Went in for an inspection and the guy refused to do it. He said a part was missing but said part was not even listed as required to pass NYS inspection and had never heard of it before. This morning I called and made an appointment for a state inspection, they had an availability the same day. The man on the phone was nice and helpful. I asked if I needed someone to pick me up and do a drop off or if it would be quicker than that, and he said that wasn't necessary and I could wait inside. I came to my appointment on time, they took my keys and I had a seat. An hour later, I see my car has not moved and I ask what the status is as it's been an hour. Someone named "Chet" at the desk said my car is next, and then it will take 30-40 minutes to get the inspection done. I told him I made an appointment and was told I didn't need a drop off but I've been here for an hour already. He asked who said I would not need a pick up, and the other man on the phone at the desk raised his hand. While I am speaking to "Chet", the phone rang, and while I was talking to his face and he answered the phone. WHILE I WAS SPEAKING TO HIM. That was next level. Austin, the one who I made the appointment with on the phone, came and gave me an update on my car about 30 minutes later, calmly and clearly explained what I might need in the coming months. He was very professional and courteous, apologized profusely for the wait and seeing the service I received from his coworker, and he covered the service. So between the two of them, I've landed on three stars. One for "Chet" and 5 for Austin. All in all it took about 2 hours with an appointment. read more

I stopped at Midas to see if I could get them to take a look, hoping they could fit me in at some point that day? Not only did they take my car right away, they fixed it at no charge. UPDATE TO MY ONE-Star review (02/13/20) The new Manager, Scott has turned this place around and won back my loyalty. I had several bad experiences here in the past- mostly due to customer service, a prickly manager/crew and a pervading sense that I was being bilked for work not needed. Scott and his #2 Zachary are working hard to reverse the poor ratings and one star reviews. It's a palpable change of energy here. Twice now I have felt I was being treated fairly and flexibility on rates has been very helpful. There is no longer a sense of dread or depression coming from the bays. The place is a little more well-kept, though they do need to fix broken lock on bathroom door during quiet times. Mostly I am happy to feel like I can return and be heard and seen by Scott and treated respectfully and fairly. OLD REVIEW: This place has gone from "ok" to a pit. I was a loyal customer for three years when Daren was manager. Wait times were long but I got a sense that the team cared and was at least greeted with a "hello." I counted this location as my "go to" and my confidence was building. Since he left (and apparently several crack mechanics followed him) I haven't had need to return. Today the story has changed. The new manager (a surly young tattooed "dude" ) barely looked up during our exchange, much less paid any sense of investment in the customer service area. Mind you, it was 8:30am and there were only two cars in the bays--not a busy day; no excuses to start a new relationship with such attitude. I had a tire blow out 400 miles into my 1,000 mile trip the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. A competitor suggested Mavis Gardiner because of the large inventory that they carry. At first, David said he couldn't get me in that day as they were booked solid and short handed. But when I explained my dilemma that I was far from home and concerned that the donut spare would not make it 600 miles, much less not having a spare if I had another flat, he found a way to fit me in. I have had almost all of my oil changes, inspections, tire services and purchases, brakes, suspension, and repairs done at this location for the past 7 years, through name changes, management changes etc. Almost every time I do go here I've made an appointment, but end up waiting on average over an hour for my car to be taken into the garage to be serviced. I think to myself...one more chance, or new management maybe they've improved...they continually disappoint. Today after being informed my appointment time couldn't be honored because of a back up of inspections ( I've heard this excuse before from them on two occasions) I will not be giving this establishment another chance. I hope they keep in mind that last year alone I spent roughly $2500 on one visit. With the yearly total equaling roughly $5000. Best of luck, and mow your lawn! July 3, 2023 "BRAKE" a red warning light and "ADD BRAKE FLUID" light appeared on the dashboard. I added brake fluid but it leaked out. I called Mavis in Gardiner NY and explained what was going on. They said the brake line(s) were leaking fluid and it was dangerous to drive the vehicle bc your brakes may not work. I asked if I brought them the car today (July 3rd) they would assess the problem. Mavis Indicated they would look at it right away and maybe even fix it the same day. I had it TOWED there ($125) by a TOWING COMPANY. Mavis had the car at 9:30 a.m. on July 3rd. I waited to hear from Mavis about the status but Never received a call. I called Mavis at 2:30 p.m. I was told it was as on the lift. "Nothing was wrong with the brake lines, they were fine. The brake hoses needed to be replaced." They (Mavis) couldn't get the parts until July 5th. So they didn't even look at the car for many hours, therefore couldn't order parts and didn't tell me about it. This went on for 5 more days and I NEVER got a callback to tell me anything at any time. I had to call them every time. This was the first part of a many step process towards what I believed was getting my car safe for me and everyone else To be on the road. Summary: I picked up the car 6 days later. The store manager was rude. The bill was $954.00. After a few days of driving the car the brake warning lights are back on the dashboard. This is the same problem I had when I had it TOWED IN TO MAVIS on July 3rd. Mavis replaced back brakes and hoses and the warning lights were still ON. When backing the car out to test drive or, a brake line "blew"l (Mavis terminology). That added another day to the ordeal. Only one brake line was replaced. I told them when I had the car towed in on July 3rd that it needed brake line replacement. Mavis told ME it did not. Mavis then looked elsewhere for the cause of the red warning lights. Brakes were replaced and they didn't need to be. I know this because I just had a NYS Inspection. I asked specifically about brakes and was assured they were good. Hoses were replaced and they didn't need to be. Five days into this I asked the store manager why it was taking so long and he told me there was people ahead of me. Five days! It's clear that my car was not their priority, and that anyone who came in ahead of me was taken care of before me, Mavis's store manager told me that he got nothing but excellent Google comments about his service. I believe that positive comments are posted and not the real ones. After I brought my car there in good faith, I was charged an exorbitant amount of money and still have the same problem. In my experience, Mavis appears to be racking up sales by making unnecessary repairs in an attempt to increase their sales and not necessarily to fix your car. I only know my experience, a very, very bad one. I would recommend thinking seriously before doing business with Mavis. If you must stay with vehicle the whole time and do not leave it. Ask technicians questions and do not feel hat the advice Mavis technicians give you are from competent car mechanics. Use your own judgment And be prepared to spend the day there or more. Maybe your car will even be fixed. read more

Got it back and realized a week later that they'd taken off the relatively unworn tires the car had come with (it is less than a year old) and replaced them with two different brands of much more worn tires. I went for an inspection and even though the car did not pass they had me remove all medical equipment from the car to check seatbelts then I waited another 30 mins for him to tell me all things that are wrong and it would be 500 + to get it fixed to pass he was trying to muscle me with flextime tires, credit card payments then they removed the sticker no explanation and reminded me I had to pay for a failure. It was so embarrassing removing medical equipment as I am a mobil nurse onto the floor it was almost as if the enjoyed me bending in the gravel to try and get my things together even if my car failed for a tire being too smooth and back brakes they were very cold and disheartening. I left not really knowing what the hell happened no explanation other than to pay or make me feel like an hostage so I left and I will fix everything someplace else. Now, before you think that this Mavis location will give you bad service, think again. I've had several encounters with this location for services ranging from simple NY inspections to actual work on my vehicle and I've had a few types of experiences. Yes, they're a chain so they're going to be forced by their superiors to upsell you in services that you could probably do at a later time. They're proficient at getting the job at hand done and I've never had an experience that made me think they weren't decent mechanics or technicians. I've been pleased the last few times I've been in in that they seem to have greatly improved where before they were somewhat rude (this is going back a few years) and now they are efficient and polite. I don't know if the management was changed, or just new employees were hired, but a significant improvement was noted. I would recommend them for basic car services such as oil changes, brakes, bulb changes, wiper installation, inspections, tires. I wouldn't think of them first for more intense and time consuming jobs. O read more

I made an appointment to replace my front tires today. Someone from the store called to push back my appointment to a later time, which I agreed to. I showed up to my appointment and was told the wait was another 40 min. I agreed to come back. When I arrived the same person told me "not happening today", like this- not even an "I am sorry or can I schedule you another appointment?" Nothing. I have worked in the customer service field and I understand that sometimes people call out, but the assumption that my time is not valuable is what makes me the most irritated. I went for a fully synthetic oil change and requested a tire rotation. It was written on the work order. I had previously marked my tires since I had a suspicion they were not rotating them from the last time I had my oil changed there. Sure enough, the tires were not rotated. When I went back in and stated that they weren't rotated the guy at the service desk shrugged his shoulders and looked like he couldn't care less. He said "Oh, come back anytime and we will rotate them." I will not be coming back there, even though I have been coming there for years for oil changes. Last spring I was told that I would need new tires before the winter. The tires only lasted approximately 20,000 miles Daren, the manger at that time, said he would sell me different tires at a discount. I had him write it in the back of one of his business cards with his signature. I went back yesterday to get the tires and there is a new manager. He said he would have to talk to Daren and would call me later that day. No call so I called this morning. After being on hold for more than 5 minutes I was told that Daren did not make that agreement and would not be honored. Got a quote for tires, then was overcharged by almost 200 more, then waited almost 2 1/2 hours and on top of that they told me they couldn't rotate my tires because it would be more beneficial for me in the long run, when I was told by my dealership to get them rotated whenever I got my new tires. Should have just gone with the dealership, would have been cheaper, and better customer service. I will not be returning. There is no communication and management is all over the place. STAY AWAY from Mavis Discount Tire in Gardiner, NY. They do not know what they're doing. Spend the extra money and get your tires installed elsewhere- a place where they will actually do the job right the first time. I came here to buy new tires. Along with the tires I paid for installation and a tire alignment. After having all of this done, my tires weren't aligned. I called Mavis and they said they would take a look at it and re-align them if needed. They had to redo the alignment, which was done without charge. As I was driving home I immediately noticed that in order to drive straight, my steering wheel had to be turned to the right. Obviously they did not properly align the tires. I took my car back to Mavis to ask for my money back as they couldn't do the job right. They asked if they could check to see if they weren't aligned and I signed a receipt that said "Check Alignment". I specifically said that they can check, but do not redo the alignment since I didn't want them messing up again. The manager, Darren, came out and informed me that the tires weren't aligned and that they were fixing it. I told him I never said for them to re-do the alignment and he tried to play it as if I said for them to fix it. Don't put words in my mouth- all I said was they could check and that I wanted my money back. After a brief dispute I got my money back for the alignment. Took my car to a local shop with a great reputation to have my tires aligned properly. When I picked up my car, which now has perfectly aligned tires, they told me that Mavis didn't align them whatsoever (I have a copy of the report of the tire alignment before and after). They also said one of my tires was LOOSE! This is a safety hazard. I do not recommend Mavis Discount Tire whatsoever. After having my tires "aligned" 3 TIMES, they still weren't aligned. I had to take my car to a completely different shop. It's as if they're doing this on purpose so you have to come back sooner to buy new tires. They're corrupt and need to re-evaluate their work ethic. read more

Had to get my tire replaced and they fit me in no problem without an appointment on a Saturday. It took about two hours to get me in, change my brakes and rotors, and change my tire. Very thankful as i had work later in the day and needed a car to get there safely! Gave me a good discount for all of the things I needed done. I brought some parts in that I couldn't fix myself and they were very polite in explaining what needed to get done and working with me to find a good price for labour, parts, etc. Would definitely recommend to anyone in the area. I have been a Mavis customer for over 20 years and have been generally happy with their service. This has now changed. My tale of woe: The TPMS light kept coming on every few weeks, and after filling up with air, it immediately went out. I brought my car (a 2013 Toyota Prius model 3) into the Lawrence, NY location (facility # 7098624) on 8 June 2019 to have the tire checked for a leak and repaired. I was told that my TPMS was leaking around the stem and I needed an entirely new unit because the washer could not be replaced. I have since found out this to be false. I confirmed with the manager that Mavis would re-program the TPMS. After having Mavis replace the TPMS, the TPMS light remained on and I was told that it could take a day for it to turn off. Experience has shown that when I have filled a tire up in the past the light extinguishes within a minute. I bought the car back the next day with the light still on and was told it was never programmed. The TPMS system was re-programmed by Mavis, and the light went out, only to come back on within a week. I brought it back, it was reprogrammed, the light extinguished only to come back on within 2 days. I brought it back and was told it went back on because the tire pressure was low, Mavis filled the tire and the TPMS light stayed off for a day. Remember, I originally brought the car in because I suspected a leak in the tire. On 25 June 2019, when I got to my car at 4 AM to go to work, the tire was completely flat. Fortunately, I have an electric air pump and re-inflated the tire, drove an hour and 40 miles to work. I checked on the tire around noon and it was totally flat again. I called roadside assistance to install the spare, only to find out that the lug nut lock I was given back by Mavis was not mine, did not fit my lug nut lock and so the wheel could not be removed. Roadside assistance was able to plug the tire while on the car, which cost $30. As he rotated the tire to find the leak, it was obvious that something was inside the tire, banging around. I returned to Mavis on 29 June and was told by the manager on duty (Travis) that he was only there temporarily, there was nothing he could do, and I needed to get in touch with corporate. When he tried to pull up my customer record, he could not find it. The previous manager put in my plate as a dealer plate, without a number. He also misspelled my name and put in the incorrect model number of my car (it is a 3, not a 5). This is the information from the invoice: Work Order # 248834, Invoice # 637629, cash sale (even though it was a credit card sale), $124.90. I have been in touch with the local Toyota dealer, who has a master key and can replace my wheel locks at a cost of around $120 for parts, labor and tax. I have called Mavis customer service to report this fiasco (ticket # 375934) and was told by Esteban I would get a call back 2 July "at the latest" from Thomas Davis. Naturally, in keeping with Mavis' fine customer service, I never got a call back. This is what I expect from Mavis: Refund of $123.90 for an unnecessary part and programming. Payment of $120 for parts, labor and tax for Toyota to replace my wheel locks because Mavis lost my key. Payment of $30 for the fixing of the leaking tire while on my car (which Mavis neglected to fix in the first place). No charge to me for removal of the tire from the wheel to remove whatever is inside, re-balance and replace on car. Total payment due me: $173.90 read more

They have convenient hours (open on Sunday!), and even though they were quite busy and backlogged that day, they completed the inspection earlier than I had anticipated, and called me as soon as my car was ready. read more

Every single time I've gone here, I've ended up with more problems. First, my brake lines suddenly needed service when I brought my car in for something completely unrelated. I gave them the benefit of the doubt because they showed me the leak. Hundreds of dollars later, I get my car back and I can barely brake!!! Maybe they forgot to tighten something or put something back, but this mistake could've been SO dangerous, and the ride home was absolutely terrifying. Of course I called them immediately and to their credit they fixed it within a day but the fact remains that no mechanic should make a mistake that large. Fast forward to a routine oil change. As usual they try to up sell me about $700 worth of body work that I don't need. A couple of weeks later my oil light comes on and I bring it into my local mechanic who proceeds to tell me that oil has leaked all over my engine and will now cost me close to $1800 to fix. I wish I could personally warn everyone against this Mavis as it has brought me nothing but grief even for getting the simplest things serviced. Disappointed is an understatement. We had a tire blow out on the NY Thruway on a Sunday. A tow truck came and put on our spare, and we immediately started calling tire stores for a replacement spare. I called the number for the closest Mavis tire store, and Gardiner, and was told that they had one tire available. We would've liked two, But we were happy to take what we could get. They put our name on the tire, and said they would hold it for us. I told him we were on our way. A half an hour later, after driving a trailered boat through New Paltz, we were almost there. My phone rang. It was them, telling us that the tire was already sold, And that we had spoken to the call center not the store. I don't understand A) why the call center didn't put me directly through to the store and B) why did the call center not know that the tire was already sold?
