Ordered octopus sushi, and it was rotten! I spit it back out of my mouth as soon as I tasted the formaldehyde, it was disgusting, and I can't believe I even ate the rest of my food. The fish is definitely not fresh, and it also took a while to get my food. The food here is excellent. We were ordering takeout about twice per week for picnic lunches with my family. We've been in the restaurant a handful of times. Normally, service is pretty good. Prior to my most recent visit, this was 5-stars. The reason I've lowered to three stars is because there is a younger man who seems very harsh and hostile with coworkers, and we recently had a poor experience with him which has turned this away from this restaurant. Basically, we are two adults and three children, one of which is an infant in a car seat. There was a table for six that was available, but the young man guided us to a smaller four-top towards the back of the restaurant. I asked if it was possible to sit at the six-top, but he refused saying that it was only for six people. it was too cramped for my family, so we dined next-door. After we finished, we walk by the restaurant to sit at the table was still open. I mentioned to the young man, that would've been better for us and for the restaurant if he had let us sit there earlier. He looked away and mumbled something about "the rules." Seemed arrogant, unaccommodating, and hostile enough that we won't return anymore. Maybe he's related to the owner, or management. If management is reading this, we spend $250/week at least, and give $25 in tip for takeout. Maybe not much, but it was consistent. What can I say. Four of us went for dinner here last night. We ordered Toro sushi... they were out, we ordered Blue Fin Tuna... they were out, servers more items on the menu, they were out of. I guess they need to go fishing tomorrow? Two of us ordered their Sushi dinner combo which included Miso soup and salad. My soup came, which was good but my sushi never materialized. The other one did though...! When I asked after 10 minutes, the sushi chef said mine was coming in a few minutes from the kitchen...??? After another 15 minutes, the waitress went to check her P.O.S. computer to see if she had placed it... she did, but it never was made. She then offered to have it made, but by then everyone else had eaten. She then asked me if I'd like a bowl of complimentary ice cream... no thanks. Check please! At least I wasn't charged. We went to dinner here last night. Very poor unfriendly service. Our waiter was a tall skinny guy who had no interest in what we wanted or how we liked the food. I ordered the dinner special combo with teriyaki chicken, sushi and California rolls. My food arrived lukewarm. The chicken was cheap fatty dark meat and didn't taste fresh. The sushi fell apart and tasted like clay. My wife ordered chicken to jokisoba and asked for very little oil. Her food arrived soaking in oil. Expensive prices for horrible food and service. We had Sushi tonight from Masa Sushi it's usually good but this time it was a mess. The Philadelphia cut roll came as a hand roll asked for no sesame seeds because of gout but they were generous with the pouring on of sesame seeds. Eel roll was loosely rolled and uneven so it fell apart ate it with a fork. My fiancé had two hand rolls on soy paper with more rice then filling when she went to eat it the filling fell out and to top it off I'm including a picture of my hand roll container with the bonus two black hairs I found. I wish I could give a 0 star. This place is absolutely disgusting. My friend and I came over to celebrate my 26th birthday. First let's start off saying I was outside and it didn't look that appetizing. For example, it's empty with only 4 peoples. I order a sake the waitress said they can't offer me alcohol. I'm like really that's weird why I'm 26 and it's on the menu. Then I'm like ok forget it get me a coke. So we order the sushi I ask for the popcorn lobster roll. My friend ask for the ocean roll. My sushi tasted cold and his sushi tasted weird according to him. So he ask for his money but they said no they could give him another roll but we are like we don't want to eat here anymore. We had a terrible sushi experience and the person that wouldn't give me sake said that she will call the police. I'm like wait why are you gonna call the police we said that the sushi tasted weird. But we end switching orders and the second plate tasted a little bit better. Well anyway my friend ends up in the emergency room and having trouble breathing and wants to throw up and I ended up vomiting. I asked multiple people around that ate over there and they all say the same thing they had bad experiences and the people working there is extremely rude. It turns out that we both ended up getting food poisoning. And the more I'm reading more and more people were having the same experience. Sushi 4/9/2008 One thing I hate about sushi, is that you got to be rolling in dough to get your stomach full. Granted, if you're a hardcore sushi purist, you'd probably stick to nigiri or sashimi, and you'll also probably get yourself full from the rice. But not me. I'm fat. Rice doesn't faze me. In fact, rice is expected to be on my plate, at all times. With that said, the Masa experience should be limited to eating at the Sushi Bar, paying with your own tab, and ordering from the sushi or rolls menu. Besides the price, Masa Sushi is delicious. Their rice isn't hard and their fish have a wonderful texture which result in a melt in your mouth experience. Aside from their standard 2 piece sushi orders, Masa is creative enough to offer over 80 rolls in his menu (many of which are cooked). #56. The Beach Ball is a ball of rice with crab meat, yellowtail, and jalapeno filled in it's cavity. The ball is then battered in tempura, deep fried to obtain the perfect crispness, and finally drizzled with their wonderfully sweet teriyaki sauce. Additional Notes: I'm a big fan of Low Sodium Soy Sauce on sushi/rolls, it compliments them so much better, as the flavor is much more subtle. Regular soy sauce is best on everything else. I'd give this: a 15/20. It is one of the few Japanese owned sushi bars in the area. However, if price were a factor, Masa would be brought down a few points. Right after Masa Sushi, me, Wilmar D., and co. decided to pick up a few things at the Taco Bell next door. You know, a Nacho Cheese Chalupa, a Beefy Cheesy Melt, and a Caramel Empanada. So, after their rough start, our family decided to give the new, non-Masa-owners another try. The portions have gotten bigger, but not better. The sushi rice is too sweet - the defining characteristic of a non-Japanese sushi joint. The crab mixture that's a staple of many rolls is too sweet. The old recipes are changed: The mussel hand roll has no more butter. The Hot & Cold Tuna is cubed, too large for a poke effect, and not seared, just tanned. A $60 meal that was wholly unsatisfying. The Lumbar roll was bigger, but not better than it used to be. The waitresses want to stay busy, and hover over you every few minutes. The high ratings are from the old Masa reviews. I live nearby and have considered trying it on multiple occasions but read a few of the negative reviews and ended up choosing a different restaurant each time. I was really craving sushi and finally have it a shot, and I am glad I did! I ordered some food to go and actually had a great experience. The man who took my order was really nice and helped answer any questions I had. They had my food ready quickly and made sure I had chopsticks and utensils plus any other sauces/extras I asked for. I really liked everything that I ordered! I got a couple salmon and avocado hand rolls and they were great. I also ordered yellowtail and tuna sushi and the seaweed salad. Sushi is quite good; we don't normally order anything else but sushi. Seafood is fresh, and prices are reasonable. The atmosphere is loud due to the cramped space. It's generally always crowded when we've been here. Not a great place to go with kids. Our children LOVE sushi but the wait is TERRIBLE. We have had very inconsistent service in the way of friendliness. Haven't seen the same server twice in a long time; turnover seems high lately. In this visit alone, we have had to get up and ask for additional place settings, even when they said they'd bring it. Also had to ask for sushi plates when the server tried to put whole rolls in front of specific individuals. Firstly, I'd like to mention how much of a great deal their lunch special is! They are available from Monday- Friday (11:00-3:30). They have a customizable bento box: the two item combination is $10.99 and the three item combo is $12.99. There are a great amount of options to choose from (chick cutlet to even sashimi) and you get more bang with your buck with their portion size! One item on their menu that is unique from different restaurants are the tataki bowls. The tataki bowls consist of raw fish, green onions, avocado, and ponzu sauce. You can even add jalepenos to add a kick! I personally love getting the salmon tataki and I always pair it with miso soup and a bowl of rice. Kanpachi (amberjack) is another item on their menu that I haven't found in many other sushi joints. It is a type of fish that is from the yellowtail family. You can get it served as sushi or sashimi. The sushi chefs add hawaiian sea salt and lemon and prefer you eat without soy sauce. Eating it as-is is a good call because you can truly experience the fresh and unique taste. As far as rolls go, my personal favorites are: Philly, S.O.B. (hand), Bart Simpson, Mel San, Y2K, Ventura, Bryan San, and Masa's 3 Putt. Oh and if you're not so much into fish and you love noodles, I recommend their beef yakisoba! My last honorable mention is their cajun tuna crunch onion sashimi! Oh my god. It is a must-try! I am not going to go into detail about it. It is definitely something you have to try for yourself! If you're not much into tuna, there is an albacore option as well! (It is just as delicious!) As a Japanese cuisine enthusiast, I have tried many Japanese restaurants in Ventura county. Masa Sushi definitely has the most selection and variety. I didn't expect great sushi in Camarillo, but Masa Sushi is truly great sushi. They have a pretty expansive menu, but the two things I chose, I was more than happy with. I got the SOB hand roll, which has tuna, avocado, jalapeños, crab, smelt eggs, and a quail egg; and the cucumber roll, which doesn't have rice and has tuna, salmon, avocado, and crab, and is topped with smelt eggs. I love that they have the option to sub real crab for imitation crab and brown rice for white rice; I subbed in real crab for both, though they were out of real crab by the time they got to my SOB hand roll, so they subbed in spicy tuna instead (which I strongly recommend - it was amazing). The hand roll was perfect; the quail egg was really interesting. It was the perfect ratio of fish to rice, and I loved the spicy crunch of the jalapeño. The cucumber roll was just as good, if not better; it's one of the best riceless rolls I've had. The fish was all fresh and flavorful, and there was light soy sauce I believe drizzled on it (if you're gluten free or strictly I'd ask for no sauce). It was really filling without being heavy, because there was no rice. The only caveat is that the food took a really long time to come, but we didn't mind since we had time and had a good conversation going. The service was fantastic; they kept our waters full and were very attentive. They also gave us free tofu appetizers, which I didn't have any of, but it was a nice touch. Overall, I'm glad I don't have to go to Ventura or Oxnard for good sushi anymore; this little family restaurant is definitely a must try and definitely the best sushi you'll find in Camarillo. read more
