For years, I can never understand the rave about this place, I'm not the only one that thinks that the food is below. Good quality. Maybe because of its name I don't know, but it's definitely not good food and not good service, but I did hear that they have a good drinks at the bar. I haven't been to Matteo's for a few years and recently revisited with family members visiting from out of state. I was quite disappointed with the quality of the food. Some of the traditional plate preparation was well below the expected and the price was way above the quality that we received. Tte service was acceptable, but not exceptional. We had my sons rehearsal dinner here and all I can say is wow!!!! We had 40 people in the room downstairs. The food was amazing. My favorite were the bake clams and calamari. Had lunch there today. The eggplant parmigiana was rancid. It must have been left over from the weekend and went bad. There was no one in the restaurant at 12:30pm and the waiter was rude as he was answering the phones as well as taking orders. After waiting for 15 minutes to take our order we asked for him to take our order and he was rude and annoyed. Don't eat here on a Monday, food is not fresh and service was terrible. I've been coming to Matteo's for many years. I had not been here in some time so I was looking forward to going. My friend and I went to the bar first it was crowded but the bartenders had it totally under control. My friend and I got Martinis and the drinks were perfect. The Dining room smelled Amazing! All the tables were filled and it was a great ambiance. Right away a bus server brought warm bread, butter and then the waiter Frankie came up to get drink it Appetizer orders. You can get full or Half orders. We ordered warm Mozzarella with roasted peppers & Asparagus. I asked for lemon and it came right away and they were generous (nice so I did not have to ask for more) For our main course we got Cheese Ravioli with marinara sauce and a side of Basil. For dessert I ordered Teramasu cake. It was lovely and tasted home made. Mateos is a great place to go to if you are a larger party and take advantage of there Family Style or just a few and get half orders. The prices are so reasonable! Under $100 and Well worth it! Food is mediocre at best. Our company Xmas dinner parties were celebrated at this location yesterday. Our parties were seated on the 2nd floor, there were about 6 tables that are booked for our comrades. Being observant, one of the servers dare to pick up the ordered cocktail drink from one of the guests who ordered but left unattended, make a roundabout and put the cocktail drink on top of the shelf of a furniture and drink it while AT WORK. Cmon... not saying all servers did that, but I witness about 1 or 2 servers are drinking and eating from our assigned family-style meals. Some stuff like appetizers were served to us instead of putting it on the table. Some of us literally see them drinking alcohol and cocktails behind those plexi glass on what it seems to be the kitchen/dishwasher area on the 2nd floor. Manager was there but pretty useless because he was in it with them in the same room while serving our food portion by portion. Pathetic and what a disgrace to this establishment. At least if the manager allows this type of behavior, make sure to cover your kitchen/dishwasher area so we don't have to blatantly see that you are stealing and putting those drinks on our company's tab. I fell terrible only giving this restaurant a 3-Star review because of something the server choose to do. Service was good, food was fantastic! When presented with the check, the server added a 20% tip to the bill for a group of 3 people. When he brought the printed register receipt to sign, it did not show the 20% tip. It was still looking for a tip to be added. I have to say this was a good lesson for me to be more cautious to make sure I'm not double tipping in the future. Walked in about 4pm on Friday, the place was completely empty. The maitre d pointed us to a table instead of letting us sit basicley anywhere in the empty restaurant. I ordered a drink and was told that they don't make frozen drinks (despite having a fully stocked bar). The menu was way overpriced. Me and my girl friend had a salad , 2 appitizers , 1 entre and 3 drinks. The waiter had forgotten to give my my third drink, despite no one being in the restaurant. I was there few times to eat. But yesterday was a "robbery " when it comes to final price. We came evening sat downstairs and ordered food. We had salad, avocado from special menu, and artichokes as appetizers.For main menu we had fish seas bass with rice I didn't even ask for rice (I don't like to eat fish with rice) and my husband had veal with vinegar (too much vinegar) and my son half portion of spaghetti marinara. For drinks we had sparkling water 3 glasses with a bit of juice in it for my son to have better flavor. I had 2 Proseccos. The final bill came with already included 20% tip for the guy who served us! It never ever happened before but this time he added it on him own! Maybe is new rules but he should let us know before. Whole experience i wouldn't give 20% coz I didn't feel like it was deserved when it comes to serving. Final price was 230$ ... not sure what costed what as the bill was messy. A pleasant surprise is my first reaction when thinking about my visit to Matteo's restaurant. My review is based on their party room downstairs and not a standard dinner upstairs. Matteo's is the first thing you see when you get off of the Cross Bay Boulevard exit going eastbound on the Belt Parkway. I've passed it so many times but never thought about eating here until i was invited to my friend's son's christening party. Parking is pretty easy because there is always something available on the street, parking in their little community lot is a bit of a pain because it's shared with a bank ans a couple of other businesses so it fills up pretty fast. When you walk through the glass doors you have the bar and restaurant on the ground level and the party room down the stairs. Decor downstairs is standard at best. Nothing really stood out to say it was very nice or very bad. The best thing about Matteo's by far is the food! For this party, we started off with chopped salad, lightly touched with oil and vinegar which tasted great. Appetizers were outstanding with lightly fried calamari with the perfect marinara's sauce, baked clams seasoned to perfection and battered and fried zucchini strings that were so good i almost hogged it up for myself! This is also a good time to mention that the food served at Matteo's is done "family style" with the exception of the pasta and the salad. Family style means the apps and main courses are served in giant trays and left on the table for everyone to pick at on their own! This is perfect because if you eat more than someone else you won't look like a pig for it! The pasta was the next course, and it's not often that a restaurant serving for a large party gets it right, but my penne was al dente just the way i love it and the sauce was fantastic! I have to disagree strongly with Janice D's assessment of the sauce, it was so good i had to ask what was in it. It turns out Matteo's produces it's own sauce and uses onion and bacon to make it just a little sweeter than your usual ragu, and trust me when i say it was great! I was just about full before the main courses were served, but when they came out i had to find some more room! A gigantic bowl with chicken and sausage mixed with roasted potatoes and veggies made it's way to me and i was in heaven. I had a couple of jumbo shrimp and ignored the veal marsala because this giant concoction was so good. Dessert was pretty lackluster, as the coffee made it's way to us late and other than the cake the small plate of fruit was anticlimactic for an otherwise amazing meal. The food is on point, they offer traditional Italian appetizers and entrees, as well as specials, and are always trying or adding new things. For appetizers we ordered stuffed artichokes (the stuffing was great) and shrimp oreganata (butterfly cut everyone loved it). One person ordered the Lobster dish for themselves (they loved it) We also ordered string bean salad (it was flavorful and the dressing was very good). We also ordered spaghetti, meatballs, fettuccine alfredo and chicken francese (its was so soft and the sauce was sooooo good. It paired well with the fettuccine Alfredo). For drinks we had a Pinot noir red wine and asked for any white wine they had. It was such a nice wine that we had to ask to see the bottle and we took a pic. They gave us Mirassou Moscato. I cannot believe that I haven't reviewed Matteos yet. I come here about once a week on average for some of the best Italian food in all of the Burroughs. They do everything exceptionally well here with family style portions (you can order half or full orders) with everything cooked fresh to order. If you are a fan of basic Italian like spaghetti and meatballs - it doesn't get any better than this. I consider myself a bit of a meatball aficionado and these are some of the best you will get anywhere. The only downside is sometimes they run out of meatballs (they run out because they are freshly made, not pre-made/frozen garbage!). They typically have specials as well featuring different fish dishes which have proven to be great as well. Make the trip out to Howard Beach, you will not be disappointed. read more

My family and I celebrated my godson's 1st Birthday here. The party was held in their upstairs private room. The room is very spacious and easily fit our 9 tables with more than enough "elbow room". The dance floor and mini stage splits the room with tables on both sides. The dance floor came in handy for the kids to dance and the stage was useful for the entertainers to set up their things. The staff at Matteo's are so nice! I went early to help my sister in law decorate and they were more than willing to assist us with the table decorations and balloons. Anything we needed. Food was family style. Started off with a salad, 3 different appetizers (baked clams, stuffed mushrooms and fried calamari), a pasta, and 3 main dishes (Chicken Matteo's, Veal Marsala, and Matteo's signature Shrimp Luciano over sauteed spinach). The food was good but I have had better. The salad was soggy and the shrimp felt over cooked. The Chicken Matteo's was my favorite out of all of them....Chicken on the bone with sauteed peppers, onions, broccoli, sausage, potatoes and garlic. The only feedback I would give is not to serve it on the bone. It makes it difficult to eat. I got a wing piece and I did not feel it was appropriate to eat with my hands. Eating a chicken wing with a fork and knife is an acquired skill I have not yet mastered. The flavor on the chicken reminded me of my grandma's oven roasted herb chicken. With the package my in laws selected, we had red and white wine on the table, soda and beer. Every time a bottle finished on our table, they immediately brought over a new bottle. My husband was drinking beer and each time he asked for another within seconds he had another cold beer. The staff was super attentive and extremely polite. I am a dessert lover! Matteo's hand whipped Napoleon cake was out of this world!!! The cream was super light and fluffy with just the right amount of sweetness. You can taste it was fresh and home made. The pastry was super crispy and flaky. I tried to get another piece because I LOVED it so much but they ran out. The wait staff came around with cappuccinos, cafe americano and espresso (single shot or double shots). Matteo's helped make my godson's birthday party a huge success. We all had a great time.
