The food and service is so-so. The quality of the salmon is more of a 4 star, but everything else needs improvement. The Crunch Roll was a mess and definitely do not order La Bamba Roll. Mikuni Sushi (Sacramento area) has a salsa roll that is amazing, so I decided to get La Bamba but it was a huge mistake. It wasn't craftfully put together. It was more of a tuna roll with cheap salsa poured on top. The salmon and avocado roll and salmon sushi are decent. If you eat here, order salmon. But there are better places for sushi in Ventura County. read more

I hope this place is still open after the pandemic is over! Personally, I always get the baked/tempura specialty rolls, so I can only sing high praises for them. You can order from them at the door (they keep it clean and safe) and they have this glass screen, so you don't have to go inside to order. After ordering, they even give you a small alcohol wipe to wipe your hands with. The order comes with the sauces on the side (so it won't be drenched/soggy) and they give you a generous amount of ginger/wasabi + the little raddish stuff they have on the side. Lunch specials (Monday to Friday, 11 to 3, I believe) were worth the price. I tried the chirashi ($13.99) I think cause I'm more into sashimi. Not bad, super filling, although I've been to places that served more fish in their chirashi... perhaps I'll stick with the lunch specials and try out the rolls next time. Hmmm where to begin? I suppose I'll start off with what i liked the best--Hako sushi. I've been to many sushi joints, but I have yet to see anything particularly as interesting as what I've seen here. This Hako "roll" or whatever u wanna call it, is actually made in a box and piled on with salmon, tuna, and eel sauce (there might be even more fish, but this is all that i could recall). The outcome of this interesting take on sushi construction is long strips of sushi instead of a typical bite size. I absolutely loved it and will for sure return just for more of that hako delishness. Secondly, I loved that the food is prepared fresh as could be tasted in the refreshing aroma of the fish in your mouth. Freshwater eel and Saba were my particular favorites since the former was still warm when i had it and the latter was perfect in its flavor (a bit salty and tangy from its delicate preparation in vinegar and possibly some salt). Thirdly, I loved that the owner is very welcoming to his customers. Although it was raining hard today, the place was still packed and there were about 4 or 5 people still waiting to be seated when we left. That goes to show how well Masa develops his food-fan base, i suppose. read more

It had been awhile since I was last at Masa but not much has changed other than the crazy fun Mr. Masa was not there outing and taking shots. His presence is missed Ashe created such a fun environment and eating experience. As for the food... It is very well priced and they offer a wide variety. Outside of a selection of sushi they offer chicken, soups and salads. I like the menu is categorized by simple, fresh, baked and tempura rolls. The simple rolls are nice and aren't over packed with rice. I love the Montgomery hand roll along with the Monkey balls. Probably best monkey balls in town The Vegas roll is delicious but really large and hard to eat. That's the kind of roll you want to taste all the flavors together which is nearly impossible when the roll is as fat as my face. Along with it doesn't stay together. Which I actually found with all the rolls, they didn't stay together and I eat and use chopsticks often never really having an issue. Here I had issues... Maybe it wasn't or maybe it was the rice and roll either way. Hard to eat when it falls apart in the sticks. Overall I though it was delicious. Service was great. They checked on us and refilled our waters often. Unfortunately some of the plates had chips on the edges which is unappealing. It's the attention to details... All in all I will be back and won't let it be a year in between this time. read more

This place sucks. I've eaten here once and thought it was slightly above mediocre, so I went for a second time due to lack of options. However, after waiting for 30 minutes, I never got my order (takeout). Maybe it's my fault for not wanting to seem pushy, but the guy who took my order acted like he had no idea I was waiting when I asked where my food was. Literally ordered and sat in clear view, so at least you would think employees might wonder what I was doing sitting around, but naw. Their rice was gluey and EVERYTHING has avocado. I liked the vibe right away; upon entering we were warmly greeted and immediately seated. We received a small complimentary tofu and almond appetizer which was unexpected and delicious! There is a great and large selection of all kinds of sushi here. We ordered a beef teriyaki "simple roll" and a fantasy "special roll" (basically a rainbow roll with shrimp tempura inside as well). The verdict on the beef teriyaki roll: it was an interesting twist on a sushi roll and a particularly good option for people who aren't the biggest traditional sushi fans. The teriyaki sauce was well made and we appreciated that the sushi wasn't drowning in it. The verdict on the fantasy roll: it was an awesome, yet minimal change for someone who usually just enjoys a traditional rainbow roll. As stated above, the only difference was the shrimp tempura included inside the roll itself, but it does make a noticeable addition to he overall flavor of the roll. In summary, we will likely return if we are in the area and craving sushi! Decent prices, good food, and good people. read more

Horrible service. Won't go back. Won't recommend. Went to Masa with my wife and daughter at the recommendation of a family member who went years ago. We went on Sunday evening and there was only two other customers in the restaurant. Our waitress (didn't get her name) brought out appetizers and after we thanked her ignored us. Next we ordered drinks and she was unfriendly again. A few minutes later she asked if we were ready to order and we asked for a few more minutes. She didn't reply but did turn around and roll her eyes which my wife saw. We asked for the owner, I explained what happened and that we wouldn't be back, and we left. The owner looked lost. She appeared very apathetic. We are extremely easy going. As a small business owner I understand stuff happens and people have bad days. We packed it up and went to Sushi Planet less than five minutes away were the service and food were Awesome! First time there but we will definitely be back to Sushi Planet! Mom lives in Camarillo so we've been more than a few times over the years. There are some other fun sushi places around Camarillo, but the chef and his crew here..... another level everytime we've been. I always buy him an Asahi or Saporro (back in S.F. now and forgot which they serve). Sashimi is the real test and their offerings are pristine. They even offer an amuse buche (complimentary appetiser). Typically a Japanese restaurant might give you a little edamame, nuts, or noodles. Customer service was very welcoming when we walked in! However, I would say that the rolls are......eh. They're decent, but there's lots of repetition of ingredients. 50% of the rolls on the menu are basically a Caifornia roll with something thrown on top. It's just bland. To be completely honest, It isn't the best place to go get sushi, but it isn't the worst either. This place has been great every time we have came here. They give you an amazing tempura tofu appetizer for free which my son liked so much we order by itself sometimes. My 3 year old son likes it so much he ate a full roll and asked for more! My favorite is this Cajun tuna sashimi with spinach and mushrooms and fried onions truly amazing.
