If you love great views and have some interest in Astronomy, this is a must! We headed to Haleakala before sunset and were able to take some breathtaking photos of the crater. The drive to Haleakala is also a sight to see! Once the sun sets that's when the tour really begins. Jan, our tour guide, is really friendly and passionate about astronomy. It gets REALLY cold once the sun goes down. Jan does provide clothing and hot chocolate but our group still was freezing. The lowest temp was 44 degrees Fahrenheit. Dress in layers. Loved the views we got of different objects through her telescope. Overall, it was an experience I won't forget. Highly recommend. read more

We went on a sort of rainy evening and were worried the skies would not cooperate. But we actually were above the rain. Saw Jupiter and its four moons, Venus, Mars, Saturn with the rings, 4 galaxies, and too many other things to list. We even saw three meteors and dozens of satellites visible to the naked eye. Jan was a wonderful host and teacher with great stories to share. It was our splurge on this trip and we loved it! read more

This was by far one of the most amazing experiences of my life - but I could be biased, I got engaged while looking at the beautiful sunset on this trip!!!! The experience is breathtaking and the stargazing is humbling, exciting, mind blowing, and mesmerizing. Jan is very knowledgeable and you can tell really she tries to pay attention to many small details to help make the experience a pleasant one. I saw half a dozen rainbows on my way up the mountain, and even saw some endangered 'Ua'u's (or Hawaiian Petrels) after dark! I learned a lot from her, and saw many constellations I had never seen before. Do not leave Maui until you do this! By far it is the most fun thing we've done the entire time we've been here!!! Jan makes the perfect tour guide!!! Not only does she provide all the warm clothes (which is absolutely fantabulous) but she also provides cookies, hot chocolate, water, coconut water, and the largest portable telescope on the island!!!! Truly overpriced and not well-guided. Jan takes you up Haleakala and stops at a few places to presumably look at the views, but she doesn't give you enough time (for instance, to take in the visitors' center) and if you've already been to the mountain all this driving around is redundant. She should meet you two hours later and just do the stargazing. When we finally made it up to the stargazing spot, we were able to view stars for about 20 mins and then the fog rolled in. Because Jan only has one telescope, unlike other stargazing outfits, it takes a long time for everyone to see a given star and Jan is kind of rushing people through. it's a bit chaotic. Also, Jan's delivery is incredibly dry, which she seems to take pride in. She doesn't realize that the best guides and educators are fun and interesting. My dad, who is a mathematician, made a joke, and Jan said she wasn't into humor because she's scientific, like the two are mutually exclusive. The minute the clouds came in, Jan threw in the towel--"That's it. Let's go." For $180 each--the most expensive activity we did on Maui, including whale watching and snorkeling--I felt it was a ripoff. Jan had said that if there was no visibility we'd get 25% back, but of course it should be at least 50%, and in our case because we saw a few stars she didn't return anything. She also told us that she would send an email to everyone in the group some information about the few stars we did see, but that didn't happen. After all that, it was also clear she was expecting tips at the end! Think about it this way: when you go whale watching, they give you lunch, drinks, and you can go for three hours for less than this trip. Jan has you bring your own food, you drive around a lot and you may or may not see stars...but it ain't a lot of fun. Disappointing. read more

Sadly, our experience echoed Christine J's: the guide Jan, who was generally unpleasant, seemed intent on getting the whole thing over with as quickly as possible. We were rushed along only to spend an hour waiting for sunset which was hard to view from the spot she picked. She complained about other tourists who had every right to be there, verbally attacked a woman in our group for her interest in astrology, rushed us through the telescope viewing, barked out the constellations, and was clearly "done." Her driving was also reckless: she had to slam on the brakes to avoid cutting another car off on the way up, and blew through stop signs while speeding along in the middle of the road on the way down. Had I known how easy the drive was, I would have skipped this pricey tour, as the stars are there for all to see. Yes, objects viewed through the telescope are fascinating, but with all the negatives, it was a struggle to enjoy ourselves. Given the many wonderful experiences available on Maui that are offered with lots of aloha, I recommend spending your vacation dollars elsewhere. read more

Wow, this was one of the absolute highlights of our vacation. We 100% recommend this tour -- vastly superior to what we observed others doing (mostly just sunset). Jan is deeply knowledgeable about the cosmos, and is eager to share that knowledge. We saw more objects than we had even hoped to see, including 4 planets (Saturn's rings! Jupiter's stripes AND 4 moons!) and beautiful nebulae. Our group was really enthusiastic about the stargazing portion, so much so that we didn't even get back to our cars until after 10. I cannot even express how great it was to be all bundled up in the provided snow suits. Without them, we would have all been freezing and unable to enjoy the cosmos. Excellent adventure - the chance to freeze while on Maui. Jan, the owner,knows her stars/galaxies/planets/nebula/etc. She provides a complete cold-weather outfit for each participant, from gloves to snowsuits to face masks. The best part of the excursion is standing on the mountain top in the darkness and admiring more stars than you thought could squeeze into one sky. There's only so much you can enjoy as a group looking at distant stars through a single telescope on a windy night. But just admiring the full sky is a lifetime memory. read more

This is an incredible experience! The owner, Jan, is incredibly knowledgeable, and she has everything to make for a perfect evening. Her directions are excellent, the extra clothes she provides for the summit are absolutely crucial, and she has neat little extras that make the evening wonderful. The location is great, as her stargazing spot is above most clouds, so you get an unobstructed view of more stars than I probably have ever seen at one time. She offers a partial refund if she can't show you more than 5 objects, but usually she can find at least 10, and sometimes as many as 15. These are all great points, and she will also show you the Milky Way, notable constellations and asterisms (parts of constellations) and explain many other features of the night sky. Finally, she will send you a follow-up email with all of the features you saw, as well as additional resources for continuing your astronomical pursuits. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience -- if you have any free evening in Maui, do yourself a favor and book this early. You will thank yourself later. read more

This is a small company run by an amazing lady named Jan. My wife and I were going to be in Maui for five days and really wanted to take advantage of the low light pollution and amazing views that can be seen from Maui. After doing a lot of research online we found Maui Stargazing, the only bad thing was I couldn't find a single thing about this company. Since we were going to a state/island that we had never been to before and could possibly meet-up privately with someone that could be taking advantage of tourists we were stand-offish about booking. After emailing Jan back and forth we decided to give this a shot. We are so happy that we did. Jan was very good at communicating through text/email about plans (where to meet, when to meet, etc...). We ended up meeting at a little restaurant at the base of Haleakala at around 5:45pm. We followed Jan to the observing sight on the slopes of Haleakala. After the sun set Jan spent around 15 minutes setting up her telescope and we waited for the bad weather to clear. After about an hour the fog/rain cleared and were presented with one of the most awe-inspiring skies I've ever seen - I will never forget what it looked like. I completely understand why Hawaii is home to some of the worlds biggest and most expensive observatories. Jan is extremely knowledgeable about the stars/planets/constellations/etc...she would find them first and then allow my wife and I to view them through the telescope. Jan even asked towards the end if there was anything we wanted to see specifically, she is almost like a personal tour guide, she will show you the cool stuff but if you have something specific you'd like to see Jan will help find it if possible. The price for a personal tour guide up the mountain and a personal tour guide of the stars came out to $150 for two people - Jan takes cash or Paypal after the conclusion of the astronomy tour. Jan, the organizer and leader of this tour, is extremely knowledgable about astronomy. She knew where to look, explained everything and was extremely kind. For example, I was hungry but couldn't make it in time to buy a sandwich at the store before it closed (it was Thanksgiving) so Jan bought me a sandwich out of pocket without my asking. She also kept me up to date on an almost hourly basis regarding whether the tour would be worth it prior to my booking the day of - it was the day after a full moon and cloudy. Jan is just fantastic. She is extremely knowledgeable on what she is talking about, and has an amazing passion for what she does. The prior reviews say most of what needs to be said, but I must add that she goes far above and beyond in customer service. Believe it or not, she brings super warm jackets, pants, and even boots (depending on size) for you to wear in case you forgot that Mt. Haleakala is cold (who remembers to bring a jacket to Maui). She does occasionally cancel tours if the weather is bad and the cloud conditions make it difficult to see anything, which I find incredible as I've never found another business so honest (even at the cost of their own bottom line). She could just take the money and do the tour rain or shine like other companies...but customer satisfaction is no.1 to her and her integrity is just unparalleled in any industry. Jan is an excellent guide when it comes to astronomy. The trip was perfect in so many ways. After meeting at Kula Lodge, she led the convoy of cars up to the Haleakala peak where we observed the sunset. Serene and spectacular. Then we drove down to her observation spot, off the road. She had hot chocolate and tea and camping chairs to sit on. Very thoughtful! My wife and I had a great time, as she was mindful of each person getting their turn and spending adequate time behind the lenses. She used laser to point out at objects. After it became pitch dark, the Milky Way looked amazing. She showed us Mars and Jupiter, 4 Galilean Moons, 7 Galaxies (M-81, 82, 104, 65, 66, 51 and Leo triplet), 1 binary star system (Alcor and Mizar), 1 Globular Start Gluster (Lepus), 2 nebulae (Crab and M 43), 8 Open Star Clusters, 12 Asterisms, 18 constellations (identified with laser) and 12 First Magnitude Stars. And many more. It gets cold, so proper attire is a must. She had jackets, gloves and hoodies for everyone. She catalogued our sizes beforehand so that she could carry the right sizes on the night. Very meticulous! We loved the experience, and will be back if we return to Maui! read more

Highlight of my time in Maui, and that's saying something. Jan was super accommodating as the wind and clouds were not cooperating the first two days we tried to star gaze. On the third night, Jan met us at 6500 feet up the volcano, which is still outside the National Park. It's well above the clouds and really a beautiful perch. Despite twenty MPH winds, Jan set up the telescope. It was an adventure. We saw the storm bands on Jupiter, spotted Mars creeping over the horizon and saw dimples on the moon as if it were mere feet away. There were constellations galore and seeing the Milky Way is an awe inspiring event. Jan was knowledgeable and entertaining as we made our way through the heavens. A couple of tips- the gazing is best when the moon is smallest. Take a look at the moon phases around the time of your trip and plan to meet Jan when the moon-light will be at a minimum. Bring warm clothing but don't worry too much as Jan has plenty of coats and gloves. Drive slowly on the roads up! My brothers and I came this close to hitting a cow. read more

Jan is a great chaperone to meeting the stars, constellations etc. jan has a very bubbly and out going personality that gives you an instantaneous feeling of a long-lived friendship. We had a little bit of uncertainty when confirming our tour due to the tropical storm Ana, but we decided to take a risk and lucky for us the risk paid off. We saw many constellations, the Milky Way, Mars and many other beautiful things. My boyfriend and I live on the island and were at awe when we saw the night sky view up Haleakala. This tour is AMAZING! My husband and I honeymooned in Maui, and we had been contemplating this tour for months. It surely didn't disappoint--the sunset was to die for. Jan was professional and witty, and she did a great job educating the group on the national park and the stars we saw. Throughout the stargazing portion of the tour, we saw 22 constellations, Jupiter's stripes and two of its moons, many galaxies and star clusters. My wife and I booked a tour with Jan on our Honeymoon in Maui. We love the outdoors and I thought this would be a fun and unique way to experience Haleakala and the gorgeous stargazing. Overall we were happy with our experience, but I think there were a few improvements that could have helped boost the overall experience. Admittedly, Jan has a tough job of trying to navigate the best places to gaze based on a lot of varying weather conditions that are out of her control -- clouds, rain, wind etc. I'm not basing my review on any of those factors, rather things I think that ARE within her control as our guide. Jan did a great job communicating to us via text the day of our tour and let us know it was a "go" night which I appreciated. Once she confirmed our tour the also texted great directions for the pickup point and she arrived on-time in her nice sprinter van. The weather for our night was spotty -- part of Jan's tour includes the possibility of seeing the sunset on the top of the mountain. Unfortunately, we were not able to see a proper sunset due to crazy wind and clouds at the peak of Haleakala. This was completely fine in my opinion (again, varying weather out of her control) but Jan spent a lot of time driving and chasing the sunset and the clear skies -- I wish we could have just accepted the poor weather for viewing and stayed put in one place i.e. the visitor's center for some hangout time after a winding bus ride. I'm glad I took my dremamine because we were start/stopping and moving around a LOT prior to sunset. *Editor's note: I NEVER get motion sickness, but that afternoon was a struggle. Once the sun went down the skies cleared and Jan had a great spot picked out for stargazing -- she knows the park and the mountain well. She has a very nice telescope and really knows her stuff -- we got to see some beautiful galaxies, star clusters, and a good view of the lunar surface. We only got to view and sit outside for about an hour -- it was admittedly very cold and windy but I would have liked some more time outside. Her warm weather gear really came in handy. I especially liked the fleece mittens and headwear she provided -- nice touch! I think the experience of looking at the stars could have been improved with some history of the islands and how the stars related to the first sailors and ancestors of Hawaii and their navigation, not just astronomy info. Maybe I could have asked more questions but I suppose I was expecting a bit of this based on other experiences we had on our trip. All-in-all it was informative but again, a bit short. Overall we are happy with our tour and was glad for the experience. But I think it's important to have realistic expectations prior to booking so you are not disappointed with the outcome based on potential weather and "clear sky chasing." For a 4-5 hour time window blocked out for the tour I think more time could have been spent either stargazing when the sun went down or at the Haleakala visitor center for some exploring prior to sunset. We spent a good 3 hours driving around in the van which was not what I expected. read more

Absolutely amazing! Jan knows all the best views atop the mountain, even before the sun begins to set. She found a great, uncrowded spot to watch the sunset and pull out the telescope. She even brought snacks and cocoa! Her expertise with finding TONS of different things to see with the telescope is truly amazing, and so, of course, were the things we saw. I'll never look at a sunset or the night sky the same way. Btw, I am prone to motion sickness, but with Dramamine and a spot in the van where I could see the road, I was completely fine - don't let your sensitive tummy stop you from doing this tour! This was a great adventure where Jan, our knowledgable tour operator, took care of everything: Stargazing equipment, chairs, warm clothing, hot drinks and snacks. Jan worked to learn everyone's name and introduce us to one another, which made the outing even more pleasant for me and my husband. Conditions the night we went were fabulous. I've never seen so many stars in the sky. The Milky Way was clearly visible and Jan set the telescope on and shared stories of the discoveries of several astronomical features in the spring night sky over Haleakala. She also recommended some astronomy websites so we could follow up to learn more. Do this when you travel to Maui! Jan was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. The weather was questionable at the start but she told us to hold out as it blew over. She was right and we wouldn't hold her accountable for weather anyway. She brought warm jackets and pants that were clean and in excellent condition. And you will need them! This was a last minute decision and one of the best things we did while in Maui! The views were incredible and Jan has thought of everything from the warm clothing, snacks, and where to sit on the mountain with the views and less traffic. We got to go up to the summit for 15 min and enjoy the views up there and then we drove to her "secret" spot to enjoy the sunset and then the night sky. It was really cool to sit above the clouds and see the stars just pop out the darker and darker it became. Jan showed us numerous objects in the night sky from galaxies, to star clusters, to constellations.This easily became our favorite thing of our trip to Maui! We did the sunset and stargazing tour on a cloudy, rainy day in Maui. Jan kept us posted throughout the day on weather conditions at the summit. Much to our surprise, we drove to the top and found ourselves above the clouds about to witness a breathtaking sunset and surrounded by the best stargazing ever. Jan's expertise was amazing. This was an amazing trip all around. Jan clearly knows what she's doing on every level and is a wonderful tour guide. The drive to the top isn't actually as long as it might seem, though it is curvy, the length of time is because Jan also brings you to many overlooks and views before sundown that just add so much to the trip. Getting to see the crater atop the mountain and a view from 10,000 feet that lets you see all the way to the Big Island's mountain tops is spectacular. And she perfectly timed everything and kept us in check in order to have us all seated to watch the most breathtaking sunset I've seen in recent memory, and she had some great hot coco to go with! Once the sun went down came the actual Stargazing. Jan is an incredibly knowledgeable astronomer and very very good at what she does. I couldn't believe the speed and accuracy with which she was able to locate and show us the celestial objects. And being able to see with your own eyes things you normally only see in text books was quite special. The globular clusters, nebulae, milky way, the rings of Saturn, Jupiter's bands, eye, and four of its moons, the orange/red glow of Mars, and even the detail of the craters and valleys on the moon were wondrous. I couldn't recommend this trip enough to anyone interested in astronomy or even simply interested in seeing a part of Maui that's different than what you'd expect and just as gorgeous as the rest of the island. read more

We had a great time with Jan. She is fun to be around extremely knowledgeable. I really appreciate that she tries to remember our names. That is a very nice and personal touch. We were very luck to have been able to book with Jan since we were leaving the next day. The stars were amazing and we got to look at so many (15+) objects with her gigantic telescope. (You know it's all good when they have to bring a foot stool for the kids and vertically challenged). The Milky Way, Nebulas, Saturn and Jan's Laser show. We had a blast. Hot Coco and Winter Jackets included! Given that Maui is one of the top 10 places on THE PLANET to stargaze and there is a research observatory there, this is a must do in Maui. Come for the sunset, stay for the stargazing and if you are brave or crazy enough, stay for the sunrise. You might want to rent get a car with a panoramic roof or convertible (bring winter gear) because that night sky is just simply amazing. read more

I almost feel like giving up my astronomy hobby after going on Jan's tour. For now on, what I can see and photograph through my 8" telescope will be a disappointment. Views through Jan's 12" telescope under the pristine Haleakala skies makes my attempts under home light-polluted skies seem pitiful. I had viewed (or photographed) all but one of the objects Jan showed, and I literally gasped each time I looked through the eyepiece. For example, from home the M13 Hercules Globular Cluster is a fuzz ball with a few dozen distinct stars. From Haleakala, the fuzz resolves into hundreds of pinpoint sharp stars against an ink black background. Then Jan showed us Omega Centauri, a globular cluster not visible from northern latitudes. This was even better than M13 and indescribably beautiful. After six years with my telescope, Jan's tour was by far my best night of observing ever. read more

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS TOUR!! UNSAFE DRIVER!! Drive here yourself! We went on the stargazing tour with Jan today and at first everything was going fine, but then when we arrived to the top of the mountain, Jan pulled in to a parking lot and almost hit a couple in their car enjoying the sunset. The woman driving the car asked why she pulled in so close when there were no other cars in the parking lot. Jan then proceeded to go around to the other side of their car and almost hit the open passenger door while the passengers legs were on the ground. I thought for a moment he was going to be seriously injured. The driver of the car came to our window, upset (for good reason) to ask why she was doing this when there were many other places to park and Jan proceeded to antagonize the poor woman, laugh at her and said "Aloha" clearly making things worse. My children were scared and Jan was causing undue issues for everyone when she could have simply parked in another space. I felt sorry for the couple in the car. They were obviously just trying to enjoy this incredible place and Jan ruined it for us and for them. Then Jan took it a step further and called the ranger saying there was a couple causing problems. I heard her lie through her teeth about the entire predicament. The ranger approached this couple and found Jan to be in the wrong after he heard their side of the story. Truly no Aloha spirit on behalf of this driver Jan. We felt nervous and uncomfortable for the rest of the trip and will never use her services again. We strongly advise you to do the same. As far as the food and telescope... horrible and not worth the money. STAY AWAY! read more

True to most reviews on here, Maui Stargazing was a strong highlight on our trip to beautiful Maui. I recommend all going to book! Having seen sunrise on the volcano during another trip, I could make the comparison and say sunset and stars is the way to go. Before our trip we were communicated with every detail needed so no confusion was to be had with any part of the trip. The van ride up the mountain was relaxing, beautiful and educational. It was so wonderful to not have to stress about battling the drive or the other cars. Jan knows the mountain so well, she knew exactly the perfect stops to take us to right at the perfect time. We got to watch the most stunning sunset at the most beautiful point, each party eating a self packed picnic lunch along with additional provided snack and drinks (coffee!!!) provided by the wonderful Jan. Jan also provided us with most comfortable cold weather gear so we could stay toasty while observing the beauty and while also not having to worry about the extra bulk in our suitcases. Once the sun was down Jan showed us the coolest stars and planets above, pointing out the things for us to see in the summer night sky. Seeing the moon and Jupiter details so clearly was certainly a highlight. Jan's humor was pretty on point too and you just have to love someone who has StarWars music as their van horn :) Book this trip! read more

This was THE best thing we did while on Maui. I may be biased, as my fiancé proposed to me on this adventure, but I said it half a dozen times before that event occurred that this was the best thing we did! I've recommended it to several people that are planning trips to Maui. Jan is super knowledgable. She gets to know each person that she is sharing the evening with - by name - and tries to spend time with each of you. All dozen or so. This super exclusive adventure on the famous volcano gives you a view you won't forget - and you don't have to get up and be driving up a dark mountain at 3am. The warm clothes and snack are a bonus, and definitely a perk, as who wants to use valuable space in their suitcase for a large jacket or snow pants! I wish I could give her as many stars as there are in the sky, but Yelp limits me to 5. If you think it's spendy - just don't. It's worth far more than the tour you went on that morning. We were able to book a last minute trip to go up the mountain, see the sunset, view the caldera, and then look through a big telescope to see Messier objects, globular clusters, asterism, and finally the moon. Hawaii has excellent stargazing with it's low light pollution and high mountains, although no one thinks about that. If you want to come, either dress warm or use the warm jackets and pants that Jan provides. read more

Jan did an amazing job. She communicated well prior to our scheduled night by sending an email with specifics on what to bring, what to expect, what to wear, etc. The drive up the mountain was comfortable and informative. I can not imagine driving that mountain by myself. Jan was a safe driver and navigated the roads without any effort. We saw the summit and were in awe of the beauty. She then took us to a smaller area for the sunset and stargazing. The views were absolutely stunning. What we saw through her telescope were stars and planets in a way that you just can't see with the naked eye. We actually saw the rings on Saturn. Very cool. My kids (who thought stargazing would be "lame" ) both said it was their favorite thing we did in Maui. read more

Unprofessional owner-- avoid! While we are obsessed with the cosmos and were really looking forward to this part of our trip to Maui, we sadly cannot support this business. Jan, the owner / guide, is extremely unprofessional and rude. After booking our tour with her on the phone, she texted to tell us that we needed to pay an extra up-charge per person in order to keep our reservation (with confusing commentary on changes to the scheduled tour). We called her to clarify what she meant, and she agreed to update us once she heard back from another family booked for the same night. Soon after, we received a cancelation email from her-- strangely they require 72 hours notice if you want to cancel, but she can cancel within 48 hours... We called back to figure out what was happening, and she rudely told us we needed to pay the new up-charge to keep our reservation and go on the tour (the other family had canceled-- probably because of the up-charge). Strange! After this, we decided not to go on the tour, but she continued to send us unprofessional text messages. We are strong believers in tourism and local businesses, but customer service and ethics are paramount-- not deceptive pricing gimmicks. This company is not contracted by the Four Seasons concierge, so we booked on our own. Now we know why! read more
