Our family had a Pacific Northwest trip and we made it a priority to check out different small mom-and-pop bakeries. Maxim's is no-frills and old school. We arrived around 1 pm and there was a wide selection. Love the fresh signature.mango cake! Was so good we went back and bought another one for our friends dinner. Will next time try the chestnut cake. My grandma loved the Chinese Rice Puff "rice crispy" from Maxims. Over the years, it's now wrapped individually. Maxim and Boss in Chinatown were the OG bakeries with HK Style Cafe connected. Another must buy is their mooncakes as they are locally one of the best traditionally made mooncakes. Cash Only for bakery, I don't recall for the cafe upstairs. read more

I went during the LNY parade and it was one of the less busy bakeries. There's no place to sit down so it's more of a grab-and-go. It's small but doesn't feel stuffy. Everything I ate was very good and all the food was warm when I received it. I added the egg tarts to my order at the last second and the staff at the till offered for 50 cents to add 2 more packs of egg tarts. I politely declined because I was very full but I thought it was very sweet. I recommended the pineapple bun to my friend who was with me and he absolutely loved it. It was his first time and he usually doesn't like trying new things. He also grabbed a danish and said it was decent. Price-wise it's the littlest bit more expensive than bakeries in the area but it's such a small difference it hardly matters. I would come back! read more

My favorite is their chestnut roll cake and Lo Bak Goh. The chestnut filling is very generous and not overly sweet. If you want a full roll it needs to be ordered in advance but they do sell slices Same with the Lo Bak Goh. Not overly sweet like most bakeries and they usually sell out fast. The mini apple pie is also very good. My friend bought a mango cake near closing and it was very fresh and delicious. I love their attentiveness and excellent customer service. I remember coming to this place a few years ago and enjoying their breakfast. I went by today and although everyone was very courteous and the food was (just) okay, when I went to pay with US dollars they charged me more than what the food was worth. Bill was $20.21 CAN which is about $15 US. I ended up paying $25 US because according to them the restaurant has an up charge policy for making the currency change. I didn't see any signs regarding this. Also, they said that this did not include tip. Will I be going back? No. Do I recommend this place? No, unless they start taking card or if you have CAN dollars. In general, my advice to any foreigners is to not go in any place where they only take cash. What a rip off. read more

Their Black Forest Cake is actually a chocolate cake with chocolate cream layers and cherries (same as the T&T Mixed Fruit cake with chocolate cake and chocolate cream layers but Maxim's uses cherries instead of mixed fruits). The price reflected the quality - no liquor in the cake (Kirsch); the texture of the cake and the cream were so light that the chocolate flavour was diluted. The strawberries on the top of the cake tasted nearly rotten, and it was unnecessary to use icing sugar and miniature chocolate balls on the top of the fruits. The white cream balls on the edge tasted fake; it tasted like flour and not milky. Also, the cream balls were dimpled and this was unusual. Needless to say, there were no cherries on top of the cake like the authentic Black Forest Cake (they put mixed fruits on the top of the cake) because this was not a genuine Black Forest Cake. Their Napoleon cake was merely a block of puff pastry layers with minimal cream layers inside. We were surprised to hear the male cashier told us that they were cash only because Maxim's is a big company. The fact that the male cashier told us that we could get the items (that were on the counter) ourselves, and they just left our cake on their working counter for us to get the cake instead of handing the cake to us indicate they had no service. We recognized this man who had worked there since the early 90s. The female server retrieved the items for us and he told her that we were to get them ourselves. This was the first time that we encountered this attitude from a bakery (usually the staff would get the items for customers even if the items were packaged and put on the counter, and the staff would hand the box of products to customers). We would not return due to the quality of products and lack of service. read more

It's wonderful that they are still making fresh cakes during this time. The mango cake here is so good. I love the fact that they add fresh mangos to the cake, the cake itself is so pretty, and the taste is a mixture between vanilla and mango tasting. read more

I like the buns and moon cake here. They have the mini buns so you get to try assorted. As well, the service is not bad. I mean not super exceptional. Standard buy 6 no tax. The place can be quite busy. But they do make everything fresh daily. Yes couple times a day. So, you don't have to come super early to get what you want. My favorite is their curry bun. Their chicken bun and sausage bun is not bad. The sausage bun is my sister favorite but I prefer bun with some kind of sauce. The curry beef bun is not too spicy and it does have quite a bit of meat. I usually get the mini ones. Not the one big full size one. I do enjoy coming here. read more

Good selection and reasonable prices. I was able to pre-order a big order for a wedding function and pick it up one the day that I needed it. Parking can be difficult at the Chinatown location but a little better at the Victoria Drive one. Very clean location next to London Drug on Victoria Dr. They will wrap each item individually or box it up in larger boxes. Sometimes they get busy so there is a short wait. read more

This place has been here s for at least 30+ years. It was once nestled among Chinese grocers, medicinal shops and shops. Now it shares the neighbourhood with hipster restaurants and vegans stores. It's your typical HK style cafe with all the items you'd expect from one. Prices are better than elsewhere and some clientele can be sketchy but it's expected due to the area. Recommended for a trip down memory lane for those so remember old Vancouver and old Chinatown. read more

This is a classic and I would come here with my grandparents and parents when younger to buy custard tarts and pork buns. I have fond memories of the mooncakes here. This place still makes them as good as I remember. And I usually pick up fruit cakes here for special occasions like birthdays. If you haven't tried one of their birthday cakes you must! You'll get hooked. Street parking is plentiful if you have to drive and there is a passenger parking zone almost in front of this store if you are just popping in to buy something and dashing back out with a friend in the car. This is the Chinatown Vancouver branch of this Chinese bakery chain. Like all of the bakeries in Chinatown, this place is cheap. I find the offerings here resemble the ones at The Boss Bakery down the street with similiar pricing to boot. I always seem to make a stop here whenever I am in Chinatown. On this occasion, I wanted to try something not of the typical Chinese buns variety. Decided to give the banana mochi and mooncake with lotus and coconut a try. The banana mochi is a good deal. I think it was $1, it may have been a little less. Mochi is cut into three pieces. It definitely tasted like banana, but I found it to be too grainy. I much prefer the green tea mochi nearby at Sun Fresh which is what I am more used to. However, the mooncake was a surprise. Since it was after the Moon Festival, they were selling all mooncakes for 50 percent off. They have the typical varieties, but the lotus and coconut version caught my eye because I have not seen that mix before. It turned out to be pretty good. The coconut is a different flavor variety. It is a bit sweeter. A pretty good deal at a little over $3 for one after the discount. All in all, I have not come across a bad Chinese bakery in Vancouver and Maxim's continues that streak. It's a very authentic HK style restaurant I can find in the old China town. As a Hong Konger, I find the food delicious and the price is reasonable. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. You can change whatever food on the menu so you can always get the best value of your order. It closes on Wednesdays. read more

We found this place by chance on our weekend trip to Vancouver over Christmas. The two places we really wanted to try in Chinatown were closed for Christmas Eve (unheard of here in Texas). First, this place is cash only. Thankfully, there is an ATM machine at the bank right across the street. The restaurant is small and on the 2nd floor. The bakery is even smaller and is on the first floor. We arrived for lunch on 12/24. I got a meal of flat noodles, congee and milk tea all for about $10. My bf got another flat noodle dish that had chicken and gravy and was even better with a smoked flavor. I wish we could have returned to try more items; next time we're in town! read more

I would always go for the bbq buns and also the other savoury buns available. Now that I am a bit older, I still come here whenever I get a chance to visit Chinatown. Bought about $40 plus of their product this trip. A little disappointed on their regular individual wrapped chicken egg cake which was dry. Probably not a popular item from older inventory and not fresh enough. Also the thousand year eggs in the pi dan so has so little in it perhaps less than a quarter of one egg. In fact, my friend did a special order of a dozen Pi Dan So ($2.40?) from Anna's cake House on Broadway. I bought also some from Kam Do in Richmond. By comparison, Anna's are the best of all but you pay for the quality at twice as much as Maxime which gives you only tiny bit of egg inside and more other filling. Kam do comes second in taste which is also cheaper but maintains consistent of quality. Conclusion is that each bakery store has their own specialties. One needs to know where to get the best of their selections. And depends on how much you have in your own pocket and expect to spend for them. It is always right of the saying: you get what you pay for. read more

Amongst the bevy of Chinatown bakeries, I oft favour New Town. Something about their pineapple coconut buns stops me from going elsewhere. This being said, New Town doesn't make cakes. Enter Maxim's. They're not the best cakes in town but they're reasonably fresh and consistently nice. Their whipped cream icing is never too sweet but frothy enough to guarantee some finger-licking fun (haha). Regardless of season, each cake is sure to come decorated with the standard melon balls, which seem almost compulsory at this shop, and kiwi fruit. Can't wait til summer when they start making mango cakes again! Until then, the chestnut flavoured sponge will keep me mildly satisfied. read more

Can't believe i almost forgot about this place, as the other ones on Main st. seem to be easier to get to. Now it's still hard to get a spot sometimes simply they don't offer much seating unless you're Goldstone. Easy to forget they have a seating section if one only goes to the bakery downstairs so that's the cool part. While i waited, i browsed the display case and told them what I wanted once i got seating. The coconut cream half-loaf is my favourite here. Ordered the flat noodles w/ beef and sprouts, flavourful with enough onions. Comes w/ the cold half tea/coffee drink, one of the best in terms of coffee flavour. This place has been around forever. Been coming here since the early 90s. The restaurant is located on the 2nd floor on top of maxim bakery. My fav order: breakfast A + B. u can basically change the egg dish to anything. I typically go with the chicken omelette and a ham macaroni in soup. Comes with drink and a bakery bun which can also be changed to whatever u like. All for $6something. This place is worth a try! read more

I'm not sure if my trip even deserves 2 stars to start off but the Maxim name in my mind means quality - left, right and centre... it's one of my most popular bakeries around the world! ... so I was already disgusted by the non-curried, curried meatballs that I bought from the Chinatown festival so I wanted to discover Maxim's to enjoy some buttery filling chinese Bun. unfortunately... the buns looked small, stale, and old. The bread was not soft and moist... and I was just not impressed. .. sigh. just so hard to find consistency sometimes. I saw the stairs to go upstairs.. I always do love coming here. This place always brings me back to my younger years, back where my dad would take me from time to time. I was always order the same thing, spaghetti tomato sauce with ham (what kid doesn't like spaghetti?!). I still love getting that dish today and it taste just like how I remember it to be. The restaurant is smaller and it is up a flight of stairs (yes, you get a workout before a meal). Downstairs is the bakery that I still have yet to try! lol Keep in mind, this is a Chinese restaurant so you might see some things that are a little disturbing such as the booths...... Lets just say the place looks exactly the same 20 years ago, but just a little dirtier now. I guess you can't expect much when the food is so cheap, in large quantities, and good. Yes, the old classic of Maxim's in the Chinatown location. They have a nice selection of Chinese pastries which are always fresh and tasty. Nothing will blow your socks off, but they are reliably consistent when you need a fix and are in the area. read more

Every time I'm in Vancouver, I must stop by this bakery to pick up Coconut buns (gai mee bao.) Maxim's are the best.... with the most coconut filling of any other. (Even some of the best NY Chinatown and Flushing NY bakeries can't compete with Maxim's coconut buns!) Last year, I happened to be in town during the Chinese New Year celebration and bought some Moon Cakes. To my surprise, these were not your typical - dry, bland and sandy - moon cakes. The box was lovely and the cakes were moist and absolutely delicious! I took several back with me, as gifts.... and the recipients were very happy. read more
