Great little hotel. I found it on Yelp, read some reviews and went with it. I stayed here last week. The staff was very pleasant and helpful. They had a continental breakfast that included the best waffles I'd ever had. It was my anniversary and the staff had made a "Happy Anniversary" card for us and scattered rose petals on the bed. I'm not sure if this is something they do for everyone's anniversary or if my husband asked them to, but it was very romantic!!! The room was very clean and had all the amenities you could imagine and more. I will definitely stay here again and again and again!!! read more

I booked this for a last minute trip up to Morro Bay, Cambria and a visit to the Hearst Castle. The room was reasonably clean when we arrived the staff at the front did the job without much fuss. The fireplace didn't work and there was no conditioner in the shower so we had to call down about that and the woman at the front didn't seem all that thrilled that we had called down twice. Then the room wasn't cleaned all that well the next day and we were left with no clean towels. Decent stay not a masterpiece by any stretch. read more

After looking through a few Groupons I came across one to stay here and because my friend and I had never even actually heard of Morro Bay we thought it would be fun to explore a new part of CA. We found The Masterpiece Hotel to be a very cute and clean boutique hotel. I loved the art all over the hotel and found the overall feeling of the hotel to have an old Hollywood charm. Our room was very spacious and we really enjoyed the fact that we had Direct tv, being a small town there is not too much to do in the evenings, so it was great to be able to relax in the hotel and watch some of our favorite shows. We made good use of the spa, we also enjoyed the breakfasts and cheese and wine in the evening. I would definitely recommend this hotel. read more

Booked this place for New Years for $108. I think it was a steal. Super clean room! We got there late but just in time to enjoy their reception of wine and cheese. You might want to bring your own soap and hair shampoo. They only have dispensers. Breakfast consisted of cereal, waffles, boiled eggs and juice. Walking distance to the downtown bars. The staff was friendly. I wouldn't mind staying here again. read more

This was a wonderful little motel with ocean view. Unfortunately I'm headed back to Riverside from Sacramento on a business trip and I was looking for somewhere quick and affordable to spend the night what a surprise. I was greeted by the friendly Ladies at the front desk at 10 pm the room was clean obviously non-smokers, the antiques in the room and the whole vibe was awesome my wife and I had a wonderful night great morning and free breakfast. unfortunately did not have time to stay and really enjoy the amenities. a bargain for the price why spend $200 + a night elsewhere everything you need is right here I have to figure out an excuse now to come back read more

My fellow reviewers must be easily impressed. The crackers, cheese, and wine were Ritz, cheddar, and two buck Chuck. The breakfast was the worst excuse for "continental." I am willing to give the place three stars for one reason only . . . the bed. It was incredibly comfortable for a hotel bed. Unfortunately, not much sleep occured in my ground floor room due to the headlights flashing into my room as late check-ins arrived, the creaky floors of the hallway and second floor rooms, and the rattling plumbing. They claim the place was renovated. My guess is it was just re-decorated. At least that was done well. If you must stay there, DEMAND a second floor room, find a glass of wine elsewhere, and have breakfast at Carla's Country Kitchen. Oh, and maybe, bring ear plugs. read more

Great place to stay if you are in Morro Bay, or just passing through. Very clean rooms and common areas. The jacuzzi and room was really great. The staff was extremely nice and helpful, even provided walking directions around town. Morro Bay has a trolley that picks up and drops off at the hotel for those of you who would rather not walk. We spent three nights at the Masterpiece and had a wonderful time. All of the staff were friendly and very helpful. We have stayed in many hotels and I was impressed with the little things most properties overlook such as detailed local restaurant information and a user guide to the television. The room was very nice with a balcony and had plenty of room. The hallways are nicely decorated and are very quite. Prior to making reservations, I checked out some reviews and a few negative ones, which I found unfounded: Street Noise: Yes, there is some street noise in the bay facing rooms, but that happens at most hotels in Morro Bay. Almost all motels are located on the two main drags that are quite busy during regular business hours and traffic / pedestrian noise is common. I didn't think that the street noise was a problem. We slept rather well. Continental Breakfast was terrible: Perhaps the reviewers are confused with the term, but the breakfast served was better than most. Delicate pastries, hot waffles and fresh fruit are not common to most Continental Breakfasts as they were here. I gave the Hotel Five Stars when it's compared to the other hotel / motels in Morro Bay. All in all, we really enjoyed our stay here and really recommend The Masterpiece Hotel. read more

First impression was pretty good. Boy behind the desk was very helpfull, the room was spacious and neat. But then when we went to wash our clothes, left to unpack and after the desk employee told us he would keep an eye open for us, the hotel closed the door of the washing room. Even after calling the nightmanager no one could/would let us in to get our belongings. Wich, as I told the nightmanager, caused a pretty big problem for us. Seems like such a small thing to help us with but nothing was possible. Hopefully this will change in the future. We're not staying here anymore. read more

Awesome place next to beach. Room are surprisingly big. They have in house jacuzzi which is nice. Free breakfast, yeah... my bad we didn't book the suite. Still room are still great. Service was superb. Receptionist/manager is amazing and she helped us from every request with smile. That makes it great. I would definitely recommend this to fellow commuters. read more

My husband and I got bed bugs from this hotel. Called the hotel on 5-28-14 at 9 am to speak to a manger and told Edward what happened, he even called back to get my last name and what room I stayed in and Gill would call me back. My wife and I have been coming to Morro Bay every year from San Diego since 2004. And we stay at the Masterpiece every time but once. Consistent throughout the years. Service always professional and courteous. Rooms always clean. Free wine, cheese and cracker happy hour since I can remember. Decent continental breakfast. Huge indoor hot tub and most rooms have a balcony. Never one complaint in all these years. Think that's lucky? No way, it's called consistent service. The one and only time we stayed down the street was our bad Morro Bay experience. Sure, it's an older hotel and some rooms are more dated than others, but it's not a luxury resort or new, soooo. Just got back after we took our 6 yr old with us this time and it was another perfect stay. I refuse to believe some of the 1 star complaints on here. Those type of people find the bad in everything, especially posts AND some of the 1 star posters have nothing but 1 star posts on EVERY place they review. Lame read more

Great hotel with lots of art nestled in downtown Morro Bay. We stayed in the king jacuzzi suite and they offer both military and AAA discounts here. The rooms are very large and decorated with style. Our room even had a fireplace in it. Only downfall was the AC was unable too cool our room down. At night we were ok but the morning started to heat up a lot. read more

Worst place I've ever stayed. Where do I begin?!? Don't bother calling the front desk from your room. They won't answer. But if you call from your cell they answer within 2 rings. Our room had trash on the floor from the previous person and wet spots on the carpet. The paint job is incomplete obviously two colors on the wall. The room was NOT properly clean with obvious "stuff" on the toilet seat. And the maid took a robe hanging on a chair with personal property in the pocket and no one cared. Literally they said I'll call you if we find anything, then nothing. Fireplace only works when it wants and doesn't actually give off heat unless you stand nearly in it. Memory foam bed which is hard as a rock. Spent a hr trying to find a position which didn't hurt. Even with a groupon this wasn't worth it I rather stay in a motel six. Normally I try to stay positive but the only positive I have is that I'm going home in the morning. Even with complaining multiple times no one here seems to care that their service is sub par. read more

Went here as a valetine's day getaway with their promotional special, customer service was fantastic and the front desk receptionist Michaela was very friendly and accommodating. We had gotten the la bahia queen suite and it was absolutely gorgeous with the fireplace and a swiveling TV. It was very quiet and the downstairs spa is beautiful and big. I give 4 stars as there really are no 5 star hotels in Morro Bay if you want walking distance. Check in staff was awesome, no bell hop if you have issue carrying your luggage up stairs. The rooms are clean and spacious. There is no ac but most hotels and businesses dont have ac in Morro Bay, i was there when record high temperatures so it was a little uncomfortable. They advertise wine and cheese from 5 to 7 but really only 5 to 6. Their wine was cheap liter bottles and no red. Two whites and a light zin. They should have a standard cab as well. I would stay there again, mostly because of location. read more

Charming, antique-y feel, this hotel is almost everything I ever wanted. We arrived late, but no worries, we called ahead and they left our key in a lock box outside. As the attendant heard us getting our key she kindly propped the front door so we could easily enter. Our room was spacious, well furnished, complete with a sliding glass door, ceiling fan, and balcony. Because Morro Bay was experiencing unusually warm weather we were slightly uncomfortable since rooms are not air conditioned. No pool but spacious spa in a private, unique Roman/Greek-inspired room with pillars and tiled mural. Free breakfast was offered, but was pretty limited. Dining area does have a beautiful view through its large windows. Hungry Fisherman Restaurant is right around the corner within walking distance and offers country-style breakfast options. Artwork throughout the hotel is great, and they have a fantastic guide book to the area, hotel, etc in each room. Copies of all informational materials are available to take with you. The front desk receptionist even gave me free stamps for my postcards. Things we didn't use but were available were free wine and cheese 5-7pm in the lobby and laundry facilities. read more

This place is pretty decent. It's not at the very top level of hotels, but for a mid-priced hotel, it is quite good. The rooms are clean, and have a lot of nice features. Balconies, fireplaces, etc. They have a really cool Spa downstairs, with cool tile, artwork, etc. Very nice. The only creepy thing is how many security cameras they have installed everywhere. You would assume that once you get to a certain price level, you don't have to worry about the guests misbehaving! The breakfast is also pretty good. If you want a pretty nice hotel in Morro bay, this one is worth trying. read more

Masterpiece Hotel saved me when I was looking for a room at the last minute Sunday of Labor Day Weekend. They gave me a great deal on their last room, which ended up being a King Deluxe with a fireplace and a balcony. The balcony had a nice view of the top of Morro Rock and was lovely for watching the sunset. The decor in the room was pretty basic except for the couple pieces of art that I loved. The room was clean and had everything I needed - soft towels, hair dryer, ceiling fan and heater, lots of outlets, mini fridge, coffee, microwave. It was also located a short walk from the embarcadero and lots of great bars and restaurants. Also didn't hurt that the front desk guy was really cute and friendly. I would definitely stay here again. read more

I have never had such a rude welcome to a hotel. The woman working the evening shift at reception criticized me for not booking directly through the hotel and accused me of trying to get away with not paying for an upgrade. On the hotel's end of the reservation, it showed that I booked for 3 people and when I arrived, we were given a room with 1 king bed. I asked for 2 beds and was told that it's not included. I've never heard of being charged for an upgrade for a place for 3 people to sleep when my reservation was for 3 people. I was not provided with any information about the amenities of the hotel. Fortunately, there was an informative packet of information in the room. The hotel is spacious and has a good location. The breakfast was excellent and included waffles, eggs, cereal, pastries, etc. In the evening, there was a wine and cheese bar. The beds were comfortable and room included a microwave and refrigerator. The carpet is very worn and badly stained. Jo, who worked the day shift during our stay was exceptionally helpful, courteous, and professional. read more

I have traveled across the U.S. many times. I frequent Morro Bay 5 or 6 times a year and have for the last 15 years. I have stayed at almost every place available. This hotel has the finest staff members I have ever dealt with in ALL my travels. They are courteous and respectful. The grounds and the rooms are spotless. The beds,bedding and linens are all first class, And the spa is beautiful. It may be an older hotel, But it is in superb condition. It was my first time at the Masterpiece. I will not consider any other hotels while staying in Morro Bay on my return visits. This place was fantastic.They have gained me as A customer for life. I am not posting this because I was given any special perks, I watched their interactions with other customers and they were all treated as well as my Grandaughter and I were treated. Really enjoyed this lovely little hotel. Clean rooms, friendly staff, and art all over the place. Decorated in a way that makes you feel like you're at home. Cheese, crackers, and wine from 5-7pm every night. An adequate work out room, a huge hot tub, and free brekkie. Lots of channels on cable. Just a couple blocks from the shore & all the shops/restaurants. Plus, we walked in off-season around dinner time on a weekend, and they were willing to negotiate the rate. Just one downside: no HDTV. Overall, I'd recommend staying here. read more

Spend the Christmas holiday here Dec 24-26 2015 & had the best time. The weather was perfect & with this hotels location we had the best stay. The hotel could not have been any more perfect. From the friendly staff service, to the perfect King deluxe room with a fireplace and balcony, to the amazing large warm spa. Besides, the place was so clean & impressive from the beginning of checking in. I would recommend this hotel to anyone. We will be returning again, even just to hang out at the hotel while enjoying the stay in Morro Bay. Just loved everything. read more

I booked this hotel through hotels.com, for whom I also have the need to write a review. My husband and I were talking my daughter to tour colleges. I was first trying to find a hotel for a Cal Poly tour. I found a rate of $240 to be acceptable for this area and chose the "Masterpiece" . I specified "late check in" and that there would be three of us. We arrived at a few minutes after 11, the parking lot was full. The lobby was locked, luckily there was a gentleman whose wife was letting him in because he was locked out. I went into the lobby and there was a number to call the night manager. I called the number and was told our key was in a lockbox outside. It was, thankfully and after trying to make the sure the doorknob was aligned properly, we were in our room about 11:45. We took our luggage up the stairs and walked into a stifling hot room with one bed and a large chair. I called the night manager again and told her that I had booked a two bed room. She said that since I booked through Expedia (although it was hotels.com) they couldn't guarantee the bed count when booked through a third party. She called us back and said that maybe the large chair in our room was a pull out bed. It was not and she apologized because the hotel was full. After figuring something out for sleeping, we finally went to bed, turned on the TV and it turned on but did not function, we just went to sleep, tired anyway. I used the bathroom in the middle of the night and it overflowed. After cleaning that up, I went to sleep. We went downstairs at about 7 and again, no one behind the counter and the gate closed. We walked around and looked for a bathroom and waited at the counter for someone to show up and they did as others were showing up to set for breakfast. We let him know about the overflow and he said he'd let maintenance know, maintenance did not show up for two hours, so the three of us had to keep going to the lobby to use the bathroom. This is not a $240 a night hotel. The only reason I am giving them one star is because, even though we did not partake of the breakfast, it seemed well presented. The staff was definitely not rude, but something seems neglected and lacking. read more

Only good thing about this hotel is the hot tub. They made mistakes 3x on our reservations; instead of the promised king with fireplace room we were given a standard king room. Bed in the room was so bad I had to sleep on the floor on an air mattress I brought, my son shared the king bed with my husband because the trundle bed was even worse than the bed, screen door on the balcony was broken and with no AC it was very hot, drawers in the bathroom broken, the shower knob broke when I tried to change the temperature, balcony chairs so bad and filthy we didn't sit in them. They charged more than was quoted....very pretty hotel on the outside but it is run down and really terrible on the inside of the rooms. read more

This is a charming old hotel. The rooms were nice and plenty of hot water However, the included breakfast was terrible. There were few choices and the pastries looked microwaved stuff you would find in a gas station mini mart. The coffee was also weak. No elevator and no air conditioning rounds out the picture. read more

Kai was on in the evening hours and made us feel right at home. These two are a true joy, salt of the earth! Very nice, clean and comfortable! The front desk is very helpful. You can walk down to the marina where there are plenty of restaurants and shops. In the evenings there is a wine and cheese reception and a good breakfast in the morning where you can make your own waffles. It's a little more than a continental breakfast. The jacuzzi is indoors and really big! There is also a small gym. We paid under $100 per night for all of this. We were very pleased! read more

We stayed here on our honeymoon, and loved it!! I was nervous to stay in a place that wasn't a chain I was familiar with, but my husband wanted to try places that were unique to the town we were in. It was one of the best ideas! Our room was clean, had a fireplace and balcony. We had a room with a king size bed and had plenty of room and a couple of comfy chairs. The location was great - it was close enough to walk to downtown and see the ocean and hear the sea lions from our room. We did not take part of the breakfast or happy hour, so I can't really comment on that. Everything else about our experience was great. I really hope we can make it back someday for an anniversary. read more
