I had a few things to take care of in the area so I stopped by Masala for lunch. Seems everyone from the area loves this restaurant but I wasn't impressed very much. The lunch buffet is relatively small and besides the tikka masala nothing else has much of a taste. The naan is very fluffy as others have noted and tastes quite good and the rice pudding isn't bad either. Other than these, however, I don't think this place is worth visiting if you are looking for flavorful Indian food -BUT if you are in the area, are hungry and don't want to pay much for lunch, then Masala could be a good choice as it's impossible to beat the $7.95 lunch buffet deal. read more

This place is awesome. Best Indian food I've had. Shared the combination with my daughter. Started with chicken soup, seasoned perfectly. Next came the naan: fresh, "fluffy" best ever. Next was lamb josh rogan (very nice), chicken tikka, and chicken/sausage with onions and peppers on a hot stone. Very fresh testing, hint of spice, just right. Kheer for dessert. I have found Masala to be an experience that I look forward to taking part in, rather than being simply a restaurant to eat at. From the time you walk in you to the time you leave, everything fits together perfectly where I cannot help but walk away not simply full, but in a better mood. This last time that I was there I brought family from out of town because I knew that they would enjoy it and the large size portion would enable people to share and try different items. I enjoy starting the meal with one of their imported beers from India, my favorite being the Taj Mahal, and samplers like the veggie pakoras, and samosas. My first several times I always ordered the Chicken Mushroom which is described as "diced chicken in an aromatic and delightful fenugreek sauce superbly blended with mushrooms" and I was never disappointed and did not think that it could get better than that. During a return visit though I saw the Lamb Pasand which is "Cubes of lamb cooked in a mildly spiced creamy sauce topped with sliced almonds" and I now get it every time and recommend it to everyone. The lamb is always cooked perfectly with it being fall apart tender and the flavor of the mild sauce complements the lamb by not covering up the wonderfully subtle gamey flavor. My wife swears by the Chicken Tikka and gets it with a Mango Lassi ("a refreshing yogurt shake") every time, and I do not think anything will change that. Hopefully it goes without saying, but you MUST get the garlic Naan. I have never had a bad experience here, and the workers are always very friendly and even play with my 15 month old son as they walk by. This is my favorite Indian place so far. My boyfriend was visiting from Nashville, and it's almost become tradition for us to go to a couple of the Indian places when I visit him, so we decided to seek out one here. We ordered carryout so u can comment on a dining experience, but I will say that the staff was very friendly when we picked up our food. We both ordered the Tikka Masala, garlic naan, and a mango lassi each. I ordered the medium, while he ordered the Indian hot. When we for home and started eating? We both decided that THIS was our favorite Indian place even over our current two favorite Nashville places. The flavor was just so good, and it was honestly the best naan bread is ever had. As far as the spice levels, I'm honestly not one that could accurately review those. I will say that the medium at this place was spicier than the previous place I had eaten, and was the perfect amount of spice for me. The Indian hot was just too hot for me. But my boyfriend enjoyed it so much. Though he admitted that he'd probably just go for the hot next time rather than the Indian hot. Being from India and that too from north, I can gurantee that this is the most authentic indian restaurant in Lexington. We ordered palak.paneer and matar paneer with plain naan. The naans had that smoky flavor that we have when prepared in earthen ovens (the authentic way to prepare naaans). The dishes were well prepared and I am giving 4 star for the preparation and tazte and one extra for the fact that they were closing but still treated us well. read more

We visit this restaurant about once or twice a month. Overall, the food is very good, but there are some other items that need improvement: 1. The chandeliers are absolutely FILTHY! and need to be cleaned. 2. The walls next to the booths also don't look like they've been wiped down in quite some time. 3. The interior decor is extremely tired and dirty looking and needs to be cleaned/updated. I plan on going back to the restaurant again sometime in the next week or two, and if I don't see any improvement, we're going to be looking for a new restaurant. Love the food but I will definitely be finding another Indian restaurant to go to I posted a comment a couple weeks ago after going to Masalas to eat the buffet there were two people working a lady and a younger guy. The guy brought my drink to the table and the smell of foul underarms about made me sick to my stomach so I posted a comment on Google in hopes someone in management there would see it and correct the problem. I returned there on wednesday June 19th and there were two guys working an older one and the same younger guy as my last visit, again the same guy brought my self and my friend our drinks and again the smell from his underarms were unbearable. My friend agreed so we both flagged down the older waiter for refills. I guess my next option is to notify the health department maybe they can enforce hygiene at Masalas. Great! The lunch buffet was actually very good and everything was well stocked. I went on a whim and was just passing through. I WILL be back. The meats were cooked just right and the breads, dips, oils, etc were all very authentic. The candied carrots and raisins were spiced perfectly. I had some Korma and it was to die for. The service was outstanding besides the lack of english. Strip mall food is growing on me. =) It's located in a really nice neighborhood as well with convenience to many things. Great service! I had a huge take out order that I out in last minute, and they even gave me a free mango lassi when I was waiting for the food. They also packed everything nicely. The only thing is that the chicken jalfrezi was a little too spicy and the naan didn't taste as fresh. My Indian friends really likes theirs so it probably is very authentic Indian food. read more

I ate at Masala for 2 of the 4 meals I had while visiting the area. For the first meal, I ordered carryout. I started with the cucumber/tomato/onion salad and had Lamb Rogan Josh for dinner. The salad wasn't great, the chunks of onion were very large and as a result, a bit overpowering. Plus, the tomatoes were tasteless. The entree was quite good. The lamb was tender and the sauce had a great flavor. On day 2 I tried the lunch buffet. For $9 it was pretty darn good, the chicken dishes were the best. I used to love this place but will probably never be back.. I took a date out to dinner here and receieved the worst service in recent memory. It had been a couple years since my last visit and and the experiences were like night and day- it was as if we weren't welcome there despite having one other table in the whole place. I came here with my family, a group of five people. Everyone loved what they ordered, and since we are a family that always tries what the others order, I can honestly say that everyone loved what everyone ordered. Delicious naan, samosas, and five entrees. No one left hungry, and two folks had full takeaway boxes. The waitress was amazingly attentive, sweet, and friendly. She played an Indian version of Happy Birthday over the loudspeaker when she heard it was my birthday. I was a regular patron of Beaumont Masala for 5 or 6 years and I regret to say that there has been a steady decline in quality. Granted, it isn't a bad place to eat; I just feel like the Yelp rating is not reflective of its current status. The good: The new management is very attentive and friendly. He remembers regulars and loves to chat. Anyone who has been a patron of Rahul on Euclid will remember him from there. The bad: the food has really descended into mediocrity. All the dishes and my beloved masala chai that were once spiced so delicately are now unbalanced or bland. For anyone who is seeking good Indian food in Lexington or who is nostalgic for the Masala of 4 years ago, I would highly recommend Taste of India behind Five Guys on Nicholasville Rd. The food quality is great and those old patrons will recognize some familiar faces. As for Masala, I haven't been there in a while but I probably will return one day. The food was excellent. I've eaten at many Indian restaurants and the good is usually very good but it seems like the service sometimes lacks. This place can get very busy but the works work very hard at keeping up and it is a small cozy restaurant that has a very good atmosphere for a friends night out or date night. Decent find for Indian food in Lexington. Pappadums were a nice complimentary appetizer. Chicken curry was ordered medium, tasted mild. Palak paneer was okay although somewhat bland. A good amount of cheese, ordered mild, tasted mild. Actually better reheated almost a week later as the ingredients had time to meld together, making it more flavorful. Ample amount of rice served with entrees, which was nice as this not always the case at restaurants. Naan was more bready than naan elsewhere, and burnt on the bottom. Taj Mahal beer was a bottled beer served in a chilled glass. It tasted similar to Miller Genuine draft with a bit more of a bite to it. Budweiser was also bottled, yet served in room-temperature glass, mitigating the pleasure of an ice cold brew. The service was mediocre. Setting was pretty quiet despite the large open room with most tables filled. Total was around $40 for the two entrees, naan, two beers, tax and gratuity. Might go back for lunch buffet but dinner was not good enough to warrant another trip. read more
