For New Jersey, Mason Jar's attempt at barbecue is fair. If you venture to Mason Jar and possibly get swayed into trying a pizza or some other dish, it will be a huge mistake. They are best known for their pulled pork platter, side of corn bread, and choice of cole slaw etc. with a variety of sauces ranging from hot to vinegar and on. The prices are fair, the noise level outrageous, service is good. This best for a family night. Not a romantic venue. read more

I've been here a few times and I'm never impressed. The latest visit was this past Saturday night to hear some live music and have a casual dinner. First, the band was great, whoever they were! Second, we sat in a booth in the bar area and were practically crowded out by the drunks standing around trying to pick up dates. If you are over 55, white and wear mom jeans or brown loafers with a leather blazer, this is the place for you. Never have I seen so many drunk moms and dads, divorcees and retirees lol. Third, the food. I had the veggie burger with the three-bean salad. I have no idea how they justify charging $10+ for a FROZEN veggie patty and honey mustard, but who knows. It was mediocre and not worth it. The three bean salad was good but not filling. I would have gotten some sort of substitute but they have practically none and the aide orders are $4.99! My server steered me away from the pricey sides. My date got the cheese steak and he couldn't even eat half. Overall, not worth the food, the prices or the crowd. Unless you are single, older and ready to mingle. The one plus was the people-watching. Absolutely horrendous... Stopped in here for dinner with my parents, I've been here before but this was officially my last visit. Seemed that the undertrained, uninterested staff was more concerned talking with each other and their phones than helping customers. Here are some of the noteworthy points. Calamari was over fried pathetic "kernels", almost no rings and not a leg bundle in the entire plate. Ordered a vodka martini, drink came and was straight vodka. When we asked for it to be changed another came the exact same way. Waiter did not know what beer was on tap or what they had. Waiter brought out out pizza and one for another table with no tray. Cook came out with the pizza and there was no tray to put it on. Forgotten items constantly, food and drinks the entire meal. Homemade chips are made on premises, asked for them.. After reminding our waiter twice he came out with some kind of pre made nachos. 7 bucks for some off brand Doritos? Asked to see the manager, he "was not there", was told to come back on Thursday after 4. We did and he wasn't there either, after talking about our experience we got "he musta been new" with a smirk. Mason Jar, has been on the steady decline for the past few years. This last visit put the nail in the coffin for me. A summary: Would I return if I lived in the area and my friends wanted to go? Yes! The drink list looked pretty awesome and I'm curious about that brick oven pizza they have. It's spacious inside and looks like it would be an excellent place to go with a group or even with co-workers. Will I return (since it would require forgoing trying something else during my limited time in the region)? No way. What I ordered: burnt tips with coleslaw and Cajun fries, this came with cornbread I'll review in reverse order. Cornbread was dense and had a 'fresh cake' like texture. It wasn't bad but was a little sweet for me personally. Cajun fries... let me put it this way... the only thing Cajun about them was their name. They were damn good for fries (with a potato skin side on nearly each one) and had a good thick crisp outside but they were not spicy at all. Had I known, I would have ordered the sweet potato fries instead. Coleslaw was a (very) lightly mayo-ed style rather than a vinegar style. It was ok, seemed fresh but not amazing or special. Burnt tips were tiny little pieces of meat the size of half a piece of gum (imagine cutting a piece of Dentyne Ice in half and smushed it a little). They were ok. I am a weird eater so I ate them one morsel at a time. Most of the pieces were fairly lean - which I am a big fan of. The two BBQ sauces that were dropped off at my table were labeled hot and regular. The hot was hot only in name, much like the Cajun fries. It was intensely watered down to the point where I was wondering if it was, in fact, literally watered down. I think if it IS supposed to be as runny as water, they should put it in a bottle with a small top rather than a screw off top with a bottle opening the size of a half dollar. Service. Well. I have chosen to believe that my server didn't feel well and maybe had some upsetting things going on in their personal life. This would be a good excuse for the super-downtrodden demeanor, disappearing for an extended period of time after taking my drink order (to perform side-work I noticed), never checking on me after my food was dropped off, and never refilling my water (I was sucking on ice cubes because I was so parched by the end of the meal). From what I could tell, I was this person's only table for the first 3/4 of my time there (it was a Tuesday night at 5, the place was pretty empty). read more

Take out experience was less than stellar. Called and was put on hold for 2 minutes , ordered and told the food would be ready in 20-25 minutes. My food was finally ready in 45 minutes. I ordered a burger and calamari. I was supposed to have bacon - No Bacon. No lettuce, tomato or onion. Just burger, bun and cheese. As I was handed my take-out food I inquired about utensils as I was staying at a hotel nearby. I got an annoyed response that "yes", there were utensils. When I got back to my room and opened the bag and, of course, no utensils! I must admit I was warned that the place is hit-n-miss, but I took my chances. I have been a customer of the Mason Jar for many years. Done the brunch. Done the pizza. Done the barbecue. Wife and I were meeting Miss L for dinner and Mason Jar was a convenient spot. I think this is the first time I was ever there and saw an Octoberfest menu. We started by ordering a few appetizers. The Konigsberger Klop (spicy meatballs), Ham and sauerkraut balls. A few minutes later our waitress informed us that they were out of the Konigsberger Klop. Uh...6:00 pm on a weeknight!?!??! So, the waitress suggested that the side order of spatzle be brought out as an appetizer instead of as a side dish. Okay. The spatzle arrived. Never seen any spatzle quite like that. It looked like oatmeal. It tasted like...uh...well....uh....oatmeal?!? God awful. It was immediately returned and taken off of our bill. I don't think anybody in the kitchen has ever eaten, let alone seen, spatzle in their lives. The ham and sauerkraut balls were excellent. Four perfectly fried balls packed with sauerkraut and small pieces of ham. The only odd thing was that they came served with a side of marinara sauce. Still unsure if it was a mistake. Sauerkraut and marinara sauce aren't really a good combination. Miss L had some nice looking buffalo wings for dinner. She enjoyed. My wife was so so with the weiner schnitzel. She has had better at places like the Iron Horse in Westwood or Kirkers Inn in Hawthorne. My main was Rouladen. First time I have ever had this dish. It was thinly sliced beef filled with mustard, bacon, onions, garlic and pickles braised in a red wine sauce. It was accompanied by black forest home fries and applesauce. This was an excellent dish! It was perfectly cooked and very flavorful. Dessert was some kind of Reeses ice creamy pie which my wife and Miss L enjoyed. I had the blueberry crisp and it was a disappointment. This is one of the most run down restaurants I've seen in awhile, which is a shame because the place is absolutely HUGE with a great potential. The server (young man) was very kind however the food is terrible. Seems old and is just dry and bland. The Mac n cheese tastes like the boxed kind with no attempts at a cheese sauce and the rest of the food had no type of life in them. I wouldn't go back here In response to the restaurant's comment: FIRST off, I was not there July 4 I was there weeks ago and just wrote the above comment on whatever day it was posted, SECOND of all, if you look at the majority of the reviews for this place I think you can see that others are in agreement. The service was excellent and the food was great too. Leanne the bartender was fantastic! She was very chipper and positive. She recommended my food and beer and was spot on! I got the burnt ends! I even ate all the applesauce and I am not even a fan! This was my first time at the Mason Jar and I will definitely come back. It seems like Leanne has built a rapport with her customers and they enjoy coming there. The bar area has five TVs and is a good place to watch a game. Garbage.... Staying at the hotel, literally across the parking lot, I drank three beers and got some chicken parm to go. It was shoe leather. I am not one to complain typically, and had I been driving, I probably would not have bothered, but I was literally across the parking lot, so I took it back. I wrote this letter to the owner of The Mason Jar after receiving terrible service twice at a resturant we would frequest often. you will see after my letter the surrly response I recieved back from the owner. What a terrible way to treat your patrons. I am writing to you today to complain about two serious incidents of poor service that occurred at your restaurant. Upon until these two incidents, my family and friends frequented your establishment quite often. The first incident occurred on Easter Sunday, April 1, 2018. For the past few years our family has chosen your restaurant for our Easter meal and have had no issues until this year. We were a party of 11 and seated as far back as you can get in your restaurant. The waitress who served us (blonde, short hair, thin build and probably in her very late 40s) was the main issue. She treated us with complete disrespect. First it took her over 20 minutes to get to us for just our drink order. She seemed annoyed with anything we asked her for. After the first order of drinks, she never came back. Never cleared our plates so we could go back to the buffet for second or desserts. We had to walk through the restaurant to find her and ask her to come back to the table. She was crass when we asked for things that were on the "extra" buffet menu. We waited forever for everything. It turned our Easter meal into a very sour experience. The second incident occurred on April 22, 2018. Myself and a large group of friends from our motorcycle club (30 guests in total) came to your restaurant for lunch. Unfortunately, we were assigned the same waitress. First she rearranged and moved our tables a few times with us standing next to the tables before she got the table situation figured out, which annoyed some of your other patrons at other surrounding tables. After we were all seated, she took a good 30 minutes to come and take our drink orders and then another 30 minutes to get the drinks. It took another 20 minutes for her to come and take our appetizer order. The appetizers didn't come out for an hour and when they did come out they were staggered far apart time wise, they were cold, and some people got there appetizers at the same time their good come out which was much longer than an hour. While we were waiting for our appetizers to come, she took our meal orders. They took at least another 30 minutes after we got the appetizers. More than half the orders were wrong, missing items, cold and one order which was just the raw tuna she completely forgot about. When asked about missing items, she crassly said "well I put them in, I don't know where they are" and continued doing something else instead of going back to the kitchen to look for the missing items. Anytime we asked for her to fix an item we treated with annoyance from her. I believe for a table of 30 people, there should have been two waitresses assigned, but we just had her. Then she tried to give us the bill before asking if we wanted desert, which people did want. The desserts were disappointing to say the least. The warm deserts were ice cold and hard as a rock. Our bill was over $550 and she had to take it back to take off all the stuff she forgot to serve. In the end, we were treated with overall distain, rudeness, no common courtesy and snide comments under her breath. Just because we are bikers, doesn't mean we don't deserve respect. We ride in large groups a lot and your establishments could have been on our stop list, but that doesn't seem to be going to happen now. My family and my friends don't want to come back to your restaurant because of these instances and are very disappointed in how we were treated. Everyone deserves respect and good food, especially when you are paying that much money. I hope I receive a response explaining why this is allowed in your restaurant and, in addition, I hope the waitress ceases her actions. RESPONSE: I want to thank you for taking the time to send us your letter about your disappointing episodes at the Mason Jar. We work very hard here to put out good food, and service....By you writing you're your letter shows we didn't do very well. I apologize for your disappointment.. We have and will speak to all of our employees... There were some extenuating circumstances, but that is our problem and shouldn't impact you. Every loser, or bad situation has a reason....but the consumer doesn't really care..... We would be please if you would come again, and please let me know in advance so that we can make sure that you're well taken care of. read more

The rest of our party's meal was less than satisfactory, and we all took out our phones to yelp about the terrible experience afterwards. First time and last time for me. I come to the Mason Jar on occasion,usually for the live music on the weekends, and I've always had good experiences! I typically get the pulled pork platter or the balsamic chicken dinner. I've also come here for brunch, and I thought it was fantastic. They had a very good selection of food for brunch. It is a casual place, but definitely a little more than a diner. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because the waiting staff is a hit or miss... When I went a few weeks ago, I was not impressed with my waitress, but when I went last night, the waitress was fantastic! To start, the table wasn't clean. A small ant was enjoying the ketchup caked on the tablecloth. Ketchup dispenser was empty on my table, as well as the next one I tried to grab. I was given a knife that was bent at a 90 degree angle - come on guys, throw it away! You've lost the battle and I haven't even ordered the food yet! Ribs weren't very meaty though they were seasoned well. I was hungry after over half a rack since they were so measly. The sides were puny and lumped on the same plate in a rather unappetizing fashion. To top things off, the "frozen" Reese's/Oreo pie was probably nuked a bit too much - it was practically running off the plate. This place needs to re-evaluate its cleanliness, decor, and kitchen. I don't know what it is about this place that keeps us coming back but we somehow end up here every other month. We do live close by and I do like barbecue so it becomes a default option when we can't settle on what we want to eat for lunch/dinner. The prices are reasonable and I like their homemade barbecue sauces (they have a Carolina style vinegar based sauce and a traditional style barbecue sauce). I typically get either the burnt ends platter or the country fried chicken where I also get to choose 2 side dishes (fries, baked beans, mac & cheese, onion rings, sweet potato fries etc.). My 1 disappointment came from the fact that they twice fry the country fried chicken (not in a good way). How do I know? I once got the chicken where the middle of the breast was cooked but really cold which tells me they fry it lightly once, store it, and fry again to order. It's a restaurant trick that's often used and I hate it!! Nevertheless, I'm a sucker for fried chicken so I'll keep ordering it. As for the side orders, stay away from their Cajun fries (just not good) and mac & cheese (over cooked and mushy) and stick with their regular fries and onion rings. All in all, Mason Jar is a place we go when I don't feel like cooking. It's comfortable and the staff is always nice and they do have good beers on tap. We discovered Mason Jar by accidentally making a U-turn into the parking lot and ended up eating here the next day. For starters, drinks are served in Mason jars! (Hence the name) Our waiter was very friendly and attentive. The menu had a lot to choose from, so whatever you're in the mood for, it's on there. I ordered the MJ sliders with chicken and pork, no burnt ends for me. I preferred the chicken over the pulled pork. For appetizers, we ordered a pizza pie, nachos and corn nuggets. Food was good. I have always had a great experience at the Mason Jar. Their BBQ has always been good, and I am a fan of REAL Southern BBQ. Their pulled pork is very good, and the ribs last time were good as well. Tender, flavorful and smoked just right. The other nice surprise here is the pizza. Each time we go, we get a pizza as an app to split with the table. It is crisp on the bottom, thin and tasty. A perfect coal oven style pie. As far as service, I have always been happy with the service. In fact, the last time I was with a bigger group. The waitress was great and very attentive. Came here with friends for happy hour after work. After drinks we ordered appetizers which were served pretty quick. Everything was good except the wings they were on the extra crispy side. We then ordered our dinner and that also came out within 15 minutes and the food was great. I thought this restaurant was OK. The decor is nice for the type of restaurant that it is. Service was a little slow, not the worst I've experienced but certainly not the best. I ordered the sliders and whose a pulled pork, a pulled chicken, and a "burnt ends". I thought the pulled pork was pretty good but the other two fell short. As for a side, I tried the Cajun fries, these were good. I like the sauces they give you with your BBQ, both are needed because without it the meat is dry. As for apps, the buffalo wings were OK, the sauce was good but 10 dollars for 8 quarter sized buffalo wings was over priced. The potato skins were OK. I think it caters to the Ramapo College crowd and their parents who are looking for something close by when they meet their kids for weekends. On the plus side, they have a decent Brunch, but I can't help but feel like I'm eating whatever's left in the fridge in the kitchen as they make themselves ready for the next week. read more

Ok experience. Pricier than expected. The food was below average and the beers were $5 (Long Trail) and $6 (Spaten), which seemed like a rip off. At first the waitress appeared annoyed at life and distracted but luckily she got it together and her overall attitude improved. We ordered the potato pancakes and there's a dive bar near us that blows these ones out of the water. They just weren't very good. Next up- potato soup. Very creamy. It was ok. Our main dishes were Mahi tuna sliders for me and pulled pork sandwich for husband. He orginally ordered the turkey burger but they were out. The food was meh. My Mahi tuna sliders were bland and considering they came with "Wasabi mayo" that should be surprising. All I could taste was the faint flavor of Wasabi mayo as it was the only thing on the bun with any noticeable flavor. The Mahi tuna didn't taste like anything and even the avocado didn't add anything to the slider. The pulled pork sandwich was large and the bread was good but the sauce was watery and not very flavorful. Both husband's sides with the sandwich came out barely luke warm, almost cool. The mac and cheese side was a joke. Watery, more like buttered pasta. I don't think we'll be back again. read more

I usually have a burger myself with some fries and something like that but he always goes for the brisket the pork and all of that both of my friends are big meat eaters, so I can understand why they like this place. The Mason Jar is your typical dive bar. They have great beers on tap, great food and a rustic look. I started with the corn bites with spicy BBQ sauce. They were different but good. Surprisingly, I've not seen these back in the Midwest. For my entrée, I had the Black Jack Burger. It was delicious and cooked perfectly. The service here was ok although after I paid my bill my server next came back to check on me. The one thing that cracked me up about the atmosphere was the vinyl table cloths.
