Their website is user friendly and easy to find instructions about booking a car shipment to Honolulu from the West Coast. Since Matson doesn't have a car transport service from Utah to their port in California, we had to hire another company to handle that part because we did not feel like driving 10 hours from Salt Lake City to Long Beach. Back to Matson, once my car reached Long Beach, California, we were notified that the vehicle made it safely and was waiting on the container to ship across the Pacific Ocean. POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE from their customer service department. Handling of the vehicle during port and shipping: 5 stars. Customer service when something goes wrong on Matson's side: 0 stars. Matson customer service will place blame on anything, except them. When our vehicle paperwork was being processed, we were told to track the vehicle on their website. When the vehicle was inspected, we were told to track the vehicle on their website, but to WAIT for an email stating the vehicle is ready for pick up. We tracked online, and it stated the vehicle was scheduled for pick up on June 21. We then received an email with the later pick up date (one week later), so flight arrangements were made to pick up within the allotted days to avoid storage fees (we live two states away from the port). To our surprise, we then received an email stating that the vehicle is currently ready for pick up and must be picked up within the allotted days to avoid charges. We quickly changed our flight to pick up the vehicle. When we arrived at the port, the vehicle was not on the dock. We had to book a return flight back home, and another flight for the following week, times two as we had two cars to pick up. $$$ We were provided the customer service 1-800 number, as well as the supervisor's name to discuss. We called, and have been completely ignored by supervisor Shannon McCandless. We were told that the emails were not Matson's fault as it was IT's fault. Matson customer service agent actually said the words to me that it was not Matson's fault that the wrong email was sent by Matson! We did not go to the port on the first available day as we had to make flight arrangements to pick up our vehicles. Matson was aware of the incorrect email having been sent for over 24 hours, and did nothing to correct this issue. Also, when we were at the port, there was another customer there who drove 4.5 hours to pick up her car, and had to scramble to rearrange schedules for herself and her driver to make it to the port for the earlier pick up. As you can imagine, we are beyond frustrated because of Matson's lack of communication. We also left a message for Matson's Director of Customer Service, Claire Hasl, and she too has not reached out to us. The port agent who handled our pick up, Catherine (or maybe Katherine?) was very helpful and responsive. She went over and above to make sure we were taken care of at the port. She provided us with the information to contact customer service, and then we hear crickets from customer service. This fiasco occurred June 21 and as of today (July 11), we have not heard a peep from Matson. read more

Trucking company photographed the damage BEFORE picking up my vehicle for delivery. When Matson Shipping was notified of the damage and that a claim was going to be filed. The senior cargo claims examiner, Roxanne Wicks stated a claim for damages would be denied. They also would give you a few days to check if there's any damage for claims. It cost $1500 to ship one way. After picking up the car, they also gave me a coupon for a Free car wash any selected Hele gas station car wash. (Nothing close to town. The closest one was 25 mins away in Pearl city though.) I knocked one star off because the pickup process took quite a long time, more than half an hour, and I was the only one. I'm not sure if it's because it's toward the end of day or it's understaffed or for whatever reason. But good thing they had a shaded outdoor area for waiting. The drop off at Long Beach was very pleasant too. I shipped my car from the Oakland port to the Honolulu port and it took way less time that I had originally expected. Upon arriving at the Oakland port they estimated my car to get to Hawaii in 10 days, which was already so much shorter than I had originally assumed. Then the car actually came 4 days early, so in total it only took 6 days to ship which I thought was pretty amazing. Total shipping cost was around $1600 - they more recently upped their prices from $1500 to $1600. Once you are notified that your car arrived, you have 4 BUSINESS days to store it at the lot for free. After that they will start charging you per day (including weekend days) and the fee increases the longer it is there. This worked out well for me because I had a rental car when my car arrived and no extra spot to park my car at the same time, so I had to leave my car at the port for 3 business days until my rental was done. Pickup was super easy. I got a Lyft to Matson Auto Receiving and Delivery: 51 Pier, Honolulu, HI 96819 (DO NOT go to the 1411 Sand Island Parkway address they provide online - it will send you to the wrong building down the street). Then I just had to give them my booking number and ID. I waited for maybe 10 minutes and then they called my name and walked me to my car. They let me do an initial inspection, but everything looked just fine except for a few cobwebs in the front passenger foot area. Finally they provide you with the Bill of Landing and instructions on how to register the car in Hawaii and also a free car wash voucher! Also not to mention everyone working at the Honolulu office was so nice and friendly! Will definitely probably use Matson again if I ever have to ship my car back to the mainland. read more

TL:DR - Shipped out of Oakland, picked up in Honolulu. Did all my paperwork online. Straightforward easy process. I wish they would have updated the Maston website with information pertaining to picking up the car and COVID. I'll keep this short and sweet since there wasn't much face to face interaction. I needed to ship my car to Oahu, and there are basically two choices: Matson and Pasha. From the other yelp reviews, Matson is the better option. They both have terrible reviews and they both have stellar reviews. I think it's just luck of the draw. Things to keep in mind before beginning the process of sending your car over. If you're moving all your stuff too, it might be worth it to rent out a shipping container. You basically have to empty your car out before shipping it, so don't think you can hide the heavier stuff you need to send over. Also, keep in mind what port you're shipping your car out from. This will change the date you have to drop your car off and when it will arrive in Hawaii. Go to the Matson website and there you'll be able to book your car and pay for it. Take your car to the designated port and drop off your car. IMPORTANT: make sure to properly clean the inside and outside of your car. When you drop off your car, the matson employees will do a once over of your car, but they are not the ones who determine if it will go on the ship or not, another agency, probably the agriculture officer, will determine whether or not you can ship it. If your car is dirty and/or doesn't pass the inspection, then your car won't ship until it's cleaned. Also of note: when I dropped my car off, they had me drive through a tent with video cameras on all sides. I imagine this is to record your car from all angles if any issues of shipping damage are raised. Lastly, when I picked up my car in Hawaii, even if you have been vaccinated and got a negative COVID test, you still need to wait 10 days before picking up your car --OR-- you have to email matson your vaccination record, negative covid test, identification materials, and shipping number before picking up your car. This wasn't made apparent in any of the documentation before I went to the port to pick up my car. So definitely get that taken care of before heading to get your car, or else you'll be turned away. Not only when I call do I not receive any customer service but the price of my vehicle drop off went up $300 for my ground transport from Long Beach because they had mechanical issues with one of their boats. Honestly i'm very disappointed. My vehicle was picked up in december and today it because available for pick up here in Honolulu. Upon pick up the front end of my car is scratched down to the plastic, my registration was taken out of my vehicle and was NOT in my vehicle when it arrived to island. the 2 gallons of gas that was in the vehicle when i gave it to them was gone, before i shipped the car out i called to verify that i can leave a quart of unopened oil in my car. I go open my trunk and even my oil is gone, whether they had to put it in the car is unknown to me. Behind my driver seat was soaked, you can see the color difference in the carpets. My vehicle was completely empty, there's no reason my floor should be soaked especially if it was in a container. I will not be using this company again. Not worth the $3K. read more

First time coming here with my wife. We had to drop off my in-laws vehicles to be shipped off to the Mainland. Anyways, this was an experience for us. My in-laws rushed outta Hawaii to be a mainlander for life and in doing so, they didn't read Matsons fine print about making sure your vehicle has only a 1/4 tank of gas, buuut of course they decided to fill their tank full hence why we have them. Whatevers, it's free gas. Anyways, we really had no idea what to do, but they did a great job setting up easy-to-follow instructions for us during these COVID times. There's a guy who checks your temperature as you enter their parking lot so make sure you bring your face mask too. The vehicle drop off is to your right side after the temperature guy. Make sure you have your vehicle receipt to enter. After dropping off ur vehicle, you'll be guided into their main office where we were assisted. The whole process dropping off 2 vehicles took less than 15 minutes. The price to ship your vehicle I think, depends on the weight of your vehicle. Each vehicle was about less than $900 with the biggest vehicle being a Nissan Frontier shipping to California. The staff are very friendly and quick. The parking lot is huge. They have a pretty good setup for COVID to keep everyone as safe as possible while keeping social distancing. read more

You might want to look at another shipping company that will either take care of your vehicle or claim responsibility for their mistakes. I shipped my vehicle from Hawaii at the beginning of June with a scheduled pickup date of 26 June in California. Vessel arrived, but when the truck driver arrived to pick-up my car, they were told it wasn't ready yet. Then, Matson sends an email, on 30 June, saying that my vehicle "is difficult to start and dies when it's started." This caused my vehicle to be labeled as "in-op." Now, when I dropped off my vehicle, there were no issues with it starting or the vehicle running. It made it through the inspection area, was driven to the port, parked for a few days, and then driven onto the vessel with no issues. I had to pay an additional $600 and wait an additional 3 weeks to have my vehicle delivered, due to Matson saying my vehicle was in-op and having to find a driver that could winch my vehicle on and off the trailer. When the driver arrived with my vehicle, he told me that the battery was dead. He jumped it, and drove it off the truck, with no issues at all. He also handed me my key, broken and wrapped in packing tape, saying that's how the key was handed to him. Opened up my car and the entire interior is covered in dirt and dust, which leads me to believe that the stevedores didn't shut my car door all the way, which is what caused my battery to die. I sent Matson claims an email 20 days ago, showing the receipt for the increased cost I had to pay for the "in-op" vehicle, and the cost for a replacement key. I am asking for reimbursement for $600 and for them to pay the $168 dollars it will cost for a new key fob. I haven't received a response to my initial email, nor my follow up email. read more

I used a third party company to coordinate the shipping of my cars from Las Vegas to Honolulu as this is all new to me. As far as I understand, there are two companies that ship to HI. Lucky for me, they chose Matson, very sentimental for me as this is the company my father-in-law worked for man years before retiring. I was told that shipping from Long Beach,CA to HI only occurs every other week compared to two months ago where shipping occurred once a week. Luckily, when I scheduled my cars to be picked up, shipping was occurring the next day. If I missed it, my cars would have to wait another 2-weeks. Matson provides its customers the ability to track their order once it is marked received by them. It is super easy to use and a link was provided to me by the shipping coordinator company. An Order Number was provided to me for each car. On the tracking page, all I had to do was enter in that Order Number. Initially, the tracker said that my cars were being loaded onto the specific ship and estimated to arrive in Honolulu on 11/5/2019. Once it was in the water, the status updates to "Shipping" and estimated arrival was 10/28. Surprisingly faster since my cars were picked up on 10/17. I also had my household items picked up by PODS on 10/9, but it's estimated arrival is 11/25! What I was hoping to see was a picture of where exactly the ship was in the Pacific Ocean and how far out it was, like when flying, but no such luck. Last weekend 10/27, the status changed to arrived and my estimated pickup was changed to 10/29. One of the things I was worried about was the amount of time I had to pick up the cars and what the storage fees would be if i couldn't pick them up on time. If you have ever had your car towed, lot fees are expensive. The email I received that notified me that my cars are ready for pickup included this information - I was allowed 4-days to pickup beginning the day after the noted pick up date. Since I was notified on the 29th, the 4-day count started on the 30th. If this time is exceeded, they daily charge is $6.94 for the next 4-days and $9 everyday thereafter, no extra fees for weekends. Relief that the lot fees are far less expensive than when your car is towed. On the 29th my sister and I ubered over to Matson's receiving office as there is a different office, next door, that you go to to drop off. The address provided and following GPS will take you to a lot for all other shipping companies. Luckily, my uber driver has been to Matson's receiving office a few times so he knew to make a left at the next gate. Pickup times are limited to M - F, excluding holidays, from 8:30 am to 11:30am and from 1 pm to 3 pm. It is recommended to be in the office to pickup by 2:30 for processing. My sister and I arrived at 12:50 pm but the office was open and we signed in as instructed by the super nice lady. While waiting and glancing around the office, it's huge and spacious. When you first walk in, you sign in at the first desk. Not sure what the other desk area in the back part was for, but also a huge space. The waiting area is large as well with plenty of seating. It reminded me of the DMV in CA and Las Vegas, but with a lot less people in the seats. The office is older with the older linoleum floors but the office as a whole is very clean. Once 1 pm came around, the employees quickly went through the list. By 1:05 pm, they allowed me, one person per car, to go to the lot to ensure both cars are in the same condition as it was delivered to them. As I walked out the back door, the Matson employee used an electronic badge key to get into the lot. So happy to see the area is secured. And there were my two cars sitting side-by-side. I had butterflies in my stomach. I was expecting a lot of water spots from overseas but it wasn't too bad. They even offer to put in a gallon of gas in each car as I was required to deliver the cars with less than 1/4 tank of gas. Once back inside to fill out some paperwork, I was given a coupon for free carwash and paperwork for car registration. Quick and painless. I was outta there by 1:15pm. Additional security measure is in place when you leave the lot to ensure you're leaving with the right cars. You're probably wondering how much was it to ship ... $1497 each car. Had I shipped the car two months earlier, it would have been $500 less. Both shipping companies that ship from Long Beach to HI had just raised their prices in September. Going through this whole process makes me think about HI's own sustainability and why costs of goods are high, as well as appreciate the process itself, but that's a whole different discussion. 5-stars for Matson for their experience in exceeding all my expectations with time and delivery, knowledgable employees when it comes to car registration, super clean facility and lot. And most of all, making this process so much easier than I thought it would be. read more

I am normally not a reviewer, but this situation has me very frustrated with Matson. I shipped my car to Honolulu nine months ago no problem. Then shipping it back to Long Beach I picked up my car yesterday after it arrived early and the car is INFESTED with roaches. I reached out to their claim team to try and get a partial reimbursement to bomb and detail the car and there response was absurd. They claim to not do an interior inspection on the vehicle before shipping so they cannot confirm this is not a previous condition in the vehicle. Yet when shipping from Hawaii to the mainland and I quote from their booking email they state: "PLEASE NOTE - Vehicles shipping from HAWAII to the MAINLAND UNITED STATES are subject to stringent inspections by the USDA prior to shipping. It is the responsibility of the shipper to have the interior and exterior of the vehicle thoroughly cleaned. Example: The USDA looks for clumps of mud in wheel wells or under the vehicle's carriage, under the hood of vehicles is also inspected, the USDA also looks for dirt, grasses, plant seeds in the interior as well as the exterior and for anything that they consider invasive to the U.S Continent. If you fail the USDA inspection Matson will be unable to ship your vehicle until the vehicle has been properly cleaned and re-inspected by the USDA." Because of this I got the car detailed before shipping to Hawaii and it was spotless. They claim to do stringent inspections but now say they don't? Seems like a lack of responsibility. I will continue to fight this with Matson and involve my bank if necessary but Matson's inability to do what's right by the customer is appalling. Complete and utter mess. I think their biggest issue is communication. I scheduled my car to be dropped off a month in advance online. I dropped off my car the day selected for drop off and it was confusing to say the least. There were tents set up outside the building due to covid. There were no signs as to where to go and there was no one there to greet you to tell you what to do. Under the tents were chairs and customers waiting. We ran into someone that worked there and he asked if we were dropping off or picking up. If you were picking it up you had to go to this other guy that was standing by a portable. Not sure where the pick up people go. Anyways the car is registered under my husband and I but they said I didn't need to be present and could wait in the car. However, the reason for the one star? Lack of communication. The lady told my husband that my car would no longer be shipped to the port I chose when booking, but a different port in the same state. However, I was never notified of this change in advance. It was more of a surprise!
