This hotel was a lot of fun! My boyfriend and I stayed here for a weekend in the middle of January. The place was nowhere close to booked so the lady at the front desk offered us a free upgrade which was very nice. The room had an electric fireplace and a great view of the bay. The complimentary wine bar was ok, lots of cheese and crackers and large bottles of wine. We couldn't complain for complimentary. I would definitely go back here. Its a great find! read more

This place has the worst customer service I ever experienced The receptionist is rude and she would rather study then help she told us god dammit when she didn't agree with us and wasn't afraid to say other swear words. This hotel is very clean and in a safe area, but that's all it has going for it! The front desk is often unstaffed, there is no elevator, and the door handle on our room was broken which made it difficult to get into our room. When we finally got into our room, there was no air conditioning, the ceiling fan was not working, and all that was available was a tiny desktop fan. The bed covers, while thin, are so warm as to be uncomfortable. The room was advertised as having two queen beds but the beds were barely full-sized and the mattresses were terrible! The one was so worn out that it dipped in the center so we switched to the other bed and while that mattress seemed newer it was very hard! The switch plate in the bathroom was broken, the internet connection was terrible, and there were no amenities to speak of! We're sitting here now waiting for someone to return to the front desk so we can get them to let us in to our room! It's safe to say we won't be back!!! read more

A cozy, comfortable stay. I appreciated the front desk's hospitality, from the nightly wine and cheese replenishments to the recommendations for restaurants and walking/driving directions. They also directed us to Montanas de Oro, an amazing state park, and a fabulous hike. Great location, easy to walk to downtown Morro Bay. Ok place to stay: staff was really nice, location is walking distance to the Embarcadero, room was big and quiet, fireplace was cute and worked. However, bed was pretty hard - not very comfortable- and the breakfast was pretty bad too for the price of the room - motel quality - but oh well - at least I ate some (cold) hard boiled eggs for the protein! Yes this is an older hotel but we drove around the area before choosing it and all the hotels in this beach town are a little older and small. I am very happy with our choice to spend the night here. The front desk staff was so nice and helpful and at check out the lady running the desk gave us some really great trips on our drive up to San Fran to stop and see. The complimentary wine and cheese in the evening is a nice touch (we arrived just in time for it!) and the free b-fast was appreciated. All your pastries and breads, oatmeal and a waffle maker. They have good deals online and were nice enough to price match so I was happy to book thru them instead of a online deal site. It's worth it to upgrade to the fireplace room! read more

Interesting place. First let me start by saying I would stay there again. However it needs some Maintenance which I guess adds to the charm of the place. The toilet was not bolted to the floor properly and was rocking around, and the key lock worked about 50% of the time. Either we did not figure it out, or there is no air conditioning. Its a little different then the regular big chains, and goes for a style. There is lots of art hanging, and lucky us, we had our kids with us, so they did get a free lesson on naked art! The double bed room had a good size for our family of four. The staff was very friendly and helpful. As mentioned, I would stay there again. it took about 10 minutes to walk down to the waterfront. read more

Stayed here for a long weekend early October and it was ok for the price. I booked pretty last minute so there were not a lot of hotel choices. The worst part of the experience was that this hotel does NOT have air conditioning. It was unusually hot when I was there so the room was super hot and uncomfortable---even with the ceiling fan. They gave us a small fan to put in our room in addition, but it did not help much. Also, since we had to sleep with the patio door open, the noise from the streets was a problem. The breakfast buffet left much to be desired---but at least it gives you the basics. Wine and cheese was a nice treat in the evening---found myself wishing that they would put some of that cheese out for breakfast. I'm giving 3 stars for the super nice staff, cleanliness of the rooms and the indoor Jacuzzi (which was nice to relax in after a long day). read more

This is a very nice hotel. Wine & cheese in the evening was excellent and breakfast was great (eggs, waffles, etc). Room was large and comfortable. Only complaint on the room was that the screen door lock did not latch. We were on the ground floor. No air conditioning. Was hot wanted air, but leaving the screen unlocked worried us (we're from the Bay Area, anything can happen), so we stayed hot. That being said, we were there last weekend for the Kite Festival. When we checked in they wanted a $50USD deposit on the room. We're two seniors with fixed incomes. No credit cards. I used my debit Visa. Was surprised to get a text alert that my balance was low. I checked, hold for 50.00 was put on my account, leaving me with $16 left on my end of month buffer. Just in case, money so I don't overdraft. It was the weekend and pending till the next business day. We checked out Sunday before noon. I asked when does the hold come off. The guy at the desk said in about 24 hours. Ok, we went home. Next day Monday, hold is still there, getting worried. Tuesday It was still there. I called the hotel and was told that it was reversed Sunday. I said no it isn't reversed, she said take it up with my bank. Called BofA all panicked (I have a panic disorder, doesn't take much to set me off) Lady at the bank said let me look. She said well the hotel DID NOT reverse the charge, it looked like they were just not putting it through. Didn't fall off till late Wednesday. NOT OK. Hold goes on in a second. The hold on that amount stays till reversed (next business day) or charged or falls off (3 days). I was given the wrong information and made for a few days of panic for me. Next time Masterpiece Reverse the charge at checkout or tell the truth that you're just going to let it time out. Not like we're college kids on break going to trash your room. read more

The service was great, the room was well maintained with a lovely view, and the rates were affordable. Found this place on Groupon & since my boyfriend & I decided to take a last minute vacation up the coast, it was a good place for us! Although there were small things like a broken door handle and a musty smell at times. It was still very comfortable and clean! Loved the bed & rotating television with many channels to enjoy :) loved that there was tea & coffee & all the different type of lighting in the room itself. Overall it was a good experience staying here & the customer service was excellent! We forgot somethings in the hotel after we checked out & thankfully we were still in the area when they called us about them! We highly appreciated this gesture from the hotel! Just stayed here for a couple nites on a staycay & the place was incredible. Their Continental breakfast foods were more than ample, Happy Hour was great with wine, cheese & crackers, and Roman jacuzzi was absolutely wonderful. Had a good size room, larger than many I've stayed in. The staff members were friendly & helpful. Just cannot praise this place enough and would definitely stay here again. It is centrally located and within walking distance of the Embarcadero, restaurants, shops & the downtown area. Great price for all the amenities one gets & well kept. I booked the hotel for a short stay. We drove up early on a Thursday for a concert and I called and asked for an early check in. The man said the room would be ready between 1:00 and 1:30. When we got there shortly before 2 he said the room would be ready at 3. I explained that I had called ahead and he just shrugged and said it wasn't ready. Very unprofessional. They had my cell phone number and could have called to say the room wasn't ready. They also do not have an elevator. When I booked the room I said I had a handicap veteran staying with me but there was no mention of a lack of elevator and we were sent to the second floor. There was a first floor but they could not accommodate a room change. I am 7 months pregnant and had to lug the bags upstairs myself. The room was clean and the beds comfortable. I would not recommend or stay here again. read more

Absolutely LOVE this hotel and will be going back! Booked through groupon for a two night stay. The hotel was built in the 80s and stays true to the vintage. The entire hotel, although not large, is very beautiful and unique in design. There is artwork throughout the halls and multiple pieces in the rooms, you can take a self-guided art tour throughout the hotel. They offer wakeup call and dry cleaning services. There is an onsite laundry facility, gorgeous spa, and small-- but cute-- fitness center. Across from morro rock, and at the center of the city, it is wonderfully located. The staff is so nice and informative. I booked a Hearst Castle package through them which covered a tour for two people, and two tickets to a 45 minute theater showing. They also offer complementary cheese and wine each night, as well as a cute continental breakfast. I stayed in a standard room, but was lucky to also have a balcony. It was super adorable, the deluxe rooms must be even greater! I stayed in room 101. If you're an art fanatic, or one who loves history--or art history-- I definitely recommend staying here and visiting Hearst Castle. You will not be disappointed! read more

Have to give them 5 out of 5 because the hotels/motels I have stayed at recently have fallen under the 1 star category. I will start with the whole room smelled CLEAN!! Big plus in my book. Room had a microwave and a mini fridge than was already cold when we checked in! I'm use to having to plug the darn thing in myself and wait. Anyways, they have wine and cheese in the afternoons and breakfast in the mornings. Not great wine, but its something, and they chill is which was cool. They had a good variety of cheeses which surprised me. The breakfast was great, even had a waffle maker :) Customer service was excellent, and the location was good. FREE WIFI! In the end, after our stay in El Mirado Penthouse Suite (!), we were more taken by this motel's charming peculiarities than disappointed by the outdated amenities. Up front, the negatives: The walls are thin, the toilet cheap, the views lacking, the Wi-Fi slow, and the water pressure poor. However, the staff was attentive, and so many little things (spacious balcony with a mini succulent garden! robes! jacuzzi tub! plentiful towels and bath liquids! staircase inside the room! fireplace, easy chairs, wine and cheese! detailed neighborhood guide! book and gameshelf in the hallway!) worked together for a delightful little stay. The weekday price was just right for the service offered. If we have the pleasure of enjoying Morro Bay again, the Masterpiece (why do they call it a) Motel will be our first choice. read more

We had a great experience staying at the Masterpiece Motel. We loved the exterior Spanish Revival design with the turrets and tasseled awnings. The high-end pillow-top mattress was an unexpected delight and was one of the most comfortable beds we've ever slept in. They have free wine & cheese in the evening and a free continental breakfast in the morning; both were great and reduced the need to go off site to eat. It was an easy 5-10 minute walk to the embarcadero for the waterside shops and restaurants. Michael was in charge of the front desk while we were there and he made us feel exceptionally welcome. We will return to the Masterpiece Motel. read more
