my primary and my vision is secondary. I ask for a copy of my bill from my initial visit and was told they could not provide me with a copy of my bill or itemized service statement so that I may ensure the right insurance company is being billed (vision and not medical). I called my vision insurance company prior to my follow-up visit and was informed they hadn't received a claim from the practice. I believe so do the reeling medical industry (private practices) practices are trying to find ways to stay afloat but this ain't it!! I have been a patient of the eye care center for many years. 12-10-20 was the worst visit in all of these years. Not because what happed in the back, but at the front. After I finished everything, I come out to frond desk to pick up my eye dilation glasses, and print out paper for eye drops, before I leave the office I ask the young lady if there is anything else, she said no and I left. As soon as, I got in my car I noticed that I don't have my prescription for my glass. Then, I went back to the counter and tried to get the paper. However, the lady at counter point me to ask the lady at the glasses area. The lady at glasses who sit close to front desk, ask my name and the form of payment, but I said to her that I was just picking up my prescription. She rudely said you have to pay $60. I didn't like her altitude so I went back to front desk to asks her, why I have to get charged separately for prescription, and I have to deal with someone else, who is trying to make a sale on eye glass and not MD Eye care. However, the young lady told me that I sign in on the computer, when I woke in. So, I went back to lady at the glass, she ask me to use my insurance. I didn't even know why she has to charge my insurance for the service she never give, just to hand the paper form the printer. Finally , the glass lady gave me the paper. However, on my way to the door rudely she said WATCH OUT THE DOOR. I stop and ask her what she means by that. She rolled her eye and didn't say anything. So I left irritated. When I pick up the phone and make an appointment I thought I was dealing only with Maryland Eye Care Center, but I didn't know there is a trick there that they pass you to the vender which trying to sell you a glasses. Well i dont even feel like giving one star but i have no choice...as soon as i approached the receptionist i was told to pay a 35$ fee for missing appointment...that i didn't get any reminders or confirmation for...was so disappointed with this that i just paid the 35 and left with out taking my exam...now i just feel like i just got robbed. It would have been much better if they take care of my eye first and then talk about the rest later. Horrible experience, I would give no stars if I had the option. After prescribing me expensive eyedrop (although I mentioned please prescribe less expensive brand), they forced me to schedule a follow up visit which they charged me again as much as a full visit without receiving the service of a visit. Also they refused to claim for contact lenses from my insurance and when I claimed it myself, they insurance sent them the check and they did not really follow up with me until I had to go there in person for the 4th time to get reimbursed by them!! Will Never ever set a foot in their office, should have believed bad reviews for them. Wow! Bordering on upcoding...ethically questionable. There was nothing wrong with the actual testing, which was thorough, however: Very long wait time to be taken back to clinical area, and long time between testing procedures. Also, they told me I had to return for another appointment so that they could dilate my eyes. Generally this is done at the beginning of the first appointment, but they must have wanted to get maximum reimbursement, which they could not have done if they had done it on the same day with the other tests. Since I was there for primarily a retinal exam, they ensured this way that I would return. So I lost half a day's wages and had to pay for transportation. To add insult to injury, the doctor patronizingly patted my knee when he told me my eyes were "just fine". Since I am aware of what people write in a patient's record as retaliation when the patient stands up for themself, I had to grin and bear it. Yes, when you end up on Medicaid, you swallow petty humiliations every time you see a provider, fill a prescription, or ask a question. read more

Went here b/c it is close to my apt and I need an ophthalmologist, not an optometrists. Start to finish it took over 2 hours. (the receptionist said that is normal) The waiting room was full. In total, I was seen by 3 technicians, 2 of them were in training. The experienced woman was kind, professional, thorough yet efficient. The other two, not so much. They were nice but I had no confidence they were doing things correctly, plus they were gossiping and whatnot as I was doing my tests. The experienced technician had to redo at least one of them b/c it wasn't done correctly. After doing my tests with the technicians, there was another wait in a crowded hallway to see the doctor. The doctor, Dr. Bryant, was fine. Nice. Competent. *shrugs* nothing special or extra attentive. (Honestly I prefer my old optometrist :( but b/c of some medicines have to see an MD every six months) 2+ hours later I was finally done with the exam and they asked if I wanted to choose glasses. um no, I had to go to work. My appt was at 9:50. I left after 12 noon They were nice enough to print my prescription for me. I returned on Saturday at 11am to choose glasses.... but the door was locked even though it says they are open until noon. I took my prescription elsewhere, ordered glasses.
