Matthew's is one of my favorite restaurants in town! Definitely call ahead and let them know if you're having a special event because they will make sure you feel extra special. Reservations aren't required but helpful. The bar area is pretty casual so if you just feel like popping in because you're in the neighborhood but you're not sure if you're dressed well enough... like you can totally stop in and hang in there because their espresso martinis are one of my favorites! And their happy hour is definitely the best time go. We normally go for the different Chef's tasting adventures which are coursed out meals with or without wine pairings... Just because it's fun to be surprised and try new things sometimes. They try to accommodate all allergies and you can always order things "on the side" if you're not sure about it which I love because I can be picky... sometimes ;) If I order off the menu, I normally order either their seasonal preparation of the scallops or the aged steak because the toppings and salts that come with their steak are amazing! And if you only order one thing on their menu... make sure it's the souffle! Their souffle is always cooked perfectly to order no matter what flavor they are serving and the creme anglaise that they always serve it with is so silky and completes it just perfectly. I doubt this review will even scratch the surface of how satisfied and pleased my husband and I were during our date night at Matthew's. I called the restaurant a few weeks prior to our set date night, my husband's birthday, and spoke to Cricket on the phone about their chefs tasting menu. She was fabulous with explaining what we could expect and booked our reservation for us. When we arrived, from the moment we pulled up to valet, every single aspect of our dining experience was thought about and intentional. We grabbed a round of drinks at the bar (espresso martini is to die for) then headed to the dining room where Caroline was our server. She couldn't not have been more educated & welcoming during our time. I simply was over the moon with the food, service, cleanliness and ambiance of Matthew's. We went to Matthew's for a special family occasion. I chose this restaurant as it is one of the best in Jax in my humble opinion. Street parking is tight so we used the valet parking option. We were greeted by name from the valet all the way to our waitstaff. We appreciated the extra special touches for service including the bread selection, butter with olive oil and pink salt, selection of citrus slices for our glasses of water. The drink menu was extensive. The food was expertly made and portion sizes were perfect. Dessert was decadent. We liked the upscale vibe of the restaurant with view of the kitchen. I highly recommend this restaurant for a special occasion for an intimate dinner where you want to impress your guest(s). The price is on the more expensive side but in this case, I think you get what you pay for. I haven't tried the chef's tasting menu yet but will definitely have to return to try it. read more

Wildly disappointed in the service and the food. The plating of all dishes seems to be from a graduate from fscj culinary program. Flavorless lifeless not one dish out of 6 made me think I can't wait to come back here. The most authentic person FOH was the hostess and the waiters assistant. The timing of the meal ruined the entire experience of what this restaurant should be delivering for the price point. Matthew's is without a doubt Jacksonville's flagship fine dinning restaurant. The attention to detail and excellent service starts with their valet and continues with the rest of the staff. The decoration is simple and elegant with a kitchen that integrates with the dinning room allowing diners to view where the magic occurs. We opted to decide on our 3 courses, and I particularly went for some of Caroline's favourite (our server) the foie gras. My other choices included the steak tartare and the scallops. He is absolutely fabulous. I told him I was going to rave about him on my review so here it is. Mah Wife got me the most excellent early Christmas gift tonight: a 6-course Chef's Adventure tasting menu dinner at Matthew's Restaurant in the San Marco neighborhood (@dinematthews). I had no idea what the menu would be; we just sat back, relaxed, enjoyed each other's company, and let the chef and staff take care of us for a couple of hours. This menu took us on a wonderful journey through land and sea, sweet and savory. From service to final presentation, everything was thoughtful and intentional; each course building on the previous. Early courses were light and delicate, middle courses dove into the deep end of umami, until finally, a sweet finish. So without further adieu, the six courses: 1. Crispy Jasmine rice crisp topped with crab salad, tomato jam, and lemon vinaigrette 2. U8 Maine diver scallop, green apple sphere, chestnut Velouté, maple syrup drizzle 3. Mafaldine house-made pasta with anchovy brown butter sauce, chanterelle mushrooms, and Parmesan Reggiano cheese (my favorite of the courses) 4. Amazing fine dining experience in Jax! Just moved here from GNV so excited by all of the food options. I tried the beet salad, the charred eggplant, and the fish of the day was a halibut. I ordered a side of scallops just to try them and they were delicious. Every bite of each dish was great, and the service was next level. I had heard that Matthew's is an amazing place from multiple people, and I'm glad it lived up to the hype. Had our anniversary dinner here. Overall the service and food were pretty great. Started off with a customized menu that we got to keep at the end of the evening. Started off with the roasted beet salad and the snow crab salad. The beet salad wasn't too special but the crab salad was amazing. Great crab chunks! The second course was the charred eggplant that was charred perfectly. For the entree, I ordered the Fish of the evening which was a sea bass. My SO ordered the Veal chop. The sea bass had an edge on the chop. The fish was soft and flakey and we paired it with caviar. The perfect bite was the fish, puree, broccolini and a bit of caviar on top. The chop was cooked well but could do without the jam topping. We also had a side of the Brussel sprouts which was crispy and delicious. We ended the evening with their soufflé. Pretty good but not the best I've had. The restaurant is quaint and intimate with an open kitchen. I enjoyed watching the magic happen. I have nothing at all but the highest remarks when it comes to Matthews. We sat at the chefs table and had an amazing time. It was quite the experience. We watched the food being prepped. The cooks in the kitchen explained several of the dishes to us. We were treated to extra bites (sample tasting). The food was amazing. When we arrived we were immediately greeted with a very polite staff member and served chilled water. We opted to sit in the bar and Joshua served us. Made a reservation for my birthday and my husband, and we were extremely pleased with the tasting menu with wine pairing. Our server Peter was excellent. He paid attention to detail and was very knowledgeable regarding our food and wine. Unfortunately, the ambience was disrupted by noise. My husband and I were still able to enjoy each other's company by sitting extremely close to each other so we could hear our conversation. My wife and I went to Matthew's to celebrate our wedding anniversary (36 years) for the third year in a row! Our meal was delicious, all six courses; plus an order of escargot was added because it is always prepared very tastefully. For Valentines this year, we chose to return to Matthew's for the first time in many years. To make it special we decided to go for the 6 course Chef's tasting menu, which I understand changes weekly. We started with a smoked Old Fashioned and a glass of Prosecco, but didn't include the wine pairings since previous experiences with multi-course dinners has left us with an opinion that a different wine with each course tends to detract from the food experience - and we are all about the food. For this particular date, the first course was an amuse bouche - a mutli-ingredient mix of seafood and seasonings that was perfectly balanced. Next came Maine Diver Scallops, perfectly seared and served on a curry with just a little heat. The pasta course was of course house made pasta with a braised pork shoulder sauce and topped with goat cheese. Surprisingly, the goat cheese made the entire dish exceptional. Main course was an Australian Wagyu Ribeye steak on a tomato based ratatouille. While it was perfectly cooked and tender, I still don't perceive anything very special about Wagyu every time I have had it in various restaurants. Finally for dessert there was a vanilla bread pudding with creme anglaise and cream cheese. As expected, Matthew's delivered a an excellent food and service experience. If you can afford a meal that will come in north of $300 for 2 people on a special occasion, the experience is worth it. read more

It's omakase-style so you won't know what you're having. 1st Course - Tuna Crudo with orange segments, orange fennel, radish, puff rice (enjoyed this) 2nd Course - Blue Lump Crab cake with sriracha aioli and pickled onions (my favorite) 3rd Course - Creamy Polenta with brown butter mushrooms, poached egg, chive oil 4th Course - Lamb Chop with roasted Romanesco, spinach purée, paprika oil, farro (I prefer medium, but this was still too rare for me) 5th Course - St. Nectaire, Olive tapenade, herb focaccia 6th Course - Chocolate tart and Mascarpone moose (tasted like dark chocolate which I didn't care much of) I was skeptical when my wife wanted to book this tasting menu. I have been wanting to try a tasting menu in any restaurant and decided to go with with Matthew's mainly due to good reviews and no need to pre-pay. I know it was going to be pricey, so what better way to splurge than to celebrate a special occasion. So I finally convinced my husband and made a reservation for our anniversary. The six-course adventure tasting menu was indeed a surprise since the food will be revealed as they serve. I was already expecting small portions of food but it was really a few bites per course lol. Good thing I ate 2 pieces of bread before the main event. Also, I ate and chew slooooowly to savor each meal :) The 6 courses were the ff: Tuna Crudo - very light and tasty! Crab Cake - delicious! It was just all crab and amazing seasoning! Polenta with brown butter mushrooms- simple yet flavorful! Lamb Chops - this was just okay for me. I know my husband would've wanted more lol St. Nectaire - forgot to take a picture of this. But it's a baked Brie cheese on a sourdough bread with a balsamic glaze. I enjoyed this. Chocolate Tart with masculine mousse - did not really wow me. Excellent service but I was not really impressed with the food, I guess because I had high expectations. Wow ! Matthews ! We came for Valentine's Day with 6 people. It was a nice vibe ! The service was 5* - the food was even better - you can't wear a ball cap here and that was saddest part of the whole experience. I think that should be changed - we had a closely set menu but enough choices to pick from from all 4 courses. The starter bread and butter was a nice surprise! A great wine selection as well. The martini was great too. We started with the Lamb Carpaccio - soooo good ! 2nd dish was the lobster bisque! Best thing I had! Followed that with the diver scallops ! Also really good ! We decided to go here for my birthday which proved to be a perfect occasion! I decided that I wanted to do the Chef's tasting adventure. We choose to do the 6-course experience and added on the wine pairings. You do have the option to add extra courses on but honestly, I don't think you need it. We were stuffed after our 4th course! For a tasting menu we found the portions to be very generous. Everything was absolutely incredible and we loved the wines that were paired with the meal. Our server was AMAZING and made it a truly standout occasion. The personalized menu which was then signed by the staff was such a thoughtful and special touch! Matthew's is a beautiful slightly hidden restaurant in Jax. Located in the San Marco area behind the new Publix shopping center. My friends and I went to experience the 6 course dinner but opted to order off the menu instead and return another night for the dinner. I had the catch of the day and when I say I cleaned my plate! I cleaned my plate! The entire meal was delicious! I also ordered a very simple but cute drink and it tasted like a drinkable dessert. The service was great! Matthew's 4 star rating is based on the food, which was excellent. The presentation and plating also were impressive. The issue we had, though, was with the slow pace of the service, which is why the rating is not 5/5. It seemed like it took way too long between different courses in the tasting menu. The excuse from the restaurant was that they had a few very large parties that evening. We eventually just gave up and left - they did box up a few additional items, which we didn't eat. Matthew's adventure tasting menu is certainly an experience of a lifetime! It's 6 courses inspired by whatever the chef decides that week. My particular week was Italy. There is an option to do a wine pairing, and we chose to do so. You can also add in an additional dish from the regular menu, which we also did! The wagyu beef certainly lived up to the hype! The waiter was extremely knowledgeable of all the food origins and wine. I loved hearing his stories and the information. The service was really great, and there were several waiters who walked around only with bread or water for refills. This restaurant is towards the pricier side, but the cuisine is worth it!
