Came here twice, and neither times was a good time. Food is subpar in taste, and definitely not worth the quantity or price. The general feeling of the space (that isn't the bar) feels off. I have friends who have also tried the restaurant, and have also heard from their dates, and we're all in agreeance it really wasn't great. Waiters were nice. I almost want to give an extra star for that. Almost. It's a shame, considering how close the restaurant is to Ramapo College. Most of the students I know, including myself, just drive further off for non-campus food. I would come back to try out the bar area at a legal age, as that seemed very lively and happy, and music was pleasant. Will never come back for a sit-down dinner though. read more

This was my first time here tonight and I was very underwhelmed. I ordered the half BBQ chicken which was covered in paprika and no sauce. The chicken was dry and rubbery. When I was younger I would go into the Mason Jar just about every weekend. Every now and then I'd go during the week. Since then, I've been back maybe once or twice. The one time was my High School Reunion. It was ok, the room was too small for the size of the group. The band at the time was very loud and the buffet food was average, back in 2011. I was going to go to another reunion recently, but when I called to say I would go to this most recent reunion, I didn't plan on paying at the time of my RSVP, I was going to pay at the door, just in case I wouldn't be able to make it. I was told at the time of my call, I would need to pay by check or credit card now. I was hesitant to do so, in case there was an issue of my not being able to make it. I was never told that there was a cut off time in order to get my money back. Well, as it turned out, I was not able to make it. I had talked to five people the night of the reunion and explained I couldn't make it due to my ride failed to show. I was asked to pay for a cab, which I couldn't do. I called and left many messages for the owner starting the next day only to be told that he wasn't in, and to call back the next day but I could leave a message which I did.. When I did the next day, I was told to call later, which I did. Again, I was told now he wasn't in both times I left my name, and telephone number and the reason why I was calling. This went on for the next four days. When I finally did speak to the owner, (again after leaving messages everytime I called), I was told it was too late for me to get my money back, and if I had waited to pay when I got there that night, the cost would have been more money that was listed on the page of the reunion. read more

Don't leave your valuables on your table here, even for an hour! We have patronized the Mason Jar since my boys were young, and my oldest is now 33. When my two other sons, 31 and 24, wanted to go to lunch together we thought why not the Mason Jar? We had an ok meal, which is what we expected, but we went because of the memories not because of the food. An hour after we got home, my son realized he left his sunglasses on the table. They are the only thing he has ever 'overspent' on, RayBans. The person told him no one found them. I thought that ridiculous so we drove over there where the person at the front told me that yes, they had found them just as we left, and he called the woman who found them, as she was not at work anymore. It turns out she said she put them in the Lost and Found, a basket out in the open that anyone can see and take from. They were not there. I asked for the manager who told me he would speak to her the next day when she came in. Not wanting to make a huge scene, and since i recognized him from a previous job of his, i agreed to wait. He called my son the next day and said that the RayBans found were not the ones we lost. This is somewhat unbelievable that two pairs of RayBans were found on the same table in a one hour period. We were away that day so i called the next day, asked if the manager was in, was told yes. I drove right over, was there in less than 15 minutes and was told the manager was not in. I gave my name and told him why we were there. The manager never returned the call and we will NEVER EAT at the Mason Jar again, nor will our friends and relatives. I told the manager that his lost and found was out in the open and a poor choice, and he agreed. When i went back to see him, and he 'wasn't there..cough cough', the person at the front desk told me that all valuables were supposed to be put behind the cash register. That was not done for my son's glasses, and the lack or respect shown by the Mason Jar by not making good on at item i was told they had found, and had in their possession as soon as we left, is astounding. There are plenty of places right near by just like or better than the Mason Jar. Sadly none have our family history...or our sunglasses! read more

We needed a restaurant close to Ramapo College. MJ's brunch was pretty good for what you pay, $25. Since we arrived later much of the food was not being replaced and not as appetizing as it could have been. Even the dessert table was not updated. Not a bad place. read more

The good: the food was pretty tasty. The white pizza was a really good, a tad bit too greasy, but was still really flavorful. The pulled pork was good, but needed a little more sauce. The not so good: the portion size on the pulled pork for the price seemed a little lacking. The biggest problem here though was the service. I asked for water 3-4 times. Eventually I got up and got my own from the bar. The waiter saw me do this and rushed to beat me back to the table with water. Service was slow in other aspects as well even though there were only 2 seated tables in our waiter's section. I didn't even bother asking for extras bbq sauce for the pulled pork. Edit: Additionally, it took 15 minutes between asking for the check and receiving the check... I left cash rather than risk the wait on credit card transaction. If my experience was solely based on food, I'd go back, but based on service (and the fact we waited 30 min for a table when there were several open), I think I'd rather take my business elsewhere. read more

I had the brisket (I could not even chew it) and my boyfriend had the burnt ends (looked like dog food) and his baked potato was cold. Even the dessert was horrible. Who ever came up this brilliant idea should get a raise. Not!! We went to see the band Friday night. Had dinner and drinks. To our surprise my wife had a $1 band charge to every drink. And I had a $1.50 charge for ice cubes for each drink. But people who drank wine or non alcoholic drinks were charged zero. How it that fair? We spent $150 and the other couple spent $20. Just charge everyone $5 at the damn door I will ask on our next visit if these charges apply. If so I'll drink water or soda Ira you obviously did not read of our experience. Please read it this time. And YES my receipt said $1.50 ice cubes. Notice how much my bill was. Notice I was charged extra. Notice a couple by me ate nothing and drank 2 glasses of wine and was not charged extra. That's is unfair. Charge the damn cover charge or charge everyone a "Band charge" for all drinks. Be careful when you order drinks. There is a $1.50 surcharge when you order a well alcohol mixed drink in a small glass instead of a mason jar!!! I don't like to have so much soda in my drink so I order a vodka tonic in a small glass. The alcohol should still be a jigger, just less soda. I was charged extra for that privilege! the drink was certainly not stronger, as it should have tasted because it was less diluted. Aside from the rip off, the place is cute with some good bands. Used to come here all the time in college and came back tonight for the first time since then with my boyfriend. I ordered a wedge salad. Everything was fresh, and it was more than enough food. My boyfriend had the pulled pork platter with mashed potatoes and apple sauce. The platter came with homemade barbecue sauce. It tasted good. Our service was friendly. read more

The "Jar" is a quintessential NY/NJ hometown bar and restaurant that I long for living in MA. I grew up not far away from Mahwah and my family has been coming here since 1977 since they opened . Dined here for the first time last night with a girl friend. Seemed pretty busy and took a little while to get seated. Once we were seated, the server Jospeh was very helpful. He took our order and served our drinks right away. Although the food took almost a half hour to come out, my Big Dipper sandwich and friends cheese burger were delicious. Hostess and rest of staff were very accommodating given how busy it was. Will definitely be back maybe during a week night when not so busy! read more

WOW, What a surprise. Had dinner here over the weekend, the BBQ was spectacular, especially the brisket it was tasty tender and plentiful. The table shared some apps they were on the money especially the chicken wings. We ordered a pizza and that was excellent. It was one of the best thin crust pizza's I've had in the area. Horrible and totally disappointed!!! I called and made reservations for a party if 8 for 7:00. I inquired about a special celebration and was told they would bring a piece of cake and sparklers as well as sign happy birthday. Service wAs awful and 1/2 way through meal they were shuffling tables, yelling and had opened outside door to set up for in coming band. So disturbing to all the people in the room finishing our dinner. Never offered coffee and certainly no birthday song or cake. We tried to speak with manager about our disappointment and all he could offer was a free drink at the bar!!! I never base a review of a place on one visit, as they can easily have an off night. I tried the smoked wings a few nights ago. They had good flavor, but were incredibly dry... Either the smoker was too hot, or they threw them in an oven to reheat them before serving... Either way not what I would expect from a place touting itself as having Amazing BBQ. I would have really enjoyed finding a BBQ restaurant up here, but I guess I'll have to go back home to get some. Tonight I went back again as I was staying across the street. I order a burger, cooked to medium with added bacon and fries. The burger came out on the rare side of medium rare... The bacon was luke-warm to the touch and had obviously been sitting since before I arrived at the restaurant... Oh, and the place was empty, so an overworked chef was not the issue. On a long weekend away, the Mason Jar was the perfect place to hang out. Within staggering distance of the hotel in which I was staying, and live bands two of the three nights I was there, it was perfect to let down what's left of my hair and relax. The tap room is in the center of the building, with dining areas on either side. Booths line the wall next to the window, and there are tables available near the bar. They have a wide selection of wines and beers, as well as almost any liquor you could ask for. So, the first night, I tried the barbecue. I started with the BBQ chicken egg rolls - pulled chicken and coleslaw tucked inside an egg roll wrapper, and deep fried. Served with a thick, sweet barbecue sauce, they were the perfect way to start a meal. As an entree, I picked the "Jar-B-Cue Sampler"[sic] - pulled pork, pulled chicken, and smoked brisket. The pork and chicken were perfect, but I found the brisket a bit weak in smoke - authentic Texas barbecue uses mesquite, while The Jar smokes with hickory. It was not quite the flavor profile I expected, but was quite good - the beef was fork-tender and not stringy like other smoked briskets I've had. The problem was with me, not with the Jar. The two sides I picked were coleslaw and mac-and-cheese, because, what else would you pick? Both were perfect with the authentic southern barbecue flavor. While the desserts were tempting, I had to pass because the portions for dinner were large, and I was stuffed. I also tried some of Bestie's burnt-ends, and they were fantastic! If we didn't already have reservations the other nights we were in the area, we would have eaten here every meal since their menu has enough variety to go a few weeks without repeating. Since we prefer to sit at the bar, our bartender/server, Ashley, was the perfect host for the evening. Even though she was busy from the time we walked in to the time we stumbled out, she was attentive and make sure our glasses were kept full - and even made time for some small talk. On the two nights she served us, she always had a smile, no matter how many people were lined up at the bar shouting out their drink orders. I have to mention that The Jar had live entertainment on the Friday/Saturday nights we were there. Luckily, we arrived there about 7:30 on Friday night and could find seats - by 9pm, every seat in the bar, plus in the dining room where the band was, was taken. Ashley and Dean, the other bartender, gave everyone the attention they deserved, and kept smiling though it all. Between the fantastic band, and the high-energy crowd (mostly an older crowd, but still lots of dancing), it was a great evening out. Saturday night was more of the same. If you're in the Mahwah area on a weekend and are looking for a place for dinner/dancing in a casual atmosphere, this should be your first choice. read more

Had a great time listening to the live music on the Friday after Thanksgiving. Great beer selection and wings are delicious. The crowd to see the live band gets pretty large, so I recommend making a reservation for a table in the room where the band plays if you want to be able to sit while enjoying the music. read more

My husband and I stopped in Monday night....and ended up leaving. One of the specials for the evening sounded amazing - crispy pork belly served with rice ($20++). Because of a dietary issue - NOT A PREFERENCE - I asked that the rice be substituted for a potato OR vegetable. The waitress refused, said that was against their policy. When I pushed, she said she would ask a manager. She came back five minutes later and said that the restaurant would not accommodate me. My husband and I decided to leave. This restaurant lost out on a $60+ meal because they wouldn't substitute out the rice??? I'm glad business is so good for this place that they can treat their customers this way. It really is a shame, we frequented this restaurant often but now we won't be going back. We ended up at the Valley Stables in Oakland and had a wonderful meal! read more

Saturday date night with my bride brought us to the Mason Jar this week. Our Sangria, which we promptly returned, tasted like watered down red wine. Asked waiter to hold dinner order until we completed our extremely SALTY appetizers, but our dinner showed almost immediately after we received our apps. Waiter was AWOL almost entire meal. Had to ask a waitress several times to retrieve our waiter. I ended up getting an earful from my bride because I left any tip. She felt we should not have left a dime. 1/5/19 As a frequent visitor to the Mason Jar, extremely disappointed at the lack of coordination on behalf of the management of the Mason Jar. We all know the dance floor is tiny. The band was playing and the tiny dance floor spilled out nearer to the tables. People were using our table for a place to hold their drinks, pocketbooks, and coats. I paid the $20 to reserve a table and eat, and being surrounded by dancing, drunk people was an uncomfortable way to enjoy dining. I was practically get a lap dance due to my table being too near the dance floor. I could have easily skipped out without paying my waitress, because she served all her tables accurately and couldn't get in the room. Please change that room, expand it, make it a dance floor, get rid of the tables. It is honestly a fire hazard. Could you be that hard up to sell a bunch of dinners at 8:30? read more

My wife and I visited this restaurant with my daughter for a special occasion. We drove past the restaurant hundreds of time and finally decided to stop in. We ordered fried calamari and were extremely disappointed. It was teriyaki style when the menu stated fried OR teriyaki. The waitress told us that teriyaki was the only option and asked if we wanted marinara sauce. Marinara sauce with teriyaki style calamari? We also ordered potato skins and were shocked when the order came out and on the plate was a single, one potato, spilt in half for a whopping $9. Are you serious... then our meals came out and the best thing about the meals was that they were hot. This place was an extreme disappointment and we will never again visit it. HAD AN AWESOME EXPERIENCE HERE. Went here last December and got drunk. (That constitutes awesome) The bartenders were extremely nice even the female ones which usually doesn't happen and she even bought me 2 shots. They make their drinks strong and affordable. Now the people that hang tough there aren't so "awesome" All the older men wreak of a cologne that screams "I shouldn't have knocked up Rhonda from Bayonne and shoulda gotten drafted for the Yanks" and the women that dance around drunk like to pretend they star in the movie Hysterical Blindness and try to relive memories that probably weren't made because they are the Rhonda's of Bergen County.... Their food is pretty good too, the Santa Fe chopped chicken salad is pretty tasty. I would definitely come back here and get wasted again.....Looking forward to it this December. read more

Absolutely horrible. We waited 20 minutes before our server even acknowledged us. Another 30 minutes before we got our appetizers. Than another 40 minutes before our cold dinner. That hostess though seriously needs a reality check- the one with the short brown hair up in a ponytail. For someone in the service industry, you'd think she wouldn't be so rude to customers. Mason Jar is on the same street as my college and I'll only ever go if I'm with my parents. It's all-around alright. The service is a little below average, not fast but fairly slow. For a group of four, you would figure it would not take that long to service us. The food is a pretty pricey for simple meals. This restaurant needs a major upgrade! read more

Went back after 20 years, pretty much the same but a little older and greasier. I'm glad someone else was paying. We were seated far from the entrance and thank God for cell phones as I called them to remind them to send the server. Hamburger was good, as was Black Bean Burger, but the BB Burger only came with bean salad (that's a lot of beans) not a great menu idea.
