Friday night date night on the nicest evening of the year so far felt like the perfect excuse to finally check out Nonna Ilva after seeing it all over social media. I was craving pizza, my adventure buddy was craving a cheesesteak, and this seemed like the perfect place to satisfy both. Parking is street-only, but it's free after 5pm, which is a win for dinner plans. I managed to snag a spot right out front without having to parallel park or circle the block, which honestly felt like a small victory before the night even started. We had planned to meet at 5:30pm, but due to a slightly delayed adventure buddy situation, we walked in closer to 5:45pm -- right at peak "everyone else had the same idea" time. The place was absolutely PACKED. There was one table left in the main dining area (which we grabbed immediately), though we were told there was additional seating in another room. From our table out front, we had a full view of the action...which turned out to be both entertaining and a little telling. Going into the evening, I had already done my homework (because of course I did) and had spent the week narrowing down my order. Everything on the menu sounded incredible, but I ultimately landed on the Broccoli & Sausage Pizza Bianche -- a white pizza topped with mozzarella, broccoli, sausage, chili oil, and burrata. My adventure buddy chose the standard cheesesteak (hoagie roll, onions, provolone), which was exactly the level of culinary risk I expected from him. It quickly became clear that Nonna Ilva was significantly understaffed that evening. We waited about 15 minutes before anyone came to take our drink order, and the three staff members we saw were absolutely hustling -- managing the dining room, takeout orders, and a steady stream of DoorDash pickups. They were working hard, but there were simply too many customers for the team on hand. When our server did make it over, we placed both our drink and food orders at the same time to avoid any additional delays. About 20 minutes later, the cheesesteak arrived -- hot and solid, though a bit more straightforward than expected. Despite ordering it with onions, it came out fairly plain with just steak and cheese on a toasted roll. Flavor-wise, it delivered, but it didn't quite stand out. About 10 minutes after that, my pizza arrived -- and WOW. Absolutely stunning. Piled high with sausage, broccoli, and burrata, and finished with a generous drizzle of chili oil, it looked every bit as good as I had hoped. The timing, however, was a bit of a letdown. My adventure buddy had waited to eat until my food arrived (a noble decision), but by the time the pizza hit the table, his cheesesteak had cooled off quite a bit. Not ideal, but we made the best of it. Now let's talk about the pizza -- because this is where Nonna Ilva completely redeemed itself for me. I have been on a lifelong search for a truly great white pizza, and more often than not, it's been a disappointment -- bland, oily, and clearly an afterthought on most menus. But Nonna Ilva? Nonna Ilva cares about white pizza. This was hands down one of the best white pizzas I've ever had. Perfectly balanced, flavorful, and clearly crafted with intention. The chili oil brought just the right amount of heat, the sausage and broccoli were generous and well-distributed, and the burrata? Game changer. I've never seen another local spot incorporate burrata into a white pizza like this, and it absolutely made the dish. This is the white pizza I've been searching for. The kind I will go out of my way to come back for again and again. Unfortunately, the service side of the experience just didn't match the quality of the food that night. The staff was clearly overwhelmed, and it showed throughout the entire visit. Even paying the bill proved to be a challenge -- we eventually walked up to the register and waited in line with DoorDash drivers just to close out. We still left a good tip because the effort was there -- the team was working hard -- but the overall experience inside the restaurant felt chaotic. I had originally planned to grab dessert from their case, but decided to skip it and head elsewhere given the situation. Next time? I'll absolutely be back for that pizza... but I'll likely go the takeout route like many others seem to be doing. I've been going to Nonna Ilva since they were on Hanover Street and I'm so glad they have a sit-down restaurant now. The food is always delicious and you can tell it is made with high quality ingredients. Everyone that works there is always super friendly and even when it's busy orders tend to come out quickly. They also don't rush you out the second you're done making it a great place to meet up with friends and catch up. Overall, Nonna Ilva is easily one of the best restaurants in Carlisle. A charming mom-and-pop shop, we originally came in for their desserts but were seriously tempted by the smell of their pizza. It's a small spot with a few tables out front, perfect for a casual treat. The desserts were absolutely delicious. The pizza was okay, the crust is super doughy+ pale and the pizza was thin. Did not taste or see any white sauce on the pizza like it should have. The pasta needs a lot more sauce on the pasta it was $19.50 but not worth it. The picture of the pasta looks good only because the cheese on top. Once I got in there there was barely any sauce. First time visiting the new location on High Street last night. Some things to consider when planning your next visit: Pros: Portion sizes are great for the price, food is flavorful and obviously homemade, food came out hot, and overall we had a delicious meal. Cons: Extremely bright lighting for a restaurant that generally doesn't have the atmosphere to warrant that, loud and off brand music with weird AI women on the TV, bathroom hallway door that slammed into our table, very slow service, appetizer came out with our main meal, and was told they don't customize meals when they're busy. Grain of salt: Our waiter was trying his best at the start. He was generally attentive, but dropped the ball on a number of items we requested. He seemed to rush us at multiple different points and seemed exasperated towards the end of the meal. Not sure if it was just because he was coming off of the dinner rush, but it left us with an iffy final impression. Overall: I don't think we'll be back for eating in at the new Nonna Ilva. The food is amazing and probably the best/most authentic you'll find in Carlisle. Giving 4 stars with all things considered. Take out is probably a much better option unless some significant improvements are made with the atmosphere and service. read more

First time in the new eat in location in Carlisle for lunch today. It's charming and the food is still superb! The roll used for the Italian hoagie was perfect...chewy crunchy exterior with a soft interior and the fresh mozzarella and basil leaves included with the greens and delicious Italian meats pushed it above anything standard. My friend had the vegetable calzone. It was tasty with a great selection of veges and the ricotta cheese added old world delight. We also enjoyed a delicious Bolognese arincini. We were itching to try a different pizza than normal. We stopped by Nonna Lliva and so happy we did. We ordered a medium Suprema w/out black olives. Not a long wait. This pizza was chocked full of toppings. They were all the way to the crust. We do not love too much crust. The sauce and cheese were so good. The toppings and crust were perfect. Ok this restaurant was once in a different location that did not have dining and limited parking, but I always heard that it was good. Last week I learned that they now have indoor seating, easy parking (free and downtown) and waiters and waitresses. After hearing this last Sunday I picked up two pizzas for the wife and I (she was coming home from a girls vacation) and both pizzas were out of this world. I am kind of a pizza connoisseur but I understand that pizza comes in all types and different people like different types. These pizzas are brick oven, great but thin crust and just what I like. So last night the wife and I went for dine in service. Our expectations were exceeded. The staff was great and so was the food. The wife got the Rigatoni Carbonara (out of this world, and I got the cheese stake Stromboli and it was also great. This is not a just pizza/sub shop but also a fine Italian restaurant. I even tested and asked if I could get the Rigatoni Carbonara with a different pasta and the answers was yes we can make it with any choice of pasta. Finding a place to eat in downtown Carlisle on a Monday evening is harder the you'd think, and so we honestly stumbled on Nonna Ilva. I'm glad we did, because I was very impressed with the quality and the atmosphere. The food was delicious and reasonably priced for the portion sizes. My calzone was gigantic and PACKED with meats and cheeses (I think I'll go with one of their appetizer mini calzones next time) and the large cheese pizza provided more than enough for my wife and three kids. Also a the gelato is home made and WOW it's worth it! We had chocolate and it was out of this world! Don't get me wrong - I love Rita's, but this is on a whole other level! The staff was very friendly - the guy who took our order was super personable, asked questions, and said he tries to remember everyone local who comes through. Having spent the day around Shippensburg and the university, I needed a meal and pizza was the choice. This was a great choice. The service was good. The owner was friendly and easy going. A positive experience. Had the Margherita pizza. This is a different Margherita than I have ever had before but was worth it. Instead of your standard basil, a basil pesto-like sauce was spread over it. Not pesto. As I understand, basil, olive oil, and Parm. I would take this style again. Well worth it. The crust is more bready than I prefer, but two of us ate a large pizza. The cannoli is not as sweet as I have had or make. It has chocolate chips within the filling. I do enjoy the crunch of the shell. As for the filling, it is not my favorite. I am not used to the texture of the filling. Worth visiting again. Need to see if they make their own gnocchi as the gnocchi pesto e burrata interests me. read more

We have passed Nonna Ilva's and wanted to try it. They have many options on the menu including pizza, salads, panini, rice balls, and desserts. They have canned soda including Diet Coke. We tried a large cheese pizza. It was delicious! The crust is thin and was easier for me to eat when I folded it over. There are two bar type shelves inside with stools for eating as well as several tables outside. There is street parking. Many people came through while we were waiting for our pizza to pick up takeout orders. I will definitely go back to try other items on the menu. read more

One of the best pizzas I have had in many years. Carlisle has many pizza places, but they are often mediocre yet popular. Local opinion is often a bit insular and bland. My reference points are the superb pizzas in NJ/NY/CT that are memorable for high quality and flavor. The pizza I ordered had homemade Italian sausage on it and mushrooms that didn't come out of a can. The sauce, cheese, and dough (crust) were amazing. This Italian kitchen is relatively new in Carlisle. It is an outgrowth of their long established store at the Harrisburg market. The location has been the death knell of many previous restaurants. Service is take away although there are a couple of tables on the sidewalk of N Hanover Street. Parking is limited to on street parking. The Borough could be doing a lot more to help this restaurant and other downtown restaurants by having a designated 'pick up' parking space from 4 pm - 8pm. The gourmet Amatriciana pizza we had was very good, best crust in town. The pasta dish Rigatoni Carbonara was just OK for me, it needed a lot more smoked bacon The desserts are fabulous especially the mini cannoli. I have had better tiramisu. We tried multiple items. The pizza is great. Delicious traditional crust. We tried a slice of the Roma which is a square pizza but thinner crust than an a Sicilian. We both agreed this pizza was superior in style to a Sicilian which for us is too bready. We also tried two medium traditional pizzas, an eggplant which is not on the menu but must have been a special previously because we saw it on social media, and a crostino with ham and mushroom. We also tried two pastas, the bolognese and the carbonara. We enjoyed both but preferred the carbonara. The carbonara was almost a cross between the American style and the Italian style. Finally we tried a vegetarian arancini and a bruschetta with burrata. I preferred the bruschetta but wish it was bigger or cut smaller because it was two pieces. I think they will get into a routine because they seemed a little overwhelmed with the orders. I think I lot of people called in around the same time. Plus there were walk in orders. Everyone was very kind and even offered to get the door for me because I had a bunch of boxes. I hope they do well in this location. I know we have a lot of Italian and pizza already in Carlisle but we this was a much different style to what is here already. They were taking names for orders but not putting names on orders so a system for that might help. read more
