Stopped in last Friday evening. It seems like the place was transported in from California or maybe Portland. Definitely not a "North Idaho" experience. The beer I had, an IPA, was ok but nothing that I haven't had out of a bottle at the Super1. I had the pulled pork sandwich. Beer was great, service was terrible, food was ok. I like their outdoor seating area, lots of open areas and covered for that unpredictable weather. My guy had the elk burger, which was fantastic but my BLT was sub par. We also got the charcuterie board which was beyond lame. Went there not long after it open.. prices were decent, a little on the expensive side with the type of food that was being served but the food was good! We were a bit thrown off when we were leaving.. one of the employees asked us to clear our table and put everything in the crates by the doors as we leave. I heard that may have changed.. hopefully. But we haven't been back since mainly due to that. Might go in soon and see if things had changed. read more

A pleasant brew-pub with delicious food. They have a wide selection of pasties. I'm from Michigan, and I love pasties, but I haven't seen them sold in many places. Pasties were originally brought to the US by the miners from Cornwall, England, and maybe, like in Michigan, pasties arrived in North Idaho with the miners--I don't know. Compared to Upper Peninsula Michigan pasties, these had a flakier dough and much more meat, with less rutabagas and potatoes. Even though they weren't the same, they were delicious!! There was an excellent musician, a singer-songwriter playing his guitar, and the volume wasn't so loud that you couldn't talk. Staff was friendly and helpful. Excellent beer and really friendly service! We got to Matchwood pretty close to closing time but the staff was still so upbeat and really friendly. The beer was so tasty! I got a flight with all three of their IPA's and they were very pleasantly smooth and very fruit forward. The interior of the brewery was really cool! Will definitely be going back! read more

Really special and great spot. The space is beautiful--open yet cozy, with an area for kids, a community room, two balconies and a fire pit outside. Both IPAs are very good. I'm a vegetarian and had more than enough to eat, with the ratatouille pastie, pretzel with jalapeño maple syrup (!!) and big salads. The owners are very friendly & engaged, and the service is reliably good. Super excited about this place and looking forward to seeing what it's like in the summertime! read more

When they first opened, I went with my friend who has owned a brewery. Both of us struggled with the menu and finally decided on half orders of a spinach salad. The bill was $26 or 27, without drinks. The salads came and there was a mistake and we actually got the full salads for the price of a half. Great food, great beer, and an awesome building. We had the habba habba wings (delicious and spicy!), a caesar salad (freaking ENORMOUS, we shared a full size between two adults who had been moving heavy furniture for about six hours), and a bangers pasty. I can whole heartily say that this place is reason enough to visit Sandpoint, and one of the reasons we will be coming back. The place it's self is beautiful, when I walked in I was awe struck with the design aspects and how welcoming the place felt. We then met one of the owners who walked us through the beer menu, let me taste the ones I wasn't sure of and helped me build a flight! All these beer was SOO good - the chocolate milk porter was my favourite!! I had the inland bowl for lunch and would recommend it to anyone! Very overpriced for what you get (food and beer) - especially given that you order at the bar and bus your own table! A beer that's not even a full 16oz is almost $7. The food is even worse for quality and quantity for the price. Lots of other places nearby with better beer and way better food, service, and prices. I'll echo the other reviews about the cool building and atmosphere though. This could be a really great place but a serious menu and business model overhaul is needed. read more

The beer is average, the food is sub standard (even the grand kids said the hot dogs tasty funny and they left their 'french fries".) Absolutely love the structure of this building. It's very rustic and modern inside, which was quite enjoyable. I had a round of their 4 tastings. The German beer was decent that I had. The others I wasn't too crazy about. I got a burger too; it was decent. Before I went, looked online for events but it wasn't updated. Please keep things current, because I wanted to learn about more things to do or gatherings. Lastly, I noticed that it was family friendly. This is good and bad - good if you have little ones and want to get your rocks off, but bad for the rest of us trying to have adult fun without a screaming baby. Just okay. Our experience wasnt great. Our service wasn't great. We ordered three sandwiches and it took over 45 minutes to get our food. Food is in the higher end for a brewery. $13+ for a sandwich. They charge for sauce....really? Yes really. For a brewery, we expected pretty relaxed people, but I saw several employees on their phone several times and after we got our food, our table wasnt visited again. We won't be back, we won't refer. We visited matchwood because there wasn't any parking near the other brewery in town, but I wish we would've found parking and walked. read more

We stopped in at matchwood brewing and sat down for a flight of in house brewed beers with some amazing meals to match. Been here a number of times. Hard to find a good pasty outside of Montana and theirs is the real thing. Had a burger once too and it was very tasty. I like the beer selection and my grandson loves the play area. On top of it all the building gives the place a great feel. I always enjoy just being there. read more

I've tried this new business twice, once late at night in May before tourist season for just one IPA, when there were only 3 customers. That was my best impression of Matchwood because of the bartender and cook's friendliness and desire to please and genuineness as I talked with both for a good while. I noticed the beer and wine prices were noticeably quite high, well above average at $6.50 for their largest sub-pint glass. The old warehouse building was Very Expensive to renovate and they did a good job. But I'm used to paying $5 to $5.50 in Sandpoint at a regular time, not a happy hour price, for a standard shaker size pint glass of great craft beer made on the premises. The quality of the Matchwood IPA was just average and the size of the glass was below average, definitely not a 14-15 oz. glass. I came back two months later and pretty much knew I was going to be disappointed, but I heard that the fries were quite good. I didn't have a little kid to bring with me; that would have been fun! I really wish I hadn't given it a second chance. I parted with $28.68 total for a one and a half star experience (my second and last there): $11 for the overcooked hamburger with good just below medium sized serving of fries, 2 - $6.50 overpriced smaller glasses of average beer, and left only a $3 tip for the average at best beers plus a $1.68 tax: a lot of money for their small (but not the smallest!) spruce tip pale and the classic IPA, and an overcooked one and a half star thin frozen patty burger. Two breweries and two brewpubs and two taprooms I go to in Sandpoint do not even charge sales tax on their full size, delicious, above average $5 'pint' beers. They only charge sales tax on their definitely better than Matchwood burgers! The Matchwood curly fries were good as recommended! To sum it up, - Both beers were nothing to write home about, and I was quite disappointed in the burger. Don't bother asking for it to be cooked medium rare; it doesn't have the quality for anything less than medium. Mine was cooked beyond medium and the bar lady said it would be medium and not medium rare, cause they don't do M-R at Matchwood. Why do all of the other breweries and pubs in Sandpoint have servers so you don't need to line up at the bar to order drinks, to order food, and to pay your bill. At least there is a nice server who brings your food to your table. I wouldn't mind doing my own serving if the beer and food was above average. But the going to the bar to order everything all takes time, especially when it's busy and you're sitting outside where it's quieter. Time that I could spend talking with my friends and enjoying eating and drinking with them and enjoying experiencing the 3 or 4 kids playing loudly, one baby crying loudly and a couple other cute ones yelling/screaming for joy running around. There was even a sad little toddler guy crying with his Dad for his Mama in the bathroom. Actually the family friendliness is one of the most well recommended main endearing qualities here, along with the French fries and cleanliness of the place. For me, the two beers and the burger did not cut it all, especially considering the higher prices, smaller servings, lower quality, no servers but plenty of cute, noisy kids, and Matchwood being cheap in charging sales tax on the beer. If I were a kid I would give it a 4 star rating. read more

A necessary stop when visiting Sandpoint! The Hazy IPA is one the best I've tasted. The Altbier is another favorite! Their elk burger is a 10! Great spot to just sit on the patio and relax!
