The vibe is lively, and the staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming they even surprised the table with a complimentary order of fried crab claws with garlic aioli that were absolutely delicious. For my main course, I had the trio fried platter with fish, scallops, and shrimp, accompanied by hush puppies, fries, and coleslaw. You can truly taste the freshness in every single bite; everything is locally caught by their own fishermen. I've always had a great experience eating at North Beach Fish Camp. Downstairs is usually crowded, so my favorite place to eat is upstairs. Even if the restaurant is packed, you can usually get a spot at the bar to eat. And if you sit upstairs, you get a nice view out of the windows. They have different specials all the time, and on our last visit, they had fried crab claws with a yummy dipping sauce. On this last visit, we just had drinks and appetizers, but on previous visits, I've tried a lot of the fish dishes on the menu and have liked them all. They also have good hush puppies. Their mixed drinks are good as well. I can't remember the names of the two I tried (in the photos), but they were refreshing. My husband had an espresso martini, but instead of vodka, he had them make it with the O'Kahan Agave Mezcal Purple Heart, which is something you have to ask for. It's a different twist on the usual espresso martini. Overall, it's good food in a good spot right on the corner in the Beaches Town Center. Unfamiliar with great eats options in Jax, I relied on a coworker who is local to offer up a suggestion. I went with him here and loved it. Parking will cost you (think it was $8 for 3 hours) but there's plenty of parking options. The restaurant sits on the corner and faces towards the beach (although you can't see the beach). It was pretty packed inside and a reservation is recommended. I liked the busy atmosphere. We started with a modelo and oysters. There were some beers on tap they ran out of for the evening. The oysters were good, but shall we than I expected. I opted for their snapper special: pan seared over jasmine rice with string green beans and a nice sauce underneath. It came out looking like a 5 star meal and tasted as such. One of the best red snapper entrees I've had!. It's hard not to give 5 stars when the fish is this amazing! Had a reservation for a party of 8 on a Friday evening and requested to upstairs. The view is better from upstairs and it's also quieter than down so easier to chat with the group. Our servers were friendly but busy and it took a little bit to get our drinks and apps. Ordered an assortment of apps including fried green tomatoes, oysters, and pimento cheese. They were easy to share and a good start to the meal. Entrees we had a variety as well- some had the salmon, others the fish special (Turbot), and 1 had the broiled seafood platter. I personally love the salmon entree with the sautéed spinach and potatoes. The salmon was cooked perfectly, and I love the hollandaise on top. I would definitely recommend getting a reservation here because it gets really busy! Also because if you're celebrating something, they have a cute little board with your name on it in the front! The grilled octopus & white bean salad was really nice and light. The texture of the octopus was decent too for being grilled. After our appetizer, it did take quite a while for our entrees to come. But again they were pretty busy so it was understandable. Just be aware if you're waiting on timed parking! We didn't realize until after, but apparently valet parking is validated here! I really liked the sauce of the spicy seafood linguine. The spice is pretty subtle, and overall the dish was basically clam pasta with some extra seafood. I really liked the scallops in this dish. The broiled seafood platter was probably my favorite of the night. All of the seafood was delicious of course, but the potatoes were kind of the highlight for me. They were super creamy, especially when they absorbed all the seafood juices. I will say though, in the moment, nothing tasted too salty, but going home, I was sooo thirsty the rest of the night. The workers are super friendly too, making sure to check on us every once in a while. I've been numerous times over the years, this latest visit was for a large birthday party- so large, we basically took over the upstairs! Quay was our personal server and I think he was our bartender too- although there was another person back and forth behind the bar. I had the cod served over coconut jasmine rice with a coconut sweet potato purée - absolutely outstanding. The dining room hums with energy, the servers have the rhythm of regulars and tourists alike, and the specials sound intriguing enough to suggest ambition. But ambition, as we found out, does not always pay off. The appetizer, Scallops Rockefeller, arrived in their own shells, a clever nod to the original. Rich, decadent, and neatly plated, they promised much more than they delivered. These were bay scallops, not sea scallops, tiny in size and small in impact. Four bites in total, more amuse bouche than appetizer, and at odds with the grandeur of the name. My entrée, a ribeye topped with pimento cheese, Cheerwine BBQ sauce, and onion straws, was another case of more being less. Each element had merit on its own; the pimento cheese with a sharp bite, the BBQ sauce sweet and smoky, the onion straws adding crunch. Together, though, they fought for attention, overwhelming the steak and one another. I ended up scraping the cheese into a pile, wondering why it had been there at all. The steak itself, cooked to mid-rare, was fine but underseasoned. The sauce saved it from mediocrity, though not entirely. The broiled seafood platter across the table fared better. Shrimp and scallops cooked well, their flavors deepened by butter. The cod, unfortunately, leaned too far into dryness. Satisfying enough, though not memorable. At $130 for two, North Beach Fish Camp positions itself as an upscale neighborhood spot. That positioning is fair, but the execution lags behind the promise. The setting suggests refinement, the plates suggest restraint might serve them better. 3 out of 5 stars A place with charm and energy, but not enough on the plate to justify the price. read more

I then had Seared Yellow Fin Tuna (blackened and blue). OMG!!! The Asian inspired sauce was spot on, and the salad was a perfect side. I will be having that again! My friend ordered the Salmon BLT, which he said is always good. It looked really good, but I was in heaven so I didn't ask for a bite. Lol This was my second meal downstairs, at the bar. I used to absolutely love this place. It was our go-to for seafood, celebrations, family dinners, and special occasions for years. We recommended it constantly and genuinely enjoyed supporting them. Unfortunately, after our last few experiences, that loyalty is completely gone. The problems really started during a dinner visit with my spouse. We had a reservation for two and specifically requested a booth because my spouse has herniated discs and booths are much easier on her back. The hostess with glasses told us there were "no booths available for parties of two," so we were seated at a tiny two-top directly in front of an empty booth. Minutes later, another couple - who apparently didn't even have the correct downstairs reservation because Wheel House was closed for a private event - was seated in that exact booth instead. When I politely questioned it, I was told they were "accommodating them." Interesting, because apparently accommodating a medical issue for customers with a reservation didn't matter. Still, we decided to give the restaurant another chance for Mother's Day. To their credit, we were seated at a booth this time after I both noted it in the reservation and called ahead to confirm it. Our waiter was someone we immediately recognized from a previous visit, and my parents mentioned he had waited on us before at that same table. Somehow, from that comment alone, he became convinced we were related to Chef Tim Tillus. From there, things got bizarre. He kept talking about "Timmy," mentioning reunions and saying he used to live with him. The restaurant was extremely loud, and my father had forgotten his hearing aids that day, so honestly we could barely understand what he was talking about. We just smiled politely and focused on asking about the menu because we truly had no clue where the conversation was going. Eventually, he came back and realized we were NOT Chef Tim Tillus' family. He then explained that the kitchen staff had apparently been laughing because the chef saw us and said, "That's not my family." So somehow this became a whole ordeal in the kitchen over a completely innocent misunderstanding. We laughed awkwardly because what else do you do at that point? But honestly, the whole interaction felt strange and unprofessional. Unfortunately, the food was even worse than the awkward service. My spouse ordered the all-day seafood soup, and somehow there was basically ZERO seafood in it. That alone was shocking because their soups used to be incredible. My father ordered the broiled platter, and the portion size was honestly embarrassing for a $29 dish. His parsley potatoes consisted of literally five tiny cubes - my mother counted them because we were in disbelief. We have eaten here for years and NEVER saw portions this small. I ordered the fish special, and it was nothing like described. It was supposed to have pecans and blackening seasoning. There were no pecans, no blackening seasoning, and the fish itself was dry, bland, overcooked, and flavorless. For $32, I was served what looked like a tiny sad pile of fish in the middle of a giant empty plate. The pork chop looked beautiful but tasted absolutely awful. At this point I honestly don't know if the kitchen quality has completely collapsed or if nobody is checking food before it leaves the line anymore. Either way, it was terrible. My mother ordered scallops on the half shell as her meal - something she has enjoyed there many times before. This time, the scallops were tiny and somehow greasy. It was shocking these dishes were even leaving the kitchen. What makes this so disappointing is that we truly loved this restaurant. We weren't casual customers. We supported this place for years because we believed the food and experience were worth it. This wasn't just a mediocre meal or an "off night." This was a genuinely terrible dining experience from start to finish, made worse by the fact that it happened on Mother's Day. The service felt awkward and disorganized, the portions were insulting, the food quality was awful, and there seemed to be zero quality control happening anywhere. At this point, our money will be supporting other establishments instead. It's honestly sad because this place USED to be special. I sincerely hope management fixes the kitchen, consistency, and overall professionalism before even more longtime customers walk away. read more

The crew I was with shared the fish spread, not really my thing, I do think I'll try the calamari next time. Great drinks and beer on the menu. Two of my favorite IPAs featured here with Sierra Nevada Hazy IPA and I-10. North Beach also features their own that I'll probably try on my next visit.
