Walked in for the first time and had heard great things from my mother in law and my parent's who live in big canoe. For me this was a bad experience. I was hungry and was told they offered Gluten Free bread. Remind you this is my first time ever stepping foot in this place and an older women was at the counter, never greeted me but I asked her do you offer Gluten free? Her response was nothing out of her mouth but to point with her finger at a note that read Gluten free bread sold out. Then another women appeared i am guessing the owner and I told her I had driven a long way to get here, was hungry and if she could think of anything Gluten free that I could eat. Her response was no today. Didn't even think to offer me a salad, cheese and meat rolled up, nothing. Sent me on my way to find another place that actually cared to have my money and find me something I could eat that was gluten free. I am a business owner myself and found both these women to care less about q new client walking into this place to eat. I was in total shock that I was treated this way when I went out of my way to drive there and have a finger point at a paper instead of trying to help me by speaking. A great local spot to get great sandwiches on homemade bread that is incredibly delicious. The chipotle chicken sandwich is fantastic. The chicken salad on grilled cranberry walnut bread is also very good. They also have delicious homemade baked goods that are a must. Try the strawberry cake or pound cake. You won't be disappointed. What an amazing hidden gem. We just got back from a day trip to Gibbs Gardens and were famished. We stopped before closing and had chicken salad sandwich, potato salad for a side (a must try!!) and a slice of one of the best banana cakes we have ever tasted. read more

We have lived in Big Canoe for almost a year and have been frequent customers of Mary's because the food was fantastic, especially the cakes. We bought two layer cakes for Christmas here and were not disappointed. Our family raved about them. Today, however, we went in to buy individual pieces of cake only to find out it is no longer their traditional slice of 3 layer cake, but a small, one layer piece of cake for the same price. VERY DISAPPOINTED! Outrageous price for a small piece of cake. We like to support small local businesses, but will strongly reconsider going back to Mary's if this is how they do business. read more

The Mary's Favorite sandwich (pimento cheese, bacon, and tomatoes on grilled jalapeño cheese bread) was outstanding. We also had a generously layered club sandwich (it had bacon too) and a slice of chocolate cake, and then we bought more cake and muffins to go. We came around 2 PM, and it appeared most of the bakery items had been sold. Next time we'll arrive a little earlier. read more

First of all, I LOVE Mary's Bread. They offer it at 61 Main as part of one of the appetizers with ricotta and pancetta and some other yummy goodness. And it's my most favorite appetizer ever. However, when this little "we now serve coffee" sign showed up in foothills (slightly outside of Big Canoe) I thought that it may be another good breakfast place. Anxious to try it I stopped by late one morning... like 10:30ish. You have to go in a larger building that holds several different offices. I walked through the back towards the front where this little "we now serve coffee" shop was located. They had cinnamon rolls on display, which was the only breakfast like item that I saw. Well, plus the coffee. As I was ordering Mary, I think, said she had just made some of the lemony bread, so I ordered a slice of that instead. With a coffee. What I noticed, though, was that a steady stream of people were coming in to order loaves of bread. They had several on display when you walked in. It smelled like how one may imagine a quaint little bread shop would... fresh, home-y, and slightly sweet. Not a lot of space for sitting at Mary's Bread. Just one table inside and 5 tables outside of the shop, but still inside the building. I sat down to work with my coffee and lemon-y cake bread. I quickly noticed that Mary's is also more of a lunch establishment as the lunch crowd came in and ordered sandwiches. I noticed the chicken salad looked good. My lemon cake-y bread was good and the coffee was great, but if I go back to Mary's it will likely be for lunch. read more

Mary's makes the Cranberry walnut bread that is used for sandwiches at Gibbs Gardens. If you have had a sandwich there, you will want to get a loaf because it is absolutely delicious. Her cakes are also amazing, like grandma used to make with real fresh ingredients and full of flavor. The yellow cake was so good and moist and the chocolate icing really chocolaty! Mary's is the best sandwich shop / bakery within 100 miles, not sure why it doesn't have 5 stars from all those positive reviewers. Pimento cheese sandwich is awesome but so are all the other sandwiches. The fresh cakes will ruin your diet program so be careful. Sweet tea is as good as it gets and any of the homemade breads will impress. read more

Go there. Now. Run. My dad has lived in Big Canoe for about 10 years now, so I'm up to date on all of the restaurant coming and goings and let me tell you, there's a lot of coming, and a lot of going. I think the only "constants" have been Fuego, Forno, and Home. The rest of the store fronts are mainly housed by poorly run and managed "temporary" restaurants who, unfortunately, usually seal their fate within 6 months. Mary's is now a constant staple here. The first thing we talk about when we get here is when we're getting our chicken salad on cranberry bread, and the last thing we talk about before we leave is what we should pick up for the drive back to Orlando. I've tried their salads, sandwiches, baked goods, cakes, and bought loaves of bread they have for sale. EVERYTHING is a hit, NOTHING is a miss. For visitors, their setup may seem a bit strange, being in the lobby and 2 spaces of what looks like an office building, but they have tables inside to eat in and are speedy with their to-go orders. We visited Big Canoe, GA twice before we bought property there. In our condo, were several cookies from Mary's Bread Basket. They were very good. We were out looking for speciality coffee, but no luck in Big Canoe or Marble Hill. We decided to go to Mary's breakfast. OMG the biscuits are awesome - to die for as a matter of fact! Love her grits. Would highly recommend Mary's to everyone!!!!! The local's love it too. Wish there were more restaurants, coffee places, and shopping near Big Canoe, GA. We love our coffee and to dine out chain restaurants as well as very nice expensive restaurants. I hope we will not regret our decision about moving here. We love Big Canoe!!!!!! Maybe, by the time we build there will be more development, shops, coffee houses, and dining. read more

EAT HERE...the only reason I didn't give it five stars is because it's sort of awkward waiting to place your order if the line is long and there aren't a lot of tables inside, but we were up there during leaf season, so maybe the number of inside tables is adequate all the time. Yes, the chicken salad on the cranberry walnut bread is wonderful, but you will want to try the reuben, too, and the ham, which I requested provolone on instead of the cheddar on the menu. Get it grilled...yummy! Mary's offers a choice of six different fresh-baked breads for your sandwiches. Everything tastes so fresh and delicious. The sandwiches easily feed two, so eat half and save the other, or split with a friend. The cookies and cakes are to die for...the oatmeal cranberry pecan cookie was wonderful and the toffee cookie was the best I'd ever had--they only had one left so we all split it. The carrot cake and apple cake were fabulous, too. The lady behind the counter was both short with us and welcoming, if you can be both. If you are in the area of Big Canoe, you want to try this place. We will go back. Delicious! read more
