I was looking for a good coffee shop on my trip to Rhode Island and stumbled across Custom House on my way to check in to my hotel. The baristas were so friendly and knowledgeable. On our first trip we got the iced honey bee and iced matcha. The honey bee was delightful and sweet but not too sweet. While the matcha was probably some of the best matcha I've had. We came back the next day and ordered 3 of the matchas. It is veteran owned and they offer military discount. I'm a little sad there isn't a location close to me because it would easily be my to go coffee shop. read more

This place was a great find!! Was visiting the area and stopped in to get hubby a coffee but found an interesting tea drink for myself which was a delicious surprise!! I had an iced coconut berry chai that was so surprisingly good that I came back 2 days later to get another for the drive home! Servers were friendly and helpful. And the coffee was quite good. I love Custom House! Stopped in on a Sunday morning around 830 and wasn't too busy yet, got the Zombie Killer which is so so good. They always have yummy pastries too but I opted out this morning. They have some tables and couches in the back for seating if you wanted to hang out for a bit. Around 9 I feel like they usually start to get a steady line but they are pretty quick with service so they keep it moving. Would suggest if you're in the area and don't want to spend $12 on a coffee read more

Popular place, and for good reason. The line was out the door, but it moves quickly. All lattes come with 2 shots of espresso, so you can order a S, M, or L depending on how milky you like it, which I think is a great idea. The iced pistachio latte half sweet was perfect. Not too strong of a coffee flavor in the large size, so I would opt for medium next time but would definitely return if I'm in the area. read more

The food, coffee and ambience were merely acceptable. The line was long. They forgot to make our food so we waited for 25 minutes and then they has tried to cover it up when I asked why it took so long. And they didn't warm my danish. But it was pretty good coffee. If you are looking for delicious beverages and quality service, you need to stop by Custom! We were so happy to have a coffee shop right by our Airbnb. The ladies working were so sweet and even offered a replacement drink if I did not like my first order. Love that they were dedicated to making sure their customers enjoyed their drinks! Great ambience, coffee and food - was headed for a 5 star review until 2 things turned the tide: 1. I ordered a piece of coffee cake and the gal that prepared them (not the cashier) reached over 6-8 pieces of coffee cake to secure the clearly smallest piece in the display - I don't care much - except that it took effort to pass the first 2 rows and it felt and looked intentional 2. We had just paid nearly $25 for 2 hot drinks and a bakery item and my wife asked for a cup of hot water. The cashier said no problem, didn't mention it would cost, handed the small cup of hot water to my wife and then charged us $2. If we had been told it was $2 we may have made another decision - but felt ambushed. The coffee is good. The service is passable and the $2 hot water turned a 4-5 star review into something less. Stopped here on our way home from Newport and happy we did. Crowded even on a cold January morning, but the line moved quickly and we found a table. Lots of pastries and other items, but couldn't resist the crumb cake. Got an iced coffee and a Honey Bee and both were delicious. Staff was very friendly and everything came out quickly. Small touches-selection of liquid sugars (agave, simple, honey) and loved the decor including the vintage coffee cans (brought back memories of my grandmother and her cup of Maxwell House or Chock Full O'Nuts.) As the sign says outside, "Don't panic" if there is a line, it goes fast. Very cool vibe inside. Love the way it is decorated. The servers work quick to get out your coffee and whatever edibles you order. Small areas to sit inside, but plenty of outside seating if it's nice. read more

Super cute little coffee shop in Portsmouth, definitely saw a lot of locals who had branded cups! They have a lot of fun, coffee flavor options, as well as some creative specialty drinks. Service was really quick and even the line was out the door when we got there and moved very fast. I was feeling a little bit under the weather when I came here and I had a request for a tea with some lemonade, which is probably not a common request that they got, and they were super accommodating and friendly and didn't make me feel weird for asking! This is easily the best coffee spot in Middletown. They offer a variety of coffee products, baked goods, and sandwiches in a cozy atmosphere that caters to people from all walks of Middletown life. If I have one complaint, it's that they aren't open longer hours. I'd love to be able to stop in in the evening for a treat and a decaf, as nowhere else offers this kind of atmosphere in Middletown. read more

Stopped in for a morning coffee. The interior was cool with everything coffee related. They had their own roaster and a bunch of different coffee beans for sale. Ordered their zombie killer which was undiluted cold brew with caramel and vanilla flavors and then topped with milk. This may have been some of the strongest cold brew I've even had! Dirty chai latte, absolutely THE BEST. GO TO THIS COFFEE SHOP IF YOU WANT A REAL COFFEE IN NEWPORT! Coffee is rich, they roast the beans right there, it's not diluted with water, and it doesn't sit in all day. The coffee is hot, fresh, made to order, baristas know what they're doing. The smell of the coffee is amazing! They have some cool special drinks I've never seen before such as a "naughty chai latte," which actually has cold brew instead of coffee. Pretty nice coffee shop in Middletown! The first time I went here the service was really rude and weird. The second time I had a much better experience. They serve Knead products which I love. At the recommendation of Ragged Island Brewery, I had to check out Custom House Coffee. What a nice coffee shop! During this pandemic, they are offering curbside contactless pickup for food, coffee, or beans. I opted for the Custom House blend. The bold aroma is enough to grab you and wake you up on its own, but the flavor is just as impressive. They have a wide variety of freshly roasted beans, so there is sure to be something for everyone. After following this coffee shop I am impressed with the tasty looking breakfast sandwiches that they turn out. Much more appealing than the blah chain shop down the road. Wow, I love this place: from the discounts for veterans, to the numerous coffee beans available for purchase in whole bean or ground form, to the baked goods made just around the corner, to the great decor - old coffee cans lining the room and fun vintage & vintage-like signs - to the cozy seating & free WiFi, to the KICKASS iced coffee. Meet the Business Owner: Bob M.

As a lifelong coffee lover, Bob's goal from the beginning was to serve the best, freshest coffee possible in a pleasant, friendly environment. He began his research by roasting coffee beans at home on a small home roaster. He was so impressed with the superior flavor of fresh-roasted beans that he decided he had to have a roasting operation in his new store. Bob got his formal roaster training from Steve Diedrich, the owner and founder of Diedrich Manufacturing, where Custom House Coffee's state-of-the-art roasters were manufactured. Bob continues to serve as chief roastmaster, roasting several varietals of beans nearly every day on our two roasters.

I made my selection and brought it to the counter to purchase. They also serve coffee and pastry but this trip I just wanted the beans. They offered to grind them to whatever courseness I wanted, but I prefer to grind them at home. A pound of coffee averages $20 and they have a frequent buyer program (when you reach purchases of $100, you get a $5 credit. This is tracked so your purchases accumulate). They also deliver to the area on Wednesday's if you order online by their Tuesday Night deadline. I have tried this and my coffee was on my doorstep before 9 that Wednesday. Very convenient. Lastly, the store is not that big with not much room for sitting (I honestly can't remember if they had seating.) However, if you are looking to source your beans or grab a cup of coffee on the go, this is a great option.

In the back was a counter you could order food at, and in the middle were table and chairs. They have sampling cups to taste the vinegars and oils. They really encouraged us to keep sampling, which was great because I feel awkward sampling too much. No shame here! We tried some very tasty balsamic vinegars. My favorite was the ume, or Japanese plum. It was very sweet! The oils were good, too, but I only sampled a couple because sampling oil without bread felt weird. We left with a few bottles at balsamic and a bottle of olive oil. They sell different sized bottles, too, and they bottle it right in front of you. One of the standouts we got was blueberry, it has an amazing blueberry taste! Definitely check this place out if you need some fun balsamic in your life- we all do!

Custom House Coffee in Middletown, RI, is my favorite local coffee shop. They roast the coffee beans right on the premises, so you know that the coffee is fresh. I've been going here for years. My husband and I use Custom House Coffee beans at home, so we go there at least once a month, sometimes more. If you're a local and you haven't tried Custom House yet, you should. If you're just passing through and you're sick of the big coffee chains, I definitely recommend that you stop by Custom House Coffee. You won't regret it! read more

Hands down the best coffee shop on the island! They have great coffee and reasonably priced breakfast sandwiches that they heat up fresh on the spot. Bonus, they are strong supporters of our military and veterans. If you are going to give someone your money they are the most worthy! read more

Espresso (straight + mini cortado) The straight was under-extracted, resulting in a noticeable sourness and lack of balance. Not undrinkable, but it lacked the smoothness and depth you'd hope for. The cortado, however, improved the experience--the milk helped round out the acidity and made it far more approachable. Espresso Tonic: This ended up being the standout. It's definitely an acquired taste, but if you enjoy bright, citrus-forward drinks, this works. The subtle sweetness and orange notes complemented the espresso nicely, creating something refreshing and unique--perfect for warmer weather. Reminds me of a Matcha Milkis but with espresso instead. Iced Caramel Latte: A bit too milk-heavy for my preference. The espresso got lost, and while there were faint crème brûlée-like notes and a touch of caramel, the overall profile felt muted and underwhelming. Service: Excellent. One of the drinks was initially forgotten which resulted in me waiting several minutes, but the staff handled it well--quick apology and a complimentary drink chip. That level of accountability goes a long way and stands out compared to many other shops. Ambiance: Relaxed and inviting. The space has a fun, casual vibe with merchandise ranging from hoodies to cards, giving it some personality beyond just being a coffee stop. Overall: There's a strong foundation here.
