Love the dog friendly patio and green space in the back of this discreet neighborhood gem. Nice expansive drink menu, the Mav's old fashioned was quite good! Tried the "burger of the moment" called Royale - enjoyed it thoroughly, but the real stand out was the cluck me up fries. Just enough spice with multiple layers of flavor. Is there a 10 star option? I LOVE Mavericks. Located on West River Road smack dab in the middle of a residential area, you need to keep an eye out for this local favorite! The restaurant itself would not lead you to expect what is coming from the kitchen. The space is small but cozy and the staff is top notch. If sitting outside is your thing I do recommend the patio around back. Before I get to the food I will mention the beer selection. Offering 13 taps, the selection ranges from domestics to local craft favorites as well as national craft beers. There is always something on sure to appease and it's constantly rotating. At any given time you can expect a sour, stout, IPA, cider and lager to all be on at the same time! It's almost impossible to not recommend everything as I've never had a bad meal. The Jalapeño-Cream Wantons are an absolute must every time I go. I also love the wings and the fried cauliflower. I suggest garlic habanero sauce but they offer some other great sauces if spicy isn't for you. I recently had the "That's So Tammy" and had a spiritual moment. This sandwich was amazing. Pastrami, caramelized onions, horseradish-peppercorn aioli and swiss cheese on griddled white bread. I also recommend a burger or chicken sandwich. Visiting my mom from California and as we were driving I saw this restaurant, so we stopped in for a bite. The people there were real friendly, which is a plus! I tried an Old Fashioned which was delicious and smooth. My son and I got some burgers which were delicious I ordered medium well because I like my hamburger cooked with no pink it was cooked just right but I should have got medium I think because it was wood grilled but it still had a great flavor! My mom got the beef philly she was not as pleased but that is because she didn't read where it said house made cheese sauce, and she is not a cheese fan! Otherwise she would have liked it without the cheese! I definitely recommend if your driving around looking at the Mississippi River you pop in and give this cute quaint place a try. We will never step foot in Maverick's Wood Grill in Champlin again! The manager working behind the bar was very rude and the waiter was even ruder. We waited 15 minutes for someone to even acknowledge us, then the food runner finally took our drink order. Another 10 minutes later, the waiter flew by and dropped our drinks on the table without saying anything or asking if we wanted anything else. When I flagged him down to politely say that we would like to order food please - he yelled and went off on me. We left our drinks on the table and walked out. I saw the waitstaff get completely abused today for being slow or conversing with their tables (which is their job and they were also suoer busy. The talk of one holiday gathering this year was of Mavericks, so we decided to check it out. We arrived at Mavericks and the parking lot was packed and folks were quite creative with different parking options, so following suit we parked and went in. It was a Friday night just before 6pm and there was roughly a 20 minute wait. Mavericks takes reservations so try calling beforehand or making a reservation to save the wait time, they say they'll only seat once the full party has arrived though. We were seated in time to sneak in a happy hour order before the 6pm bells tolled. We ordered the Cheese Curds and Jalapeño Cream Cheese Wontons with Thai-Chili sauce. They were a $1 or $2 off the regular menu price. The Cheese Curds were typical curds. They had a nice squeak so fit the bill. One note is that the Curds were served with ketchup and yellow mustard. Mavericks could easily elevate the Curds by serving a more creative sauce. The Jalapeño Cream Cheese Wontons with Thai-Chili sauce were tasty. The Wontons were great, cooked well with the right amount of filling. And while the Jalapeño was noticeable, it did not overwhelm the other flavors. The Thai-Chili sauce however, seemed to be a semi seasoned soy sauce. The Thai-Chili connection to the sauce was not discernible. As with the Curds, the accompanying sauce is where Mavericks could take it to the next level. My DH ordered the Smokin' Gouda Burger topped with sweet & spicy whiskey sauce, bacon, smoked gouda and french fried onions and served with fries, $11.99. The char on the burger was excellent and the burger was cooked to a nice medium. The sauce and Gouda did not pop in the flavor profile as expected, everything had very subtle flavorings. I like to be surprised and prefer to not have to make a decision, so I went with the Chef's Revenge. The Chef's Revenge was billed as "ever wonder what the chef eats? now you can find out. two rules - no requests and no complaining 16.99 due to the unplanned nature of this item, please allow extra time for preparation" The Chef's Revenge this night was shrimp Alfredo. The shrimp was six regular sized grilled shrimp placed on top of cavatappi noodles in an Alfredo sauce. Once again the flavors were very subtle and kind of bland. I was quite underwhelmed by this entree, especially considering the price. The atmosphere of the dining room was intimate. With an up north feel from the wood slice decorated wall, and soft lighting from the hanging candle fixtures. The service was also a plus with every staff member being friendly. read more

My friends have been here before so we went for Thursday night dinner. First of all, I love the decor. It's very retro but seemed very clean. Onto the food: The wings were the star of the show! They were cooked perfectly and the garlic habanero sauce is the perfect mixture of spice and flavor. I got the bahn mi and it was pretty good. I had a bite of the burger and that was also very tasty! This is hands down my all time favorite restaurant. If you ever have a chance to do Mother's Day or Easter brunch it will not disappoint. No matter what else you order you MUST order the house salad. Usually get the Chef's Revenge (eat what the chef is eating) but this has been replaced with something similar that is a varying permutation of a hanger steak. Have never been disappointed. Had chicken breasts, they were so dry and over breaded it was like sandpaper covered jerky. The mashed potatoes were awful. Looked like they tried to mash a waxy potato like a Yukon gold, and they were crumbly and way over spiced. And the wood-fired vegetables that came with it were so "fired" they were completely charred and black on one side all you could taste was coal. Went with a group and they said their food was good, so maybe it was just my menu choice since I don't do beef, but I won't be back on my own for food. Wow! This was a terrible first impression! The prime rib french dip was pretty much like eating shoe leather plus there seemed to be some great potato shortage. Barely a handful of fries but ketchup hilariously filled to the top of the container, talk about rubbing it in! The kids chicken tenders should be renamed kids chicken hockey pucks. My 7 year old nephew could barely bite through them. We actually wound up making boxed mac n cheese for dinner and that was amazing. It's pretty pathetic if a box of mac n cheese satisfies the family more than "a quality meal out". I have no need or desire to go back and throw away any more money. read more

We were told that there would be a$1.50 cake cutting fee charge per cupcake, and all restaurants do that. I've never heard of this(maybe if I brought in a cake and asked you to slice and serve) but for sure not one bite mini cupcakes. We didn't ask for forks or plates or anything. What a huge menu! I tried one of their chicken sandwiches where you have the choice of add your own toppings. You can also do this with a burger. I choose the Sweet & Spicy Whiskey which is sweet & spicy whiskey sauce, aged white cheddar cheese, and caramelized onions. The chicken was tender and juicy, the sauce was a little sweet with a little kick. It was great! We are planning to return to make sure we experience more on this menu! read more

But after my last experience and review which was not great (my experience, hopefully my review was rock solid) I received an email from the owner with questions and concerns about my experience. He said nothing of my review and didn't fault me at all for writing something pleasurable but more asked for feed back and was willing to talk about what I thought was wrong with the food I had. Overall, a good first time visit for dinner. I stopped in for the first time with my wife and my daughter for dinner. We tried several dinner categories...2 mixed drinks, 3 appetizers, 3 sandwiches, 3 desserts. GOOD: Overall, the food was good. I like the wood fire, smoke flavor concept. They seem to specialize in chicken sandwiches. They offer 15 of them. But you can also order burgers with the exact same 15 flavor varieties. This is pretty neat and they should advertise this option more and make it more obvious. Frankly, I thought the burgers were better than the chicken. The chicken was dry. But the burgers were great - big, fat, and juicy! The service was excellent, I couldn't have asked for anything better. The restaurant itself is very beautiful. I particularly like the wood log wall. BAD: The mixed drinks were really botched. In hind sight, we probably should have just ordered beer so they couldn't get screwed up. Both of the cakes were weird...very dense, dry, not very sweet. And the frosting was also strange...dense, like plaster. This is a sign of too much time in a refrigerator OR a bad baker. The cooks should either bone up on their baking skills or just buy cakes from an outside source. (FYI, the key lime pie was awesome!) Mavericks is a little off the beaten path, but that shouldn't matter in this day of smartphone navigation. Apparently it is plenty easy to find because it is always packed, which is partly due to popularity and largely attributable to limited available space. The bar, lounge, and dining room areas all more or less blend into one. The vibe and decor is neighborhood dive meets country cafe; less Hennepin County, more Stearns County. This is an aesthetic that appeals to me as I grew up in rural Central MN. Not to mention it is a locally-owned scratch kitchen using high quality MN suppliers which can give one the warm fuzzies of keeping it local. The enticing wood fire grill catches the olfactory from the get go and really amps up already simmering hunger. I recommend not overlooking the apps. The Prime Rib Crostini, chicken satay, and cheese curds are a few favorites, with more trips needed to sample other offerings. The Crostini is sliced and lightly toasted baguette, spread with a horseradish aoli, and topped with thin sliced rare prime rib and swiss--so good that you'll wish you had ordered at least double. The entrees have all been hits so far. I've stuck to the steak in all my visits; steak sandwich, prime rib French dip, and Ribeye steak. All fantastic, delicious, and well prepared. The wood grill adds such a rich layer of smokey flavor. I can't say enough good about the food. I most recently had the Ribeye, medium rare and topped with melted bleu cheese, served with horseradish mashed potatoes and broccoli. That's flavor country, Marlboro Man! My wife and friends have had the fish tacos, as well as many varieties of chicken sandwiches and burgers, and all have equally raved about the quality and flavor. My primary reason for not awarding 5 stars is due to the inconsistency of the service. Too often our waitresses have disappeared for atypically long stretches of time when they were needed to refresh drinks, remove dirty plates, and other basic services that require a relatively minimal level of attention. I am by no means a needy patron or squeaky wheel. At all establishments, I start with a minimum expectation of service and award "bonus points" for going above that level, which I feel is more fair to the staff than expecting the world and then getting overly sensitive when any little thing slightly deviates from a skewed presumption. For what it's worth. Overall, I am a fan of Maverick's and certainly recommend it to anyone willing to listen. Food of this quality and flavor is relatively hard to find in this part of the 'burbs, so make tracks to Champlin and give them a shot. You won't regret it. read more

​It was good while it lasted. I used to live in the area and enjoyed the eclectic menu once offered. I had heard that they had changed things up a bit, but was unaware it wasn't for the better. All the tables in the bar are were marked reserved, and we were seating in the dining room. There were two other tables occupied there. Food arrived cold and when sent back was not remade but stuck under the salamander. Not good when it has shrimp in it making them tough and rubbery. I won't even get started on the quality and presentation. After paying the check as we were finishing our drinks the manager informs us that he needs our booth for a reservation. Thought it odd since there was a row of 5 tables all directly across from us. Bottom line is Mavericks is a good bar. The food is a little above typical bar fare. So if you cant sit in the bar, don't bother. read more

OMG! The food was phenomenal!!! I'm a gourmet foodie kind of gal and was BLOWN away with the flavor of our dishes! My beau had the Chefs Revenge which was the most tender piece of cod with a delish risotto in a creams sauce with rosemary & red peppers. I had a steak with grilled asparagus and horseradish mashed potatoes. It was by far the best asparagus I've ever had. The atmosphere was a bar lounge. A local place that we truly enjoy, they have consistently good food and the evening specials are always creative and good. They have a bar area and a back room which is more quite. We prefer the bar area as its more lively they have TVs if you want to stay up-to-date on sports. Happy Hour is a good deal on appetizers and beer. I have tried to give this place so many chances. I love the location of this quaint place and the fact that it's in the middle of a neighborhood. My last experience was the one that made me decide to not return. The bartender, Zach, is not a friendly staff member. We had another person join us at the bar so we went in the little nook of a room (which had nobody in it) and took a high back stool and brought it to the bar. He informed us we couldn't take chairs from those tables so people can sit at the tables. The whole time we were there nobody sat in that area. A manager recommended we take a stool from that same area. Also.. one of the tables in that area was occupied with someone's fast food but we couldn't take one chair from there. And if that was the case then say it nicer. The drinks are not very strong. The bartender was texting at the bar while working, which I find very unprofessional. The food isn't half bad, which is the reason for the two stars. I got the mini Mac sliders and my bf got the pulled pork sliders. Lots of nice locals that occupy the bar but the bartender as a chip on his shoulder. I'm done giving Mavericks anymore chances. read more

Not a very spacious restaurant but it gives you that intimate feel. Staff was super busy. (On a Friday it's expected) Our waitress had all the tables by the bar which was kind of frustrating. Food came out very quickly. Meatloaf was pretty good. It has blue cheese in it. If you're not a fan of blue cheese don't get it. Sirloin steak with mash potatoes was interesting. The mash potatoes had horse radish in them which was very powerful! Did not mix well with the not so seasoned steak. Margarita chicken was very good! I wouldn't recommend this restaurant for toddlers or babies. The atmosphere and the space isn't ideal for a child. The bathroom does have a great, clean changing table. Went to Mavericks for the first time in a long time as I had moved away for several years. Met some girlfriends there for Happy Hour on a Thursday. We sat on the patio and fad a lively couple of hours. Service was great. Never wanted for anything. Refills on drinks, food cans very quickly, plates taken away promptly. Happy Hour 2 for 1 drinks and it was greatly needed on a warm day! Everyone seemed to really like their food, we all cleaned our plates! I personally had the chicken lettuce wraps from the Appetizer menu and it was awesome. The chicken itself was fantastic, as was the peanut dipping sauce. Only wish the patio umbrella could have shielded us better from the western sun. It was beating on us and the umbrella couldn't be tilted. It was a beautiful night, but it would have been perfect if we could have just had a little relief from the sun. It was fabulous seeing a dog-friendly patio too!! My parents love and swear by Maverick's, which means every time I visit them in Brooklyn Park, they recommend we eat here. Honestly? I should listen more! On my most recent visit with the family, they talked me into lunch at Maverick's and it was delicious. I ordered the Tuscan burger at the recommendation of my brother and it was amazing: tomatoes, onion rings, aioli. I love big messy burgers and this was big, messy, and perfectly cooked. My partner got the grown-up grilled cheese and Russian cabbage soup (I believe that was the name). He was stoked because being from California, he'd never heard of that soup before. And it was super tasty! The beer, wine and cocktail menu is also really long, with plenty of options for everyone (over 21). I enjoyed a good strong old-fashioned.
