Came here for my moms birthday and right away got mediocre service from the hosts who were honestly kind of standoffish . We were sat a foot away from a large group which was already a little annoying. The server was great but the fact that we were charged for my moms birthday dessert is ridiculous never have I ever been charged for birthday desert. My family has been here on multiple occasions and almost always come here for birthdays and have never had this bad of an experience not sure we will be coming back. read more

I thought this place was just average. I was very excited to try it being a southern restaurant but it just fell flat for me. The good: my mom had a tequila old fashion which she loved. The crab cakes are LEGIT (I've never been to the east coast to have had one of those but compared to others in MKE these win). They were full of crab meat vs filler unlike many other places. Pretty good sized as well. The OK: the crawfish bites (called something else o the menu) were just fried pieces that didn't taste any different than some other fried app you get anywhere else. I got a seafood stew and I felt the shrimp was well over cooked and then the overall flavor was kinda bland. Overall I won't return and wouldn't recommend. I moved away (across the country away) and this is an essential stop during every visit back. Starters: MUST HAVE Cajun Popcorn. Yes, fried crawfish. Amazing. Fried Green Tomatoes. I hate tomatoes. I LOVE Fried Green Tomatoes. These are delicious. Let's talk BBQ. Not only does everyone's ribs fall off the bone, this place makes some of the very best vegetarian fare I have ever had. I personally love the BBQ Tofu plate (or sandwich, depending on my mood). Tofu WINGS! Oh how I missed Buffalo wings. Well, miss them no more. Sides: They are big. Before dinner: Oh, we can get a few sides and share them because we can't decide between the greens or the Mac N Cheese. After: We will take 16 boxes please. Their Mac N Cheese is perfect. PERFECT. Rich, creamy, tangy, Slight crunch of breadcrumbs on top. Perfect. My mouth is watering as I write this. I wish I could eat this right now. Please please please try the Pecan Crusted Trout! That hash they serve it with has changed my life. I have literally (yes LITERALLY, not like when people say literally when they mean figuratively, I really mean literally) begged and pleaded and bribed to try to get the cornbread recipe. They won't share it. Both it and the orange honey butter they serve it with are alone worth the visit. And they will bring you more and more to the table until you need to just eat your starter and ask for your meal to be boxed up to go. Yes, this has happened to me. Drinks? Not only do they have an impressive Bourbon selection, if you like a good cocktail, I strongly recommend the N'awlins Sazarac cocktail. It completely turned me on to Rye Whiskey. I now keep a bottle or two of Sazarac at home at all times. I have not yet mentioned the bread pudding. I know what you're thinking, "Who adores bread pudding?" I don't. Except this one. It is not always on the menu, but when it is it is a special treat. They serve it with warm Caramel sauce that has just a touch of bourbon. All the desserts here are unique and delectable, but this is by far my favorite. All desserts are sharing size (especially if you have already gorged yourself by this point!) you may ask for 2 or 3 or 4 spoons. Okay Maxies. You have New York. You have Milwaukee. Mm...mm... good! I looked on Yelp because I was in the mood for Cajun food. Found this place and boy was I impressed! As a Louisiana native, it's not easy finding decent and authentic Southern cuisine around here. Not only was Maxie's tasty, but it was affordable which is a huge plus in my opinion. I ordered the catfish couvillion (koo-bee-yawn) and it was amazingly on point! I've never seen anyone even offer this dish let alone execute it so well. We stopped in during Happy Hour and stayed for dinner. The food is good, the atmosphere relaxed, but the strength here is outstanding service. Wow, from the hostess to all of the wait staff, they were friendly, helpful, and attentive. My wife had catfish which was very tasty. I had brisket which was good but not special. The same goes for the cornbread. It gets crowded and noisy but the tables are spaced so you don't feel cramped. read more

Got a table pretty quickly on a Friday evening. Cornbread perfect- hint of sweet with crunchy edges. I had the crabcakes- they were fantastic! Moist inside and delicious. Coleslaw fresh and tasty, so much food on the plate! My husband had the baby back ribs- they were good, but not quite great. Need a bit more bite or Tang to them. Took a group here recently for a friends birthday party ( it was his first time) It always amazes me, but all my guests were thrilled as well! Adding a star. Maxie's does what they do well, and they have for a long time now. When it comes to longevity in the restaurant biz, consistency is key, and Maxie's is beyond consistently good. What they (and Blue's Egg) bring to the MKE dining scene is beyond important. Quality, consistency, and niche... but not too niche. I really love me some Maxie's. I guess the reason I can't give this place a full 5 stars is because I'm from the south and I've had some pretty awesome Cajun food in my days. The gumbo and jambalaya at Maxie's just don't compare to some of the mouth-watering spicy down-home deliciousness in which I've had the privilege of partaking. Well HELLO Maxie's! I am ashamed that I haven't been to this bumpin' good time place before, but after journeying to this fine establishment last week I'm sure that this is going to become one of my regular stops during 2013. Maxie's welcomes you with incredibly friendly and personable help, and the warmth of the restaurant doesn't hurt when it's about 13 degrees outside. The décor is a wee bit on the dark side, but there are enough lights to help guide you around the location. We arrived around 8 and were told there was a 45 minute wait, so we went to the upstairs bar and were surrounded by several other people awaiting their table. Luckily for us, we only waited for about 20 minutes and were escorted to our table. The food was DE LI CIOUS. I am typically not the biggest fan of southern food, but this was amazing. I got the shrimp and grits and nearly cleaned the plate. Other members of the party chowed down on the fish fry and the tuna. There wasn't much food leftover once this clan got through. Some perks of the Maxie's - it's not so loud that you can't have a nice chat over dinner, staff is very nice and prompt, wait time is much shorter than anticipated, and the food arrives pretty quickly. The only con of Maxie's is that parking is mostly on the street, so it can be challenging to find a very close parking spot. I'd definitely recommend hitting up this joint. read more

God I wish there was a place like this near me! How I would love to be a regular. Just to be able to stop in after work, sit at the bar and order a Mint Julep and a bowl of Gumbo! It is everything you could want in a neighborhood place. Comfort Food, Good Drinks and a fun, friendly staff. A friend took me here for my birthday dinner last week and we had a great time! I ordered a very good Mint Julep and my friend had a Hurricane. For appetizers we ordered some Peel and Eat Shrimp and Cajun Popcorn Crawfish Tails. The Shrimp was my least favorite item of the night and it was still really good. The Crawfish Tails were lightly breaded, crispy, juicy and came with a nicely spiced dipping sauce. I ordered a cup of Crab and Corn Chowder that was thick and tasty! My Entree was Shrimp and Grits. Just classic! Creamy Grits, tons of perfectly cooked Shrimp and a really good sauce made with Tasso Ham. The portion was so big that I had enough leftover for two lunches! While we were waiting for the check, they brought out a huge piece of Banana Chocolate Coconut Cream Pie. It was basically 3 separate layer of each type of pie. The roasted chicken with potatoes and vegetables is world class. I happened to get lucky and the chicken breast was extra large. I've had the oysters, which are very meaty and delicious. My dad was born/raised in Alabama. When I visit my family down there, it's a matter of mere hours before I pick up the accent. I like to say that I'm half Southern, I use "y'all" often and seriously (despite mocking from the Boyfriend). Then I went to Maxie's, and it said, "Shut up and eat this fancy-ass Southern food." Holy heck, y'all. Every single bite here has been insanely delicious. And I have bitten all of the foods I could get my paws on. I force my dinner mates to share, because every item on the menu is that good. The first time I went, I had some mushroom special (WHAT IS YOUR NAME, MUSHROOM SPECIAL), and months later I am still wishing for it again. The tofu wings are fucking top-notch, even people who are hesitant about tofu have liked these. Gumbo? Eat it. Ribs? Eat 'em. Cocktails? Slurp it up. Pulled pork? You better believe it. Maxie's is magical. Eat all the food. Take leftovers home to savor. Don't let your evil genius of a dog open the refrigerate and eat those leftovers. You will cry a lot. Maxie's is the kind of place that you need to go to with no inhibitions about diet or self-image. I went into this meal with every intention of consuming 2,000 calories....and I probably succeeded. We ordered the fried pickles and fried crawfish tails for some apps. The crawfish tails were absolutely great. They were kind of like fried shrimp, but tasted like crab a little bit. I guess they were a little tough to eat, but I enjoyed every morsel that I struggled for. I ordered the Po' Boy (I was obsessed for awhile) and some greens. Both were great. But I'm not sure that anything can compare to the absolute perfection and deliciousness that were the Shrimp and Grits. Shrimp was cooked perfectly and apparently the sauce was cooking for something like 48 hours--you could tell, it was super rich and flavorful. Southern comfort took me straight to a food coma! To be honest I think I'm hallucinating just a tad as I write this...it's physically impossible to sit up straight. I'll start with the first and foremost-parking! Maxie's has their own parking lot just across the street which is really nice so you don't have to do any street parking (which is important because the faster you can get to the food the better). At about $20 per ginormous plate it's a good idea to go splitsies- especially with the richness and buttery goodness of the dishes- but you'd be lying to yourself if you don't eat yourself into oblivion and demolish it all. Going off of that, if 3 girls walk into Maxie's and order $75 worth of food, how many leftovers do you think there were? If you guessed none you're right on the money. Here's the run down of what we got: Complimentary corn bread (uber crumbly, would've been amazing warmed up though) Gumbo Jambalaya (There was a generous amount of add-ins with the rice, so there was never a boring bite. Top it with their spicy vinegar and hot sauce!) Brisket (Wasn't as tender/juicy as they boasted, also found the BBQ sauce a little sweet for my taste...then again I'm not a BBQ person so I really can't judge) and best of all... Shrimp and grits! (I have been looking forward to this for months and I was NOT disappointed. The cheesy goodness of the smooth and creamy grits drenched in a spicy tomato sauce melded together in a combustion of perfection...excuse my food porn) My only criticism is that the food didn't come out too hot. However, the bathroom is really nice, spacious, and clean. You may find yourself spending some time there with the grandiosity of these dishes. Also the service is fast and the staff is really nice/enthusiastic. It's really hard to find authentic Southern cuisine in the midwest so I don't have anything to compare this to, but I think Maxie's does a fabulous job! My sister said she's had Southern style food with more taste before, but I didn't notice any sort of blandness and I drenched my food in their homemade hot sauce and spicy vinegar. I'm currently incapacitated with all the food in my stomach, but if you were to put another order of shrimp and grits in front of me that baby would be gone in a hot second. read more

All these reviewers are on spot about Maxie's but it is all talk. Can anyone truly teach you the ways of the Maxie? Sorry, I really dumbed it down in this review, but that is fine because the menu is stock full of delicious items. Deep fried pickles to Pecan Encrusted Trout Filets. It is not just the entrees that make weak knees but the fixin's as well. The "chicken-fried" chicken has a pretty tasty brussel sprout and veggie side. I do not have a black belt in six-sigma and I do not have one in the ways of the Maxie...but I do know this: 1. Wear your elastic pants, but, keep it classy. 2. My girlfriend calls me the human pit. I seem to eat and eat. On this night though, we shared a shrimp n grits as an appetizer. After eating it, I was worried that I might not be able to enjoy much of my main meal. The shrimp n grits are dense and took years off my life (in a good way). Be modest with your orders unless you are looking for lots of leftovers. 3. Gloria is a kick ass waitress. She is passionate about the food and she is passionate about you being passionate about the food. Which is really easy. Both floors are comforting and vibrant. The mood is food first, diet later. Plus, there is a full bar on both levels. 4. There are so many more things that need to be eaten, by me. On top of that, there are always some specials. 5. Speaking of specials, Maxie's could be your weekday happy hour hero. As they say, "I will have another beer, after this one..." . 6.. On Sundays, 12 and unders eat for a $1. Went here a while back because of the great reviews. Approaching the two hour mark of waiting for our seats, I decided to see if there was an issue. They couldn't give me an answer as to what hour we would finally be seated. Eventually left. Spent a bunch of money on drinks waiting to be seated. It took me a long time, but I finally got here and it didn't disappoint one bit. The evening started with drinks, celebrating my Sixth Annual 29th Birthday. I started with what they call "Rye Rye Cherry Pie", which was Rye whiskey and something cherry which went down so damn quick I immediately followed it up with Bourbon Sours made with their amazing homemade Sour. If you like good tasting drinks, make sure you have a designated driver as you stumble on out of here. They started us off with cornbread, and it was perfectly moist and delicious. It was Rack n' Mac Thursday, so my wife and I decided to go with the specials. I went with the half rack of St. Louis Ribs with all the fixin's. As they brought the food out to me, I'll be damned if I didn't take one bite of the Corn and Arugula salad, and then another, and then another. Let me explain to you salad in my life. I don't mind it, I mostly eat it every day at lunch for health benefits. I put a little dressing on it and stuff it in my mouth as quick as possible just to get it over with. It's the most boring part of my day. Yet I completely ignored a plate of ribs for this amazing salad. The days after this trip had me completely consumed with trying to replicate this salad. And that's not to say that the ribs weren't good. They were perfectly blackened on the ends, tender on the inside and the sauce had a great kick to it, just hot enough to feel it, but not too hot to enjoy. The rough cut fries were great and the beans were absolutely incredible. How come more people don't mix pulled pork into their BBQ beans? My wife had the Cheesy Beef n' Greens Mac, to which I had grabbed more than a few bites. The beef was good, and their wasn't so much that it was overpowering. The cheese and noodles were awesome, it could have used a healthier dose of greens, but it was damn good nonetheless. The only problem we seemed to have with the dinner is that our table was parked so close to the bar. My big ass was pushed in as far as I could go, yet when a business type dude walked past to get to his barstool, he damn near put me face first into my plate of ribs without apology. Maybe if I was rocking Allen Edmonds and garb from Men's Wearhouse he'd treat me a little better, but beware of rude Yuppies. Our server Aaron was beyond helpful, we came in with many questions and he was very kind and patient with us, even though they were incredibly busy at the time. Speaking of our server, my wife said "it's his berfday!!!!" And our server was kind enough to treat me to a free dessert, to which I gratefully accepted. I had the Mud Pie, and our server brought it out with a candle in it and free of any goofy singing. Absolutely delicious, such chocolatey goodness was the perfect end to a perfect meal. Ate here with a group of friends last Friday and was extremely impressed. I had always heard good things about Maxie's, but I wasn't sure if this was the type of Southern restaurant that served food made with care or if it was just taking its hints from a Country Kitchen menu. In the case of Maxie's it is the former, I can assure you....er...y'all. It was a Friday night, so it was busier than a cat trying to cover up a turd on a marble floor. People were everywhere and it was standing room only. Thankfully, they have a good system where you get a number card so you don't have to stand around hoping to hear your name. They'll find you and let you know your table is ready. We grabbed some drinks from the bar and waited outside. Once ready, we were seated upstairs which is roomier than the first floor. Everything on the menu looked so good that it was difficult to choose. I eventually settled on the chicken fried chicken. I also opted for a supper club salad. Since I was also interested in the side dishes, my wife ordered three along with a salad so we could share everything. I knew the portions were large, but wasn't expecting them to be as big as they were. The side order of fries was gigantic. By the time we received our entrees I was already full, but I kept on shoveling food into my gullet. The food is so tasty it will make you wanna slap your momma, and then slap your momma's momma. The chicken was lightly breaded and fried and sitting on a bed of mashed potatoes, the likes of which I've never tasted before. The tasso gravy that accompanied the dish had some kick to it and was so good I wanted to kidnap the chef, take him home and force him to make gallons of it for me to bathe in. The mac and cheese was delish, but it does have bacon in it, so keep that in mind if you're a vegetarian. The maple braised collard greens just melted in your mouth and the fried green tomatoes were every bit as tasty as you imagine them to be. Others in the group got the brisket, which was also superb. Everyone in the group had a great time and I cannot wait to go back and try some of their other offerings. Ok first word of advice, Friday night at 7 is not a good time to try this place for the first time. Our wait was over an hour an a half. I'm pretty sure I was soo hungry that an old shoe would taste good. The ambiance was nice and the food was smelling right. We were finally seated upstairs. I enjoyed the ultra sweet cornbread/birthday cake hybrid. Sounds funny but tastes awesome. I ordered the pulled pork. When I say it was spicy it was SPICY, meaning when I was a little kid my mom made foods so hot and spicy she had to wear gloves preparing them because the peppers would burn her hands spicy, and yes I ate that food. Back to the pulled pork, after about three bites, HOLY mother of Lucifer this stuff was spicy. I felt like a wimp and kept eating all the time worrying that my insides were slowly being melted and a hole would eventually burn through my stomach. Then, I overheard the table next to me (that was seated with several manly men) complaining to the waiter that the food was not edible because it was way too spicy! Redemption! Even with the extreme spiciness, the food was delicious. I think the cook may have just went a little overboard, or the peppers were a little extra spicy that day. I really wondered how the food would tasted if it was toned down a notch. The absolutely best part of the meal was dessert, the cherry pie. It was sublime! The cherries seemed so fresh, totally different from that goopy stuff that is normally in cherry pie. I would go here just for that pie! Easy to get to - right off of I-94, parking lot is small but there was plenty of street parking. My wife and I went on a Friday night and got seated right away with a window seat! Of course I had to try the "Damn Good" fish fry and my wife had the pulled pork sandwich. They bring you corn bread prior to your meal - AWESOME. Fish fry was as good as promised. Lightly breaded and generous portions that it didn't need to be an AYCE. Fries were fresh cut and the cole slaw was good (even if it wasn't the creamy kind). My wife enjoyed the pulled pork sandwich. The wait service was average. If it was good I would remember the waitress' name and tell you to ask for her... Overall if you are living in Milwaukee you have to go hear at least once. Simply one of my favorite restaurants in Milwaukee. I love that i live a mile away and on a freezing cold snowy winter night i can call in a takeout order of jambalaya. Think about it...it almost makes it all better. I've had just about everything on the menu, and i've done so with great pleasure. The jambalaya is outstanding, the ribs are unreal, and both the pulled pork sammich and platter are great. The pecan crusted trout is wonderful. My standard is usually the creole catfish, which I adore. I love a place where it looks like the staff enjoys being there just as much as the patrons. I am always impressed with the service. The wait sucks. I actually try and avoid it during the weekends. Call ahead to get your name on the waiting list, and you'll only have to wait an hour or so to get a table. The bar area is cramped, but you'll find your way there to toss a few back. Perhaps this is why everyone loves Maxies! they are always three sheets to the wind before they even sit down at a table to eat! I'm getting sick of seeing those stickers all over the city on stop signs and light poles. But i have to admit, whence i see one i think "mmmm, jambalaya." Oh, my gosh i almost forgot. The side salad that you get with many of the entrees (I know for sure the ribs) is unreal. I've actually order that and the mac n cheese for dinner. HELLO SHRIMP & GRITS! This place is amazing. Great service, perfect southern food and friendly atmosphere. My man I and I did a date night here Saturday night after spending the day at the Milwaukee Public Museum. We fell in love from the moment we walked in. Love the whole queen fish theme. Love the fact that the entire staff was friendly and provided above the top customer service. Our water and drink glass never got too low because of constant attention. We started with the free cornbread, ordered a crawfish appetizer (which comes with a zesty sauce), brewed iced tea (no sweetner) and a $1 off bourbon bev during happy hour! My entree was shrimp and grits and it was perfect. So impressed with the quality. My man ordered the blackened catfish sandwich. Catfish was nice and most but sandwich fell apart so was a bit messy to eat. It came with cajun waffle fries and cajun mayo. Heaven in our mouths! We spent around $65ish with tax & tip, but got cornbread, 2 alcoholic drinks, 4 iced teas, an appetizer + two entrees. Overall, we can't wait to go back. PARKING Word for the wise: They have two parking lots -- One for general customers located on the N side of the street and one adjacent to their property for to-gos & handicapped folks only. Service: excellent, friendly, helpful, patient and funny Drinks: I love drink specials. Decent list and yummy minty mojitos Food: Best oysters in town. They serve them with freshly grated horseradish (yum) cocktail sauce, and a peppery mignonette that is AMAZING! Unlimited corn bread and honey butter that is so good you think mama cooked it. The popcorn fried crawfish appetizer was very good not over fried or over seasoned. I have never had friend green tomatoes so I can't compare but they were tasty. I had the jambalaya and I wasn't crazy about it but I think I'm just not a jambalaya girl. The shrimp and grits were AMAZING though. BEWARE: the andouille sausage is hot hot hot. The food here was delicious. My wife and I tried the barbecue shrimp for an appetizer it was delicious. The cornbread was excellent we asked for a second serving. I had the shrimp and grits it was wonderful a little spice and very flavorful. My wife had blacked catfish with red beans and rice and their maple greens she really enjoyed it. read more

I have been going to Maxie's since it opened in 2007. In the restaurant business where it is really difficult to be consistently good, they are consistently good. Consistently VERY good. I've sat at the bar for cocktails and oysters, cocktails and gumbo, cocktails and dinner, and just for cocktails. They make good cocktails. I've been upstairs for parties and downstairs for dinner. Always good. The atmosphere is warm and cozy in the winter and cool and comfy in the summer. I love the dark red walls and the lighting. There is something exciting about the way a well-run restaurant sounds and Maxie's has it. It's hard to explain, but you know what I mean, right? My favorites include the cornbread, the macaroni and cheese, the jambalaya, the gumbo, the BBQ, the Pecan Crusted Trout, the Shrimp & Grits, the...basically, I like everything. And you can never go wrong with whatever the special is. Leave room for dessert. Whatever it is, it doesn't suck. Great beer selection. Good wine list. Great libations, including a Pimm's Cup. Nice drink specials. The only drawback we ever have is this place is always so dang busy. Come early, come late, come for dinner on Sunday...there are always ways to find a seat. read more

Passed by Maxie's and decided to head in for dinner. Can't go wrong with Southern food! Overall, the service was very nice however the food was just mediocre to me. Some great, some not so great. Their cornbread was nothing out of the ordinary. Typical cornbread you eat. It would have been nice to have them warm. Shrimp and Grits: This was the best dish they had there. The portions were a decent size and the tomato-like sauce on top of the shrimps and grits were flavorful. They served a lot of grits which was very filling. Perfect if you love grits! The soups came out luke-warm which was not appetizing, but the waitress was kind enough to bring it back to heat up. The restaurant heats up the food on the stove and not a microwave thankfully. Crab and Corn Chowder: This was just an okay soup. The soup had a awkward taste to it that I couldn't pinpoint. It might have been maybe crab that was a little old? I am not sure but there was a peculiar taste. Gumbo: This was good. It was a thicker consistency because of the okra which is good since most places have their gumbo runnier.
