I've been coming here for decades. However, I gotta say something about this mornings visit. I pull in and there's one customer inside. That's it. I pull up to the speaker at 5:42am, at 5:45 I say hello? She responds with I'll be with you in a minute. 3 minutes later she takes my order. I order a Chourico, egg and cheese on an Asiago bagel well toasted and two Butter crunch donuts. 3 things I shouldn't be eating but anyway. I pull up. I'm at the window for a few minutes before one of the two come to the window and asked me again what my order was. I tell them again and they shut the window. 5 minutes later they give me the donuts. I look in the bag, both are Butter Crunch but ones chocolate and ones regular. She comes back to the window to take my money and I tell her that one is regular and one is chocolate to which she replied "Yeah but they are both Butter Crunch". Are you kidding me???? I told her that they were still two different donuts but I'll just take them. She looks at me like whatever and shut the window. 3-4 minutes later they give me the sandwich and I leave. Stayed at a hotel nearby this place and passed by it countless times before deciding to stop in one late morning. We stopped at about 11 AM on a Saturday. They both a standard parking lot and a drive through. At that time, there wasn't much of a line inside and there were seats available so we decided to stop in. As soon as you walk in, you get a local home town feel. There are many "regulars" but the hospitality doesn't stop there...every staff member was super friendly and patient to all the customers during my time there. I know that it isn't the easiest when considering you are taking an order for an entire family. They have a lot of options: donuts, croissants, breakfast sandwiches, lunch sandwiches and variety of drinks as well. We tried a few things. Everything seemed okay but just not great...the donuts we tried were pretty dry. I was expecting better for a place with such great reviews. There is a great check-in offer by the way. There is a nice coffee option as well. My hang up came when we went one night after dinner for a "donut dessert" and saw that the normal wide variety of donut selections was pretty slim. Just had to update my review. Ma's has become my FAVORITE coffee shop on the island. The way they handled Covid regulations is also impressive. Today I went through the drive through and their speaker system was broken so they used an 2 employees phone to face time the customers in line. I was impressed at the solution to the problem and I honestly loved seeing the inside of the store and seeing the faces of the employees as they asked for my order. Every time I visit Newport, I stop in Ma's for my morning coffee! It is a quick 6 minute trip from downtown Newport and the coffee is spot on every time! I called Easter morning to ask if they were open and the sweetest man answered and was very polite and friendly. The drive thru moves quickly and the cashier remembered my order (from going everyday this past weekend) and asked if my coffee was dark enough - so sweet even with a never ending line! The donut's are great, nice and soft. I got a boston cream. The frosting is the perfect amount and the filling was the right amount of sweetness. The coffee bun glazed with chocolate is dense and rich. The honey glazed jelly donut has tons of jelly inside. Their coffee beans are roasted fresh. I don't even drink ice coffee and I literally died drinking their ice coffee! The medium is like a large. Very gracious on the size portions. The staff is very friendly. Open 24/7 even during covid. Went through the drive thru which was annoying because the donut options are not on the menu so I was randomly ordering donut types I had seen people mention on yelp(most were sold out at 5pm on a Saturday). I ended up with a churro donut and a cookies and cream donut. I also got a bacon egg and cheese roll and a sausage egg and cheese roll which came out warm. Next time I'll ask for the churro donut to be warm because it was actually cold, almost as if it had been refrigerated.. however it was still good. The breakfast sandwich stuffed rolls were a hit! They were huge and I only ate half of mine and saved the rest for later. I ordered a small mocha iced coffee which I'm not sure if it was because of how much choc and sugar were in it, but it was amazing and I wished I had ordered a bigger one. I recommend if your planning on ordering donuts that you look at the menu online before coming and don't just depend on the drive thru because the donuts aren't listed there! If you'd like a local, down to earth, donut shop, come here. The staff is friendly and so understanding. My husband and I ordered 2 breakfast rolls, donut holes, and a couple of other pastries. We ordered the "Ma's" donut holes. Goodness they're good. They're more of your old fashioned kind of donut with a cinnamon glaze. They're soft and oh so delicious. One thing we hadn't had before were the breakfast rolls so we didn't really know what to expect. The woman working heated then up for us and when we took a bite, soft, delectable bread was surrounding the most tender egg and sausage combo. It. Is. Delicious. Not too hot either. Neither of us burnt our mouths! I'm so sad that we've lived here for a year and are just now getting around to Ma's. I absolutely love this coffee place! I crave it all year long. I come out here at least once a year for vacation and every day I'm here I have to have my coconut mocha iced coffee. it's so creamy and amazing!!! wish they had one near my home in Mass. It has all of the feel of a family Christmas during Christmas time. They make homemade cookies, pies and more. I absolutely love the chicken salad grinder they make. Overcharging. I really dislike when business list prices and then charge a completely different/higher price than what is being advertised. It's really unfair to the consumers. When I pointed out to the cashier tonight that she charged me more than the price listed above on the menu she gave me an elaborate excuse that prices have increased but they did not change the menu posted in the store! It is so unacceptable to blindside a customer with a higher price then what we are told/shown. When a man meets the muffin of his dreams...it has to be kismet. Yah, I know it's a donut shop but even in it's name, there's so much more to it! I arrived in Newport recently at 3am and the only thing that was open was McDonald's, 7-11, and Ma's. I was hesitant on stopping in because I wanted actual food and not a donut but when I saw the menu and discovered that I could have chourico and pepper sandwich at 3am, it was destiny! Then as I was checking out I saw in the corner of my eye a beautiful bright green pastry and underneath it said "pistachio muffin". I love pistachio ice cream, pistachio cake, pistachios by itself but I've never had it in muffin form so naturally I took one with me and when I got back to my room, it was the first thing I bit into. Bliss just absolute bliss! I felt bad for my sandwich because even as I was eating it all I could think about was that first bite of my muffin. So I quickly consumed the tasty sandwich but immediately went back to my muffin. I love me some donuts, so there is probably no surer bet than if there is an old locally owned donut shop in town, I will be visiting it. We got some for dessert, and then got another half dozen later to take home to Albany. They had a very nice variety of donuts. I only wish I could've tried them all. I didn't even get to try the "and more!" That said, here are the winners: Blueberry cake. I'm a defender of Dunkin's blueberry cake, but this was much better. Dense, spiced cake with big flecks of blueberry-flavored non-blueberry bits. We had a few of these. Ma's Donut: I think this might be a sour cream. It's darker and glazed, so it has a good crunch and flavor. Apple fritter: YES. Real pieces of apple. Crunchy fried exterior. Butternut: I don't go do Dunkin very often anymore, but it's been a while since I've seen a butternut. This was great. They might have even had a chocolate butternut. Chocolate glazed: This is probably about as good as chocolate glazed donut will get. I just think it's a flavor that doesn't lend itself well to donuts, but this was good. Yeah, I could easily eat myself sick here. The price point was about what I'd expect from Dunkin' Donuts, maybe a bit cheaper. And big bonus points for being open 24 hours.
