The customer service here was GREAT, Amy was a helpful server & very kind, my coffee mug was never near being empty. However, I had Mary's Feast off the menu & it was simply average. If I could give out ten stars it wouldn't be enough. Biscuits and gravy are amazing VA smoked sausage outstanding even the scrambled eggs were very tasty. I wanted to be able to write a better review because I really enjoyed our server. But the food was so bad there is nothing she could have done to improve my visit. I ordered a healthy selection of scrambled eggs on a chicken breast with grilled veggies. It came out cold and old, miserable to eat. I sent it back and a fresh one came out but the chicken breast was all grizzle, impossible to enjoy, basically fit for a dog quality. I ate the eggs and veggies only. When I mentioned it to a server (not the original one) she told me there had been food quality issues lately and many dishes were being returned. Our original server apologized, told me if she could cook it herself she would have. This restaurant is very popular and very busy so I doubt one review will have an impact. Hopefully someone in charge will read this and maybe make a change or two to improve the food quality read more

I received the worst steak I've ever have been served. I asked for medium rare steak and instead I got a well done one. I told them that and they brought out a undercooked steak. I took two bites and was unsatisfied. I got a box to take it home to feed my dog and on the way I saw a homeless gentleman because he had dog and he told me that he wouldn't even take it because it was undercooked. I threw it away and went home and forced my self to throw up because I didn't want to get food poisoning. I do not recommend this place to anyone who cares about their health. If I could give this place no stars, I would because even the sides were garbage. I really hope they did it on purpose because any chef who takes their job seriously should know what temperature to serve a steak at. Came to this restaurant on a Wednesday at 12:30. We both ordered eggs Benedict. My husband added a side of well done bacon. My eggs were cooked fine but the hollandaise sauce tasted and looked like it had gravy in it. It wasn't bad, just not what I expected. My husband did not get his bacon and had to ask for it. No one came by to see how the food was. One of my husband's eggs did not have the whites cooked all the way through. When he called the waitress over and showed her, she said what do you want me to do about it? He said to remove the bad one and replace it with a cooked egg. So a few minutes later she brings back his plate with the muffin and meat on it and said she wiped off the runny egg white. I am typing this review as we are waiting for the lone egg. It took 14 minutes to get that egg and of course the meat is cold. After the great reviews, this is NOT what we were expecting. We will never return here. It gets 1 star because you have to give it at least one. There are plenty of great breakfast places in va beach but this is not one of them. Update So spoke to the manager and she said the whole muffin, meat and egg should have been replaced, which made us feel better. Then she took that Benedict and bacon off the tab, which was not expected. Because of this manager we will likely give them another chance. I will leave it at one star until we return because the one star reflects our actual dining experience. read more

Mary's is my favorite breakfast place in Virginia Beach. I've been going there for about 20 years now ever since I first found it. Great breakfast, and you can't beat the prices. I can't find Creamed Chipped Beef (SOS) anywhere, anymore. But Mary's has it, and it's delicious as are their grits! Nice homey atmosphere with a friendly and fast wait staff. I had breakfast here this morning with a friend and i would say the service was terrible.It seems to me the people of color were not attended to in a timely manner. My friend and myself sat at the bar not acknowledged for a long while when a white man sat next to us his order was immediately even he had to comment we were there first and we should have been attended to. So when we received our food the potatoes were uncooked so im thinking my food got as much attention as we did... It still hurts to believe in this day and age that you have to still deal with this behavior at least i wont here anymore. read more

Ehhh. It's breakfast food. What else can you say about this place. Not a whole lot really. Feed as many people breakfast as you can during the AM hours is the persona that this place gives off. If you want a Bloody Mary or mimosa with your meal, this ain't the place either. They don't serve alcohol. Not the end of the world but something to make note of. As a visitor to the beach I was referred to Mary's as a good place for breakfast. I found the place to be decent. Built in the early 70s it's part of a small strip mall. Gourmet dining it's not. I would guess that almost all patrons were locals. I had eggs-sunny side up, grits, sausage patties and a large home made biscuit with real butter and coffee. Everything was cooked as well or better than I could have cooked it at home. The sausage patties were quite spicy, maybe too spicy for some. Grits were cooked just right. The others in my party had pancakes (plate sized) and bacon ordered crispy (it was) and scrambled eggs. They all said the pancakes were real good to excellent. The place appeared to be well maintained for it's age and reasonably clean. It was busy but the staff was attentive and friendly when they had a chance to talk for a minute or two. I find the two real negative reviews hard to believe and I'm not Mary's cousin or anything. lol Anyway there's enough business that they don't need fake reviews believe me. give it a try. read more

I'm surprised Mary's hasn't gotten better reviews. I got the biscuits with gravy, 2 eggs over medium and spiced apples. The biscuits were light and fluffy, the gravy was thick with chunks of sausage, the eggs were perfect - well done white with a still runny yolk- and the spiced apples were simply delicious. My daughter's chocolate chip pancakes tasted like yellow cake batter, thickly studded with chocolate chips. Yum! read more

this place is OK, we came here because the wait at Pocohantas was too long to wait. They had about a 10 minute wait here or no wait to sit at the counter. We sat at the counter and waited for several minutes before we were able to get our drink order in. I got a standard breakfast: two eggs, hash browns, bacon, and biscuit. the biscuit and bacon were the best part. I thought the potatoes could have been a little crispier, but decent otherwise. My moms omelette didn't come out with mine, the waitress forgot to put it in. My mom has a gluten allergy so she wanted to sub the toast for their apples, but apparently they wont make substitutes on menu items, so the waitress ended up bringing them out after my moms food finally came. Overall, the baked apples and the biscuit were the best part of the meal. The homemade cakes looked amazing though. Trying to check out took forever bc their highspeed wasnt working, so they were using dialup (which i didnt know still existed!) so we paid cash . read more

Decent breakfast. Good size portions and clean. Food was OK, I ordered the "local's" with French toast, sunny side up eyes, and sausage. I also got a waffle. The French toast was soggy and soft, the eggs were good not over cooked or over runny, one sausage patty was over cooked the other was ok, and the waffle was average. We spent 4 days in VA beach and this was without a doubt the best place we ate, hands down. The price is cheaper than the "fancy" places, but the food is twice as good. Even though the place was nearly empty, it took a few minutes for us to be greeted by a waitress, but once we had help we were very satisfied. My husband tried the chicken and waffles, which was good, while me and the little one (and eventually my husband, since he liked it better) split the chocolate chip waffle. Totally recommend! I was also impressed by the cleanliness of the bathroom and the baby changing table. Usually I LOVE this restaurant. We've had Kim & Joy help us and it's been great. However, yesterday we went and it took our server a good almost 10 min to get to our table. He said he had "a lot to do but he was sorry." Sooo... okay, that does happen. No worries. It was 11:10 and we both wanted the burgers that were clearly posted on the menu board. We were told that they were not serving lunch for another 45 min. Never has that happened before when I've gone to Mary's. And there was no wait to be seated. ??? Okay.... so, that happens. We decided to just have a drink and eat burgers elsewhere. The real issue was when I went to pay for our two mimosas. It was $16 at the beach where EVERY rest/bar has a happy hour! WHAT!!! Further, they were also the weakest mimosas to boot. So, if you're going to serve an $8 mimosa you at least need to put some champagne in it. Bad day all around for us. My girlfriend and I have been wanting to try Mary's for a while and finally made it in today. Unfortunately, we waited for 20 minutes at our table and were not helped. Several tables surrounding us, who came in after us, were helped before us. I asked a server behind the bar if she could send our server over and she said she'd be right with us. Instead, she came over and helped the table next to ours, looked at us, and left. We left without being helped and took our business down the street to Rick's Cafe, where we were served immediately. First time visitors to this place, lots of people there so we thought this was promising, the only thing good about the whole meal was the coffee, everything else was poor & disappointing. The sausages tasted like pre cooked synthetic junk, home fries were raw, cold with no flavor at all & the eggs were undercooked, the only thing edible was the toast. Wouldn't recommend this place to anyone, it maybe cheap but you get what you pay for, you will leave hungry & disappointed. What a shame for a restaurant that has been opened for 40 years. I was so delighted to take my brother out to breakfast this morning before he had school. He has never been to Mary's and I love to take him to local places here at the beach. He is still in school so we woke up extra earlier to get to your restaurant at 6. We were instantly greeted. She took our drink order and food order no later than 6:03. My first cup of coffee was not hot but somewhat warm, second cup was fine. Our food did not come out until 6:30, and I still had to wait for my other pancake! The grits were watery. My brother had to rush and leave early to catch the bus. Our server brought out extra eggs that were not cooked all the way. It was a nice jester but did not help. She also took 10 percent off. Over all I was not satisfied I had to wait to long for our food, I did not get to enjoy a nice breakfast with my brother (which was the whole point) , I had to listen to our waitress continuously explain what happened over and over which became annoying. i work at the oceanfront and have always pointed my customers to mary's because i heard good things! today, my wife and i decided to give it a try. we arrived at about 10am and it was busy busy busy. we were told to find a table as opposed to getting seated. we were able to receive our drinks (water) and we waited. and waited. after 15 minutes of waiting for a waitress and seeing other people walk in and get their waitresses immediately, we ended up walking out. we headed to rick's cafe and got our meal there. not too happy about mary's now and i will be sending my customers elsewhere. i also will not be coming back. i had high hopes though. read more

Went to this restaurant on advice of a local worker. Well enough said, dont take advice from locals. Restaurant was not appealing. Floor was dirty. When they wiped the tables they just pushed whatever was on table to the floor and then nobody cleaned up floor. Had an omelet with hash browns and a side of bacon. Omelet and hash browns were okay, bacon was petrified. I dropped a piece and it shattered. Wife had corn beef hash which was burnt, actually had black burn marks on pieces of it. Daughter had pancakes and eggs, not bad but pancakes were tough. This is a breakfast lunch establishment, and how hard is breakfast. Enough said, would not recommend this place. read more

Wow. All those people that wrote those great reviews about this place must be friends of the owner or something. BEWARE...Over rated for sure. I had the Mary's Feast, eggs over easy. You would equate feast with big right? No so, my meal looked anemic on my plastic plate. My eggs were over medium, the bacon and toast was what you can get at the super market. My friend had ordered the french toast. It was soggy and smushed. The sausage tasted like they were from the microwave. It was only 7:30am and it tasted like it was sitting under a hot lamp for hours. All of it was a laughable meal trying to pass as a restaurant entree. Breakfast is not hard to do and I'm not hard to please but I had to say something. Went here based on the great reviews of this place. DO NOT BE FOOLED, you are better off staying at home and cooking breakfast yourself. Go to Citrus, the reviews actually match the great food there. read more

My wife and I decide to walk 1.2 miles this morning to Mary's for breakfast. They have an "Up Early" special that we wanted to try (it's from 6:00-9:00). We arrived at 8:06 and the sign going in told us to seat ourselves, but the place was packed. We saw only one booth and a couple of tables available. We took the corner booth. I was a bit apprehensive about how busy they were, but we got our coffee and ordered our breakfast. They are serious about Customer Service. Everyone (including the young man who helped with coffee and busting tables) were very helpful and our coffee was never let go low (even when I really didn't want any more). Food was brought out in a reasonable time, especially considering how many people were there! The only slight downside to the food was that my wife is used to IHOP pancakes. Mary's were not quite up to that standard, but my hash browns were the best that I have had in recent memory. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this restaurant for breakfast! read more
