It turns out that my previous "security" storm door wasn't as secure as I thought it was. Apparently my burglar only needed a pry bar to pop out the deadbolt and invade my house. I can't imagine a more secure door than what Mascotte builds. These are welded steel tubes in a thick steel frame that screws onto your house framing with hardened one-way bolts. While they would make fine prison doors, their decorative designs and glossy baked-on finish also make them attractive on your house. My neighbor who is a welder has looked at it and found all the work to be first class. Every section is excellently welded and all welds were ground down and smooth. I was a little concerned when I talked to the maker of the door on the phone since he wasn't familiar with house framing or how his door would attach to my house. Fortunately the installers knew exactly what was involved. Many older houses like mine don't have a 2x4 next to the door jam so the bolts drilled into the middle of the casing would go through nothing else. They'd look secure but it would still be possible to pry the door off the house with the casing. One side of this door frame did have a half inch void so the installer simply staggered the bolts into the thick jam and the existing 2x4 so they would miss the void. Not only did they paint the bolts to match the door, they gave me a bottle of paint in case I needed to repaint them. The door comes with effective V-channel weather stripping built into the door. This side of my house gets hit with powerful and cold East winds yet I've felt no air leaking in at all. The door makes a reassuring "clunk" sound when it is closed. One disadvantage of this door is that it needs to be keyed on both sides. It's designed to accommodate a mail slot so there is a small piece of removable glass that can easily be broken to gain access to the door handle and any unkeyed lock. I'm tempted to replace this with a 1/4" sheet of steel and keep the key in the door. Another disadvantage is that these doors are pretty expensive. read more

My Northeast Portland neighborhood isn't what it used to be. The City's policy of urban densification has brought big-city crime with it. Finding tool marks on my front door jamb with the accompanying bump-key exploits that ruined my deadbolt gave me pause. The fact that elderly family members were too scared to answer the door for mail deliveries when alone in the house led me to Mascotte. Research into their product included a letter from the Portland Police Bureau requesting Mascotte's advanced training courses for first responders into how to defeat their doors for rescues and dynamic entry situations. If the police and their battering rams can't get in without help, how is a would-be burglar going to deal with this product? That was my thinking when I called. Mr. Mascotte's wife was very cordial and helpful, showing us the product line and trying to point us toward the least expensive models. She really was doing the opposite of upselling, and small wonder--these top-of-the-line doors are expensive! Fortunately I had the funds to buy one of the fancier models for my front and back doors. Mascotte's representative came out to take precise measurements and I made a half-down payment at that time. The welded steel, powder-coated doors were custom-made in about ten weeks or less at their local facility and installed by an expert father-son contracting team who have their hands full doing mostly Mascotte installs. The old screen doors were hauled away and the doors were solidly drilled into place through stucco into the house's framing. The one-way bolts were painted the matching base color and I paid the workmen their installation fee and the balance for the doors. They were so securely fastened that even if a truck tied chains to the door and ran for it, the side of the house would give way before the door and its hardware would be compromised. They're that well built--like what you would see in a prison or bank vault, but in several pleasing designs and colors. They really class up the place! My neighbor was so jealous that he immediately called the company and ordered his own custom front door, which was an odd 4' by 8' size. It is glorious. I was so happy with the new doors that I engaged Mascotte to return and install a double door to secure my patio entrance. Now I feel truly safe and secure in my own home again, and so do my relatives! Trust me, there are no new tool marks on these doors. There are much easier targets for thieves elsewhere in the neighborhood. The doors are breathtakingly beautiful, as well. They are extremely well sealed and we no longer experience any drafts at any of the entryways, no matter how hard the east wind blows out of the Columbia Gorge. The glass windows can be swapped out easily with screens in the summer, and nobody is getting through that screen door! The only drawbacks we've experienced other than the inconvenience of using a key to get in or out of the house (a small price to pay for security) are three. One is the different keying for the patio door because it was ordered at a separate time from our front and back doors, but this was explained to us at the time and we didn't really care since we don't use it frequently. Two is the fact that the deadbolt locks are exposed to the elements and rainwater gets into the mechanism rather easily, which means dry wax lubrication is a necessity to avoid tedious regular maintenance. After much testing, we finally settled on DuPont Chain-Saver Wax-Based Chain Lube, which won't freeze or run and you don't have to wipe your keys off before putting them back in your pocket! The last is the expense of the custom doors, which we love for their looks and which we felt were well worth it. The more plain, introductory basic models are just as sturdy but cost a lot less because they're more easily welded in quantity. We would hate to leave our home now because we couldn't take these beauties with us! I've seen other security doors and they are mainly a deterrent to crime. Mascotte doors will keep the police out--unless they first ask very nicely. read more

I picked up information for this company at the home and garden show. I had been wanting to add security doors to my business for some time and thought this would be the perfect opportunity. They called quickly after the show to schedule, but rescheduled the day of the consult. When the representative pulled up in front of my business, he sat in his truck for a few minutes before we received a call from him telling us he couldn't find us. I told him he was parked right outside the front door and he started complaining about how there are no numbers on the building. I went outside to greet him and instead of a 'hello, my name is....', he went off on a rant about how there are no numbers on my building. There are numbers on that one and that one, but not this one or that one....! (The business is well marked with a giant logo on the front of the building & the windows have signs with our logo as well) I took him to the first of two doors and he immediately started off with "well, we've got a problem here" and complained about the metal frames and how the doors open out and the Fire Marshall won't allow it (even though these are not emergency exits?) and I tried to explain WHY we were wanting them and why we wanted the security door inside with the existing door opening out and he interrupted telling me it didn't make sense. Because of his tone I told him he should leave. If someone from a company is going to be argumentative and that cranky right off the bat, I'm not going to waste my time or theirs. Why should it matter to them WHAT we need or WHY we need it? At least listen to your customers and offer solutions in a friendly manner. read more

I am very disappointed with this company. They refused to provide us with a quote for "window guards" on two laundry rooms at an apartment complex we manage, because it "doesn't make sense". Per HUD regulations (as this is an affordable housing complex), we needed swing away guards, due to egress - but instead of providing us with a quote, just wanted to argue with our request. Outstanding Security Doors We had Mascotte install 3 security doors at our LIncoln City beach house. The doors are very high quality and they are very nice looking and match the color of our house. The installation was quality. This is a highly reliable company, friendly, and very knowledgeable. They gave us free touch up paint too since the weather at the beach can be tough on doors, but these doors really hold up. My 20 year old security door finally gave up the ghost and I couldn't find a replacement that I was happy with in home improvement stores. Called Mascotte and scheduled a visit. Lots of door options to select from, and found what I was looking for in their catalog. Half down for a down payment, and an estimate of 4 weeks for them to manufacture the door and come out to install it. They were early by a week. Removed and hauled the old door away and had the new one in place in an hour. The door is very well built - solid as a rock, and the frame was bolted down to the house studs around the existing opening with the screws protected from removal from the outside. The old door's anchor holes in the door frame were neatly patched over. The installer left the area clean and neat. I'm considering a security door for the back patio door, and Mascotte will be getting my business if I decide to proceed. read more
