I don't offer this rating lightly. A place has to make me happy at least a few times before it gets a good rating outta me. I know how to cook, I know what doesn't work, I get annoyed when something is sloppy and I can tell when management is lazy. I'm a tough crowd. I have been to Mavericks several times over the past few years. They've made me happy. The least I can do is gush in this review and offer insight into said gushing. Mavericks has two parts - the bigger dining room and the bar. I've been in both. The dining room is nice - I'd go there with my husband and/or kids. The bar is where it's at. There are booths and tables. My husband and I like to sit at the actual bar and order dinner. We have done this a few times. As far the food goes - it's great . The burgers are awesome. The Smokin' Gouda burger is one of the better burgers I've ever had. I order mine medium and it has not been over or under-cooked once. It has always been perfect. I've had a few of their burgers - all great. Good flavor fusions on all of them. I've had other items from the menu as well - sandwiches, entrees, etc. The food is consistently good. I am consistently pleased. Atmosphere - it's awesome. We went for the 6th Anniversary party last month and had a wonderful time. It was packed and there wasn't anywhere to sit. Quite frankly, I didn't care. They had SURLY DARKNESS on tap so I would have stood outside on a brick to guzzle that if I had to. They always have Surly Furious on tap, which mama likes. Great beer selection, which I appreciate. Good drinks. Really good martinis. The bartender is fantastic. He's personable, entertaining and attentive. The ambiance works well for the area. It's casual and laid back, yet it teeters on hip a little bit. Just enough. Not so much that it's pretentious, but enough to make it, well - a little hip. I know if I wear heels with skinny jeans I won't feel out of place, and I know if I wear a sweatshirt I won't feel out of place either. The thing I like most about this place is that every time we're there we meet some new person or couple who also frequents the bar area. We always end up chatting and exchanging recommendations about the menu. Looking around the bar - you will see a total motley crew of patrons. You'll have the middle-aged trucker who sounds like Norm from Cheers and has 1,937 awesome stories about the calamities of trucking, you'll have the hipsters with well done (usually) tattoos and eyebrow-raising piercings, you'll have the husband and wife who are shoving burgers and beers down their throats (us), you'll have the singles, you'll have the people who have been coming there for years and years who you'll later learn actually perform live music there once and a while. The crowd is diverse and I love that. In reading through the other reviews, I have to admit I'm pretty surprised. Someone said something about the staff being more concerned with their plans or something. Hey, whatever. I've never had any bad experience with any of the staff. They have all been customer-oriented and professional and attentive to us every single time we have been in there. So I feel like if someone had a bad experience with one of them, maybe it was just a misunderstanding or a fluke. Or maybe someone is just a butthead. Customers can be buttheads. Regardless, my feeling is that it isn't a good representation of the staff overall. We have had nothing but good experiences with the staff - consistently. Be advised, this 5 star rating is not trying to say 'this is a fine dining establishment that is fancy and you'll be wowed with filet.' No. This is a local place that has a lot to offer and they do a great job. I could not be happier with what they offer - they do it well every time. I leave really happy every time. So, they get a 5 for sure. This is a fun place with really good food and a great vibe. We are thrilled that we're only a few miles away because this has definitely become our favorite place to go on our date nights. Give it a try! read more

Northern metro biker bar meets casual residential restaurant. This place has two different atmospheres that mesh well together - bar side and dining room side. On the dining room side, first off, I'm in love with the walls that's been covered with slices of wood. It's a quiet space with a quaint patio filled with outdoor seating and has some nice game space for bean bags too. It's a good space for family time. As for the bar space, it's welcoming and upbeat. Sometimes I have to laugh at the bar atmosphere that is made up by its patrons. I feel like singing the Cheers song when I walk in as there are the locals who sit in their usual spots at the bar. Both spaces have a modern cabinesque feel to them without being kitschy. Even before my husband owned a motorcycle, we enjoyed frequenting this bar. The young owners are usually on-site and you can tell they put everything they have into this place and they really take care of it. The food is better than good (great burgers!!!), the service is friendly, and I always look forward to going back ... just as long as I don't become one of those local patrons who have to sit in the same bar stool every time. I give Maverick's a two out of 5 for the following reasons: On the multiple occasions we tried it out the dining room seemed neglected in comparison to the bar side of the business. One of the times we visited my husband ordered a dessert shooter, only to find out after 20 minutes that it wasn't available. Unacceptable. None of our dining visits involved taking less than an hour and a half to have full dinner service and this was for a table of four each time. Extensive menu that should be cut down, simplify it and focus on the bar food. Diner beware, drinkers rejoice. read more

I went here because I've read some great reviews about the wings. So we drove up from Lakeville so it wasn't a short drive. Staff was very friendly on a Sat nite. I ordered the wings. My wife and toddler shared the TT hotdish. First the wings. The presentation was pretty spectacular. The wings were not small like bw3 or other sports bar wings. They were decent size. They were tender and not dried. OK. That's the good. The wings I ordered, called the King of Black Throne, was just too spicy for me. It was flaming hot. I was sweating while eating it. My wife even laughed. That's just too much. I know my server said it was hot, but I didn't think it was that hot. They should have given you a number on a scale so you have some reference. As for my wife, she raved about her TT. That's unusual. She makes TT a lot at home and likes to order when we go out just to compare. None of them were any good, until tonight. She even told the server. Overall, the service staff was excellent. I will be back. I will try the meatloaf next time and skip the flamethrower wings. read more

We went there because the wife bought a Living Social discount. I am always willing to eat foods that have been cooked with wood or charcoal. Heck, I have 2 grills and a smoker, bring on the flavors. We were seated in the dining room and as we looked over the menu we were already anticipating a good meal. The waiter took our drink orders and went off. It took a lot longer than I expected to get a beer and long island tea, but they were welcomed when they arrived. Our order was taken and went on his way. The hamburger and chicken sandwich should have been to us in 5-10 minutes, but still no food in a half hour. When the waiter came by to ask if we wanted more drinks, I told the waiter we didn't need drinks but sure could use our food. I have never nursed a beer so long. We finally got our food and although it was good, the chicken sandwich was slightly over cooked making it dry. The owner came out and apologized for the delay. I could not get a reason from him for the delay, but with other reviews I have read about that restaurant, the delays happen often so I have to believe it is poor management of the kitchen. They don't know how to schedule their orders. The waiter apologized over and over, and I don't believe it was his fault and he should not need to apologized for the management. From 'sit down to get out' it was 1-1/2 hours to get a sandwich and beer. Some people came, ate and left while we waited and others were still waiting for their food. The owner comped the meal and told us to come back and use the Living Social discount for another meal. I won't go back, but my wife and one of her friends will use it. read more

The only reason this place gets 3 stars is because the food is great. Now the problems: Although it was lunchtime and only two other tables in the entire place were filled, the service was terrible. Once we got seated, it was almost 10 minutes until a server came to the table, although he did bring water. When I attempted to order the brats, he informed me they were out of them. Ok, the fallback was the grilled cheese and tomato soup. When I attempted to upgrade from chips to french fries, I was told that I could not upgrade that sandwich, although the menu stated that any sandwich could be upgraded. I guess a grilled cheese is some un-upgradable special sandwich. He indicated that he could get the manager but I declined. Who wants to fight with a manager over upgrading a sandwich? Now, the server disappeared for long timeframes. We finally had to get up and hunt him down to ask for the check. All in all, a nice outside patio and great food. All of us were very happy with the quality and taste. Now, if they could get their menu to state things correctly, not run out of food, and get their service together, it could become a great place!! read more

Dans response "I don't know what to tell you it's 6:30 on a Friday night. Now I understand it's hard to find help and all that, but I believe this man is the owner or manager. Servers are too busy schmoozing with regulars at the bar instead of waiting on tables...leaving us with no drinks or orders taken. Throughout the evening this continually happened with zero apologies. Empty drinks during our meal is not the way to go. Then it took FOREVER to get the server to bring our check. Admittedly, I did not have high expectations as I walked into the place. Not that there's anything wrong with the inside, it just had a quite rustic "Cheers" feel to it and I was thinking the beers were likely better than the food. But, I was very pleasantly surprised. Certainly the beer selection was quite good, but the food as well did not disappoint. We had a large selection of items, and were able to find food for two pretty finicky youngsters to boot. Folks at the bar were playing cards with TVs broadcasting a football game. The TVs weren't overwhelming, though, and if you wanted to watch you could. We didn't watch and did not find them at all distracting. Very nice place. read more

First impression...the blonde hostess was horrible. How do you take a call in mid sentence and ignore us? Had horrible customer service at Mavericks recently. There was no one at the hostess desk to seat us so we thought since it wasn't busy at all that we were just suppose to sit down at an outside table. Well, after waiting 10 minutes to be waited on our "waitress" runs by our table and throws out the snide remark of "You're suppose to wait to be seated, FYI." Completely rude and uncalled for since there was no one else waiting for a table. Apparently there was a very hard-to-see TV screen that blended into the wall that we missed that said "wait to be seated." But nonetheless, she didn't have to be so rude. Mavericks will never get our money in the future and I will never recommend such a place that treats customers this way. read more

Drinks were good, great happy hour prices and good service but go somewhere else to eat. The Thai chili wings were cooked perfectly with crispy skin but the sauce was way too salty. You could hardly taste anything else. You can sub grilled chicken breast for any of the burgers which I love, but my chicken breast was smaller then the bun (wish I would've taken a picture) and very dry. Even the side of balsamic I asked for couldn't help it. My boyfriend had the burger which was ok, he asked for Medium Rare and got Rare. Both of our fries were salted and then re-salted with so much sea salt you couldn't even eat some of them. I love salty food but this was way too much. I've been up here a lot this summer with friends and family and I have to say, the food has been excellent every time. Fantastic summer salad with fresh strawberries on top and really good dressing. LOVE the roasted tomato/goat cheese chicken burger and their new turker burger. My best friend had the firetruck burger (I think--it was a spicy one) and he said it was messy but good. Sweet potato jojos are delicious, even my father liked them and he normally despises sweet potato. I had one of the sandwiches once-I think with turkey and artichoke dip and that was really good too. I don't drink beer, but the wine I had was really good too. My parents and I were just up here last Saturday for Sing Along with Michael which was a great time. Live music on Saturdays definitely makes for a good atmosphere. People have talked about parking being an issue, but I'm there on Friday/Saturday nights a lot of the time and haven't had to look for a space. And there's motorcycle parking, which eats up less of the lot. I've gotten to know some of the regulars, as I suppose I'm becoming one, and there's a reason they come here: food, service and atmosphere. You can't beat it and I'm definitely going to continue eating here and bringing friends and family to Maverick's. read more

I'd love to go back because they have such a big menu. And many of the items sounded so good. I kind of got myself stuck and had to order a burger. I saw the Thursday night special of a burger and beer for $10. The burger I had was good but some of the other options looked better. I had a bite of my friends 'house salad' and it was delicious. For a 'house salad', it has to rank pretty high up there in comparison to other house salads. Thursday night also has half price bottles of wine. I wish I had taken advantage of that deal then I wouldn't have been so committed to the burger. I had been there a few weeks before on a Saturday night. There was a girl playing live music that was really good (I wish I remember her name). If you're looking for very low key and some drinks, it would be a good option. read more

I live in St. Paul. Mavericks is in Champlain. For all that know the area, these two cities are not close to each other. I will drive across the city to get these burgers and drag anyone that is with me along the way to get them. So damn good. I have lived in Champlin for almost two years and I drive by Mavericks every day, but I kept putting this place off. There are already so many "just ok" American restaurants in Champlin that I assumed that this one wouldn't be any different. I was looking at reviews of all the area restaurants yesterday and finally clicked over to Maverick's website. Thursday nights are $10 burger and tap beer. Burgers are normally $10 anyway, so why not go and get a free beer out of the deal? So I finally packed up my husband in the car last night and off we went. The dining room had a small wait time so we opted to sit in the lounge. It was very comfortable with a slight funky edge to it. Nothing over done, I was mostly relieved that there weren't Americana signs that you can purchase in bulk plastered over the walls. This is the kind of place that you can bring your in-laws to, or go to for a cozy date. Every single staff member was genuinely sweet. The waitress even invited us to stay and watch the band that was just setting up even though we had already paid the bill and implied that we couldn't eat or drink another ounce. Since the drinks were essentially free we ordered the cheese curds which did not disappoint these Sconnies. We each ordered a burger (Smokin' Gouda and Fire Truck) and split them with eachother. They were both very good, and much more satisfying than the other burger joints in town. My only suggestions are to change the buns that are used and to offer a bison burger. Other than that, I look forward to returning for their HH soon! Definitely a 5 star restaurant for the Champlin area. read more

But venture toward the dining room for a very well put together menu with tons of yummy options and creative dishes. The "chefs revenge" is a fun item... And turned out to be a delicious surprise. First time visiting Mavericks. My wife and I were pleasantly surprised of the quality of our selections. My chicken sandwich was very flavorful, wife's mini pulled pork sliders were very good. Hidden gem is the best description! After a few bites, my husband kept saying how he was so glad we found this place - usually I'm the one who gets excited over restaurants! The service was top notch - offered recommendations, steered us to anything from the wood grill, and was funny. Our server should get a raise! Food - it was awesome. We were starving as we are later in the evening, so we split the spinach and artichoke dip (pita and chips), hubby had a side salad, I had the Smokin' Gouda burger (num) and hubby had the chicken sandwich version of the Fire Truck. I could've done without the fries. But everything else was amazing. Hands down the best spinach dip I've had. And wow- off the grill- anything would have that awesome smokey taste which was too good. And the house made whiskey sauce!!!! Prices were so reasonable- it was a Tuesday night so a beer cans with the burger for a great deal! The room was not what we expected. We are in the beautiful and intimate dining room with the fireplace and felt transported to a fancier restaurant up north. We can't wait to go this summer when the patio opens! I went in for brunch, I got the prime rib hash. The meat was fully cooked and had a gray taste and color to it. It was suppose to be smothered in hollandaise sauce but it was hard to tell that there was any at all. They also don't have poached eggs, it seems odd to offer an eggs benedict without poached eggs. Our waitstaff took awhile to take our order but in general were nice. Probably wont come back for breakfast. read more

Bottomline of the story (short story) Long wait for service after seated, had to ask multiple times for items and drinks, had to ask if our food was ready yet, got the 2 orders mini macs cold without the 1000 island dressing, got the mini corn dogs STILL FROZEN in the middle, forgot a side of fries, and server spilt water on us while refilling our water glasses. the ladies next to us complained that their was not enough meat on her french dip and our same server was helping them said "Im sure the cook isn't low balling you on the meat" and didn't offer her more or even a solution. we got up right after our food showed up and didn't eat. walk to the entrance and told the hoist we wanted to speak to the manager . THE MANAGER WAS THE COOK. Told him about our experience and told him we weren't paying for the 3 beer and cocktail. I thought that was fair seeing we wasted probably and hour...hour and thirty there waiting for nothing. also thought the bus guy was drunk on the job. had glasses short hair skinny server was some kid with long black hair, skinny jeans. manager was a bald man with a mustache. read more

Service was really slow, nice kid, but took about 20 minutes to get our aps. Cocktails were spendy and nothing special. I had the beef stroganoff, it was the special. Had a ton of rosemary and was not chopped up and had corkscrew noodles. It did have big chunks of beef in it though. My b/f had fish and chips, said it was ok. My husband and I have been to Maverick's twice now. The first time we sat in the lounge area, which is a cozy little bar area. The servers were nice and the food was good - he had the steak and I had the turkey pesto sandwich. My husband did not care for the horseradish mashed potatoes. We were able to get in within about 15 minutes despite not having made a reservation. The second time we made a reservation - it was a Friday night - and sat in the dining area, which is a completely separate room (separate entrance). It's definitely quieter, but my husband and I prefer the lounge. That might be partly because we were in a booth in the lounge and more in the middle of the room at a table in the dining room. We both got burgers that were delicious. The fries were good too. Service was also great and friendly in the dining room. It's feels a little fancier than the lounge (although jeans are still ok). We saw all kinds of people eating there - kids, groups of friends, couples, and a birthday gathering. Overall: It's a nice, quiet, out of the way place with great service and really good food. A nice addition to our date night rotation. read more

This place is a complete & total joke. I had to triple check that I had the right place when I saw the 4 star rating pop up. Friends of ours made a reservation for a large group for a Sunday birthday brunch (approx 20 people). She even called the morning of to double check that they would have tables set up for us - they said they'd be ready. As the group began arriving the staff first ignored us & then begrudgingly began pulling tables together, including carrying them from another part of the restaurant. We found our seats & waited for a server...and waited...and waited...eventually 1-2 people walked over to the bar & asked for drinks. We contemplated writing out a list of the drinks we wanted to order ourselves. Finally our server was sent over (young guy with facial piercings & shoulder-length black hair) & said "Everyone on the same tab, right?" We told him no & he said "Order with the people you're with then" & we agreed. He took drink orders for the group but skipped right over the birthday boy & his girlfriend! We had to chase him down & ask him to come back to the table to get their order. He did & about 15 minutes later drinks started arriving (delivered by another employee who had no idea who ordered what). 90% of what we asked for arrived, again we chased down staff to get the missing items. We had 3 young kids with us so their attention spans were nearing their end & we hadn't even had the chance to order food yet. Estimating the long wait ahead, we (just my husband, child & I) decided to forgo breakfast altogether. The server finally took the group's order & we hung around for a bit longer to socialize with our friends. Not ONCE did the server return to ask if anyone wanted more drinks. Not ONCE did they help us accommodate additional members of our group who arrived late (they just got their drinks from the bar). At one point we were rudely instructed to move aside so the staff could use the walkways to deliver food, yet we had no place to talk since our table didn't fit our group. In the end, we departed 90 minutes after having arrived & the food was not yet on the table. I don't even want to know how long it took because it was so aggravating that we drove all that distance to celebrate with friends & were treated so poorly. Our group surely brought in the bulk of the brunch business that day & was entirely unappreciated & disrespected. I'll also add that the entire place is very dark, dingy & depressing. My family & I drove through at Culvers after we left & got 10x the customer service! Sad... read more

Good luck with the service. The bartender is so negative, and staff either sits at bar or are wondering around, i witness multiple staff walk by instead of asking if the food was alright? But nope they'd walk right past an go take a shot behind the bar or walk around the room. Also good luck getting the bartenders attention and when you do he comes off disrespectful and ignorant. Try this place every year or two to see if they have improved, sadly they remain mediocre. Waited at our table for over 5 min for a server to order drinks--not a good start. Margaritas were ok. Had fish tacos, which were unremarkable. No seasoning on fish. Huh? Served with salad, no dressing? And side of brow rice. Strange mix, not well executed. Will try again in 2018. read more

The atmosphere was great and love the neighborhood feel of the place. Service was great and the drinks were perfect, and all day happy hour to boot!!! But now to my food... I ordered the pork chop dinner and would have taken a picture but they were to small!!! By no means was I expecting JD Hoyts quality but what I got was not even truck stop quality. 2 small boneless pork chops of the Cub variety... They were so dry (even with the whiskey glaze) that my Big Ginger went really fast. The mashed potatoes were on the cold side and also dry. Well am willing to give it another try but will stick with cocktails and burgers which I hear are good... read more
