Ive given this place several chances, maybe its me. Its always packed and people seem to enjoy it. I just thinks its mediocre Italian food. I'm spoiled because my mother is an amazing cook, so I compare all restaurants (especially Italian) to her cooking. And this place simply does not measure up! The no reservation policy is so annoying and exemplifies the customer "unfriendliness" that dominates the entire dinning experience. The food is very decent but do you want to wait two hours for a table? Unless you are ready to dine on a week day at 5, find another place that shows more appreciation for the customers time. Very disappointed. Had to wait 15 min to be seated when the dining room was empty. Another 15 min to receive our drinks. Waiter did not know the menu. Salad was soaked in balsamic. Food was mediocre. For a place that serves "family" style, they do not really want families there. We had a large party-party of 12; 3 of whom were children. We made our reservation early 5:30 because of this. The waiter seemed friendly and knowledgeable, but it was all a charade. He really knew very little about gluten free diets and how different chicken marsala would taste without the flour. A poor recommendation on his part.. although he kept commenting on how he knew everything. As well, too much time lapsed between the appetizer/salad (which was tasteless) and the main dish. We kept asking for at least the pasta to feed the kids as they were getting restless, and we were seated right by the kitchen door. But, the waiter who knew everything, especially since he told us how he raised his kids, seems to have forgotten what it is like to raise kids. However, I was amazed at how quickly they cleared our plates from the table. Certainly quicker than they served the meal. When the owner or matre d' finally was brought over to us, he was arrogant and uncaring about the poor service we received. For people who go out weekly this is unacceptable. As well, if you bring a child who needs a diaper change, don't think you will find a changing table in the restaurant. They don't have one. THAT should have been a clue as well. Very disappointed as well by the portion sizes and the quality of the food. To be honest, for the price we paid, not worth it at all. Oh..and the waiter said to my three year old granddaughter, "Come with me and we can make ice cream now, Don't you want ice cream." Really? No one said she could have ice cream . And, when I asked if it was included in our price he said, No, it is an additional charge. We just walked out after standing at the entrance for 5 minutes, seen by at least 6 who I think we're employees (appearing busy, greeting people who walked in behind us- I assume they were their friends). Everything about this place is fantastic, I make it a point to bring out of town guests and family here. The food is super fresh, and simple. Gracious servings, family style. We celebrated our sons Communion at Matteo's yesterday afternoon. We had the private room in the back. From start to finish it was a great experience. We worked with Anthony to make the arrangements. With all of my silly questions he was more than happy to answer and accommodate our requests. The head waiter for our party, whose name I sadly don't remember, was phenomenal. He kept the food flowing at an excellent pace and whenever anyone needed anything he was right there to take care of them. The food was outrageous. The guests enjoyed every bit of it. Two stars for the simple reason that they re very pricey for the amount and quality of food. It did not taste bad however it did not meet the price point. Service was good and the owner/manager himself checks on customers. I ordered the grilled chicken, guess what? There was only grilled chicken! The dish doesn't come with anything else but just chicken!!! Thank god for the chewy/ warmed so many times piece of bread they serve you with the butter, to accompany the chicken I ordered. The atmosphere is cozy and warm however I would highly suggest that they remove the TVsc add some backroad soft music and put a door for the kitchen entrance. I have a friend that lives in Bellmore and they recommended Mateo's for lunch so we came with a party of 3 adults one child. We ordered one entrée one appetizer to share but they took too long to make our food, I sat there almost an hour waiting for my entrée. I grew impatient so I asked to host check if the food was ready, he was friendly at first but also displayed shady behavior. When they finally served the entrée the noodles were undercooked and the clams were way too salty. I don't think I'll be visiting another Matteo's, if you want to experience genuine Italian cuisine come to my side of town, Lenny's on cross bay blvd is delicious! read more

The food and service was perfect! My husband went for the first time around 8pm last Saturday without a reservation. We waited by the bar for 15 minutes and were seated. The waiter I forget his name now was super friendly and hospitable throughout our meal. I got the shrimp scampi and my husband got a chicken dish. Delicious dinner. The food is family style with GIGANTIC dishes fr everyone to try the food. The pasta dishes are unreal, the chicken portions are huge and are overall tasty! We knew this restaurant was pricey. We also knew they wanted us out of there. They would clean up as fast as we finished a dish. I booked a dinner for 21 adults 6 weeks in advance. I pre-ordered appetizers to save time and still waited long for them. Dinner took very long to be served and we barely saw our waiter in between the appetizer and dinner when our guests should have been offered more drinks and attended to. We only had one waiter, who was nice, but for a party our size, he was in over his head. For spending the amount of money I did on adequate food, at the very least we shouldn't have had to continuously ask for drink service, bread, etc. Would have happily shared this feedback to the manager in person, however he never even came up to us to see how the evening was going. read more

Ordered take out at the bar because they wouldn't answer the phone. Food was only "ok". I ordered half portions and they gave me and charged me for wholes. When I asked for a correction in price, they literally opened the platter and took half the food back on a plate. Manager was not friendly with a look of un-earned arrogance. Dont waste your time and money! This place has horrible customer service, is ridiculously overpriced and has mediocre food. Called for a to-go order, first time I called the phone rang and rang, there was no answer and no answering machine. Second time I called it took a while for someone to answer, finally someone picked up, i said i wanted to place an order, he said hold on. I held on for over 7 minutes and no one came back. I decided to give it one more try. Finally, the same guy answered again and took my order. We got a half order of chicken marsala and half order of penne alfredo. He said 20 minutes. My husband went to pick it up and he said when he walked in the two people up front were BSing with someone about how good their food was. He was there a few minutes before anyone even acknowledged he was there. I thought maybe bc its a holiday they were busy, but it was only 5pm when he picked the food up and my husband said when he got there, only 2 tables were full and a ton of staff were around in the back. Not really sure why they can't answer their phone or greet a paying customer when one walks in the door. Anyway, got their food and you get crap for your money. We got a half order of chicken marsala which didnt even taste like marsala by the way, it was two extremely thin pieces of chicken in some brownish/reddish sauce with some mushrooms thrown in. It was $21!!! It's not even one full chicken breast for $21!!!! Same with our pasta. You can boil a box of pasta for 75 cents and add some cream sauce for a couple bucks on your own instead of buying a half order for $21!!! Biggest rip-off ever! My husband and I like cold antipasto, so we often order it when we dine at Italian restaurants. The one at Matteo's is quite expensive when compared with their other salads, and turned out to be nothing more than a chopped salad, accompanied by a small plate with a little chopped salami and chopped cheese. I was disappointed at that, but when the bill came, I discovered we were actually charged extra for the salami and cheese. I asked the manager about this and he said it was stated on the menu. However, this extra charge was listed below all the salads. What makes something an antipasto, if it is only lettuce, tomatoes and olives? The place was crowded and noisy, and while the waiter hustled, the service was very slow. It was a lot of money for a at best mediocre meal experience. read more

Was told by co-owners not a restaurant for us. Went there to celebrate a birthday with 10 adults and 4 children. We had reservations for 530PM and was sat when we arrived. The waiter took drink orders. Then came back with drinks and "helped" with the meal order.. BTW his name was Johnny and would recommend another waiter. We ordered a few salads and some appetizers and a bunch of dishes to eat. The appetizers same first baked clams & muscles. Not bad. The salads about 10 minutes later. Chopped salad and Caesars. Chopped was ok- Caesars was average at best. The table was cleared and we were waited for the rest of the meal. After 25-30 minutes with no-one coming by I searched for a manager. Found busboy and asked if he could send a manager. No manger came by, but the waiter said that the meal was on its way. Five minutes later it did. The waiter and some busboys brought the food and the waiter served us. It took over 10 minutes to serve the entire table. Someone to help him would have been the smart thing to do. Before the waiter left I asked to see a manager again. No-one came by. Meal was ok - if you like rubbery shrimp and veal chop that really sucked. (waiter said it was best on the island). Yeah maybe a on Gilligan's Island. the only good dish was the pasta. After the meal they cleaned-up the table real quick, and asked if we would like any dessert or coffee. we said no just the check. Guess what another long wait of about 10 minutes for them to give us the check. We just wanted to get out of there by this time. I finally got to speak to the manager and he explained that it is normal to wait 20-25 minutes between salads and main meal. After I said that is un-reasonable he said it was obvious that this is not a place for me. He is correct. Also they have a valet parking. I was there with my 85 year old mother. The car was bought promptly, however the valet did not even open door. In fact it was locked. So I had to have to run around the car to unlock the door as my mother leaned on the car waiting. Perfect way to end the evening. Not a place to go with a family. I recommend Mio Posta for a much better meal and service. BTW I'm a person that goes out often and have never had such a negative experience from an "upscale" restaurant. read more

My giving this place 1 star has to do with the overall attitude of the place. I've found the food to generally be pretty good. I was a regular customer here for the past few years and the maitre d or manager or whatever he is certainly knows me. My boyfriend and I were there a few weeks ago and had finished our meal and were having our coffee. We were not lingering excessively long. We asked for a second cup of coffee and then we were approached by the maitre d - manager guy who said to us that there was an hour wait for a table, basically telling us to leave. In all my years of dining out, I have never had this happen. I was absolutely appalled. If we were sitting there for two hours maybe I could understand this happening, but we were there maybe an hour and a half. When we were on our way out, I happened to look at the people waiting in the bar area. There were about 10-12 people waiting for tables, certainly not an hour wait. I wrote an email to Matteo's explaining what happened and I never received a response. I can't say I was surprised. If they're so concerned about people waiting a long time for tables, why don't they accept reservations like everyone else? Because they want to cram in as many people as they can and rush them out like they did with us. I won't be going back. I don't appreciate being treated so poorly after spending almost $100 on dinner. read more

They have the most delicious baked clams, I don't order them anywhere else because they are so good here! The penne a la vodka is also yummy with plenty of prosciutto. Ive had their steak for two, chicken franchisee, pasta with clam, salmon with baby clams and mussels...lots of yummy items on the menu. We left over a 20% tip. What he did say was if you are done there is a one hour wait at the bar for tables. In all my years never have I experienced that.
