My coworkers and I go on travel to Cleveland every now and then, and Masthead has become our favorite go-to spot when we're in town. The pizza is always tasty and we enjoy the unique options available (such as the Reuben pizza). Really though, we go there for the beer! I like to get a flight or two so I can sample all the different variations. I was there last week where they had plenty of winter/holiday seasonal options that were quite tasty. I ended up bringing home a few 4-packs to go. The setup is nice. They have plenty of large tables for large groups and smaller tables for smaller parties. No servers, you order from the bar and get your drinks then and there, and your food when notified by a remote device. I love that they have water handy throughout the dining area so I never have to ask or wait. It's a pretty chill and relaxed atmosphere. I like to venture around Cleveland to different restaurants and breweries, but this place has become our main no-brainer stop each time we travel. read more

Masthead was a solid brewery with solid food. We ordered a veggie pizza, which was sizable and adequate for two people to share. It is thin crust, and I was pleased with the turnout considering they weren't famous for it. The mushrooms however did look like they were canned, so I wouldn't recommend coming to Masthead for your best Cleveland thin crust experience, but if you want to snack on something while enjoying some beers, it was adequate. I'm not usually the biggest fan of IPAs, but I thought they had solid options. One of the beers that offered a smooth silky finish mouth-feel really delivered, I was surprised with how well it was done! I'm no beer expert but I've been on a few tours and tried a number of flights and was pretty happy with the options here. Just had the worst experience at Masthead. Waitstaff and security were super friendly. We are from out of town and decided to check out the bar. Unbeknownst to us, we had wandered into a space reserved for a private party. The manager (I assume) came over to us and said someone told him we were eating their food. Of course we did not. He explained that it was a private party so we had to go to another part of the bar. We decided to leave and went to the bar to pay our tab. The "manager" rudely told us we couldn't be there because it was are served space. First of all, we never ate from their buffet, and we're only standing there for three or four minutes. Second of all, a much more professional, courteous way to handle that situation, than to tell us we had to leave. I really like this brewery! To start with it's MASSIVE with a ton of seating & the service is great! I love the line system they have if you're not sitting at the bar. Their food is awesome! I visited Masthead Brewing Co., on a cold and windy weeknight evening in early March 2017 to sample Masthead's brews. I had to park a couple of blocks down on a side street - as there is no parking in front of the brewery. The place is massive on the inside. And there were a lot of customers inside the brewery that evening - not sure where everyone else parks... I sat at the bar and introduced myself to the barkeep - I ended up having two flights so I could taste most of the beers: A Few Good Acres Pale Ale (5.8% ABV) IPA (6.8% ABV) Midwest Red IPA (6.3% ABV) Poblano Chili Stout (7.3% ABV) Blonde Ale (5.5% ABV) Brute Force DIPA (8.7% ABV) Stout (7.3% ABV) Coffee Stout (7.3% ABV) Some of their beers have rather odd names - in that no creativity went into naming the beer - such as "IPA," and "Blonde Ale," and "Stout." I remarked on this to the barkeep - he indicated I was not the first person to make that observation. I mean - c'mon - you are in control of the brewery - name your beers! Not just some of them! Anyhow, I enjoyed most of the beers. The "IPA" listed as "IPA #1" on Untappd was good, as was the "A Few Good Acres" Pale Ale, and all the Stouts, including the Poblano Chili Stout. Service was good. For me Masthead is 3.5 stars, but since you can't do half I just rounded up. I've been here a couple of times now and it's a decent brewery/place to have drinks and food with friends while downtown (good luck finding free street parking after 6pm). I'm not a huge fan because to me it is just so loud inside even when less than half-filled, this is probably because of the huge open air warehouse type setup, barely anything to absorb the noise. Another thing to note is that you serve yourself here, as in you go to the bar and stand in a line to order your beer and food. You get your beer then have to go over to the kitchen to grab your food and plates/silverware/etc. If you want water you go over to a water jug to get it. They do have someone who goes around and takes away the dirty dishes. Seating is communal at large picnic tables, this leads to a casual atmosphere. *Pint of Hayride $6 - I really enjoyed this pumpkin ale. *Beer Sampler $10 - Jalapeno Hazy, Apiary Ale, Abuela's Imperial Chocolate Porter, Mango something. Abuela with it's very slight kick of heat was my favorite. I actually think it would be better with more heat. I was charged an extra $1 for having a barrel aged beer in the sampler. *Dates $7 - Only get 4 of them but they are chubby - stuffed full of goat cheese with honey and pistachios on top. Tasty. *Cherry Peppers $8 - These stuffed peppers with a little heat were also pretty tasty. *BBQ Pork Pizza $12 - Not bad, but not great. *Nueske Bacon Pizza $12 - Not bad, but not great. So Neapolitan-inspired pizzas are not my favorite. I'm more of a Detroit style pizza kind of eater. Just too much dry crust and light toppings. My friends like that I don't eat the crust though because it means they get it. I do think $12 is a good price for these pies. I've tried the Reuben and the Prosciutto as well, but so far the only one I really liked was the Bianco. If you've never been then definitely check this place out and make sure to get your Cleveland Brewery Passport stamp. Our first stop while visiting Cleveland had to be a craft brewery, and no better place to chose than Masthead Brewing. Prior to coming here, I did my research and this was the place I wanted to stop at the most, to try their beers. My girlfriend and I really liked the table seating setup they had, for both the inside and outside. Once we were seated, we both ordered a beer flight, with 4 different beers in each flight. I tried to try a bunch of different ones in the sampler, as then I can get a large glass of my favorite one. I'm an IPA type of guy, so our flights were heavy on IPA different choices. The jalapeno haze, witness me double, and last case scenario, were all excellent ipas. I enjoyed every one of them so much. The coffee stout was very strong and delicious too. Honestly, every beer we had was amazing here. I couldn't just pick 1 as my favorite, but the last case scenario may have been the winner. After another round of beers, we then ordered the everything pretzel to have, which came with 3 dips. Loved that it had 3 different dip choices. The pretzel itself was tasty and delicious. We finished the whole thing up while drinking the rest of our beers. Overall, I loved the craft brewery and highly recommend it to everyone. I am glad I got to stop here. read more

We ordered inside , which was lively and buzzing with people. We ordered a sour beer and the cider on their menu - both of which were amazing! We were eating outside and the sweetness of our sour beer attracted quite a few critters, though i was only halfway through my beer. The server was so gracious and actually poured out the ruined beer and gave me a new one. Amazing service and beer - a great combination. I should also mention that their pizzas are top notch. I'm honestly sitting here at lunch wishing I was able to eat the Reuben pizza right now. This pizza is the things dreams are made of. I've tried a few of mastheads pizzas and none of them disappoint. Their beer is also always great and I love the selection in the taproom. They always have a great selection of styles (and guest beers) to keep everyone in your party happy. Know there is communal seating which sometimes is packed and hard to find a spot to sit. Also know they have designated "lanes" at the bar to order from when you sit at the community tables - which is honestly an awesome idea. We stopped in at 6pm on a Friday night and it was crowded but we were served super efficiently... Except for our pizzas that effectively took and 50-70 minutes to find us. A member of the staff came up to us, looked at our pager, picked it up, said nope, not the one I was looking for, and walked away. Apparently this was them "parading" our pizzas up and down the aisles looking for us... but I sincerely think a mistake was made somewhere with the staff. I really appreciate when staff admits to their mistakes as opposed to blaming it on the patrons. We did get a round of drinks comped and as seen above finally got to enjoy our pizza but I felt the whole interaction was a little distasteful. I stopped here on a Fall tuesday evening before a concert at the (somewhat) nearby House of Blues. I thought it was a little closer of a walk than it was! But it wasn't bad on a nice evening. The beers were great! I had a flight and I recommend trying as many as you can, because they're doing something right. It's the service that left something to be desired. They were not very busy, steady...but not busy. But the bartender was quick to take my order and get my out of there without much interaction. Once I had my flight, I sat down and was non-existent to the staff from that point on. They tend to stay behind the bar and not venture out, evidenced by the several tables that were not cleaned up. I would go here again for the beer, but I won't expect any service outside of someone handing me my beer and taking my money. They have sectioned off areas of the bar where you order your food and drinks. The beer selection was pretty good, they had some lighter options for before a hot evening at the game. We decided to they the bacon ranch pizza which was delicious (I had them put the siracha cream topping on the side) and made fresh in their giant pizza oven. Food: Of the pizza I've had in cleveland so far, I might say that masthead is my favorite! One pizza is typically good for one person. They're artisan style pizzas, with amazing ingredient combos that I would never think of myself. My favorite is the mushroom, the flavors are so amazing, I could probably eat two of them. But honestly, you cannot go wrong with any of their pizzas!! Everything is super fresh, their dough is the right texture, and they cook it to perfection. We went during the lunch rush, and we only waited about 10 minutes for our pizzas! They also offer sandwiches and salads if pizza isn't your thing. Of course, they also have beer, but I'm not much of a beer drinker. However, the people I went with all got one of their house beers and enjoyed them. It's a one stop shop!! Atmosphere: this is the reasoning for my four stars and not 5. The location is near downtown cleveland, meaning that there isn't as much to do immediately around the brewery. They also brew their beers essentially in front of you, which is cool, but the restaurant always tends to smell a little hoppy. Could spoil a get together potentially. Try to sit outside if you can! They also have huge garage doors in the front, so if it's a nice day, you probably won't have this issue! the interior is like any brewery - fairly industrial, a couple of cool finishes, and not the best acoustics. It can get loud with a lot of people inside. No matter what though, I will always come anytime for that pizza!!! Ordering: for ordering, it's similar to Panera. you come inside and look over a menu while you wait in line to order (if there is a line). There is a small queue area at the bar with a cashier and pipe guards. Once you order, you get a buzzer, and sit wherever you'd like. Super fun new brewery (new to me anyway) in the heart of CLE. Man, I can only imagine the trouble my friends and I would have gotten into if we'd had all these options when at CSU! Love the huge open ware-house feel with the metal pips for table legs. Picnic style-tables (German bier-haus feel) line the inside and traditional picnic tables are outside. The place is LOUD! With those high ceilings, cement floors, and loads of open space, be prepared to yell your mouth off at your friends. I appreciate the attempts to dampen the noise with the carpet squares on the bottoms of the tables and can't imagine how much noisier the place would be. Garage doors may or may not be up. I prefered the up position but even in the steamy weather the had them mostly down the time I was there. I got the pilsner and it was ok. Not probably something I'd order again, but not bad. The ginormous "everything" pretzel was SUPER salty and I could have done with less salt and more other seasoning. The "sauces" pimento cheese, stadium mustard, and a seeded mustard were "ok" but nothing to write home about (save the stadium mustard which, well, let's be honest is a food-group in an of itself). I would definitively go back and try it again if I'm back home and in the area. It probably wouldn't be my first choice based on my 1 beer trial, but the atmosphere is fun and lively and worth checking out. read more
