Nobu Matsuhisa is a Japanese celebrity chef and restaurateur. I've been to Nobu in several cities, but never to a Matsuhisa, until today. One of the sushi makers told me that Nobu is a corporate chain, while Matsuhisa is more about family ownership. We start with the signature Jalapeño Yellowtail. Next, the Tiradito Roll, which the sushi chef suggested. It's not on the menu. Like the secret menu at In-N-Out! We finish with the King Crab Tempura and Black Cod Lettuce Wraps. So amazing! Service was perfect as usual for Nobu restaurants; I love how they keep a limited amount of dining space as to eye which course you're on, before bringing you each plate at once. I hard a hard time seeing the difference between Matsuhisa and Nobu. Rock shrimp creamy spicy, chicken udon, sashimi salad, and yellowtail and scallion roll are so unique and I crave them everyday. I haven't had the best of luck of finding good asian spots in Denver, therefore was ecstatic when I heard matsuhisa was owned by Nobu. We opted for the omakase option and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Our waitress was super knowledgable and walked us through every dish and gave us the option to select which fish cuts to include or not include based on our allergy and food preferences. Also shoutout to one of our servers, I don't know his name but he's tall, young, and dirty blonde. Was so sweet the entire meal and made sure we never had an empty glass of water or a dirty plate! Price : $$$$ - 175 per person for omakase and if you order individual dishes, it totals to about the same price. Food: Standout dishes for me was the black cod with sweet miso and the lamb chomps. The black cod was so flaky and essentially tasted the same as the miso cod offered at Nobu. The lamb chops were incredible, I've never had lamb meat so tender. The Peruvian seasoning was an interesting contrast to the miso glaze, but it worked! For the price, the sashimi, nigiri, and sushi was not up to my standards. Overall, Matsuhisa is the perfect place for an anniversary dinner as the food, service, and price will definitely leave you shocked. Worth it? No. For 175 (not including tip, drinks,dessert) there definitely should have been more premium items added into the mix such as uni, A5 wagyu, and more toro. Excellent food, service and cocktail. This was our first time coming to this restaurant, and we expected the food to be on par with Sushi/Izakaya Den and Uchi. We're happy to say that that the quality of food, service and drinks met our expectations --and some dishes were even better than Sushi Den and Uchi. We thought the new summer dish of salmon sashimi with beets, peach and jalapeño vinaigrette was delicious, and the bincho truffle sashimi was excellent. I didn't know that truffle would pair well with fish, but somehow this dish creates a great balance between the fresh seafood and the earthiness of the truffle. Billy, our server, recommended some wonderful dishes and drinks (the gardener cocktail with tequila was so, so good! Not too sweet, not too spicy, everything just mixed so well). The chef at the sushi counter worked together with our server to create an omakase-like experience that focused more on sushi and sashimi. We also tried some dishes from the kitchen like the appetizer black cod miso in lettuce cup and rock shrimp tempura, and they're all delicious. What I thought Matsuhisa did really well was combining different flavors to highlight the freshness of their fish and seafood, and we're very impressed by their creativity and attention to details. read more

When you go to Matsuhisa you are paying for the rent in a Cherry Creek location. What you don't get is the very best fish - theirs tends to be dry reflecting that it's been too long in inventory; improperly frozen and/or shipped; and, simply not of the highest quality. Yes, the room is nice and the service generally very good but Sushi Den is head and shoulders better fish and isn't that why we eat sushi? read more

I finally found myself back at Matsuhisa for a friend's birthday & I'm thrilled to say they have officially redeemed themselves in my book. We had dined at Matsuhisa Denver back in 2017 (#oof) and our experience was less than ideal lol lol - so it was great to see the Denver location is certainly on its feet and running at the same caliber of Matsuhisa's Vail and Aspen locations! We started off our meal with a bottle of Mionetto Prosecco Brut & continued drinking bottles throughout our meal. This prosecco is fruity with strong hints of golden apples - it's dry, fresh & light in body SO it's delightful paired with sushi and seafood. & it's always a necessity to have bubbly in hand when celebrating a birthday! Sushi Bar Starters - I had an oyster shooter and the table shared two orders of the Spicy Tuna with Crispy Rice. The oyster shooter consists of an oyster, soy sauce, vinegar, sake, quail egg, masaga, green onion and ponzu served in a shot glass. You are meant to shoot this exactly like a regular shot. This was a rough start to the meal lol - I don't like sake so this shooter was hard to stomach IMO. However, the mix of flavors was certainly interesting & should I have been a bigger fan of sake, I think I would have enjoyed this starter. The Spicy Tuna with Crispy Rice is made with freshly chopped spicy tuna that is mixed with spicy mayo & scallions and then served with crispy sushi rice cubes on the side. This starter is wonderful. The rice cubes are flash fried so the outside is crispy while the rice on the inside remains sweet and chewy. Pair the toasty fried rice cube with a spoonful of spicy tuna then lightly dip your cube in some soy sauce for an irresistible flavor & texture combo! This starter can be easily split between two people should you choose to do so! Kitchen Starters - Nobu Tacos with Tuna & Lobster. These tacos are an extremely popular menu item at all the Matsuhisa and at Nobu Restaurants! The Nobu Tacos are made with a small corn tortilla, your choice of seafood (lobster, crab, tuna), salsa, garlic, cilantro, and onion - everyone loved the tacos. Matsuhisa Signature Style Sashimi - the table had the Yellowtail with Jalapeno. The Yellowtail is dipped in minced garlic and then plated with a yuzu ponzu sauce and topped with jalapeno. This Yellowtail sashimi is a prime example of Matsuhisa's top notch quality seafood where the fish shines on it's own. The Yellowtail sashimi is so freaking fresh & the other ingredients served to enhance this freshness. The thin slices of Yellowtail are smooth and then complimented by citrus tang of the yuzu and jalapeno crunch. 10/10 Soups - the table had the Miso Soup. This is what I would call an "elevated" miso soup due to Matsuhisa utilizing homemade ingredients - the soup is made with Nobu's homemade Dashi, thinly sliced firm tofu & scallions, and white miso. Solid little side dish to have with your meal. Matsuhisa Specialties - the table had the Rock Shrimp Tempura (creamy spicy) and the Black Cod, sweet Miso. Matsuhisa's Rock Shrimp Tempura is made with battered shrimp fried until light golden and then coated with a creampy & spicy chili garlic sauce and topped with a lemon juice and chives. This tempura is awesome and I tend to be fairly skeptical of tempura dishes as a whole (I think a lot of times tempura just tastes like something that has been overly breaded & fried). Matsuhisa's Rock Shrimp Tempura is served hot and although there is a crisp exterior coating on the shrimp, they manage to keep the shrimps' internal texture integrity as to where it's not too tough. The sauce on the shrimp is SO tasty and is what every homemade spicy mayo sauce should taste like! The Black Cod, sweet Miso is a black cod that is marinated in sake-miso for 2-3 days. The Black Cod, sweet Miso is a signature dish at Matsuhisa and Nobu restaurants and is a MUST ORDER. The cod came to us PIPING hot (just how it should be served) and the buttery miso marinated fish melted in our mouths. The miso marinade adds a sweetness to this elegant dish and the Black Cod goes down silky smooth. I now see why the Black Cod, sweet Miso is one of Matsuhisa's most popular items on the menu. Desserts - the table had the Nobu Style Shaved Ice. The shaved ice is served on top of vanilla bean ice cream and then paired with a condensed milk & fruit sauce. Was so happy to enjoy some Matsuhisa to celebrate my birthday. I ordered online and used their curbside pick-up option. Once I was parked I called the number provided and the gentleman who brought my order (with mask) out placed everything safely in the open trunk of my car. Very good sushi and service. I was able to make reservations online for 2 on a Thursday night at 5:30 for early dinner. Got there and was seated right away with choice of sitting at sushi bar or table. We chose a table. The waiter named Watson took good care of us and gave us good recommendations although he was a little too pushy on the sea bass nigiri since the chef recommended it. We didn't order it but appreciated the recommendation, just not 3 separate times :). Anyways we ordered miso soup with tofu which was good but nothing out of the ordinary from other Japanese restaurants. For starters we got edimame and both crab and tuna Nobu tacos...both delicious. For main meals, we ordered salmon, eel, whitefish sashimi. The salmon was especially good, super soft and tender. The service was really good, they switched our plates when they were dirty and attended to our drink needs. This is a review from an omakase dinner about a month ago. Some ingredient details may not be 100% correct. We sat at the sushi bar and were excited to interact with the sushi chef, but any interaction was very minimal. One of the advantages of the sushi counter was getting sushi immediately after it was prepared and talking with the chef about what we are going to eat or what we just ate. However, the chef in front of us did not prepare any of our food. Little did we know that the chefs at the sushi bar only prepared one type of sushi (ours was doing sushi rolls) and there was limited sushi on the omakase menu. All of our food and explanations of it came from our server. Not a big deal, but this was surprising. Immediately after seating, we were provided the traditional wet towels to clean our hands. Neither of us are big drinkers so we just got green tea which was topped off continuously throughout the night. Hand roll with lettuce, cucumber, carrot, pickled daikon, and miso. The different, crunchy vegetables were a good complement to the salty miso. The nori wrapper was nice and crunchy unlike some other hand rolls we've had at other restaurants. Fatty tuna tartare topped with caviar. Served ice cold on top of a bowl of ice, the salty caviar and garlic, onion sauce paired well with the fatty tuna. A Japanese green plum finished off this dish with a nice floral, sweet note. First sushi course with 1) Tai (sea bream), 2) Ankimo (monkfish liver), 3) Hamachi (yellowtail). 1) The sea bream was overpowered by serving it on top of a lemon slice. All we could taste was the acidic lemon. 2) This was our first time eating monkfish and it was very bland. Maybe some salt or seasoning would help, but we definitely would not call it the foie gras of the sea. Or maybe it was served colder than usual since it was not rich or creamy like we expected with liver. 3) The yellowtail was nice with shaved truffle, dehydrated miso, and chives. Second sushi course with 1) Otoro (fatty tuna), 2) Sayori (halfbeak), 3) Uni (sea urchin), 4) Seared Bincho (albacore) Everything was good here, but the seared tuna was served in a small tea cup which was awkward to eat out of. Butter lettuce wedge, shaved parmesan and truffle, red pepper, wasabi dressing. The most disappointing course. I typically like wasabi, but there was way too much dressing and too much wasabi (or horseradish) in the dressing to overpower everything else. We could not taste anything else but wasabi and left mine un-eaten. This was also served as an uncut lettuce wedge which was awkward to eat without a fork/knife. We had to pick up the whole wedge with our chopsticks and gnaw off a piece at a time. Miso black cod lettuce wraps. This was a complimentary course since we didn't eat the salad. Marinated black cod was good, but served colder than I liked (this would start a trend). The fried noodles provided a good crunch. Only complaint is that this was messy to eat as a lettuce wrap and we got sticky miso sauce all over our hands. Typically this is a starter so it would have been nice to have our wet towels to wipe our hands with afterwards. Grilled octopus with cherry tomatoes and edamame sauce. Octopus was very tender and the grill provided nice smoky flavors. The cherry tomatoes should have been left off the dish since it's not tomato season in December and they had no taste. I understand that octopus is sometimes served room temperature or cold, but the I would have prefered this to be hot. Maybe the omakase progression was derailed from the additional lettuce wraps. Wagyu beef with morels and raspberry yogurt sauce. We were excited after hearing we were getting some wagyu, but this was disappointing. The morel mushrooms were the best part since the plate was cold and thus the beef was also cold. We're not sure why the plate wasn't warmed (maybe because of the yogurt sauce?), but the cold beef was more chewy than expected and lacked flavor. Lobster bisque with fried mushrooms. Inexplicably served on a cold plate/bowl. The only thing warm in the soup was the fried mushrooms, but this would have been much better if the overall dish was warm/hot. Chocolate cake, raspberry sorbet, passion fruit pearls, dehydrated orange. Nice end of the meal. Overall, we were quite disappointed with our dinner. Many dishes had major missteps with plating issues and unbalanced components. Several dishes were served cold which was off-putting, muted the flavors, and caused textural issues. After Uchi & Sushi Den Omakase experiences, it was only fair to add Matsuhisa. If you're unfamiliar with what an Omakase is, it's a Japanese phrase leaving it up to the chef. Pairings start from lightest to heaviest, so when a beef tartare and gazpacho were the last two courses before dessert, you can assume the confusion we had. While yes it may be up to the chef, two French pairings with no real specialty or curation to Japanese fusion takes away from that experience IMO. Overall, great fish, but probably would suggest newcomers to peek at the menu before deciding on the experience or an al a carte choice. read more

Life is not complete without three things - love, football and sushi at Matsuhisa/Nobu. I've been lucky enough to enjoy Nobu in multiple cities. Matsuhisa is not far from the perfection free that produces all the award-winning worthy dishes. About the dishes and fishes - do yourself a grand favor by ordering the (1) Salmon New Style all to yourself. Forget about sharing that dish, I almost fought my friends over the plate. We licked it clean. We're animals. Friendships were tested. (2) Soft Shell Crab with black bean sauce is to die and revive for. Get the (3) Black Cod with Miso to share. Make your taste buds and appetite happy by getting the (4)House Special roll which is usually a rainbow roll, (5) spicy Tuna and (6) Negitoro. About the atmosphere - if you have someone lovely in mind and REALLY like them, this will probably will blow them away. Your wallet will suffer but the finer things in life aren't cheap. Get used to the idea that you'll most likely drop $150+ for two here. The only thing stopping Matsuhisa from being a perfect 5 is that their mixed drinks are not consistent. This is one of my favorite places in Denver. But be ready to spend some money. That is the main reason for my four star ratting, I believe it's too overly priced. The service here is on point, everyone is so nice and attentive. The atmosphere and ambiance is definitely a date or girls night to get dressed up for. Almost everything we ate was amazing. We come enough to know what we like to order. The yellowtail jalapeño is always my favorite at any restaurant. You can tell how fresh it is, we had to get two orders. The crispy spicy tuna is fun, they have their own twist, usually most restaurants it comes compiled for you. Here you get to do it yourself, just missing the avocado and jalapeños to top it off. Next The tacos you get to pick from three different types. I personally love the crab over the beef and lobster. The lamb chops is to die for. This is my favorite place for lamb chops. It's cooked perfectly with the sauce that you can't get enough of. As for cooked fish, they offer different styles on how to perpare it. We love the cod but it has to be cooked oven style. Always ask what they have on special that's not on the menu. The new style salmon roll, was delicious but this torched toro sashimi was the best, it literally melts in your mouth! Even more attractive than the restaurant itself, and it is a perfect spot for fine dining, special occasions, and business dinners, is the high-level of customer service you will experience. From the moment you walk in the door. My birthday dinner, with a gift card from my boss, reservation was easily booked via Open Table. I arrived and was immediately greeted and requested to be seated at the sushi bar. Chef Jason took my order of a lobster taco, mushroom soup (best I've ever had), tuna sushi, and Wagyu beef. The tuna was gorgeous - almost too pretty to eat - and absolutely the best I've enjoyed. The Wagyu beef (2 oz. min.) was perfection. My cooking rock - Himalayan salt - was a bit daunting at first, but then fun when I realized I was enjoying a very unique experience. The team on-site are quick, professional, and very knowledgeable. I eat at this restaurant at least once a week and spend over 400$ for two guest!!! I also give great tip to servers. Last time I went, I went with 2 more guest and I must say that the service was terrible!!! The food was not fresh, me and my two friends had food poisoning for 4 days. This is a great place for when you're in Cherry Creek and craving some sushi. Whether it's a quick dinner with some friends or a big group dinner - they're very well accommodating even on such short notice because their space is so big. My hotel was just down the street so Matsuhisa was very ideal. I'm a big fan of their shiso hai cocktail and my friend followed suit after tasting it! The egg white gave such a wonderful texture. We ordered a variety of hot apps like the spicy tuna with crispy rice, rock shrimp, gyozas, and an assortment of rolls. I really liked the rock shrimp and enjoyed their rolls but would prefer to try their nigiris and sashimi plates next time. We also ordered the dessert maki (can skip) and received a complimentary snow dessert because it was four of our birthdays that we were celebrating. The snow dessert was absolutely wonderful and refreshing. I really enjoyed the condensed milk with the fruit and the hidden ice cream at the bottom! One of my favorite high end restaurants in Denver. We tried out multiple different hot plates as well as sushi rolls and sashimi. Everything that was brought to the table was extremely tasty. It's a bit pricey but it's definitely worth it! Definitely recommended! read more
