Pay yourself in sushi! Here's why... See, I've been told by an esquire, that when you budget, you pay yourself first, before the other required expenses. Sooooo, I pay myself with sushi sometimes. This is acceptable, yeah, cuz either I try to save $25, which would eventually get spent anyway, or use it on something valuable. The value of sushi or sashimi with vegetables, is that it contains your alphabet Vitamins A, B, C, and D; plus, the greatly beneficial Omega-3. In addition to those benefits, getting a bento box combo with chicken gives you more protein for building muscle. This array of vitamins and protein sources provides satiety. It's an ideal meal for gym goers and maybe health enthusiasts; or like me a part-time dog walker. Alright, now that you've heard me out and possibly have known all this before, then, yeah have brunch, lunch, or dinner here at Matsuyama. They're conveniently located around the corner from the gym. Perfect for you! ...and also, it beats having to look for a different parking space. Just walk, you know. The shopping plaza has a great coffee shop too. I usually don't order to go sushi and this is my first time doing overall at this place and in general . The location is good and the inside of the restaurant is a decent size and pretty clean . Let's get into the food it was done pretty fast and fresh the gyoza and the string beans are decently priced and they taste cool . This simple Japanese restaurant hit the spot when I was craving sushi one night. I was able to get my sushi fix as this is one of the sushi spots that is open late in this area. When me and my date came in around 8 o'clock they still accommodated us with a smile which is nice. The sushi prices are actually right really reasonable too, but it could be because it's Central Valley? This food came out pretty quick. We ordered a side of Gyoza, which is piping hot and good crispy. The four sushi rolls that we ordered, some were good. The one that had tempura, the tempura seems a little bit old. Maybe I've been sitting out for a while or something? My full experience was not really had because I knew they were rushing us out because they wanted to close up as after we've got our food and finish eating. It was past 9 PM so I can't really gauge their service. All in all I think they were trying to be pretty friendly. I have to dock one star because the sushi was not that great and I've had better. There were some rolls that were OK in decent. Also, I have to deduct another star because I did find us some more hair on one of the plates. I ordered two lunch bentos and one deluxe sashimi plate. On their Yelp site, the lunch bentos are $10.95 each, and the deluxe sashimi plate shows as $15.95. The total I was expecting should have been around $40-$45 (for lunch). The total when I went to pick up my order was $68.05!!!!!!!!!!!! I called when I got home when I had actually looked at my receipt to clarify. The lady said that prices had just gone up... understandable with the current economy.. but double?!?! These prices are more fine dining dinner prices than a quick lunch pick up. I was horrified!! My teriyaki chicken was dry, and the sashimi I ordered was thrown and mixed with the salad and dressing it was paired paired with. Don't waste your money here. read more

I love matsuyama. I love their bento boxes, i always go for chicken katsu with tempura veggies + shrimp. The portions are good and it comes with miso soup. My favorite roll and a roll I think everyone should give a go is their volcano roll. It's a little on the spicy spicy side and it looks like a volcano!!! WITH LAVA!! read more

This has got to be the worst sushi place in town :( When we arrived we were told to "sit down" as the hostess/waitress pointed to a table and walked away. My arm literally stuck to the table and, when we were finally brought menus, I had to ask the employee to wipe down the table for us. It was gross. The menus themselves had a good selection of rolls so I tried to stay optimistic. We each ordered two rolls for a total of 6 for the table. As we waited for our food, I noticed bags of take out on a table in the middle of the restaurant. As I looked at them, a waitress walked over and added another bag. There was no one seated at the table. A few minutes later, a woman came in for "take out" and the cashier asked her for the name, then pointed to the table. She walked over and picked out the one with her name on it and left the others. What? Excuse me? So they basically put people's food out in the middle of the restaurant to sit until they come pick it up? Lazy and disgusting! We ordered: The Matsuyama Roll, The Black Dragon Roll, The Tiger Roll, The King's Roll, The Island Roll, and the BBQ Salmon Maki. The island Roll we gave 2/5. The nuts added nice flavor and the honey sauce was ok, but tasted more teriyaki than honey-like. The BBQ Salmon Maki was almost inedible! think burnt and yet raw salmon with some crappy BBQ sauce and cucumbers. Not very appetizing. 0/5. The Matsuyama Roll was ok. It tasted more like a salad with dressing on it than a sushi roll... 2/5. The King's Roll was the favorite for all of us and was still just average - 3/5 at best. The yellow pickle in the Tiger Roll was a nice touch and so we gave it 2/5 and The black Dragon Roll was also just short of mediocre at 2/5 as well. The interior is small and stuffy and not clean at all and we could not wait to leave. Same boring presentation on every roll and no idea how to mix sweet, sour and spicy flavors. A huge disappointment. This place is less than 5 minutes from my house and I will not be returning. We all left very disappointed. read more

Haven't gone here for a couple of years because they just got too expensive. I mean, $3.00 for a soda? So decided, for old times sake, to take the wife back there for dinner for here birthday (I'm a cheapskate, I know). What a big disappointment! They were busy...and understaffed. The phone was loud, and kept ringing, unanswered...assuming for take-out orders. A young couple had brought their two screaming kids along (get a babysitter for crying out loud .. no pun instended). We couldn't even hear the background music it was so NOISEY. As expected, order took a while to get, and the teriyaki salmon was a bit overcooked. Biggest issue though, was the absolutely terrible ambiance. It also ticks me off that the main cook parks his mercedes directly in front of the restaurant...(he ALWAYS does...that's it buddy...make the customer look for closer parking spots. $11.00+ for a Bento Box for lunch is a bit pricey. That doesn't include a drink. Steamed rice, grilled chicken thighs, a helping of lettuce, miso soup (basically water and soy sauce), tempura, 2 CA rolls. I would prefer them to hold the "soup" and rolls and add a drink for that price. Chicken was swimming in teriyaki sauce. It had spilled over the foil and onto the tempura, making it all soggy. I will not be going back. I can go someplace twice for the amount they charge for cheap food. read more

I was cleaning out some receipts and found the one for this restaurant. I kept it because I meant to write a review, so here it is: I went there in February of 2020, about a month before the lockdown. I was the only one in the restaurant at about 8:15 pm. The restaurant smelled like that disinfectant/air freshener they use in bathrooms, so that was in my nose/mouth the whole time I was there. Another thing I remember is that the food was not fresh. For years I have shopped at apple market, rip apple market lol, and got my coffee at house of coffees and eaten at the lovely ricks pizza, and I never really acknowledged matsuyama! Until recently I finally gave it a shot, not knowing what to expect I got a teriyaki chicken bento box and added a matsuyama roll, a simple roll but so delicious! And I ate lunch and dinner out of how much food I got out of it. They are on the pricey side but it is well worth it, very friendly staff fresh delicious food so I can't complain. This place is great! I love the suchi and the people that work there are really nice. Their miso soup is the best anywhere. I live in San Francisco and I have yet to find a miso soup this good. Some of the sauces they put on the top of the rolls are a little sweet but I usually dont order the ones with the sweet sauce, problem solved. Ever since my favorite Japanese restaurants (Yoneda and Kikusui) closed, there's not been much in the way of good Japanese food in the area. Matsuyama fails to fill that void. The owners are not Japanese, and I feel that in most cases, cuisine is known and prepared best by someone who grew up in that culture. I have gone there a few times and each time, I left feeling underwhelmed. Tables are sometimes tacky to the touch. Decor is very plain, like they aren't finished. Miso soup seems like instant soup. Chicken teriyaki sauce tastes bottled. The few times I've had nigiri sushi, the rice seemed warm. Or maybe it was the fish. Either way, it wasn't tasty. Their range of dishes seems limited. My husband loves sukiyaki. He asked one time, out of curiosity, if they had it, and nobody knew what it was. I always seem to leave that place and wind up with a stomachache. Maybe it's from eating a big portion. Maybe it's the grease from frying tenpura. Maybe it's because this seems like the McDonald's of Japanese food. This is not a place I will go to if given a choice. I have friends who rave about this place and I think "Are you kidding me?" I encourage them to visit SF Japantown, dine there, then tell me again how Matsuyama rates. read more

My wife loves this place but if that wasn't the case, I probably wouldn't visit as often as we do. Admittedly the food is quite good, not exceptional. The service is reasonable, not great. It seems reasonable clean and the seating is traditional but not exceptionally comfortable. Their prices are quite reasonable though. I do like their teriyaki chicken dinner which is served with soup, salad and white rice which I'd typically have with a Saporro. We typically get a starter of edimame, and the wife likes the volcano rolls. So overall not a bad place to visit for some Japanese food, but just not exceptional by any means IMHO. read more

My friend said she really liked this place and took me for a late birthday treat. (ok I'm getting kind of tired of "japanese" food out here.... but what was I going to say? "I know I'm japanese but I don't want to eat it?" lol) so... the places I've been going up here have been disappointing. I got the sashimi plate. They chopped the sashimi into rectangles. I really mean like ... real rectangles. This destroyed the texture of the meal, really a big big deal for me! It was not very flavorful, some of the pieces needed hydration or something lol. ok... and the rice was hard you know when you can feel every grain you eat in your mouth. bleh. As for the gyoza appetizer, I was somewhat impressed. They needed a little bit more chinese cabbage and other flavors to change it from bland to super delicious, but otherwise, pretty good. miso shiru was o.k. nothing super spectacular.
