Ok Maxies, Blue's Egg, Story Hill BKC, they're all good. These owners know what they're doing. Maxie's is advertised as a Southern restaurant, and they have a lot of good southern eats on they're menu. They have several different kind of ribs, from the saucy Kansas City to the tasty meat of St. Louis. My favorite are the Cajun items like Jambalaya and the Po' Boys. Now only if they had a Crawfish Boil...I don't think they do, do they? I've gotten the Jambalaya here and the Crawfish Po' Boy. Both are good, if you had to choose thoughd, go for the Jambalaya. It's an enormous dish, so you'll definitely get your fill. Maxie's has great deals for their curbside menu - takeout lunch. But, alas, they don't have it going on in the winter, so you'll have to wait till the warmer months to take advantage. I think the wait could be around 20 minutes if they are busy on the weekend, but otherwise, you shouldn't have a problem getting a table during the week. read more

Went here for the first time after having always wanted to go. The location is interesting. It's right off a freeway but the area is still quite active. It's not loud and it's quite pleasant. Every few minutes, someone would stroll through, which gave the area some life. We sat on the patio. As a graphic designer, I appreciated the rather large menu being presented as a horizontal placemat that easily fits on the table instead of a gigantic book that you struggle to find room for/covers your entire face as you struggle to open and read it. So many places don't nail simple things like this that really make a difference. On to the food: everything on the menu looked mouth-watering. It took us some time to decide. As an appetizer, we had the crab cake. It was very good and a perfect starter size. For entrees, I ordered the chicken-fried chicken, collard greens, and mashed potatoes. With a side of grits. My girlfriend had the half rack of baby back ribs and fries. We were very hungry. Now I definitely like soul food, but some minor personal preferences stopped me from loving it. The Tasso sauce on the grits and around my chicken was fine but a little too acidic. I'm not familiar with it or know if it's a common sauce in southern cooking, but it overpowered any other flavors. And the greens were cooked lightly in maple syrup which I didn't love, but we're good all the same. The only other thing was our server. Seemed very unsure of himself and what exactly he wanted to say to people. We witnessed him explain to a table that a menu item they used to stop serving because "it got bad", was now back if they wanted it. Doesn't sound appetizing to me. Seemed like a nice enough kid, he just needed to be a little more clear and confident. Overall, I enjoyed the food and atmosphere and so did my girlfriend. We will definitely be back for more. Always a great time and you'll enjoy anything you have! The atmosphere is dynamic and friendly, loud at times, and never rushed. The drinks and food are reasonably priced and the charm of the south is brought to life by the building you dine in. I've had the ribs, red beans and rice, gumbo, catfish, jambalaya, crawfish, oysters and many different cocktails and beer. You CANNOT make a mistake on this menu. The cornbread has a hint of lemon and is not too heavy to bog down the rest of your meal. I've dined as a table of two and as many as a table of 8; the staff are always accommodating. Wait times can be long so call ahead for seating approximately 30-40 min. Although the wait times are long, the hostess and staff are realistic and underpromise. Parking is limited but a small lot is to the East of the building for one or two spots and handicapped individuals along with street parking an a lot to the west with about 20 spots. Just had happy hour oysters (6) for an app, they were really good a bit of shell, but that happens sometimes. For dinner we both had the fish fry, it was nice and light, it wasn't greasy or salty at all. Our waitress was friendly and attentive, the owner stopped by our table among others. Generous portions and big flavor is how I would describe Maxie's. I ordered the baby back ribs, they come with baked beans, fries and a salad. The ribs where tender and flavorful, beans cooked and seasoned to perfection and the fries extra crispy. I'd recommend a stop to Maxie's if your ever in Milwaukee. read more

Maxie's is an awesome place to get some grub. It's the beet southern food restaurant in Milwaukee. The happy hour is the place to be at all times, it is from 4pm to 6pm and what you get is 1$ oysters and the daily specials. The 1$ oysters are 3 selected for that day and I usually come on Tuesday for fried chicken dinner or Thursday for ribs and Mac. The Tuesday chicken dinner in my opinion is pretty good. I have to say the collard greens were very good I had initially thought collard greens would be somewhat bitter but to my surprise they were very tasteful and flavorful. When I took the first bite it tasted sweet(not to sweet) and refreshing. The chicken itself was ok, I have had better(Nashville spicy fried chicken), the crispy skin was good but there was not enough of the crispy to go along with the chicken breast. read more

Was super excited to have my birthday dinner here last night with friends. I arrived after my friends. Waiter got me a whiskey. When I ordered the catfish I ask if the Cajun was really hot. He answered no. Plate arrive the catfish was burnt black. I asked him why he said I ordered blackened. I said no i ordered Cajun. He said "it's the same". Took one bite and it was way overly Spicy. I told him that he said it wouldn't be hot. He said "oh" and walked away. Gone for 30 minutes Others wanted plates and drinks. He was just absent. Returned and asked if we wanted dessert. They ordered cappuccino cream. It want even crème. It was runny. No one ate it. They told the waiter about it. Again he said "oh". Left the table and dropped off the bill. Was gone for at least 15 minutes. In other words Poot waiter and crappy food. Maxie's is a wonderful place. Frankly, I wish I could visit there more often but most people enjoy it just as much, or more than I do. With that being said, be planned to wait or gather a larger enough group that they will accept reservations (8 or more on Sunday through Thursday ONLY). If you are lucky enough to grab a table, you will want to gobble up the following items: Fried Green Tomatoes with remoulade ($7.50) - one of my favorites. The tomatoes are tart and lightly breaded with a spicy Cajun kick in the sauce. Peel-n-Eat Shrimp served chilled (1/4 lb. $6.95, 1/2 lb. $10.95). They are dusted with seasoning possibly Old Bay and served with cocktail sauce with a healthy amount of horseradish (bonus points). Many times these two items make a meal, but if I order an entree, it would hands down be the Shrimp & Grits - gulf shrimp, rich & spicy tasso sauce, over yellow grits (half $13.95 or full $17.95). I still have leftovers when I order the half, so I can only imagine what the full order looks like. Although it is busy, the volume is average and I had no problem projecting my "tiny" voice across the table. Parking can be a little tight on the street but they do have a small lot across the street that fills up fast. I would recommend visiting during the week if you can, but feel free to stop by on the weekend as long as you are prepared for a wait. The food should not disappoint. This Northern girl has some serious Southern roots. So this place was such a find in Wisconsin. The menu was so familiar to me, right down to the collard greens, shrimp and grits, and Southern barbecue. We ordered a little of everything, however, who would've thought the corn and arugula salad would be my very favorite thing we ate that night. I do wish our waiter had told us that we had ordered too much food. We truly thought we ordered "a little" of everything. But it was delicious! It was delicious for a couple of days! The decor is beautiful. Southern, without being over done. Staff was a little chilly, but nice - definitely no Southern charm. I can honestly say that I just don't get it. I love BKC, I like Blue's enough but Maxie's is just a consistent disappointment every time I go. We went for dinner again last night and officially deemed it our last visit. My two stars are for service and for drinks. I really actually like their drink menu, and HH gives you a buck off all of them. On Mondays they have $5 mojitos which is awesome too. The bartenders are skilled and the beer options are great. The fallout comes with the food. First off, the prices are INSANE. I was seeing $25 for a mediocre plate of overcooked meat, $14 for a bowl of burnt gumbo and $17 for "small plate specials." If this food was fantastic I'd complain less, but I ALWAYS leave wondering how and why I spent so much money on food I didn't like. The "broth" of the gumbo literally tastes dirty. The sauce on their fatty ribs tastes like it came out of a jar. Their slaw is slimy and thick, the fried tomatoes are covered in a tasteless batter, I seriously just-dont-get-it. I'm really glad that so many other people like this place, it just isn't for me--find me at Story Hill. read more

Absolutely incredible. The wait staff was excellent, a little busy and noisy, but fun. I had a half dozen raw oysters on ice which were fresh and delicious. Followed by the crab and corn chowder which was packed full of flavor, and finished with the frog more stew. Had tons of seafood and a very nice flavor. My wife had the chicken fried chicken, which was also excellent. Great priced happy our every day 4 to 6. We will definitely be back. A really great evening. read more

I dined here tonight by myself, and I had what can only be described as an existential dinner experience. This was seriously one of the best meals I've had in a very long time. I walked in at about 6:45 and the dining room was packed, as was the lower bar, so I went upstairs and sat at the small bar there instead. The bartender, Clarissa, was polite and friendly. The meal came with their homemade cornbread and orange-honey butter. Phenomenal. After checking out the menu, I opted to start with the oysters on the half shell, which were obviously fresh and which I'm partial too anyhow. I got a half dozen, 2 of each of the ones they had to offer. They came with fresh lemons, cocktail sauce, horse radish, and mignonette. I then ordered the hot fried chicken dinner, which came with maple collard greens, mashed red bliss potatoes, and a slice of Texas toast. The potatoes were good, but the collard greens were exceptional and the chicken, which consisted of a wing, thigh, drum stick, and breast was some of the best I've ever had anywhere, including Hot Heads in Bayview. The chicken itself was juicy and tender, the breading was savory and flavorful and the hot butter had just the right amount of heat. It was seriously next level. I ended my meal with a slice of the chocolate banana coconut cream pie. I'm not sure who created this dessert, but whoever it was deserves a raise or a round of applause or a nice long hug at least because it totally blew my mind. Huge pieces of banana standing on end, with firm chocolate between each one, coconut custard on top, and whipped cream and toasted coconut garnish. It was a league of its own. For three courses and a Point root beer, it was about 35 bucks. A little over 42 with the tip. Not at all bad for the service and quality of the food. I will definitely return to check out more of the menu, and will definitely recommend to friends and family. Keep up the great work! read more

After hearing all the fuss and good things about Maxie's, I finally was able to eat here! Me and Isaac S. arrived around 7:30PM. We were pleased to find that there is patio seating, especially since it was a very pleasant evening. Making our way inside to visit the host to be seated, we were immediately frozen by the very very cold indoors. We put our name in, even though there were 6 empty and set tables available and proceeded to wait for about 10 minutes. This is my only large complaint. If there are open & set tables, allow your patrons to sit and prepare to order. I had no idea what to order it being the first time so I asked the waitress. The menu is very large, I suggest looking it over before you come. The waitress recommended the beaf brisket which ended up being what I had. Absolutely delicious!! KC style brisket definitely done right! The portions are also absolutely huge! You definitely get what you pay for here! They also have quite a large selection of specialty cocktails. I will definitely be coming back here just for dessert and drinks---and yeah the food too! Since we sat outside I didn't get a good look at main room indoors. I did notice that the floor could have used a good cleaning. The patio tables are also kinda awkward to sit behind. My legs kept hitting the supports--I'm only 5'7". This was our first time at Maxie's and if we're ever in the area again, we will be back. After a long drive from Chicago and a round of golf, we were not in the mood for drinks - which is a shame b/c who doesn't love a good hurricane or mojito?? We started with the fried green tomatoes - which I would skip if I was you. They just lacked the flavor I was expecting. The corn bread they provided was moist and came with a flavored (maybe citrus?) butter, but we didn't want to fill up too much. My husband and I shared the beef brisket (which came with fries and a corn and arugula salad) and the shrimp and grits (and added sausage). Both main dishes were really good. I'm usually a little picky about BBQ sauce, but whatever they used on the brisket was really good and it did not have any fatty pieces (like some places do!). The shrimp and grits had a nice kick (so if you're faint of heart - do not get). We at every last piece of food on our plates! The only downside of the meal was the corn and arugula salad. I wanted to like it, but neither one of us did - I think it was the dressing that put us off. We were stuffed by the end of the meal and did not have room for dessert...which was fine b/c someone online spoke of a bourbon pecan chocolate chip cookie but it's a special dessert they didn't have that night. DELICIOUS! The best New Orleans inspired food ever. Start you meal with a tart but sweet Hurricane to drink. My family LOVES the chicken wings and gumbo as appetizers. For the main course its almost impossible to choose because everything is fantastic, you cannot go wrong. The dessert never disappoints and fills in the cracks. Maxie's is somewhat of a gem for a few reasons. 1st being that is hidden away from a district where you might find a lot of great food and second that it's a great Cajun place in West Allis! (Or at least close to). You'll find traditional Cajun fare like gumbo or my personal favorite jambalaya. Both good and everything here is fairly large portions. I don't know that we have ever left without extra food. That's me the meat eater and my vegetarian girlfriend as they have plenty for her as well. I'm looking at you best salad and vegetarian jambalaya! As far as drinks go they have a fair selection of beers, wines, cocktails, mocktails (NA) and soda. There is a bar, the main dining room and extra space upstairs for the overflow which is common. If you think you're having dinner here I suggest using the Yelp app to get a spot in line before you leave the house. In addition to their annual Mardi Gras party that packs the house, their food stands alone and packs the place regularly as well. If your a fan of places like Blues Egg or Story Hill BKC, then you'll be a fan here as it's the same group with the same commitment to great food. Oh and the service is usually pretty great too.
