From the comforting congee loaded with pork blood, liver, and gizzards (because why settle for just one innard?) to the egg yolk fried shrimp that proves everything is better with a little egg yolk magic, every dish was a winner. We came shortly after they opened as we had to get to the airport for an afternoon flight. They filled up quickly as this place is always busy from morning to late afternoon. The service was limited but fast and efficient. You just have to be assertive and wave someone down when you're ready to order or get the bill. The Congee was great as usual. This is the place we go to when we are craving congee and we're too lazy to make it at home lol. The XO lo bak gao is a hit or miss here. This last visit was definitely a hit! It was done perfectly with a soft interior and chrisp exterior - paired with their table chili oil and it tastes amazing. The wonton weren't goid this time around because of the soggy bottom. Meaning the only Chinese food he likes is Canto. Nothing. Else. No Northern, no Taiwanese, no spicy Chongqing, no other areas outside of GZ. He's a strange one. He didn't complain much. As long as the flavours don't stray too far from his norm, he's happy. I've been here a couple of times and I find the food to be a bit heavy on the MSG, my personal nemesis. It depends on what you order if you need a hit. I don't mind it here. Old Bean likes it. I can definitely see the appeal. Prices are reasonable, and there's typically a line up out the door during the rush. Recommend you come here off hours so you don't have to wait. Service can be hit or miss. We came on a Saturday and there were a lot of people waiting. We waited around 15-20 minutes for a table. As turnover is so fast they don't have enough time to clean the tables. It feels a bit sticky inside We ordered fish and peanuts congee ($9.50), fish maw and sea slug congee ($13.95), salty chinese Donut ($3.95), wonton ($12.95), crispy fish lo me (13.80) and sweet chinese Donut (3.95) The fish and peanut congee had lots of peanut inside. One bowl is around 4 small bowls of congee. Lots of ingredients inside. Their congee is very smooth and the rice grains have almost disappeared. The salty chinese Donut and the sweet chinese Donut are both either over fried or the oil is old. Both of these were too dark. The salty chinese Donut was crispy but didn't taste fresh. Would not get these again The other fish maw congee we got did not actually have fish maw in it. It was actually fish stomach. But it was still not bad The highlight here is ALWAYS the fried shrimp wonton. They have the best fried wonton. They are fried perfectly crispy and fresh the shrimp is just cooked and super crunchy. Perfectly seasoned and that sweet and sour sauce they provide gives it that perfect sweetness. If I could I would come here and just order this one dish. The lo men was meh. Very dry (i know its a dry noodle but still too dry). Noodle wasn't chewy enough. The flavour wasn't what I was looking for (if you know what I mean). It was lacking that extra something something. Feel like having some rice porridge on a cold day...so we went to Double Double not just for the粥 also for their steamed rice rolls (滑腸粉). we shared a pork liver+fish porridge, plate of deep fried tiny silver fishes, steamed rice rolls and a long doughnut. The place was hopping on a weekday noon time, table quite close together but the food is good value and everything cooked properly. I came here with my family while on vacation in Vancouver. It was still pretty busy around 2pm on a weekday, and you could tell why as the food was amazing (especially since we don't have many Chinese restaurants back in San Diego). I had the prawn wonton noodle soup which was delicious, and the wontons were filled with shrimp. We also ordered minced beef congee which is the best congee I think I've ever had, and a stir fry vegetable which was also good. We also ordered the Chinese donut which was very good, it was a little different than the ones I've had in Taiwan but in a good way (less oily). The rice roll was also really good, I normally don't like the texture but I liked this one and the sauce on top. The service was a bit slow as it was so busy, we had to ask a few times for a fruit juice I ordered and the restaurant felt a bit hot/stuffy, but other than that I would definitely recommend coming here. I bookmarked this place after a small YouTube channel raved about the XO turnip cake, saying it's better than Alice's Kitchen in Monterey Park. Admittedly when I tried Alice's I had no access to HK cuisine so I loved Alice's and hence had to give this place a go. The XO turnip cake seems really popular given all the photos of it here on Yelp. Alas, it did not hold up to the high praise, it was not to my taste. On the plus side it is crispy. On the down side, there is barely any XO flavour, when you eat it (without bean sprout) still all you can taste is bean sprout. There is not a lot of lap cheong in the turnip cake and I don't think there was any dried shrimp. There are so many pictures of zha leung on here too and I presume by their name they are known for chinese donut so I got a half order. I feel like day+ old donut was used, like it was refried at some point. Really crispy inside. Rice roll OK. We got a sweet donut (#2) to try and it was a surprise treat. It goes well with hot soy milk. Lastly, ordered crispy sweet and sour fish. It isn't crispy at all. It was really hot, so I would think it was recently fried and not been sitting around waiting, getting soggy from the sauce. But none were crispy. Meat was flaky though. If you can say the name of your dishes in Mandarin or Cantonese, then you will be fine. I couldn't for some of my dishes, so I had a bit of trouble. There are waitstaff that speak English but the person who took our order doesn't really. We pointed to menu items and said their English name. They read back the order and it sounded like they said the cantonese name for salt and pepper fish, so I repeated and repointed to sweet and sour fish, at which point they kinda raised their voice in Cantonese saying I asked for [dish name I don't know]. The table next to us only spoke Mandarin or English, he tried to order by saying the item number in Mandarin, but the same waitstaff didn't know and asked him in Cantonese what it was. It's a true Cantonese place! We were there on a Sunday night for dinner and the place was packed! They're famous for their fried dough, very crunchy on the outside and soft inside! We had the preserved egg & salty pork congee (it was very creamy, really didn't taste like regular congee I had before)! I went here with my family on July9th. Heard this place was good via Yelp so we decided to dine here for breakfast. We waited from 10AM waiting until 10:15, the staff let us in even though the opening time was a bit early. We had Steamed Rice Roll with Mixed Sauce ($5.95), Seafood Congee ($10.95 bowl) and Fish Maw Congee with Dry Scallop ($12.50 bowl) were pretty good. We enjoyed all the food on the order. I am declaring this place has the best congee in the western hemisphere, very possibly the world since I've not had them like this in HK. I would easily give it a 5 stars but... Congee - There are many congee items... Minced beef (The real HK style minced beef is mixed with crunchy rice vermicelli), seafood one called "like boat" (comes with squid, crisp pork skin, shrimp, peanuts etc), or meat balls and many buy all use the same congee base. The congee is creamy... Must use lots of 腐皮. You will know what I mean on your first bite. I haven't seen many places that can do it. But then I'm only visiting Vancouver. At least it's non existing in SF bay area. The 糭 is ok. The rice is not soft enough and like everything else, there isn't enough soy sauce. These are special soy sauce they made. It's sweet. Use for rice roll and 糭. Rice roll - Not enough soy sauce and other sauce. Very disappointing. Just for that I was tempted to give it 3 stars. Fried wonton - every one can do a good fried wonton since the skins (wonton wrapper)are the same. However, they put a lot of shrimp in side and they are fresh. Frankly, I didn't order this dish, not special enough. They have much more selection to try. We went there for breakfast but they have many dinner dishes that looks very attractive. Visited Double Double due to a recommendation from a friend and it certainly did not disappoint. Our table was quickly seated within a few minutes and the vibes gave your typical bustling Chinese restaurant. The staff definitely reciprocated better when communicated to in Cantonese or Mandarin instead of English. There was a wide variety of Congee, what I mainly came for. I ordered the Preserved Egg & Salted Pork Congee as well as a Salted Chinese Doughnut. The congee was wonderfully silky and contained a good ratio of toppings to congee. This congee was some of the best that I've had in North America and was super reminiscent of a piping hot bowl of congee from Hong Kong. Always love coming here. Comfort food at its finest. This place is almost always busy in the mornings/early afternoons and especially on weekends, so be prepared to wait. The parking lot is a guaranteed gong show no matter what time you go, but the wait and frustration are well worth it. After seeing mixed reviews here, I was hesitant to try this spot out but boy I was impressed. There was a line and a bit of a wait when I arrived around 11:30 am but I was seated fairly quickly. I ordered the sweet youtiao, rice rolls with youtiao, bbq pork and sausage rice rolls, and the congee with fish maw, scallops, and sea cucumber. Everything I tried was so good. I have the biggest sweet tooth so I did enjoy the sweet youtiao, very fluffy and soft which is a different experience for me. It reminded me of a lot of the pastry options at Chinese bakeries. The rice roll with youtiao was also so pleasing; a good variety of sauces to dip them in. The bbq pork and sausage rice roll was by far my favorite item here, as the pork had such a strong juicy flavor that went well with the rice noodles. Quite the flavor explosion. Finally, the congee was the right consistency and the fish maw and scallops tasted great and had a nice soft texture. I love seafood so that's always a plus. We came here for their famous fried radish cake and rice noodle rolls, but end up getting the lobster noodle. Just cause the promotional poster made it look so attractive.  Was it good? Yes. Was it good bang for the buck? Meh....  Double double is one of those "dai pai dong" places that comes up with dishes to hit your specific cravings, and then make you crave for those same things again next week. Whether its deep fried, greasy , or savory cravings, hey have dishes that are uniquely made to hit that spot. While we were waiting by the door for a seat, and contemplating on what else to get, our attention got drawn to the lobster poster. So we bailed out on the original carb heavy ideas.  It was a relatively small lobster, with a couple good pieces. It was fresh tasting and flavourful, the lobster does have the natural sweetness to the meat, which is great. and it's got just enough sauce to drench the noodles- just the way it should be. We were hoping that this $38 lobster plate meal would fill up 2 people. But unfortunately, we were both just about 60% full. Overall, we enjoyed the experience, but not likely to be back to order the same thing again. This was the first place that I visited that served Wonton Soup during my time in Vancouver for my trip and it was a good restaurant! I visited this restaurant yesterday at 7:15 P.M. and the ambience was pretty standard for your average Chinese restaurant. Also, the service was really good when I was ordering and I was swiftly seated when I entered the restaurant. They are attentive to their customers due to the fact that they check on you regularly to see if you need any refills. Furthermore, the food I ordered arrived pretty fast, only taking ten minutes to make an appearance. The first thing that I ordered was the Chinese Donut which had a perfect level of sweetness, an outside that was very crunchy, and an inside that was really soft. The next thing that I ordered was the Tong Choy that was seasoned with garlic which was cooked well and had a nice texture. Also, the garlic flavor of the vegetable was not too overwhelming, having the perfect amount of flavor. The third thing that I ordered was the Wonton Soup with Yu Choy and Rice Noodle which had a soup that was seasoned perfectly. Also, the Yu Choy was seasoned well, cooked well, and had a good texture. Furthermore, the Wonton had a good texture and a wrapper that was not too thick or thin. Last, the Rice Noodle was seasoned to perfection and had a good texture. Double Double re-upped Last visit: Feb 28, 2019 Last Sept, the Mrs wanted to try a local hidden gem, the highly rated HK style "Double Double Restaurant & Wonton" First, this isn't Michelin dining; just budget friendly Chinese food. But the quality of food that arrived exceeded expectations; both quality & quantity. We started with the Chinese doughnut in rice noodle (crispy donut in rice noodle)... Crispy, not greasy, and the portion was huge! 5 stars. $6, they also have a half portion for $3.95. We've always ordered the full portion. Next came the crispy won tons (crisped to perfection, not greasy, and ample dipping sauce), made with very fresh shrimp. 5 stars. A must have every time. At $8.95, *cheaper* than most food court ones, with better ingredients and a larger portion. The Thai style fried rice which included a poached egg with a nice runny yolk when I shredded the egg through the rice. One of the best Chinese fried rices we've ever had. 5 stars. Finally their signature sweet & sour pork (all meat, no bone, fat or inedible tendon). While very good, wasnt as elevated as the others. 4 stars The dishes all arrived quickly, weren't greasy, and best of all, the bill at the end was only $40. The single most expensive, and ironicaly least mind blowing dish was the sweet & sour pork (pork was very high quality meats, but I expected a more intense flavour, given that it was a signature dish. Still very good, though) This is definitely going into the rotation. Oh, and they actually accept debit cards (many local Chinese restaurants are cash only). *And* we actually had leftovers! Subsequent visits: Changed the black pepper beef noodle to crispy noodles; very high quality ingredients, but wish the black pepper flavour were more intense. However, it was one of the best beef chow mein I've ever had; just not much black pepper flavour. 4.25 stars. Thick satay beef noodle is very standard, again fresh ingredients but wish the flavour were more intense. 3.75 stars. On our 2nd visit we tried the honey garlic spareribs instead of sweet and sour pork. Even more flavourful. 4.25 stars. Our most recent visit, we ordered stir fried fish with vegetables. The brocolli was *excellent*, and the fish, while subtly flavoured, was again fresh and well cooked, hitting that sweet spot between undercooked and overcooked. 4.25 stars. Overall: 4.5/5 stars 8.9/10 Each time, the food has arrived quickly, and the service was good. Note that as per usual with casual Asian restaurants, you may have to share a table (with strangers) when it's busy. This is normal. Recommended: cripsy won tons, Thai style fried rice, chinese fried donut in rice noodles, (these first 3 are must haves for your first visit) black pepper beef chow mein (off menu; ask them to change the black pepper beef udon to chow meins), honey garlic spareribs, stir fried fish with vegetables (broccoli). Avoid: *nothing* so far, but the sweet and sour pork and the thick satay beef rice noodles were very standard (non-oily with fresh ingredients, but nothing extraordinary). The Congee blew my mind. I'm so glad Chef Tony's was full and we ate here instead. You can see the guys cooking fresh Youtiao (chinese donut) in the deep fryer nonstop. I'm a bit of a Congee connoisseur and I have to really give it to the Chinese Canadians. The congee they make is heads and shoulders above what we get in the states. Vancity and GTA representin! They stay true to the traditional non shortcut cooking methods of Hong Kong. The congee is silky smooth and it does not separate into a watery mess after it cools down. Even more impressive is that even the leftovers we put in the fridge did not turn watery when we reheated it the next morning. read more

Casual Cantonese restaurant in Empire plaza best known for their youtiao (Chinese doughnut) and congee. It's also one of those places you go to get crab and lobster for cheaper than the higher-end Cantonese restaurants. Mid-sized restaurant, and the place was busy on a Saturday evening. Out of our meal, the beef congee could use a little bit more salt, but otherwise was delicious. The congee and beef are very soft are smooth. Their pork stomach soup was pretty good too. The bamboo shoot appetizer was decent, and so were the pork feet. We tried their youtiao, which was more on the dense side. I like youtiao that is more crispy and with more puff, so their youtiao wasn't my favorite. The Dungeness crab with noodles was decent, while the stir-fried halibut was okay since there was equal amounts of halibut and broccoli. Based on the food, I'd have given this place 4 stars, but on that night they messed up our order, and we ended up waiting at least a half-hour extra for two of our main dishes. Double Double is my favourite congee restaurant in all of Vancouver. It is your classic Chinese restaurant - fast, affordable and big portions. Their congees are all great and they are famous for their Chinese donuts, which are a great pairing for congees in general. I highly recommend their Chinese donuts wrapped in rice rolls, the HK style sampan congee and the fried radish cake. For congee, you can choose between a small or large bowl. The small bowl is good to share with 2 people (several servings) and the large bowl can share between 4-5 people.
