Almost perfect! To start, I love that one of the partners, Ryan, was there and came by our table and talked to us. He told us all about the idea of Matu and how the restaurant came about. He was so friendly and down to earth. Our waitress, Ashley, was really great and helpful. Ordering is a bit confusing because they have a la carte options and their prefixed options (like sugar fish). So figuring out how much and how many of what to get took a bit to get right, but luckily Ashley helped us out with us. In the end, we ended up ordering way too much food because we kept adding on more of the appetizers before the actual courses came out. We were left with a lot of meat and veggies by the end of the meal. I thought everything was cooked to perfection because I like my meat more on the medium/medium rare side. Matu cooks everything more on the red side, which is great for me but not for half of the others I was at dinner with - one of the reasons I can't give them 5 stars. We asked for some of the meat to be cooked a bit more and they wouldn't do it. They did bring us a hot plate though, so that we could cook it a bit more. Unfortunately, that still wasn't enough for some so they didn't end up eating any of the meat. We were 8 people, 1 of which is a vegetarian so she got veggies, salad and the branzino. We ordered 3 matu dinners for 2 (which was way too much. We should have probably just gotten 1 or 2 matu dinners, especially given how rare the meats were cooked). Every single thing that came out, from the broth to the beef cheek and rib eye, I thought was HEAVEN. We were all a bit skeptical when we saw beef cheek on the menu, but it ended up being one of our favorites. I was also pleasantly surprised by the ribeye, as it wasn't too fatty. Some parts are pretty rare and others a bit more cooked. We ordered 2 Thai steak salads - PERFECT BITES! Wow! We originally ordered 2 Caesar salads and then ordered 2 more because it was so good. Same goes for the pasta - ordered 2, and ended up getting a total of like 5 or 6. The 47 gem salad that comes with the coursed dinner was one of the best tasting salads I've ever had. We had the broccolini with the rib eye course and ordered 2 mushrooms and 2 cauliflowers as well. The mushrooms were okay, as were the broccolini. The cauliflower was tastier but just really oily. THE FRIES!! THE FRIES!!!!! Started with 2 and can't tell you how many we ended up with because we just kept on ordering. I don't care much for fries, but WOW these fries were on another level. Dessert- we ordered all 3. I'd skip the cake next time and maybe even the strawberry panna cotta and just get cafe con leche panna cotta. Another negative- I asked for some hot water with lemon with my meal and for some reason they have no hot drinks? Not even hot water? All in all, I really enjoyed my meal. This review is by no means about the food but 100% about the customer service, management and all employees involved. We arrived to celebrate a very special day in my son's life. Although his girlfriend is vegetarian (yup, not the best choice of establishments for her) she was aware of the menu and would eat fish in a pinch, therefore was prepared to order the only one offered on the menu. She would not however, eat shellfish so that left only the Branzino. Oops, sold out! We should have known, considering we made a rather late reservation. Everyone from the host, to our server and then the manager could not have been more kind. Other establishments were recommended and although not available, we did find a "good" place to eat and a good story to tell in the future! My husband and I stopped at Matu for lunch and we are glad we did. The menu is pretty simple and maybe that's why it was so amazing. We had the salad (only one option for lunch) still very tasty, and had the Matu cheesesteak. I would say it was the best cheesesteak I've ever had. The only reason I am not giving this place a 5 star review is that the staff weren't as nice or approachable and that during lunch you can't order cocktails. As far as ambiance, I would say it looked nice, but may have to come back during night to give a fair review. read more

This is a very honest review. My fiancé and I ate here on 2/18 for our anniversary, and I would not recommend this place to anyone for an intimate night. The tables are very close together and it is loud inside, so it's difficult to have conversation. It may be better earlier in the evening or if its ever less crowded, but it gave more of a fast-paced steak restaurant than a dining experience. We also had a reservation for 7 p.m. that was made in January. We arrived at 6:54 and valeted our car, when we checked in with the host we were told that they were running just a bit behind and would be less than 10 minutes. Okay 10 minutes not a big deal, the place was busy so I understand if they were cleaning off a table or something. At 7:20 we still had not been seated; my fiancé asked the host about the delay and the host didn't even apologize or acknowledge the long wait, he simply said "yea the next table for 2 is for you". From one restaurant owner to another, I cannot stand places that accept reservations but do not honor them. Our reservation was made month in advance, it was noted that it was our anniversary, and we did not get seated until 7:28 p.m. If you are going to allow reservations, then you need to ensure you have a table reserved for those guests and make walk-in guests wait, or simply don't take reservations. I watched many other guests go up and complain about the wait as well so maybe this is something you should look into. It is absolutely ridiculous that we waited more than 30 minutes for a reservation. On top of that, they charge an 18% gratuity to ALL parties. I understand it is not the servers fault for the delay; however, if the restaurant management is bold enough to think that its service is worth 18% gratuity, then the service should reflect that and be amazing! The waitress was pleasant but she did not make it a memorable experience or provide some exceptional level of service. Now onto the food. This is the real reason that we stayed. We ordered the hand cut beef tallow fries, the creamed spinach, and the Matu dinner for 2 which comes with bone broth, steak tartar, 3oz center cut filet, braised beef cheek, and a 12oz ribeye and broccolini to share. It was amazing. The fries are some of the best I've had, only other ones that are this good are the duck fat fries from The Landsby in Solvang. The bone broth is so delicious I could have drank a whole bowl. All of the meat was melt in your mouth, and seasoned to perfection. Beef cheek is my new favorite! With all that said, amazing food does not excuse lacking service. I would love to dine here again or recommend it to others; however, until the service changes I think there are better dining experiences that respect your time and serve food equally as delectable. I can't say enough wonderful things about matu. I originally came here during a DineLA week and it quickly became one of my favorite neighborhood haunts. Look, it's not cheap by any stretch... but given the incredible quality of the ingredients and the absolute phenomenal service- AND that service is included (and tipping is not only discouraged but not accepted.. vehemently so).. it can't be a surprise that the prices are what they are. BUT- you ABSOLUTELY get what you pay for.. which is WHY this is one of my favorite haunts. Oftentimes I'll just sit at the bar and have an app or two (or three if I'm incredibly hungry) and hang out there. Here are my only caveats: 1. I really really wish that they had takeout. I can take home what I don't finish.. but it would be a great option to be able to take my food home or.. (crazy!) have it delivered. 2. The bone broth (which I generally turn my nose up at.. and honestly I'm even over the actual term) is bonkers delicious. I WISH so badly that it was possible to get it in a larger portion size - a tiny cup is lovely to delicately sip on.. but man oh man I have often craved it as a remedy for a chilly day. MY #1 TOP SENSATIONAL SANDWICH OF ALL TIME! This is the best Philly cheesesteak I have ever had. The sesame baguette is light and crisp, meat is piled up and juicy, the pepper is the perfect heat; there isn't really anything you could do to make this sandwich better. Most places use bell peppers but Matu uses roasted Long Hot peppers. They delivery heavy on the pepper flavor and a mild-medium on the heat. If you aren't a fan of spicy, I would order your sandwich without em. They Also use real cheese instead of cheese whiz. No its not traditional but then again, nothing about this sandwich is. They're redefining the Philly Cheesesteak sandwich. Matu uses First Light beef exclusively which means all their beef is HALAL!!! I ordered a side of potato chips. They're deep fried in wagyu beef tallow. Imagine Lay's potato chips but thicker, crispy, and flavorful. The only complaint I have is with the ordering system. It's only available to-go through Postmates. I forgot to ask but you may be able to place a phone order. For 3 sandwiches and 3 chips, I paid $15 in "fees". Also, 5 minutes after ordering, I got a notification the order was ready. Great! Except when I got there 10 minutes later, I still had to wait another 5 minutes for my order. Bizarre. I hope they're able to get something else worked out on the ordering process. But nonetheless, you NEED to add this place to your list of restaurants to visit. read more

The single worst restaurant in the city for the money. Everything is not only customer unfriendly but actively antagonistic. And you won't believe how much they charge here for nothing - for air. Of course they won't seat you until everyone is there, even though there's plenty - and I mean plenty - of empty seating available. The two salads are essentially identical and are just lettuce with a little Parmesan sprinkled on top. You don't need to leave home for that. Four little shrimp is not a $24 cocktail. Awful. The steaks - even when cooked "a little more" are vomit-inducingly raw. I would serve it to a dog but that's about it. The mushrooms are literally hard and chalky. You wouldn't think it possible. The mashed potatoes are doughy and globby. The service is awful and inattentive. Our waitress was super phony and reading from a script. Not trustworthy in the least. Management is even worse. Totally uncooperative. They won't box my friend's food (literally taking it for his dog) because "it's a health issue." Baloney. Every other restaurant in the city can do it, so can you. I asked for a wet towel to wipe my hands off. "We don't offer a wet towel service." I didn't ask for a service, just damp some piece of cloth for me. After ten minutes the idiot comes back with two literal paper napkins. "I tried to wet them." They were as dry as the Sahara. Stupid moron. Order: Wagyu dinner (x2) Pinot noir (Flowers) Food & Drink: Matū is everything you would expect it to be and more. Think Sugarfish meets 100% grass-fed Wagyu beef. Their "Wagyu Dinner" is the "Trust Me" equivalent-- a 5 course tasting menu that changes every night. Last night we got- Wagyu beef bone broth made from simmering Wagyu bones for 24 hours and is served in a saki glass. It was a perfect start, packed with so much flavor and definitely prepped our pallet for the dishes to come. Hand-cut tartare- My husband said, "move over tuna" and he's only ordering beef tartare from now on. Caesar salad with seared center cut steak which was insane. Made with a Japanese flare, you can taste the yuzu, which was an amazing compliment. The steak was also cooked to perfection. An 8-hour braised beef cheeks over a celeriac puree which was sent from heaven. They were perfectly braised and melted in your mouth. A rib eye served with baby cauliflower- came sliced and, again, cooked to perfection. Red with a warm center. They also do not ask you how you would like to have your meat cooked- they explain at the beginning that they have prepared the meat the way it tastes best and they aren't wrong. I also really enjoyed the baby cauliflower. At this point, we needed some veggies in our lives so the the timing was perfect. We also couldn't pass up a slice of that flourless chocolate cake which was worth every bite. We ordered a bottle of Pinot Noir which paired perfectly with every dish. Ambiance: So moody. This place was packed on a Tuesday at 7:30. It did get pretty loud. The place resembles a Sugarfish but the lights are dimmed and feels a bit more elevated. The service was 10/10. Overall: Definitely recommend for a date night. Also could be good for a group. The experience is unlike any other and really cannot be compared to a traditional steakhouse. Tried their "wagyu dinner" which was a bit different from what I had in mind. The bone broth was very savory and fully of flavor. It really warmed the body the cold day. The tartar was amazing as it had so a mixture of salty, sweet, and runny. The filet mignon paired with 32 salad was the best dish! It was tender and delicious. The salad had such a great dressing that washed away any residue from the previous bite, so the next piece of steak tasted just as great as the first time. The cheek was braised until it turned into cotton candy. Went here to take a group of 8 for a close friends birthday dinner. On large groups, and Sundays, there isnt much chose for reservations or menu...we all had the Wagyu tasting menu. We added lobstertails, broccolini, fries and maitako mushrooms to our meal. Wow, the meat quality and preparations were outstanding. Every plate of meat were cooked/grilled perfectly. Honestly we were all so stuffed that there was plenty of meat to take hone afterwards. Ambience, decor and service was all excellent. We even brought a birthday year wine...magnum, first growth, very old, and they were able to uncork it and served it properly. A non meat eater walks into a steakhouse... Lol Loved my experience at Matu! I'm a sucker for good drinks, good vibes and a great atmosphere. While I didn't try any of the steak dishes, my shrimp cocktail was perfection. Each of the little bugs were plump, sweet and juicy and tasted just as good as they looked. The cocktail sauce paired perfectly, adding a nice acidity with a spicy kick. My boyfriend had the steak croquettes with a celeriac purée and from his reaction, it's safe to say he enjoyed it.
