I've taken groups to this restaurant and I've dined as a couple here.. No more.. $93 for a side salad , spaghetti and meatball, a turkey club, a beer and a glass of wine.. Taking family out for dinner, we're from out of town. There were 6 of us. Only 1 meal out of 6 was edible. 2 shrimp scampi meals , no sauce on pasta. Waited 10-15 minutes for them to bring 2 Tbls of sauce. Pasta and shrimp cold. Asked for more sauce and waited another 10. Pasta still cold. 1 ordered Veal Parmesan and it was chewy like rubber. He was offered another dish and chose Shrimp Scampi. It was swimming in sauce and super hot, but little flavor. 2 others ordered chicken piccata... no sauce on pasta. Waited along with the others for sauce. Same treatment. The were told by our waitress in a rude tone " nothing has ever been returned to our kitchen " We were treated as if we were at fault. Yet another restaurant that I've driven by countless times for years and have never been to. Friends were in the area and we landed on Massie's since it was new to all of us. The inside is really nice! Spacious, clean and I believe recently renovated. It's been there for MANY years and while it's main focus is Italian fare, there are "American inspired" options as well. While I did have my eyeballs on the turkey dinner with all the fixings, I decided to have something that I haven't had in years: chicken marsala. Served steaming hot with a rich brown sauce, plenty of mushrooms on top of a generous portion of pasta, this dish did not disappoint. Others at the table had the lasagna (photo fail so no documentation of it) and the sea scallops. Everyone loved their entrees. We shared the calamari and mozzarella sticks (triangles, really) to start. All perfectly cooked, not greasy and delicious! But, I could have made a meal out of the garlic bread. Oh, how I love my bread....and this thick sliced, buttery, garlicky pile of goodness will bring me back again. Nobody had room for dessert...maybe next time. Service was great! read more

We were very disappointed. We were so excited to try Massies. We ordered calamari as an appetizer and most of it was very very salty, we ate half of it. The entrees were not too good. The picatta was mediocre and the lasagna was cheesy with some meat. Perhaps we have to give it a second try. Btw the server never welcomed us did not smile had no enthusiasm and the other server was wearing crocks on her feet with NO socks, That has to be a health concern. What a classic gem! We were travelling through on the way from Middlebury to Albany, and stopped over in Queensbury for the night. We asked the front desk where we might have a traditional plate of pasta, and she suggested Massie's. We drove through Glen Falls, and parked in their parking lot. I was a classic spot, bringing back memories of San Francisco's North Beach, and Boston's North End. I had the Eggplant parmesan; so good! It was sliced thin, fried crisp, the marinara was perfect. I ordered a huge meatball on the side and it was a perfect complement. My partner ordered the seafood alfredo, and it came with three large seared scallps and beautifully fresh prawns, in a perfect alfredo. Both pastas were perfectly al dente! We started with a cup of the daily soup a veggie/meat soup, slightly thicker than minestrone. We understand that the menu used to have a complete meal, including bread, salad, and so forth, but two pastas was more than enough, we just wish we had more eaters, so we could order more dishes! read more

The calamari was outstanding. Not the usual overly breaded flavorless rubbery rings offered by most restaurants - lightly breaded, you could taste the fresh flavor of the sea. The arugula Caesar salad was perfect; fresh with a dressing that could be described as 'snappy'. We had Lasagna and Spaghetti with Meatballs - both delicious. When we brought this to our servers attention, she said that's how they are! I recently went there with a friend. This used to be a great place when I was younger, and lived here. This time I was very disappointed. It cost over $60.00 for pasta, sauce, and a piece of chicken, and pasta for my friend with tomato sauce. Soda was $4+ a glass, and no bread, salad, or anything else. Service was okay. Don't bother looking at the menu - just get the baked ziti with sausage sauce or the meat sauce, and you will be dancing in your chair with your eyes closed because you just can't take how AMAZING it is! After three generations of my husband's family coming here regularly whenever they visit Lake George, I knew this was something special, but also consistent. There have been some cosmetic updates throughout the years, but you can expect to get served on the same plates as they always have. The plate has just as much to do about the taste factor, as much as the ingredients do. First off, their garlic bread is so simple and perfect, that no meal at Massie's can begin without it. We always order more than one serving because, well, one isn't enough for the both of us. Sorry, not sorry. We sat in the dining room this time because we wanted to have the soup and salad along with our dinner, so Darren, our waiter, took wonderful care of us. I started with the peppercorn parmigiana dressing on my house salad, and opted for their minestrone soup. The salad was fresh and crisp, and the soup was magnificent. I would've ordered a quart of it to go, but having it sit in a car for 4 hours until we got home to Brooklyn, probably wouldn't have been the best thing. Hubby got the New England clam chowder, and although it was good, it couldn't come close to the comfort my minestrone gave me. Absolutely delicious! The entree, of course, was a heaping portion of baked ziti that was smothered in sausage sauce and slices of mozzarella cheese, like it was a blanket tucking in a toddler. The ziti was cooked perfectly, and there's just the right about of sauce in every bite. I can close my eyes and still taste it. HIGHLY A MUST! Excellent local spot. Waitstaff is killer and had great timing for bringing out apps and mains. We had the calamari (very light and tasty), garlic bread, spaghetti & meatballs (definitely homemade), chicken piccata (cooked perfectly but a bit too much garlic and not enough lemon or capers for my taste but I go very heavy on both when I make it) and the breaded chicken parm (very good and cheesy). The place: clean and pleasant. The staff: helpful and efficient. The food: surprising and delightful. The price: just perfect for the amount and quality of food. Sat at the bar and asked the bartender what she'd recommend for a first-time customer three classics: spaghetti and meatball, lasagna, chicken parm. While a lot of other places would have servers who would say, "they're all good" or try to upsell me on the most expensive one, she said chicken parm. Kudos to this staff for knowing the menu and having an opinion. I got a little side salad to start that was super fresh. The chicken parm was substantial, with two pieces and a side of spaghetti. The chicken was hot, like right off the stovetop, and the cheese covered both pieces perfectly. I've eaten at a dozen Italian restaurants over the last year in multiple cities and Massie's is the first place that actually cooked my pasta al dente (which is the only way pasta should be cooked unless you're an infant or you forgot your dentures at home). The only two things that were too much to keep this place from being perfect and those were the seasoning (a little salty, but some people might like that), and a bit too much sauce (for every dish, including the dressing on the salad). But in the grand scheme of things, I'd rather have too much than too little. Don't pass by South Glens Falls without eating here. read more

We ordered the pork chop in brown sauce w onion, sliced potato and sweet peppers (scarp) and got a pork chop Parmesan over spaghetti drenched in marinara sauce and mozzarella cheese. We rinsed the port chop off and our dog loved it. We ordered two salads we never got. We ordered a side o broccoli that we never got (but they were kind enough to put that single stalk of broccoli in a container for us!). The braciole had so much pepper it couldn't be finished. My family has always used spaghetti & meatballs as a family gathering meal. Because of this, there are a lot of great memories and feelings associated with that meal, and also because of this, I can never order it out because it is always a huge disappointment. Upon trying Massie's though, I was shocked at how great it was! After a couple more visits, we realized they do takeout and have used that feature of theirs frequently. If you're a meat person, their pepperoni and meatballs are great, but I don't find myself preferring the sausage very much. Went on a Friday night with friends. Service was good and the food we had was also good. I had Shrimp scampi and my wife and daughter both had linguini with clam sauce. They both said they liked it. Massie's has discontinued the relish tray that formerly came out along with the pate, garlic bread, minestrone and salad prior to your massive entree. They will also charge you an extra $3.50 if you are glutton enough to ask for seconds on the deliciously greasy garlic bread. Hard times. But note that my review remains at four stars because this is still a ridiculous value that will send you waddling out well-fed and happy with a hefty doggy bag in hand. I recommend you stick with the pasta entrees, many of which use house-made pasta. Tonight I strayed to the evening special of half a chicken cacciatori. It was cut up in a red sauce rich with fried peppers, onions and mushrooms and I finished the drumstick and a bit of the thigh. Pretty good. My son had shrimp diavolo which I wouldn't recommend to the value diner: six standard shrimp swimming in the red sauce that's used for most things, but with the addition of a bit of lemon. However, he redeemed himself by ordering the amazing carrot cake dessert that does contain carrot cake but almost as an afterthought, layered between spumoni and some topping that was gone before he let me taste it, with cream cheese frosting over everything. I also want to mention the house minestrone, included with most entrees, which has lovely chunks of stewed cabbage floating in a garlic salt-heavy broth. We had a 5pm reservation for 11 people. We indicated that we would like separate checks. The waitress said she could do that, but she wouldn't take drink orders until everyone was there. Huh? There's some money lost. Many of us hadn't see others in a while so there was some chatting going on. We were told that there was another party coming in at 7pm, basically saying, "hurry up." Drinks were finallys served and orders placed. I asked for another drink and I thought that perhaps the waitress had to go out back and stomp my grapes it took so long. The food was only average, not the quality I was used to or expected. As we were cashing out, we were again reminded about the 7pm party coming in and basically told that we needed to leave. Meanwhile, the entire side of the restaurant that we were in was empty. Tables could have been rearranged quickly. Bad bad BAD customer service made worse by mediocre food. Don't let some of the prices fool you - in the dining room all meals include pate, veg crudites plate, great garlic bread. That's what you get BEFORE your salad, soup and entree! Always great drink specials and liquor prices are very reasonable. Can't tell you about desserts because I have always been too full to order one. And they have Bracjole, thin slices of beef wrapped around sausage and cheese then slow cooked in a rich red sauce till it can be pulled apart with just a fork There is street parking or drive around the back for a large well lit parking lot. Haven't dined at this iconic establishment since I was child in the 1970s. Back in the day it was THE place for authentic Italian cuisine. I thought the bloom had fallen from the flower long ago because there's never any buzz about the place. Until now. Massie's has undergone a face-lift that is drawing attention for the much needed updating but also for their excellent food. I decided to check out. Last night was my second visit. I started with the featured coctail: "Very Berry Pina Colada". Black berries and blueberries and Rum OH MY! Simply perfection. Easily could've stuck to a liquid dinner and felt satisfied bit then the grilled garlic bread arrived. Excellent appetizer. Just as I was finishing my cocktail my enormous steaming hot crock of baked Ziti arrived. The smell? Divine. The proportions of ricotta and mozzarella were expertly executed and the meat sauce was culinary mastery. It was an ooey-gooey crock of comfort food goodness. The proportion easily could have fed four if those sharing had side salads and bread accompany their portions. This is the kind of dining that is reminiscent of a by-gone era. When the secret sauce recipe was handed down, the wait staff were family and guests were treated as family. By the way, Dino was crooning ballads in the background. Massie's is an institution and is steeped in tradition. I've dined here for over 40 years, but this was my first visit in over a decade. As such, I've seen that tradition can be a 2-edged sword. There's the dining room, for instance, for which the only things that have changed since my last visit appear to be the staff and menus. Same creaky floor, loud a/c, and decor? Tradition! It has so much "traditional Italian" feel to it that I almost expect a bocce court in the parking lot! But over time, "tradition" becomes deterioration. That creaky floor is uneven in some places under the rug, and some of the doors, particularly the men's room door, are starting to get wobbly. I really have to wonder what the family's long-term plan is for the building. Then there's the menu. When the most "unconventional" entree on the menu is the salmon, and the most eclectic special on the blackboard is eggplant parmigiana, you're definitely talking tradition. But of course, there's the most important aspects, namely the food and service, both good and consistent. The portions have always been between somewhere between reasonable and generous (I think my chicken parm portion was slightly smaller than it used to be, but the lasagna had similarities to the picture of Whiteface Mountain behind us). Add to that, the delicious and appetite-spoiling garlic bread, the relish tray (olives, caluiflower, celery, peppers, and green onions), the homemade soup served out of the tureen, and that goose liver pate. I suspect the family recipes have rarely changed, for good reason. There's always going to be people for whom Massie's isn't interesting, particularly if you like the glitz of the chains, or grilled meats, or places that use the word bistro or trattoria. Given the number of large parties of 3 and sometimes 4 generations dining at Massie's, I don't think they have anything to worry about, for as long as the building stands. read more

Writers who post negative reviews of landmark restaurants in their community are actively contributing to the degradation of their own area. Treat your classic local restaurants with respect. A staid presence on Main Street since the 1930s, Massie's has witnessed the rise and fall of our little town through the decades, and has remained unchanged through it all. (And I mean REALLY unchanged: The Sinatra photos, the yellowed newspaper clippings, the fake wood paneling - these items probably endure from the grand opening. And nobody here is being ironic.) I've been coming to Massie's on Christmas Eve with my family, and seeing the same other families in the same dining room, for my whole life. Christmas wouldn't be complete without the toasted garlic bread, the liver pate and relish tray, the overflowing bowl of minestrone, and a dish of ziti or chicken parm drowning in classic marinara. Now, I admit that the modern culinary movement hasn't quite reached Massie's kitchen. If you're looking for delicately seasoned carpaccio in a port demi-glace, fire roasted shiitake mushrooms with gorgonzola crumbles, or anything in a balsamic reduction, get the hell out of South Glens Falls. But I don't come for imaginative urban cuisine. I come for the classic comfort food of my childhood, the laughs we share over a basket-bottle of Chianti, and the warmth of a town that never changes. If you are looking for "real" Italian, this is the place. Amazing calamari, chicken pizziola, and piccata were fantastic. Portions enough for 2 meals, served with pasta. Added the sausage sauce to my penne side, it was excellent! The menu is really full of perfect sauces and meat, fish, pasta- will have to go back to try each dish. The room is very cozy and so much nicer than you expect from the street. After much deciding on which Italian restaurant to go to for an anniversary dinner, this was certainly a wonderful surprise. Just like I remembered as a kid except cleaner and revamped. Beef Bracciola and Steak pizzaiola is perfectly delicious. The Minestrone soup will make you feel happy and comfy. The Liver pate spread is a good for sharing. Their Spaghetti is perfectly al dente. It's appropriate for a formal evening and also for kids. This is a family place serving solid Italian food.
