The heat of the day melted my winter brain, promenaded me by my spring slumber and slipped me straight into summer mode. The signal of sweat ignited the inner petition for a sweet treat - particularly one of a frozen delight. I surveyed the Carlisle and Harrisburg market for local legends, amidst the mass never-ending chains, and I landed on Masseys which from the outside appeared to have the right to call itself a landmark. Wait... LB... what are you doing in... don't worry about it. Labors. Completing my labors. The old school vibe and the trixie tang of Chanel No.5 cream told me most of what I needed to know. This was gonna slap, snap, snip, snop, stomp, twist and tuck. And if it didn't - I'd fall to my knees right in that parking lot. I'd be forced to bow down onto my knees and beg to the Gods for strength as Heracles once did during his own labors. For my penance, as those before me, I'd continue across a distance on said knees to showcase my humility and my humbleness like nobody else is capable of. Lucky for me - I popped open the door and was welcomed with delightful attitude. Everyone in the vicinity was happy. Not one mildly content face, nobody sad. All happy people eating happy ice cream. GREAT SIGN. And listen. If ya know the playa, ya know the game. Custard is superior. If custard is available... I'm crushing some custard baby. Book it, bake it and shake it baby. Yea shake that thing. I'm gonna take that thing. So yes. I peeped that menu for a split pea of a second and I jumped on the train. Up the coast and through the valleys. I end a top the Arctic Mount. Swiveled, churned and concreted. Atop the mountain I laid out a yell, a yell so grand it shook the shoulders of Atlas who did his best to maintain the weight of the world I run on his shoulders. Now... we ain't talking about ice cream. We talking bout Custard. We are talking about custard. THIS... THIS is custard. This is maybe dictionary custard. This is thicker than Aunt Jemima (RIP). This is thicker than a bowl of oatmeal. Thiccc will triple Cs. Dense... dowry worthy in its declaration of density, dominance and delivery. My hotel was nearby, but because of its stature I had no worry of waiting to eat it until I arrived back. Zero drip and almost no melt. Vanilla custard, M&Ms and brownie bits. The brownies were some of the best mixed-in brownies I've ever had. A weaker man wouldn't have finished this concoction. But I'm 16, 17, 20 something % body fat and I run on the saturated fat of this cream. Eggy, creamy, sweet, filling... really hit the shpotttt. Satisfied and stomichfied - My lackluster excuse for abdominals stiffened and became more defined as happiness is the true path towards washboard abs. Massey's, an underrated Yelp gem. If you don't have access to quality custard this will blow your mind. As a custardy cutie myself this didn't absolutely trample my temple - she ain't the best I ever had, nor in that convo - but she was well worth my time and more than worth the dime. I'll never be back in Pennsylvania as I've now concurred all the communities, courts, towns and cities. Every single area. Seen. Labors Done. Whatever... enough about me and my glory. Ice cream was good. One person had peanut butter and rollo flavors and one had cherry vanilla as a fresh peach sundae. The peaches were amazing. The cherries in the cherry vanilla were maraschino, not fresh, which was a little weird. The ladies behind the counter were friendly and efficient. The outdoor seating area was a nice touch. It has been quite some time since I've been to Massey's but always remembered it being good. Took my kids here to celebrate the last day of school. The ice-cream was delicious, truly amazing. It soured my experience just a little when I found a hair in my strawberry sundae. Within a few minutes, my son found a hair in his root beer float. And then I could barely believe it, but my daughter then found a hair in her ice-cream cone. One hair, gross, but it happens. Two? Then Three? I don't know how that is even possible. Ruined the whole experience. Quite a shame since the ice-cream was so amazing, but I won't be spending anymore of my money here. Please wear hair nets when making your custard! Good I like their custard with the hard shell chocolate. But it's not made the same way each time so that's my only issue. Sometimes the whole thing has chocolate all over and sometimes the chocolate is only on the edges and none in the center. read more

It's a good place food wise tasted a lot different but still good. that's not the problem though, I had a irritable experience and I was very uncomfortable. the other day I came for a soft serve and there was only two people at the counter the place was packed full and there was like a good 4 or 5 people in the back making a ruckus there was yelling then the person checking me out told me that she had to go to the back to get my change so I wait for a good 3-5 minutes with the second girl at the register there didn't seem to be any manager at all or at least not helping. read more

You better understand that "hand dipped" means they scoop it out of the can. Soft serve is just that, it comes out of the machine. It took me a few tries to understand what she meant when I asked for "hard chocolate" and she asked me if I wanted "hand dipped." Hell no, I dont want "hand dipped." I'm glad we figured it out after a few tries. Anyway, I ended up with the hand dipped chocolate with chocolate sprinkles. (the kiddie size dont judge.) It was creamy and fresh. Pro tip. There are 2 doors on each side. There is a sign on both which no one reads that says "form lines by both doors" No one followed the sign. We walked to the other side and were served right away. Don't let the store's name fool you - they have MUCH MORE than just frozen custard, which is delicious! They have almost every ice cream you can think of - all wonderful. However, on this trip, we were dealing with some health issues, yet, in the extreme heat, Massey's called out to us. Guess what?! They had low fat, no sugar ice cream, which was THE BEST ice cream ever! You would never know it is low-fat and sugar free. We will go out of our way to come back to this ice cream haven! read more

Hit with an icy blast of AC, we settled on some classic custard and a milkshake for our car's inhabitants and settled in for one of my favorite, utterly delicious old fashioned summer treats. I generally stick to classics- either vanilla or chocolate. The custard is so good, and I recommend it nice and simple. Masseys will always have a special place in my heart:) When I was younger, I used to go to summer camp that took place at Dickinson College, which was just a few steps away from this place. My counselor would take us here to get treats and I'd in turn take my parents here on the last day of camp before we drove back to nyc. I've never had frozen custard anywhere else so I'm obviously extremely biased but Masseys' tastes like they've definitely perfected their recipes hands down. I love how compared to ice cream, frozen custard has a slightly denser (almost fudgier?) texture and is super rich and creamy, literally nothing compares to it, especially on hot summer days. There's always a bunch of really fun flavors to choose from everyday and they also have options for lactose-free, gluten-free, and dairy-free dietary restrictions. The prices are fairly reasonable and there's also lots of benches for seating outside of the store. Definitely a great spot to visit whenever you're in the mood for a sweet treat. read more

If you've ever had Masseys, you will likely never step foot in a Dairy Queen again. Masseys scoops phenomenal custard, and they're always rotating flavors so it never gets boring. I've tried the strawberry shortcake, Elvis, blackberry crumble, and vanilla. All were great. I always add hot fudge, and they're really generous with it. If you get a fun flavor like strawberry shortcake, there will be nice big chunks of fruit and cake. I usually get a scoop in a cup due to my hot fudge addiction, but most people get cones and there are some great instagram moments! Cones can be covered in sprinkles or chocolate dipped. Very fun! You can only fit so many people inside, so there might be a line out the door, but it moves quickly. There are benches outside if you want to sit and stay for a while. Not only was the menu confusing and poorly organized but the pricing was awful too, purely because of the confusion with toppings or using a different type of custard.
