As a massive fan of barbecue and BBQ sauce being one of my favorite substances of all time, I had been frequently wanting to visit so when my friend brought me, I was pretty hyped. I got the ribs and they literally fell of the bone: amazing. The flavor was great, the portion size filled my perfectly and I thought the price was great, especially since meat usually isn't cheap and the sauce and seasonings were fantastic. If you visit, you MUST try the Cherry Chipotle BBQ sauce. I loved it and it no joke elevated the dish, it's awesome. The location is great, there is no human contact, you must order from the tablet thing, but when I did see them, they were kind. The pods are a nice place with a great bar nearby. Oh my goodness the barbecue here is just great. If you go on weekends, you can get their burn ends which are like melting your mouth candy. Otherwise I really like their brisket and their Mac and cheese. These guys are so popular. They have their own ordering kiosk in a food cart pod, which makes things easier but maybe a bit confusing as you tend to want to go up to the window instead of the kiosk that's 10 feet away. There's a lot of tables in the food cart pod as well as alcohol vendors. If that's your thing parking can be a bit crazy as there is a neighborhood around the pod and you may have to walk a bit. read more

Didn't get a great picture of all the meats but if you see how much salads we got just imagine we got way more meats. So my partner and I came to the Mississippi Marketplace food truck pod because there's a cart nearby that has gluten free meals for her. I looked around the pod and decided to give Matt's BBQ a try. I enjoy BBQ but am not a fanatic by any stretch of the imagination, and there seemed to be a lot of people lined up for it, so I assumed it had to be good. I didn't realize that this was a somewhat famous BBQ joint. I found out about it by people chattering around me and had high hopes. I wasn't super hungry but I was super curious. So I went ahead and got a jalapeno cheddar sausage, a 1/2 lb of pulled pork, and an order of tortilla chips and queso. The ordering system is pretty nice, especially considering the cramped area. You stand in line to get to a computer screen, whereby you order what you want. They also list how many portions they have left of an item, which can give you an idea of what's most popular or what you need to hurry to get (to avoid online orders). The order is then sent to the kitchen, where they call your number when it's ready to pick up. The sausage alone cost almost five bucks and the pulled pork was almost 10, but I get that these are sort of the going rates. Still, chips and queso was 7.50 and I didn't notice anything spectacular about that. The sausage -was- very good though. It was juicy and had a good heat to it. I enjoyed it quite a bit. The pulled pork though was just...pulled pork. I tried all the different sauces available, and nothing really stood out for me. I love heat and spice and didn't feel too rewarded, but nothing was particularly bad nor good. It was pretty average, altogether. You do get quite a bit of food. I shared with a couple sitting next to me (it's Portland; you talk to strangers and share on the street. It's what we do!) and still had a bunch left over. I couldn't share with my partner, because although all of it was gluten free itself, the opportunity for cross-contamination with the bread in the cart itself was high. I wasn't blown away by the truck, but there was nothing wrong about it. I just felt very underwhelmed. Still, you get a lot, it's fresh, and there's a lot of variety. Apologies to the Matt loyalist but I am not a fan . I almost feel bad writing that I did not like it as much because I know this food cart has a special place in the city`s heart and perhaps that is to blame for my high expectations. Came for lunch during weekend and as expected there was a long line , it was actually the longest line at any of the carts in that pod , which only made me more excited to try them out .We mentally decided what to pick based of the menu on the truck and It was a small wait of around 15 minutes before we could order at the kiosk . By the time we got there they were out of a few things we wanted to try . Nevertheless, we ordered from what they had left and then the wait began. We hung out at a neighboring cart and ordered some drinks and the food took almost 30 minutes+ . We had - Pork ribs Pulled Pork Mac n Cheese Coleslaw Now nothing we tried was bad not even close to bad, but I just did not feel that anything really blew my mind or if it was the best BBQ I have ever had in Portland. Perhaps it was the choice of meat but I just found everything mediocre. They have a sauce station that you can pick and choose from ,but the sauces felt slightly watered down .The meat was extremely well cooked and did fall of the bone as expected . I went there for my first time and got the Burnt Ends. They are made of pork belly kind of what bacon is made of. Excellent warm dipping sauce that came with it and 5 others to choose from. Thought they would be a little more burnt like most I have had but these where nice chunks of meat/juicy fat layers. Fun to peal apart. Went into Prost and knocked down a few brews with lunch. Order ahead of time for the ends they were all gone by 12.15 that day. Need to back for more when I'm on that side of town. read more

Since we were just in town visiting we wanted to try as much as we could. -Ribs: were ok, not terrible by any means but I would not rush back -Brisket: tender meat, good flavor. -Brisket sandwich: yum! They have a good BBQ going on here. The slow cooked brisket and pork ribs are top notch. The sides are good and the prices are not totally out of line. The meaty ribs had a nice savory bark and fell off the bone, the wet sauce was tasty and served on the side. The brisket sandwich was also very good, I could of used more brisket. The coleslaw side was a little sweet for my liking. The only downside is the wait time, and the online service. You get a digital confirmation but unless you ask at the window, you do not know your place in the que or listening for your name as they yell it out - very confusing - other patrons were all questioning thier status. read more

One of my favorite bbq places in PDX! Legit smoked sliced brisket! Comes with 1 slice from the fattier point and two slices from the leaner flat. Good smoke ring and the fatty cut is so tender! I like how they serve the meat with sauce on side so you can taste the smokey perfection and add sauce flavor at your discretion. The jalapeno and cheese sausage is delicious and salty! The food cart pod on Mississippi where Matt's is located has a very nice area. Covered and open seating it is clean and pretty orderly. Matt's BBQ is darn good! We got 1/2 pound of pulled pork, 1/2 pound of chopped brisket, potato salad and an order of pickled cucumbers and onions. Both meats were juicy and succulent served with a sauce on the side. Available too is a selection of 4 other sauces, all delicious as well. I recommend on trying them all. The potato salad was good, above average from what you are served elsewhere. Definitely great bbq for portland. Not mind blowing Memphis bbq good, but definitely far above a lot of places. I wish the sandwiches weren't sold out bc it felt like a roll would be good with it. This place nailed the brisket, it was as good as any brisket I have had in Texas which is high praise. I had also ordered the pulled pork and a side of coleslaw. The pulled pork had nice smoke flavor, but the seasoning left me with a bit of an overly salty taste that needed to be tamed down with BBQ sauce and the coleslaw also a bit salty for me. Seasoning in BBQ is important and it's better to over-season than under-season, but maybe just a little less salt in some of these dishes and the overall meal could be 5 stars read more

My husband is a big bbq fan and so we ordered the pork spare ribs, sliced brisket, jalapeño cheddar sausage and an side of their potato salad and red onions and pickles. We also got a little bit of each of their homemade bbq sauces (peach mustard bbq, n.c. vinegar, cherry chipotle bbq and spicy mustard bbq). The meat here is melt in your mouth delicacy! It's located in NE Portland and tucked away in the back corner of a food pod area. There's also plenty of seating. I arrived here around 3PM and almost everything was sold out. I really wanted to try the pork belly burnt ends and beefy ribs - which is my favorite thing from Phil's Bbq in San Diego. My boyfriend and I shared 1/2 pound of beef brisket and 1/4 of pork belly along with two sides - potato salad and mac and cheese. Our platter also came with some pickles and slices of bread. This place is reasonable priced since all of that only costed $24! The pork belly was the highlight of the meal. It was so soft and decadent, just a bunch of goodness dissolving in your mouth! Both meat had such great flavored and was bbqed to perfection. The mac and cheese was really good! However, the potato salad wasn't throughly mixed and we had a few chunks of plain potato. Got the ribs with friends to share. For the first time since I've been coming to this food cart pod, there was no visible line of doom. The ribs were perfectly cooked and fell right off the bone. The pickles were a nice accompaniment to break up some of the richness. I tried a bunch of the sauces. They were all good, but I think the spicy BBQ and Carolina spicy vinegar were my favorite though I always like the latter. Solid TX BBQ. came twice in two days because they were sold out of everything besides chopped brisket and pork late Sunday afternoon. The chopped brisket and pulled pork was pretty good if you like those. The brisket was pretty moist and the better of the two. Personally I think the Costco pulled pork tastes more smoky. Both went well with bread and the brisket didn't need sauce. Day 2 I had moist brisket and the jalapeño cheddar sausage. As others point out, definitely don't cancel your pilgrimage to TX. Brisket was pretty good though I prefer my bark a bit rougher and the brisket even more moist throughout (wonder if they use Prime brisket like Franklin which I guess is cheating but oh so good) and actual fat. We dropped in on a Friday for lunch (around 12:45pm). There's plenty of picnic style seating but beware, it's all outdoors. They had a couple sauces including peach mustard, hog vinegar and garlic BBQ. The menu consists of meat, sandwiches, sides, shebangs and tacos. - The whole shebang for 2 ($25.00 US) - 1/4lb sliced brisket, 1/4 lb pulled pork, two ribs, sausage, slaw potato salad and beans. My favourite piece of meat was the jalapeño cheddar sausage. So tasty with a burst of flavour and slight kick. The ribs were well seasoned. I though the pulled pork was a touch dry. B really liked the sliced brisket; tender and juicy but slightly fatty on certain parts. The sides were bland and unmemorable. I did like the dill pickle and pickled red onion. Good but if I'm choosing BBQ, my preference/go to is still for The People's Pig. read more
