My favorite place in the city. I'm from Kansas City so I'm used to good BBQ and I miss the KC sides like Fries, Pit beans and white wonder bread. I always get the silver tray filled with good stuff. I don't shy away from my ordering. Pork ribs are phenomenal , the brisket burnt ends are phenomenal, pork belly burnt ends phenomenal, I tried both of the sausages now the regular sausage and the jalapeño cheddar both phenomenal. I think I'm gonna start getting the jalapeño cheddar more though. I just got it today for the first time. It was good here but I wish we got to try more! It was our fault for going a little late and they were already out of their ribs and most of their other food. We ended up getting two sausages, one being the jalapeño cheese, burnt tips, and the pulled pork. We got Mac and cheese for a side. Overall everything filled us up but not being able to try the ribs really put a damper. Also, wish they had more sides because we could've done with some fries or potatoes, corn, or even rice. Matt's BBQ on N Mississippi Ave is the best barbecue I've had in Oregon, and in the ranking of the top 3 best barbecue pork ribs I've ever had. Coming from a self-proclaimed barbecue connoisseur, that statement means something to me. The portions here are very generous and feel like a good value. I ordered the pork ribs because they only have beef ribs on the weekend (I went for lunch on a Monday) and was served four large spare ribs. Their pork ribs have an amazing and unique texture to them, where it is almost like candied jerky on the outside and juicy on the inside. They said it's a MOP recipe from Tutsy (apologies for any misspelling). It comes with a few sliced pickles which are refreshing, juicy, and well flavored. They have a sauce counter next to the order pickup window with four different bbq sauce pump options. These included Cherry Chipotle, Peach Mustard (my favorite, unlike anything I've every tried), Spicy Mustard (my second favorite), and Hog Vinegar. I liked how easy it was to try their different offerings. To order, you place an order on the iPad screen and then get a number. You then seat yourself on one of their wooden bench options, which they have both covered in the shade and in the sun, and wait for your number to be called. If you go with someone who doesn't eat bbq, they have other food stall options on both sides. Although I can't eat macaroni & cheese, everyone else was ordering it and it looks absolutely delicious. Who knew I'd find World-Class BBQ this far North of the Mason-Dixon Line? Matt's venue is more than modest - it's situated inside an old camper that's parked in a food-truck park. That said, the quality of the BBQ here will make you care not one whit about the ambiance; if I were British, I'd say their food positively Brilliant; it's easily the equal of some of the best BBQ restaurants in Texas, Tennessee, and the Carolinas. Most recently I ordered a pork-belly taco and a Cow Pig Stacker sandwich ( a pound of chopped brisket, and a a pound of pulled pork with slaw & pickles on a 3 layer bun). All three meats were smokey, juicy, and full of fabulous BBQ flavor, but my hands-down favorite was the pork belly. Saying that it was a helping of melt-in-your mouth Heaven would be an inderstandment, but it's the best I can do at the moment ;-) Even though Matt's is open seven days a week until 9pm, you should plan on visiting as early as possible, as they often run out of meats on a daily basis. Been looking for a BBQ joint in Portland. I had about Matt's so I thought I'd give then a try. I ordered online from my office and drove over to pick them up. Pretty short drive. When I arrived I noticed they have an iPad of sorts for ordering food. Doesn't look like you can order from the window. The food truck is in grouped together with other food trucks. Spacing is a bit tight but not unfamiliar to the PDX food truck scene. After about 10 minutes my order was up. Ordered two pork spare ribs plates with two sides of bbq beans and macaroni and cheese. They have an area where you pump a couple different sauces to take home and try. Did that too. The ribs had a delicious Smokey slightly sweet flavor. When we opened our carry out trays they were loaded with ribs. Two order totaling ten ribs. Wow!!! That's without any sauce. Don't think they were bbq'd today as the meet pulled off the bone too easily. I prefer a little tug. The bone itself was also softer then usual. But a very satisfying wasting experience The bbq beans were well cooked filled with smoked flavor and a little heat. Not sure what the source of heat was. The macaroni and cheese was one my highest marks. The cheese I'm guessing was a pepper Jack and cheddar mix and some other spices. It packed a nice spice kick that elevated the dish. Firstly, that beef brisket and pork ribs come right off the bone... so succulent and juicy. Those sauces they have go great with the meat too but you gotta get the bread on that sauce as well. I wish they'd toast it and you probably could as, but I didn't. The queso mac is also delicious with the beans on the side. So much food and such a tiny stomach, but worth every bite. We came here after eating at Eem and seeing they were related. The brisket and pulled pork are pretty great and I appreciate the slaw isn't heavy with Mayo but I'm still not sure if it was the slaw or pork that made my bun so soggy/drippy. The burnt ends were far more saucy than the sandwich meats are served, which was off-putting for me--I'm a meat speaks for itself kind of BBQ gal. The buns are FANtastic! Just perfection. The potato bread was meh compared to the buns. Queso Mac is as advertised and the potato salad is nice, tho I miss my eggs in there. These are the superior sides--we tried the beans and they were prohibitively salty. This has been on the wishlist for a long time, we've had Matt's bbq when they had a Beaverton location for a while, and we've had it at the taco location. Watching this on somebody feed Phil was the catalyst that finally got us to take the trip to come. There is a kiosk for making the order, which was fairly easy to do, there was a short lineup on a sunny Sunday around noon, approximately a 10 min wait to order. The food took about 15 minutes to come out, we sat on the patio of Prost with a beer in our hands while waiting. The food definitely did not disappoint. Brisket was juicy, flavorful, and just melts in your mouth, I had to fight off two creatures (aka my daughters) that kept on digging in for more. Pork belly also melt in your mouth, but kiddos didn't like the sight of the fat layers, so more for my wife and I. Potato bread was a bit dry, but works just fine with the meat and all the difference bbq sauces (which were all great). We got the Sliced Brisket, Pulled Pork, Original Sausage, and their homemade bread. The brisket was delicious! Suuuuper tender and fall-off-the-bone kind of meat with an amazing flavor. There were some sauces in the take out container and a bunch of sauces on the side which all enhanced the flavor. YUM! The sausage was delicious! A nice subtle smokiness to it with the sauces being a great addition too (which it probably doesn't even need). The pork was actually the most disappointing thing in all of our opinion LOL. It was flavorless unless we drenched it with the sauces, and it was dry. Probably would pass on this next time and just get the brisket and sausages. The bread was also meh. The hubby and I jumped on the Somebody Feed Phil bandwagon and looked like total tourists eager to try Matt's BBQ on our most recent visit to Portland. It's located on Mississippi, which is one of my favorite streets to walk down when visiting! We wanted to get out of the rain and took cover while having lunch. You order from a tablet, they call your name a few minutes later and it's outdoor covered seating that's all picnic tables. There are about 7 other trucks there to eat and drink what you'd like alongside Prost to grab a beer. We ordered a mix of things to try from the chopped brisket which was very good, rich and not overly fatty. The jalapeño cheddar sausage was our absolute favorite with a nice snap, not too spicy and paired really well with the mustard bbq sauce. The queso mac and cheese was a favorite of my husbands, though I could've done without. Unfortunately, my dinner visit made me extremely sad and it was literally so unappealing we left a third of the food on the platter. The scene on Mississippi was chill and busy. The people were friendly even though the weather was a little chilly. There were lines at several of the food trucks and parking out front was at a premium. We had ordered ahead from Matt's so we knew we would be alright. The only concern was the only side we could order ahead was the chipotle Mac and cheese to go along with the ribs and brisket. Many people had their pets and they were all friendly and polite. The staff at Matt's were nice and friendly and out our order on when we arrived (we were a few minutes early). The sides and links were available, but the online ordering wouldn't allow us to pick them. We decided against waiting in the long line to order some and wait for them to be ready since we were heading to Vancouver to meet up with a friend. The ribs were delicious and the brisket was done almost perfectly with a nice smoke ring and a delicious bark. The sauce they gave us was thin and not my favorite, but had very good flavor. I prefer my sauce to cling to the meat. This was closer to a marinade. Still good though. The thick sliced bread was great for sipping up the juices. The macaroni and cheese was a big hit. After seeing the episode of "Somebody Feed Phil" on Netflix, like many other people, we added Matt's BBQ as a "must visit" spot on our list to visit while in Portland. Unfortunately, when we first arrived at the food pod, their cart had technical difficulties and they had lost power. But lucky for us, we stuck around long enough that they eventually got the problem solved and the cart up and running. Well they got good meat. I got the Beef Brisket and Jalapeno Cheddar Sausage. I wanted the Pork Belly Burnt Ends too but I think they only do that on weekends. The brisket was amazing, both slices were nice and thick with a fat vein of buttery fatty meat nestled along the thicker meaty part that was still juicy. The sausage was a tad dry but fine still. I just got the pickled veggies and jalapeños as a side since the meat was plenty to fill me, it was nice to have some sour to balance the overwhelming meatiness. A little bummed they don't do combos or mix n matches so you can try a bit more meats in one entree but it's cool. Service is self ordering thru an iPad. Beware they're always the busiest cart in this pod, line can be long sometimes. I went to order and miraculously there was no line but then I went to double check something on their menu for legit like 15 seconds and when I turned around there were about 15 people in front of me, it was like that scene from the office where Dwight gets in line to ask a question at a seminar if anyone knows what I'm talking about. Very good quality of meats, perhaps higher than Bottos. Meaty and not too much excessive fats. Flavor is above average, perhaps a little over smoked, had a bit of bad residual taste. Very solid effort. read more
