Okay so this could very well be my favorite lunch spot in the Austin area. I love everything about it. I grew up in NOLA and when I eat here I feel like I am at my favorite back home. This time I ordered the Burger which was awesome. I asked if instead of the bun I could get it on the NOLA French bread. It was better than I had hoped. The fries are always perfect and hot and fresh. The service is always great here and today was no exception. Not sure of her name but she handles the room with perfection. A friend who grew up in New Orleans suggested we make the drive to Manor for lunch at Maxine's. It was definitely a good lunch, worth the 25 minute drive from Round Rock on a recent Thursday. The restaurant parking lot was nearly empty when we arrived, as was the self-seating dining room. There was one person serving everything, which worked out fine given the place was fairly empty. There were several lunch specials on the menu, and we chose the gumbo and po boy combo. The gumbo was excellent, with just a hint of heat. My friend had fried oysters in her sandwich while I had shrimp. The seafood was freshly breaded with well-seasoned cornmeal and there was no skimping. This was a bargain at $10.99 in my opinion. The dining room is spare, with metal chairs. The walls are decorated with interesting artwork, and there were 2 TVs going when we were there. The menu has plenty of great options that are worth further exploration. I could easily make a meal from a bowl of seafood gumbo or a seafood platter spotted on a nearby table as we left. Prices seem very reasonable. This is a hidden gem as casual restaurants go, and I will be back to try more! read more

Surprising find! We were headed to the place next door and saw Maxine's open and thought we'd give it a try. We ordered 4 items and they were 3 for 4. The server was super sweet and attentive. The Cajun egg rolls were AMAZING!! They tasted freshly made and I know I'm gonna crave them! The seafood gumbo was the unfortunate disappointment. It was so bland and had a sweet taste of something I couldn't quite pinpoint (maybe cinnamon or nutmeg??) that was off-putting. The color was watery gray, not the deep chocolatey color I'm used to. Even the salt and hot sauce didn't help. The stuffed redfish was very good but not stuffed. Lol. The "stuffing" was part of the cream sauce. The fish was a little overcooked but the whole flavor with the (sub) dirty rice was delicious and the leftovers will be tomorrow's lunch. The Catfish Pontchartrain w/ dirty rice was delicious as well. My partner got the fish grillled instead of fried and he loved it. In summary, I will definitely go back when I'm driving through the area. I'd love to go for their brunch on a Saturday or Sunday (9a-12p) and see how that is. The boudin is fantastic! The chicken & sausage gumbo is really good too (just doesn't seem like it has enough chicken imo. Perhaps, though, the pieces are just so small that they're pretty easy to miss - I'm used to bone-in chicken in my gumbo or, at a minimum, big chunks of chicken. Either way, the flavor was, like the service, great! The place itself echos so a table of eight conversing and laughing is reminiscent of a loud cafeteria (a little obnoxious). DO NOT believe the 5 star reviews. If I could I would give this place -5 stars. To start it a Saturday afternoon we walk in only two tables with two people each, so we make the third table with two of us so six people total. The waitress needs training you don't abandon the table once you bring food and drinks. Start we ordered sweet tea. The tea was no good watered down. So we asked for coke instead, she came back no coke so Dr Pepper instead ok. The bad was she charged us for both drinks. Next was the frog legs fried. I didn't eat them but my roommate did and he said they were not good. Fried gator was the best thing we ordered and it was ok, could have been fried a little longer. Razzoos is better. Seafood gumbo was soup. The seafood is not fresh it was off. Both of us tried it. DO NOT order this. Sausage and chicken gumbo was also soup but better than the seafood gumbo. Hardly no meat just broth. Seafood platter was bad. Way way too much breading. The fried shrimp were ok. The oysters were bad, again too much breading and they were off. The fish tasted ok but like someone else said in the comments it was slimy. Almost forgot about the French fries those were mediocre at best to soggy. So for two appetizers, two entrees, and 4 drinks over $70.00 Both of us got food poisoning from eating here my roommate is in the bathroom vomiting while I write this. After reading a lot of the reviews on here, the one and two star reviews are true. All the five star reviews are a bunch of liars or their bots. I know it's a chain restaurant but if you want better Cajun food drive to round rock and go to Razzoos. It's 10,000 times better than this fucking place. This place needs a visit from the health inspector and they need to be shut down. I agree with what another commenter said I don't know how this place is still in business. Visited for the first time and found this restaurant by doing a google search while in the area. I started off with appetizers Cajun egg rolls and boudin balls. Having a creole background myself, I was very excited to try this food! The appetizers were tasty however with the boudin balls I would suggest to have a more seasoned rice before frying. (The food may be cooked from passed down recipes) so I totally understand maybe not wanting to change things up. The Cajun egg rolls were good but I just wasn't getting that Cajun flavor I was hoping for. The chicken fried gator was ok again just missing the flavors I'm used to. The sweet tea is amazing! Found myself hungry in the city of Manor. Found this little jewel of a restaurant and upon my arrival found the parking lot was fairly full. Now there's another restaurant right next store so I can't say who all the cars belong too. Inside there was quite a crowd for a Sunday afternoon. The menu has quite a variety of items to choose from. I found myself craving catfish. Now you can't come to a place called "The Gumbo House", and not sample the gumbo. So I tried a cup of the Chicken & Sausage gumbo with Catfish Po-Boy. I'll start with the Gumbo. I'm not a big fan of Gumbo, it always seems to upset my tummy for some reason. But this gumbo was exceptional. Nice chunks of chicken and andouille sausage, served with white rice in a dark rue. Right away I could tell, this was somebodies "Me-Ma's" recipe. The flavor was amazing. This is what gumbo is supposed to taste like. The Catfish Po-Boy was amazing. Nice soft bread, big hot chunks of catfish, lettuce, tomatoes and a nice white sauce that gave an unbelievable flavor. My first bite was truly heaven. This may become one of my favorite band outs. The restaurant is clean, nice ambiance with Cajun music in the background. Big Hugs to Maxine. This place is a hit. Now if anyone has read my reviews, you know I like value (ok, I'm cheap). 5 star service and food. The food was absolutely delicious and scratch-made. There were 8 of us and every single person thoroughly enjoyed their food. I'd say the stand outs would be the stuffed Redfish and the Catfish with the Cubion corn sauce on top. The baskets were brimming with fish and fries and their gumbo had a deep, dark roux that I'm sure was divine (I didn't get a taste) For dessert don't miss their chocolate pecan pie or their bread pudding. The place was cool. My wife and I drove about 35mins to try the food. And it was pretty good. I got the Nola Trio because I couldn't decide on the 3 taste testers I wanted try which are my favorite dishes. My wife had the Bayou Pasta. This place is amazing.I am from the boot and cook all my Cajun cuisine from scratch. My kids and I have decided that when I don't feel like cooking, we can go there and get all the boudin balls, crawfish etouffe, poboys, and jambalaya that we want. I tried the chicken and sausage gumbo once but it tasted like it didn't have a roux. Maybe that was a one off but I will update my review after trying the seafood gumbo. We went exploring in the Elgin/Manor area and have passed this restaurant a few times. It's a small place but spacious on the inside decorated with New Orleans-based items. They had the Texas Tech and OU game playing and we had the restaurant to ourselves. I had to order the Seafood Gumbo just based on the restaurant's name and my date had the Maque Choux and a Shrimp Po Boy. Maque Choux is something I haven't had before but it was an enjoyable side. I was really excited seeing their menu because they had a lot of Louisiana-inspired food. I will be going back to try. Speaking on the gumbo. The roux wasn't too thick and was a lighter brown in color. The flavor was good but there wasn't any spice. I like okra but felt like there could have been less and more crab. read more

The crawfish were pretty reasonably priced and had a decent level of spice. The shrimp creole was unremarkable. Cake was dry but the frosting was sooo good. I kinda lost my love for this place. The atmosphere and ACOUSTICS in here are terrible. I got the dirty rice and it was cold, and I think I sent it back. The shrimp is definitely good and I'll go again someday probably, but it's not cheap and you can't hear yourself think if people are talking. Put up some acoustic material to make this place more bearable. Servers are always very nice and make it worthwhile. read more

My daughter & I dropped in to Maxine's Gumbo House for the first time this evening. We went for an early dinner, so we had this cute little place nearly to ourselves. That was nice, since we'd had a stressful day. Service was friendly, accommodating, & quick... without being the least bit pushy. The food we got was delicious!! I ordered what's apparently the specialty, the Stuffed Redfish. OH MY! It was AMAZING! Seriously, you must try this perfectly cooked thick filet that's a salty, super savory, creamy delight. I was very happy I upgraded to the dirty rice as it, too, was great! I got a little more than 1/2 way through this huge plate of food before I had to stop, or burst. lol (*Bonus lunch for tomorrow!) My daughter ordered the Chicken Fried Alligator with milk gravy & Maque Choux as the side. The Alligator tail was thick, mild, and fried to perfection! Daughter swooned over the gravy. For us the Maque Choux could've had a bit more seasoning, but there's hot sauce at the table if you're so inclined. I have a spice intolerant son, so he was skeptical & didn't join us for dinner. Boy did he miss out! The food is seasoned well, but in no way "hot"! We also tried the Cajun Eggrolls, & fresh cut French Fries. So good! Crispy fries and creamy, cheesy, crisp eggrolls. Really...everything was on point, except the lemonade... which the waitress happily changed out with a fountain drink, no problem at all. They clearly know how to cook here, & it's apparent they use quality ingredients. They also hire quality waitpersons who go with the flow, staying friendly & composed through the little hiccups that sometimes happen when dealing with shy or anxious folks. Thank you for that. I'm incredibly sad that we haven't been coming here since they opened. Small businesses need community support... especially here in Manor, so they will stay & thrive. We will absolutely have Maxine's on regular rotation from this point on! My daughter & I visited on a weekday around 4pm. We were the only people their (we chose that time to avoid the after--work crowd). My daughter had sweet tea (good) and I had a glass of white wine (good). The liquor options are limited but I'm happy they still offer alcohol. For appetizers we had fried oysters & gator (both were ok). For entrees she ordered the chicken & sausage gumbo but my daughter returned it because we didn't like the taste (oily & bland), the waitress was SUPER nice & told my daughter to order something else. Being a Louisiana boy I don't go into places outside of Louisiana cooking Louisiana cuisine with big expectations. I love Redfish and seeing they had Redfish on the menu I had to give it a try. I have to say the Stuffed Redfish made this Southern Louisiana boy happy. I will say I am glad I asked about having it blackened that was a great decision. That should be the standard way of cooking it as the blackening season was perfect and the fish was cooked perfectly. Very nice portion which I was surprised about for the price. It's great to see a strong, solid Cajun restaurant taking over the space that has housed several forgettable Mexican joints over the years. The menu is extensive and the prices are good, with attractive lunch specials. I had a very good muffuletta--and just like in NOLA, couldn't finish half in one sitting. Others at my table had very good Po'boys, frog legs, and gumbo--although the consensus was that the gumbo was a little bland. The service was quick and friendly. The AC definitely works, a fact that I'll appreciate in August although it was a bit much for a cool spring day. It's very loud. While in Manor for work, my manager and I noticed Maxine's right off 290. We were discussing where to eat and both mentioned this place. Gumbo in Manor? Hell yes! Don't miss it. We split boudin balls for an appetizer. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by these. I don't typically like boudin but these were freaking awesome! When you go, make sure to get some as an appetizer. For my lunch entree, I got red beans and rice. It comes with sausage and a little corn bread. For Cajun, I wanted it to be a little spicier. I like spice though. The flavor was delectable and the sausage was perfect with it. Portion size was great for lunch. I ate it all. I'm excited to go back and try other tasty treats like fish or gator, and I'll be sure to eat those amazing boudin balls. read more
