We came in for Father's Day. The waitress gave us the brunch menu which cost 42.00 instead of explaining there was an option. It wasn't until I asked the waitress and she still wasn't clear. I ordered the shrimp and grits. The grits were cold. The waitress took it back and gave me Luke warm grits. She never apologized for the mishap. Matchbox is a great addition to Silver Spring. I tried the Rockville location with a family friend and my parents several years ago either when I was a student at American University or was interning for the summer. I enjoyed their Fire and Smoke Pizza but my parents found it too spicy. I was happy it was coming here and my fiancé and I loved the Fire and Smoke Pizza and have also enjoyed their unlimited Brunchbox and cheap drinks on weekend as well as their happy hour specials and rewards such as free birthday pizzas. When my dad was in town in June we chose to eat here after over a year of not eating here in person (ordered for carry out and delivery a couple times) and also knowing they also make some of our favorites from one of the best restaurants in the area, Milk and Honey. Interestingly, they do their brunch all day every day as well as Milk and Honey's brunch items. This may be due to the fact Eggspectations closed next door. With my dad we ordered the 14" Holy Grail Margherita Pizza as well as the RumChata French Toast and Deep Fried Salmon Hash from the Milk and Honey menu. The Milk and Honey items were good too but not quite as good as what we have ate at and ordered for delivery from the Beltsville location with the French Toast being the most impressive. For desert we shared 9 of the Donuts on the Matchbox menu and the Deep Fried Strawberry Shortcake Biscuits. The donuts were delicious but the biscuits were overcooked and disappointing, nothing like what we ate in Beltsville. Pre-Covid Matchbox was 5 Stars but due to the fact they did not have happy hour (but planned to resume soon) , Brunchbox (with cheap drinks), or the Beyond Sausage makes it not quite Five Stars. While I appreciate them introducing Milk and Honey to our neighborhood, I hope they can improve the consistency to make it closer to the food we have had from Beltsville. read more

My friends and met for brunch and wanted somewhere spacious and easy to get to. Matchbox certainly fit the bill, especially it's proximity to the Wayne parking garage. The place was hopping, which was a little surprising because DTSS seems kind of dead. I was hoping there would be a bit more space between diners, but because it is so large, and the booths are spacious, it didn't feel like I was breathing in other peoples' germs. In addition to their all-day, everyday brunch, they offer brunch items from the pop-up Milk & Honey Cafe...and whoa, did they look good. We all ended up ordering off that menu. My friends both got the deep-fried salmon hash, while I went for chicken and biscuits. Ok, do the wait was kind of atrocious, but that was perfectly ok because it gave us lots of time to catch up on all the gossip. And when the food finally came out...oh yeah!! The fried chicken was simply delicious, with perfect spices and a crunchy exterior. Honestly, it outshine somewhat dull scrambled eggs and an ok biscuit. But yay for really excellent fried chicken! My friends' dishes were kind of stunning - a huge chunk of deep fried salmon sitting prettily atop the hash. I've never actually heard of deep fried salmon, but it worked. We decided to try this local spot tonight for some quick drinks and food. We ordered the old bay wings. The seasoning was great, thought the wings a little dry and at $19 for 6 definitely not worth it. We were shocked that was the market price as indicated on the menu. Compared to other prices in local places this is pretty steep. The pizza was delicious. The crust was perfect, the sauce was sweet, and the cheese perfectly melted. Would definitely order other types. Bartenders were super attentive and friendly. read more

This location was fine for the first several months when it opened in Silver Spring. Now it is just terrible. I see that it went from being locally owned to bought by Thompson Hospitality. Obviously a typical Blackrock type of situation where they care about profits only and are cutting corners. Terribly overpriced. I am comfortable paying a lot for a good meal. For 30 dollars a pizza it shouldn't have 25 cents worth of cheese. Even paying extra for cheese still results in same sad amount. Literally, making a protein shake because I'm starving. read more

Worst brunch and dining experience I've had in the last 5 years across anywhere in the DMV. Our server, Miriam, was inattentive, distracted, seldomly checked on us during our entire brunch visit, and a huge let down. 3 of our guests didn't get their food or drinks for about an hour. Our server disappears for 30 minutes and only comes back after a hostess goes looking for her and is shocked food and drinks didn't come out. Checking in on your table and not disappearing for 30 mins would have been helpful. She returns from eating food as she's clearly still chewing food. She then claims that brunch time is busy and some tickets may have gotten lost. Yes, but brunch time is expected to be busy and you should check in on your table to make sure everyone has their meals and drink. Every table around us got their food and drinks quickly. Not an excuse to blame a brunch time rush, especially since the restaurant started clearing out. One of our guests had a baby who asked for a high chair at the reservation, when they arrived, and also asked the server after they ordered food. Never came out. Do not recommend this spot or the service. May reach out to my credit card company and file a service claim for the poor service. read more

Great service, great for kids, super nice staff, very accommodating. They have a nice patio out front as well, with heaters. Cocktails were really good, espresso martini from the brunch menu was great, the cider spritz was good just not very apple-y. Food was pretty good, got the burrata pizza which was really tasty but I wanted extra cheese-I think just their version of extra cheese is way less than mine. The arancini was ok-I asked ahead because I'm picky and was told it had the center of melty cheese but it did not-and that's ok if that's what you want. In this case, it was the cheese through-out, so probably my question was just answered wrong. The butternut squash salad was ok-the dressing was great, and the squash was really good, I guess it's the name of "squash salad" I thought it would be mostly squash with some other things. It was a salad with squash sprinkled on top. I'm just picky with menus and details. Giving this rating a 4 because I feel like the service could've been a bit better. I ordered the Mumbo Chicken Sandwich and it was goooood ! I also had the frozen margarita daiquiri drink it was too sweet, i wouldn't order it again. But I did have a lemon drop and that was just right. My two friends had the bottomless mimosas (this is where the 4 star ratings come in) the staff was not acting like they were bottomless... like not refilling them on time or anything, they had to staff know when they wanted more. Other than that, i would visit again. I also came early on a Thursday around 3 pm. Not sure on if that played a role. The ambiance is nice though, pretty casual and chill. read more

I haven't been here in years, and now I remember why. The staff is excellent, but the food is terrible. How do you mess up what you're known for? Please save your money I started with the crab soup. First off, it was incredibly salty--unbearably so--and it had an odd brownish color. Strange. Next was the pizza. I ordered The Pig, expecting a fully loaded pie with all kinds of meat. That didn't happen. The pizza was undercooked; I could tell as soon as it arrived. The middle was soggy, the ingredients were sparse, and they bizarrely put the ham under the cheese, which left it undercooked. Why would you do that? Meat placed that way will never cook properly. The execution was just poor. I only managed to eat a slice because I was starving and ended up taking the rest home to cook it properly myself. To top it all off, the service was painfully slow. They even brought out the appetizers and entrées at the same time. Again, Save your money and go elsewhere. Honestly, you'd probably be better off at Domino's on Georgia Ave. read more

First time at Matchbox, definitely be back. Stopped by with my wife for happy hour. We tried a variety of items. I opted for beer but the draft system was not up to par so I settled for bottled beer and my wife had a margarita. Says it was pretty good. We ordered the Drunken Meatballs (very good), Matchbox Smashburger ( comes as a double, very good), the Sticky Pork Ribs (fall off the bone good) and the chicken wings (very good and flavorful). When I say I regrate even stepping foot inside of this place, I mean it. What a waste of money, time and even consideration. HIDDEN FEES!!!! Yes, you read that right HIDDEN FEES!!! When I tell you I was upset and feel as if we were taken advantage of, and I wish I could just redo the night over and visited another restaurant. My self and my husband each ordered a Long Island Iced Tea, and do you know that they charged us for each ingredient. Yes, each ingredient and we did not order top shelf. Making a drink that normally cost around $11, to a whopping $21.50. They charged us $13.50 for Tito's vodka, $3 for Long Island Passion fruit mix and $5 for Long Island Iced Tea mix. Anyone who drinks knows that Long Island Ice Teas have multiple liquor in it. When I saw this extra charge and spoke to the manager about the extra fee's he became nasty and totally unprofessional. I hope that the business see's this entry, I am truly upset and feel that if you are going to charge anyone extra for each ingredient then they should be told and not surprised. Mind you I only drink Long Island Iced Teas and never seen anything as such. If you are going out for drinks don't visit this place, as you too will be surprised with hidden fees. read more

The reservation was for 9:30 this morning and the server was very nice while I waited for my friend to arrive and brought me the hot tea that I ordered. After my friend arrived, we ordered our food and started talking. The food was okay, some of it just didnt feel like it was seasoned. I'd never thought I would say this about my beloved Matchbox but what a big fat disappointment it was attempting to have a simple brunch!! We sat for almost ten minutes before even being greeted. We even stopped the manager to let him know but he was busy consistently seating other guests around us that sat there for a while as well. After being stopped he stated that they were short staffed and somebody would be right with us, but as a former hospitality professional for umpteen years I know that you shouldn't keep seating folks all willy nilly if the ones that have been sat haven't even been tended to. It simply adds others to a now seated anxious list. We finally ordered their janky mimosa deal that differs from all other Matchboxes. Other Matchboxes have a simple $25pp 2 hour limit bottomless mimosas while Silver Spring has a confusing $22 for a mimosa with $1 for each refill. How were the mimosas you ask? Who knows because they never came!! After the Cast Iron Cinnamon Rolls came as rock hard and cold as the cast iron that it was served in. That is when we had to go! We told the manager to cancel our order and he unapologetically said ok. We graciously took our $322 directly next door to Miss Toyas!! A great addition to the Silver Spring Town Center area. This restaurant space has exchanged hands several times and besides when it was Eggspectation....none of them have been as good except for this Matchbox. This was my second visit to this Matchbox location. My first visit was for a Sunday brunch with a couple of friends. At that time, we tried several tapas dishes, got Chicken & Waffles and I ordered the shrimp and grits! Everything was delicious, but the Shrimp & Grits were a highlight for sure. The brunch menu is a collaboration with the popular "Milk & Honey restaurant which is known for great breakfast and brunch fare...so no surprises here. My most recent visit was last night. We came here for some quick eats and drinks before heading to the nearby AMC movie theatre. The food and drinks did not disappoint. Our bartender, Geo, was attentive and made the drinks proper. The highlight of the night tho was a "create your own pizza" where we took a combination of their Matchbox Meat Pizza and combined it with Chicken, Bacon, & Spinach! One word....."Perfection!" No....two words...."HELLA+LICIOUS!" This pizza was so good....saucy, cheesy, and loaded with toppings. Matchbox delivered on our concoction that's for sure! Just a note to Matchbox....don't take my pizza idea and add all this creativity-deliciousness to your menu without some for of a kickback!! lol. Just kidding.....take it and run with it for others to enjoy....because it's just that darn good. We also went in on the Calamari which was cooked perfectly and served with a jalapeno jelly type sauce that was tasty. In all, a great visit and excellent service. Although the Capitol Hill - Matchbox location is my favorite of them all around the DMV, this one has been a sleeper and slowly about the take the number #1 spot. Dinner at Matchbox brought us to the Silver Spring location. We are not new to Matchbox, but this was our first time dining-in here. Upon arrival it was pretty quiet and not too busy. However, the front desk informed us it would be a 40 minute wait due to not having a reservation. The wife asked and we were able to sit in the bar area with the kids. Geo was one of the waiter/bartender. He immediately offered apps, recommended drafts, and spirits. Geo was very personable, which ran the bill up. Lol The wife went with a side car after Geo talked up his ability to make them. I ordered an amber draft and the kids had lemonade. The side car was wife-approved, my amber was cool, and the kid's lemonade was very sweet that they had to let the ice melt to tone down the sweetness. I didn't want to drink, which is why my her was just ok to me. The kids ordered an additional round of lemonades. For appetizer, we ordered calamari. The calamari came with what tested like a house tarter sauce. Some seafood cocktail sauce would have been perfect. The calamari was tender and lightly breaded. My son and I ordered the chimichurri steak frites, daughter ordered a pepperoni and sausage pizza, and wife ordered a ribeye steak with potatoes, and bacon wrapped asparagus. After we were winding down eating, Geo came over with dessert menus, and said, "Let me know if you want the donuts or (something else that I can't remember)." Although we were planning on ordering ice cream for the kids, we were thinking about something additional because of how smoothly Geo put the idea of desserts. When the bill came, the wife was shocked, but I'm like Russ Crowe in A Beautiful Mind. I already calculated how much it would cost to the whole dollar as soon as the wife asked the kids if they wanted steak, and my son responding emphatically with, "Yes!" We were greeted immediately by our server who took our drink order and shortly after she took our food order, she was very nice. Maybe we were just hungry but it seemed to take a long time for our food to come out. Once our food came out our server seemed to forget that we were here but once we flagged her down we got her attention. I ordered the Ribs which were very good, tasty and cooked right. I asked for extra BBQ Sauce to be cooked on the ribs but I didn't get that, I got sauce on the side which I had to ask for twice as thier ribs lacked sauce, it came with cornbread which was very moist, tasty and good. It also came with a side of cole slaw which was creamy but lacked the sweetness we like. My wife ordered The Apple and Pear Salad which was extremely good, in fact my wife ordered another one to to take home for lunch the next day. She also ordered the Chicken Alfredo which was good but needed more sauce as it was very dry. Good food, terrible service I made brunch reservations for me and my bestie here for a Saturday afternoon. We waited about 25-30 minutes for them to place our order and get initial drinks. Our server did not introduce themselves or check on us regularly. We had to ask for the manager who made excuses for them about being too shy and nervous. She then brought the server out for us to give constructive feedback and suggestions directly to them. It was just very odd to put your customers in the position to proper train your staff and give them best practices in service. The manager offered a free drink for the poor service but nothing changed - not a new server, not better service. We had empty water cups, extra plates sitting on the table from the lemon provided. Utensils and cups were dirty. To top it off, when we finally received the food order, it was incorrect. My friend enjoyed the food so we appreciated the chef, but it was the lack of detail from the service that made this experience very disappointing. Came here for happy hour. They have a pretty substantial menu for HH and many options to choose from. We had the spinach and artichoke dip. It came with plenty of chips, and was big enough for 2 people to share was a 5/5. The arancini and pretzel were also good. The pretzel was a little too crisp and dry and I would have liked it better with a mustard, but that is personal preference. Overall, a great place to dine. So this place is lovely. Nicely dimmed lighting, very romantic. Food: shrimp and grits not too bad for an appetizer was just enough to coat my stomach. The taste was delicious. Wings... well were decent. I forget the flavor but I would mind getting them again. Now the pizza was a smash!!! We had the margarita pizza. My problem with it was is cam out warm not hot. So with in 15 minutes it was cold. But it was still good. Drinks: I had a fire pit and a sangria(not pictured) the fire pit is like a flavorful old fashion. It's very good and slightly strong. 2 sangrias will get you lit. Seating: Now the place was not packed and we were seating sort of in the isle way adjacent to the bathroom. I mention this for one reason; if it is cold outside every time some one opens the door the breeze smacks you in the face a little bit.. and after 3 or 4 times the wind is also freezing your food. They could have sat us in another location. I did not ask to move because I was enjoying my company but just keep that in mind if you get more than drinks. I celebrated my lunch birthday here with a friend and had a blast. Our amazing server was Desiree, and let's just say she is the reason why this place is getting 5 stars! Food was from meh to great. I highly recommend the Dynamite Shrimp. It was just yummy ( needed a bit more spice). We also ordered the Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich and it wasnt good. The flavors were simply off. I would not recommend this, not even if youre hungry. Basically id come back just to interact with Desiree. So polite, so kind and efficient with all of my millions of requests.
