This was the worst dining experience based food quality I have sat down for. Do not order the avocado crab appetizer unless you enjoy heapings of Heinz cocktail sauce piled upon your avocado and crab ($15). Probably the worst service I've ever experienced and mediocre food. It took over an hour from the point of ordering for our food to be ready and our waitress did not check in with us AT ALL during the waiting time or while we were eating. The owner (or possibly the manager) came over twice to see how it was going and we expressed our frustration to him and nothing was done he told us that our orders took awhile to cook but an entire our, a little ridiculous. The food was mediocre, Mac and cheese was runny, homemade apple sauce was amazing, the Kansas ribs had a slab of sauce on top but otherwise no taste. This isn't a "Must go".... but the food is desent and the location to Ramapo College is great. If you do go.... don't expect much from the service... but order the brick oven pizza. So have been going to the Mason Jar forever...in fact, as a student at nearby Ramapo College in the 70's, it was a truck stop with some of the best food for little money--we went all the time. We still go quite often. My husband and I felt like burgers this past Saturday night so off we went to the Mason Jar (as we usually do!) which is just down Rt. 202. When I gave my order to the server (Burger, rare, no cheese, onion rings, lettuce and raw onion) she got a little flustered...She then had to explain to me that the new policy was the lettuce/onion/tomato or anything like that was an extra .79...EACH! We thought she was kidding. I asked if she was serious, to which she said she was. She was so embarrassed! I felt sorry for her. She said that the owner made this decision after he went to McDonald's and THEY charged extra for them!! WHAT? Then she whispers to me..."if it's ok with you, I'll charge you for the lettuce, but I'll sneak you the onions". I said alright because I really WANT lettuce and onion on my burger! We left the kid a very good tip, btw. This is so ridiculous that it will be a long time before we go back. The Stateline Diner is just down Rt. 17 (and The Shannon Rose or Houlihans, or even the new Boom Burger, etc.). The Mason Jar's owners basically lost loyal customers over what may seem trivial...but it's the principal of it! Add a $1 to the menu item if you must...and put the lettuce/tomato/onion on the side, like everywhere else!!! read more

Ordered Fish & Chips and it was undercooked. I called to complain and went back to have the meal recooked, and experienced the owner getting mad at a family with kids that were just being kids. He stated, "What does this look like, Chuckie Cheese?" Then a fight broke out between the Owner and the Dad with both screaming at eachother. Dad was mad the owner yelled at the kids and should have dealt with the parents and not yell at the kids. Other customers had to break up the fight, police came and blocked anyone from leaving the parking lot. It made for an entertaining evening, but I would never EVER return to a business with an owner who behaves in such an unprofessional and disrespectful manner. NEVER. ***After leaving this same review on their Facebook page, further comments arguing with me (a paying customer) followed my posts that were extremely unprofessional, and never once apologizing for the unprofessional and disrespectful behavior the owner had demonstrated. Then the following day an idle threat/snarky comment was sent to my private messages on facebook.*** After seeing the yelp reviews recently left prior to my incident, I see this is typical expectations. One of the worst and most uncomfortable restaurant experiences I've had... Not only did our waitress (Jackie) not introduce herself but she was miserable and barely present throughout our meal... Rolled her eyes and sighed when we made any request, acted as if we were a huge Inconvenience, then had the audacity to look us in the eyes and ask us if that's all we were tipping when we tipped over the normal minimum. Thanks for your response to my review Ira. The mimosas was not the issue. The poor service was and being forced to pay an 18 percent gratuitied for bad service at a buffet. As anyone can see from your responses to my review and others, you are more interested in arguing than then you are with making customers happy. Your food was not great but as long as you enjoyed it that's all that matters. You thought we received exceptional service, that's all that matters. You think it's fine to force an 18 percent gratuitied regardless of the quality of service the customers feel they received, that's all that matters. Good luck with that attitude. This is one of the worst experiences at a restaurant i've ever had. I've never yelped before and dowloaded the app solely to write this review. If I knew how to do 0 stars, I would. My friends and I went for Sunday brunch buffet to find out it was $26 dollars. The food was mediocre at best, for a very high, unreasonable price. When my 3 friends and I received the check, we were dumfounded to see they added a $20 dollar tip for a buffet. A F***ing buffet where the customers get they're own food and serve themselves. Our waiter did nothing. I was expecting to spend $15-20 but ended up spending $35. The worst part about it was the waiter was smug and acted like they weren't ripping us off. My only issue with our last visit was that it's starting to look worn out and dated...they need a makeover and PLEASE lose the crane games and the video crap in the lobby. I've been here several times when I've had the misfortune of having to come to New Jersey for work. It was very close to my hotel, and I hate driving there, so I'd come here for the beer, but I've had the food as well. They have a large menu with lots of choices and I've tried a few of their offerings. I found their BBQ, brisket and pulled pork, the best of what they have to offer. I've also had the worst of the menu in the form of a grilled chicken that was right down awful; it didn't smell right, it was burnt, and it was terribly bland. The other bad thing is that their food is over-priced. This place reminds me of a dive-y restaurant badly in need of a makeover from one of those reality TV chefs that can make it a winner again. It seems to be getting by on drinks, happy hour specials, and location right now. But it's not a good restaurant by any means. read more

Had a nice dinner here Saturday night with my fiancé while we spent the weekend next door at the Fairfield Garden Inn. The service was excellent and the food was good. We were hoping for a wider selection of local craft beers but managed with what choices were on tap. There's a huge selection and wide array of food choices that anyone would enjoy. So much to choose. Don't let the outside fool you to think it's small restaurant because it's really not! Plenty of seating and they also had live music as well which we didn't stay for this time around. Next visit to Mahwah, we'd love to come back for dinner, drinks and some awesome music! read more

By far one of my worst bar experiences ever. I've been to bars pretty much all over the country, and nowhere did I feel as unwelcome or ignored as at Mason Jar. The hostess was the only one who seemed nice and was friendly enough to give us a smile. We decided to sit at the bar anyway, and the bartender ignored us for several minutes. It seemed like she couldn't care less. Apparently, the happy hour ended in a few mins, and that's when her shift ended, so she couldn't wait to get out of there. We ordered a beer each, and waited for the bartender to change (praying this one would be less like Bellatrix Lestrange). But alas, our prayers went unanswered. The new one had even more swag and continued to ignore us. When I finally flagged her down and requested for my beer to be changed as the current one was flat, we got the same, cold reaction. My coworker just wanted to get out of there and said that we felt unwelcome, to which the bartender simply insisted that wasn't the case, but in the same cold manner, with nary a smile. We stayed and ordered a plate of potato skins, and that was the worst too. The potatoes were deep fried, and the bacon burnt. I went here based on previous reviews, which were decent, so I couldn't help but think if our color had something to do with the treatment we received (my coworker is an African American, and I am Indian). Needless to say, I don't think such places deserve anything more than 1 star. read more

I've been wanting to try this place for a long time but was hesitant to because of some of the reviews here. As luck would have it, we spent hours at the Ramapo Reserve hiking and were starving so we gave it a try. We had a group of seven of us. It was fairly crowded lots of people come to watch football being on but we were seated right away. Our server was great, wish I remembered his name, but he gave us a few recommendations and we all ordered sandwiches and salads. The Texas Brisket was awesome, as was the Reuben. Also the dip they give you with the sweet potato fries was yummy! I really like the laid back bar/pub atmosphere. Great place, great food. Our server was polite and attentive. We all said we will be back when we are in the mood for bar/grill food. I don't understand all the negative reviews, it was crowded and people obviously like it. Glad we gave it a try! read more

It started out badly. I ordered a beer, which is hard to get wrong, and it was fine. My wife ordered an iced tea... simple, right? She tasted it and frowned. Went on a sat night and were pleased to get seated right away. The place is large enough to accomodate. But the food was disappointing and expensive for what it was. I agree w the reviewer before me. We had the French Onion Soup for $6.50 and it was bland with a few slices of provolone melted on top. I think they used garlic bread inside the soup- yuck! I had a burger- meat was delicious but no lettuce or tomato-- just a bun. For a $10. Burger add a slice of tomato and onion and a piece of lettuce! Came back to give this long time restaurant another try since new ownership took over. On our first visit, much of the staff was replaced and the new staff was still working out some kinks. The food wasnt what it was before the new ownership took over either. The BBG selections were dry, especially the chicken and we got the impression that it may have been reheated, or, left too dry out before being served. A member of our party ordered salmon and sent it back as it couldn't have been fresh. It had a very strong fishy smell that everyone in our party could detect. That said, we flet they deserve time to get settled in as new owners and we returned. to give it another shot. Sadly, aside from lowering the prices on the usually, more expensive specials menu, the "new" Mason Jar hadn't improved much.
