Service was excellent, our waitress, Auggie was delightful. My husband and I visited on a whim. Looking for fried fish and glass of wine on a Friday. The best part it was local. Didn't even expect it in Newman but there they are on Main Street. I ordered the fish and chips, my husband ordered the Philly cheesesteak. The fish was delicious, the cod was tender cooked to perfection. My husband not so much, iykyk, we are Philadelphia natives so needless to say the bread was the problem. We stopped by for a out stop on our way home from a trip to Arnold. It was perfect for my family with toe small kids. They could not have been more friendly and welcoming. The food was also excellent and the woman who runs the kitchen clearly knows what she is doing. My wife LOVED her fish tacos and my blue chicken bacon sandwich hit the spot! Really happy to have the Mason Jar in Newman. I've eaten there a half dozen times and I've yet to be disappointed. Service, additionally, is friendly and fantastic! There's nothing exotic about the Mason Jar -- and that's a good thing. There's a "home town" vibe to the place and I hope they retain that as their business grows. Located in the historic St. George hotel on Main. Cool details like stained glass windows remain from the original building. Allegedly haunted by a family with a young daughter. They didn't visit us so I can neither confirm or deny. Service was very friendly and the food was great. A less expensive alternative to Harris Ranch on the drive to LA. Will be back. read more

This place is kind of snuck up on us. I guess they've been in town for a couple years. We never tried them surprised more people don't go there. Ever since we first tried them a couple weeks ago we've been going back once or twice a week. The burgers are terrific. Mason's Jar and Grill is about the fourth or fifth restaurant to occupy the bottom floor of the St. George Hotel in Newman in the 22 years that I have lived here. I hope they succeed in staying, as it must be difficult to get an adequate number of customers to stay open. Have been in twice since MJ&G opened, and the food is well prepared. So far we have tried the fish and chips, prawns and chips, cheesesteak sandwich, and chicken tenders. Everything was tasty, if I had to complain about anything it would be that the portions are on the lighter side given the prices. But the flavor is excellent as is the service. I am docking a star for small portions. I will return since it is in such a small group of restaurants in Newman worth going to. But I would suspect that it is hard for any restaurant to make a go of it here because the bottom line is that Newman has a small customer base. read more

I was excited to try this location out, but unfortunately, it was underwhelming. The mushroom appetizer that we had was good. The fish tacos needed more sauce and seasoning. The salmon that we ordered was slightly overcooked. The server was nice but it took forever to come out. They are your small-town bar. They may be better on a busier night. Our first visit was tonight. We had heard they serve an awesome fish and chips. My wife had that tonight and I had a cup of Navy Bean soup and a small salad. Augie was a terrific personable waitstaff. She chatted with us and made us feel comfortable. She brought refills of drinks promptly. Deep fried mushrooms were HUGE and crisp ---deee lish! With tasty ranch and interesting chipotle-like dip with a slight kick, a perfect pairing for our appetizer. Onion soup was flavorful. French dip sandwich was savory. The staff and owners seem to be nice people and polite. It's nice to have another choice here in town. That being said food was OK not over the top. Portions were relatively small in regards to price for what you get in my opinion was a bit overpriced. Again it's nice to have a place you're in town but they should really consider putting a nice big steak sandwich on the menu. Sometimes people would rather pay a few more bucks and get something. That is a nice steak sandwich. Marty's was always the go to what a huge loss When they closed. But as time goes on, hopefully the owner will introduce a Marty's steak sandwich. I think it would be a huge hit. Again the only complaint I have was portion size and the fish and chips were a bit rubbery the fish anyway. Tartar sauce was good. All in all I will go back again, but hopefully the owner reads this and thinks about something similar to Marty's. It was such a huge hit for so many years in this area. read more
