For Matto, you pay for the quality. I actually think the pastries are better than some of their coffee drinks because they are made in advance and not thrown together. It's all about speed for Matto so they reheat their pastries almost to a crisp and will have it out for you in seconds. I think it serves a purpose for a fast, easy spot where a quick and filling cheese bureka or egg croissant sandwich (for $2 opposed to $5-7 at other coffee shops in nyc) can do the trick. They've been open a year and a half. I've been going to grad school a year and a half. I am just discovering this location now. For shame. I love Matto and am so happy that this is right here on campus, but so inconspicuous. I got an almond milk latte, added some cinnamon, and was very grateful for their half-Starbucks pricing ($2.83). Their coffee is good, I'd say Pret-level, and the latte was made pretty well. It's a little too bitter and not quite as smooth as other places, but still did the trick and I enjoyed it. $2 everything. Need I say more? Anyway. The coffee is pretty good. Same quality as Starbucks but for like a third of the price. And, the alternative milks and flavor shots are free. Speaking of drinks, allow me to put you on to something: hot matcha latte with oat and a shot of vanilla. Just fantastic. The food is also quite good. I go here almost every day so I've amassed a pretty comprehensive list of what's good. Here are the food items I consider my favorites. In terms of savory food, the potato and spinach burekas are top tier. For sweets, the pumpkin loaf, pistachio muffin, and brookie are my favorites. When you order through the app, it can sometimes take a bit to get the text that your drink is being prepared, but the turnaround between getting the text and getting your food is extremely short. (Usually the longest wait is when NYU classes go on break and everyone runs to this store.) The staff is also extremely kind and understanding, so if you let them know that you've been waiting for your drink, they'll expedite the process and just make it for you. There is no place to sit inside, and the interior is very small. Very much a grab-and-go situation. The outdoor seating situation is also kind of small, but there are a few metal cafe tables/chairs, and a bench. I've never seen all of the seats here be filled, even when there was a line out the door. read more

I ordered an iced matcha latte on the app this morning (4/20/23) and waited in-store for the barista to finish making a previous customer's matcha latte. Hers was a vibrant green. Several minutes later I was handed mine, which was surprisingly VERY LIGHT in weight. I confirmed with the barista this was a matcha latte, and she said yes. It nearly looked like a vanilla milkshake in color and was 90% foam. I took 2-3 sips (frothy foam) and I was practically done with the drink. Every other Matto has much better quality, so I'd avoid this location. read more

I can't believe how a business can thrive at this price point in NYC!! I haven't tried their cakes and pastries yet, but I had coffee for the first time yesterday. I had a large, almond latte to-go. Matto has free upsize and free substitution to nut milk. I usually have to pay $6 for this drink in nearby coffees. It tasted just fine, a bit watery but I don't mind because I was happy with the price I paid. I ordered on their app to save time and because they offered a $5 credit when you first download it. There are no seats at this location, only a standing table for a quick espresso slurp. Again, who cares. I have found my affordable caffein fix for my afternoon classes! read more

It's with a heavy heart I post this review. I've been coming here for a year, it's been great, but MY GOD what is going on with the cold brew? I have a high tolerance for mediocre coffee, I take it black and savor the mediocrity, but it tasted like gasoline. When I mentioned this to a friend, that person said it sounded like the batch went bad and knew a person (still alive) who was poisoned by bad coffee. This was last week. So cute! In a neighborhood that has lost a lot of reasonably priced delis to make way for overpriced salad spots, Matto is a welcome addition. I've quickly made this my go-to for a quick, light lunch or afternoon snack. The carrot cake is delicious (though I wish they had something other than the little paper bags so all the icing doesn't come off). I love love love the spinach and cheese bourakas. The Veggie burgers are fine; let them grill there, they don't do well in the microwave. The coffee is good. I found that the iced chai had a funny aftertaste and probably won't get again. I noticed they have an "Office box" of mixed pastries, which is so smart. I'll definitely get one for my next big meeting. The service is always fast and friendly. I went in on a rainy day and unfortunately this place has no seating, and it's really small (can only probably fit 3-4 customers at a time). Therefore, I had to make the trip quick. I got a regular cappuccino which was amazing- very smooth. As for pastries, I couldn't decide between savory and sweet. Everything looked good! This is one of my favorite coffee shops near the NYU campus, and for $2 for any drink, or any pastry/snack, the quality is great! They have a variety of alternative milks there (soy, oat, almond), and a variety of drinks. I usually go for a latte with almond milk, an iced coffee, or a hot coffee. Their hot coffee is any size for still $2 and decent quality. Some of my favorite snacks include: the banana bread, gluten-free power bar, multi-grain croissant breakfast sandwich, and any of the muffins. It's nice that they also have vegan options as well! It can get quite cramped in there and sometimes there is a line out the door, but the employees inside work quickly, so the line goes by fast. If you preload a $20 card, you also get a free drink. As a student on a budget, Matto has great quality for price. read more

This is my second Matto Espresso location I've visited and not surprised by their lack of seating being on the NYU campus. Beware of busy mornings since it'll leave you standing outside in the cold. Not a big fan of their espresso but if you need an affordable boost to your day, would recommend coming here. Their pastries and baked goods are tasty! Most locations should be able to warm them up for you if you ask. I'd also recommend getting a reloadable giftcard if you find yourself visiting their locations more than three times- less worry each time to find cash ($4 card minimum! It's not 3rd wave, hipster, fun latte art amazing, but its great affordable coffee that doesnt remind you of its price point. It's probably on top on the cheap coffee game around NYC. My latte was made fresh and the coffee cake was 1.5x the size of a sbux coffee cake. While the coffee cake was a tad drier than i like, it did have walnuts in it. Latte tasted fine at $2. You can't get any better than this at this price point. Dunkin and Mcdonalds are around the corner, but pass them and try this place! read more

Those are like 2 for 1$. anyway... yes Matto is a dream come true, especially this location practically on NYU campus (if it had a campus... no one can convince me any range of blocks around Greenwich Village can be called a campus). This may be the sole thing that keeps me going through the rest of my academic career at NYU. I always get a large iced coffee, something savory, and something sweet. This has ranged from mini lox bagels and lasagna to carrot cake loafs and chocolate souffles. Seriously Matto is unreal. I have never tried anything and not liked it- and even if I didn't- that's a risk I'm willing to take for 2$. Card minimum is 4$ but you'd be a sucker to come in and only get one item. I had an iced latte, and a lemon donut. Both decent. They don't have just "standard" pastries but look out for "vegan" gluten free and other limitations. I always get a large iced coffee with oat milk before class, sometimes an additional banana bread or plain croissant. You have to pay with cash unless you get two items or more, and with tax it only amounts to $2.18 per item. While the space is small and can be a little crowded, the service is great especially if you're someone always on the go. read more
